I'm actually quite happy the text was a short word. I was hit by a texting driver and the driver tried to justify his actions by telling me he was only checking the time on his phone.

But people don't realize that second it takes to unlock your phone and comprehend the words/numbers on the screen can cause you to make one tiny mistake that spirals. (In this case, he went through a red light, and hit me as I was crossing the street- thankfully I hurt him more than he hurt me because my wheelchair fucked up his front axle.)

If reading the word "Yeah" causes you to flip your car, you probably shouldn't have been driving in the first place. If a 4 letter word was really the culprit, she would have never made it past her first stop sign. I highly doubt the text was what cost her her life. AT&T scare tactics if you ask me.

I don't think the act of reading "yeah" was such a big mental jump for her that she flipped her car while processing it.

It was probably the act of driving at a high speed somewhere, being distracted while picking up her phone to read that text thus leading to the event of her having the accident. Accidents with cars happen in seconds and even a momentary distraction can lead to one, it doesn't take much to flip certain cars.

Yeah it's a scare tactic, the same way car accident commercials for seat belts are scare tactics, or those freaky commercials they had for workplace safety.

It's implied because they way they wrote it. You cannot assume that she read it at the time of the accident, how could you? I could tuen on my phone, put it down and 30 seconds later it turns off. There is literally no way to tell unless you are in the car with her and survive.

I said the exact same thing when I saw that commercial. It's like if that's what made her flip her car, then it was only a matter of time before it happened anyway. Alternatively, maybe she asked her sister a real in depth question that warranted a real response, and her sister only responded with "Yeah". Then she decided, this'll show that bitch and flipped her car on purpose to make a point.

Because billboards are out of your windows? Meaning that you're still looking outside? The reason reading your phone while driving is so dangerous and illegal in many parts of the world is that most people do it in their lap. While looking at the phone you're not normally looking at the road, at all. Billboards are designed to be read far enough away that you still have a significant portion of the road in your field of view.

No. There was actually a case in New Jersey back in 2009 that rules that a person who texts a drive is not responsible for the outcome. The driver is the one who is responsible because he had the choice not to check their phone and this be distracted.

...on a case involving a New Jersey woman who sent a text message to her boyfriend knowing full well he was behind the wheel at the time. Now the girlfriend in question, Shannon Colonna, could be added to a 2009 lawsuit stemming from boyfriend Kyle Best's collision with two motorcycle riders, which he admitted to being caused by the distracting text.

The judge in this case has issued a ruling that Colonna cannot be sued for texting her boyfriend, stating that he finds it "unreasonable to impose a duty upon the defendant in this case under these facts." He added that were he to allow the lawsuit against Colonna, "any form of distraction [such as GPS devices and billboards, the judge noted] could potentially serve as basis of a liability case."
