well, he also has the good sense to wear cool university attire

[–]minininja 7 points8 points ago

When I saw him speak he wore this

[–]dunchen22 0 points1 point ago

USC and the Patriots? This dude is just a bandwagoner!

(I kid)

[–]xsidekick409 31 points32 points ago

While the man does have a sense of humor, I think saying he's the only religious leader with one is probably inaccurate.

[–]nilss0n[S] 7 points8 points ago

This is true. Amended statement: His Holiness is the only religious leader with a sense of humor that I personally can appreciate. I'm not even a buddhist.

[–]dunchen22 26 points27 points ago

Why not just say, "Seems like the Dalai Lama has a great sense of humor"? Why separate the religions and compare their leaders based on their sense of humor? The way you phrased it just seems to have a negative connotation to it.

Also, here is a picture of the Pope wearing Bono's sunglasses.

[–]nilss0n[S] 1 point2 points ago

amended. I would edit the title if i could. I don't know how i feel about bono meeting the pope, but thats an interesting picture.

[–]Racso_ 4 points5 points ago

How you feel about it? As in you're not sure he has the right?

[–]nilss0n[S] 0 points1 point ago

The right? No, i just dont like Bono. To preface this statement I'm not a catholic, but he probably met him under the pretense of his charities, which have actually accomplished fuck all.

[–]WestwardHo 17 points18 points ago

I dunno, you ever see the pope do his Deuteronomy bit? Pretty killer material.

[–]microwave333 12 points13 points ago

I want so badly to understand this joke.

[–]NzStormDragon 9 points10 points ago

I think its implying Deuteronomy is a joke.

[–]VomitEverywhere 0 points1 point ago

Doodoo-ronomy

[–]nilss0n[S] 3 points4 points ago

You made me think of something here. I feel like the popes jokes would only be funny to catholics, if at all. The Dalai Lamas smile really crosses cultural gaps. Even I, as a lifelong atheist, find him very relatable.

[–]Rambl3On 5 points6 points ago

I wish the Dalai Lama would tug on my beard...

[–]Graptoi 1 point2 points ago

Dude, seriously. That was my first thought.

[–]hollarpeenyo 2 points3 points ago

Brand is everywhere these days...

Ever since I saw him speaking to Parliament, I've been a fan.

[–]wial 3 points4 points ago

Actually I once went to The Onion offices which were upstairs in the building where I worked and they told me of all the religious groups they make fun of, only the Dalai Lama seems to like it. Apparently his lawyer is a fan of the Onion and reports back on how much they appreciate the humor (e.g. the classic "Dalai Lama Punches Out Paparazzi"). So there's more truth to the headline that some here say. Mind you, local Tibetans I knew were not like that at all and even wanted to organize to protest The Onion. Sigh.

Good for him, HH understands one must be able to laugh at oneself!

[–]JustCallMeDave 0 points1 point ago

Brings up a good point (and I'm not hating, not trolling, just genuinely curious) is there anywhere in the bible where Jesus makes a joke?

[–]Graptoi 2 points3 points ago

I don't believe so. However, it's supposedly a collection of his teachings not a candid look into his life. From what I understand about the historical Jesus, that he flouted alot of the social norms of his time (by associating with women, beggars, lepers, freaks n geeks) and seemed to be intrinsically-motivated to help people, I imagine that the kind of personality he had comes with a decent sense of humor; likely at his own expense.

[–]JustCallMeDave 0 points1 point ago

You make a good point: as a charismatic leader with a positive message he would have had to have a decent sense of humor.

[–]michael_dorfmanacademic 0 points1 point ago

Yes; Kurt Vonnegut made this joke the subject of his essay "Palm Sunday".

In case you are interested, the punchline is in John 12:8.

[–]JustCallMeDave 0 points1 point ago

Thanks, I will have to download it. In looking for an excerpt I found this interesting video

Well that doesn't seem like a very buddhist thing to say.
