The real problem is the publishers. They have the slickest, not to mention very attractive, salespeople around. They visit with academic coordinators and profs while they're planning their classes and convince them to use the latest textbooks. They offer all kinds of incentives like free pre-made tests, powerpoints and who knows what else. The college bookstores simply carry what the academic chairs and professors ask them to. The mark-up is set by the government (in Canada anyway) so they don't actually make as much profit as they would like to. The publishers end up raking in the big dollars and the students and teachers end up hating the bookstore. Source: I work at a college bookstore. We have this same picture actually posted in our store although ours has some rather stronger language haha.

[–]jefclarkk 5 points6 points ago

You. I like you.

Source: I work in a bookstore at a university too.

[–]Chakks 2 points3 points ago

I do, too (part-time). The bookstore has very little to do with the screwing-over process!

[–]swuboo 0 points1 point ago

You know, I might believe that if there hadn't been independent bookstores just off campus at both my undergraduate and graduate universities that stocked all the same books at 2/3s of the price.

I also thought it was particularly noteworthy that while both the official and independent bookstores offered roughly the same prices for used books, somehow only the independent stores actually seemed to have any when the next semester rolled around.

[–]Chakks 1 point2 points ago

No doubt eh? I've actually heard of students just using Amazon instead as a cheaper alternative, but I'm not aware of any other places in my town to buy books. I think it might have something to do with where the books are initially bought from prior to re-sale. The campus bookstore buys directly from the publisher, who charges the most. Other retailers don't always do so, so finding the newest edition of a book may be more difficult outside of campus. At least that's my understanding of the process in Canada. So I could be wrong, hah.

The stock of used books is peculiar, my only guess is that independent stores have more stock because they will buy any used book. The campus bookstore won't buy used books that were initially purchased on Amazon or from another outlet, they'll only buy books they sold, so that must limit their stock to some extent.

Either way, students get bent over as soon as they walk in the bookstore, and the bookstore goes in dry. I still gotta buy my books for this semester... definitely dreading that transaction.

[–]swuboo 0 points1 point ago

At both of my schools, professors provided their book lists to the off-campus stores in addition to the university bookstore. Both stores purchased the books directly from the publishers. There was, of course, no requirement that professors provide their lists to the off-campus stores, but I never encountered a tenured professor who neglected to do so. New instructors might not know, but they got an earful from their students if they didn't.

With used books, the difference, from what I gathered, was that the official bookstore sent most of them back to the publisher for a rebate, while the unofficial stores kept them around for next semester. The official bookstores were willing to buy used books from other sources; receipts were only required for outright refunds, which were only available for about a week. (Despite the add-drop period usually being about three...)

The only reason anyone ever went to the official bookstore after their first semester was if they had a scholarship that involved a book allowance—which had to be spent at the campus bookstore.

This was in the US, though. As far as I know, there was no governmental control of the prices, except insofar as both institutions were public schools. Both official bookstores were run by Barnes and Noble on contract.

All the evidence I've seen suggests that the difference in prices between the on- and off-campus stores was due entirely to the pricing policies of the stores themselves, and that the lack of availability of used books at the on-campus stores was the result of collusion with the publishers to sell more new books by artificially buying up and destroying the supply of old ones.

[–]Chakks 0 points1 point ago

Interesting! Definitely a different operation from what I've noticed up here. I've never heard of faculty on campus directing students to off-campus stores before. This may just be due to the lack of a good alternative in my small city.

Our bookstore definitely doesn't buy books from external sources -- I'm not entirely sure why, though. I suppose to avoid unnecessary contribution to their inventory, which ultimately loses them money. They do seem to put every effort into stocking the shelves with used books and trying their best to do what's in the best interest of the students (even though they're gouging them anyway, hah).

Definitely some interesting dynamics at campus bookstores. I've only worked part-time hours during the ''rush'' season for this year and last year. I've noticed a recent trend where students are given the option to rent their textbooks for the semester for a reduced price, or to purchase a digital version of the text, also for less.

[–]ToKeYMonsTeR 0 points1 point ago

Isn't the problem then that the academic chairs and professors accept the publishers offers knowing that it will screw over their students? Or that the students willfully pay for overpriced items and thereby further the cycle. It's hilarious you have a picture telling the students they are getting screwed so they can laugh while getting screwed.

[–]nikolifish 0 points1 point ago

I wouldn't go so far as to blame the students. Some professors are willing to deal with an older version. Some aren't, they rather let you fail. The fact is the student has to do what the prof days.

Though the chairs could be to blame. It's a tough call without knowing all the facts. If a particular department is underfunded and this is a quick way to bring in some cash they may have to.

[–]Daliinn 0 points1 point ago

In my experience, they often don't have a choice. Most schools seem to enforce having a required text for most all classes, and what I've seen from my chairs at least is them trying to make the cheapest deals so that students who are taking classes that shouldn't really need a text aren't getting screwed on cost.

[–]canthidecomments -3 points-2 points ago

What you people fail to realize is that college is a Turing test.

If you go ... you already lost.

Let me explain:

Suppose you went to a car dealership and you found a nice car you liked and a salesman approached you.

"I'd like to talk to you about buying this car here," you tell the salesman.

"No problem," says the salesman, "we'll get you written right up."

"How much is it?" you muse. "There's no sticker on this one."

"Oh, we don't put any stickers on any of our cars," informs the salesman. "We don't decide how much we charge you until you demonstrate that you can afford our car."

"Wha?" you reply.

"Yes, before we can tell you the price, we have to see how much money you have. So we'll need you to give us your last 3 years tax returns. That way, we know how much you have and then we can decide how much the car is going to cost you."

"You're kidding me, right?" You reply.

"Oh no, I'm completely serious. We're also going to need to know how much money your parents have. We'll need complete lists of all their assets, because after all, if they have money they're willing to spend to help you get this car, then we want to make sure we capture their money too. So, we can't tell you how much the car is until we find out how many assets and cash they have that they'd be willing to chip in. We'll need their complete financial records, tax forms and credit histories also.

"That way, we can figure out your ... uh .... uh ... your 'discount' ... yeah, that's the ticket."

Would you buy a car from this guy?

No, of course you wouldn't. But you'd buy 4-years of room and board from this guy wouldn't you?

College is a Turing Test. It's designed to figure out who is the stupidest person in the room.

It was you.

[–]Trundles 5 points6 points ago

Just so you know (which you probably do) this doesn't accurately represent universities around the world.

[–]canthidecomments -2 points-1 points ago

I'm speaking of US colleges and universities here.

I've just described what is euphamistically called the "Student Aid" process. It's not about giving aid. It's about detecting how much pain a student and his parents can withstand, with the resulting price of admission set accordingly.

And people fucking fall for this shit.

It's amazing how dumb people are and colleges are very good at testing ways to:

  • a) make people dumber and
  • b) separate them from their money

I have zero sympathy for the dolts who get out of college with $70,000 in completely non-dischargeable debt they now owe the government in return for their Lesbian Studies degrees.

Like Kirk ... I laugh at the superior intellect.

[–]gossypiboma 4 points5 points ago

A Turing test is meant to distinguish computers from humans. I fail to see how college makes you fail.

[–]BeenDrinking 1 point2 points ago

Give him a break. Most people only learn about Turing tests in college. Sucker.

[–]canthidecomments -3 points-2 points ago

If you buy into the whole college debt thing, you're clearly a gullible human.

It's a Turing Test.

[–]gossypiboma 1 point2 points ago

The Turing test is not designed to label humans as gullible or not; it is meant to measure how human computers seem. I'm merely remarking on your wrong use of the term "Turing test".

Oh, and I go to university for free in my country, but I disagree with you in that going to college makes you a gullible human (I might be setting up a straw man here, sorry if I am). If I'm correct in assuming that a college is analogous to university, then it is the best place to learn, even if horribly overpriced; as I am sure it is in the US.

I don't want to write an essay, but it's not gullible if you willingly pay the inflated price because it's the only way of reaching your goal. (degree, knowledge, etc.)

[–]canthidecomments -3 points-2 points ago

Oh, and I go to university for free in my country

You have failed the Turing Test.

You're a gullible human.

You actually believe that you go to university for FREE in your country.

You failed the test. OMG.

And you KNEW what would be ON the test. It was an OPEN BOOK test. And you failed.

[–]gossypiboma 1 point2 points ago

sigh Yeah, you got me. I'm a computer pretending to be a human. Well done.

[–]canthidecomments -3 points-2 points ago

You're a human pretending to have a brain.

That's the test.

You failed.

The first day of class my professor tells us that we have to buy the book new because it come in a bundle with an access code to a website that he is going to use in the teaching process.

By the third class he says he's probably not going to use the website anyway. There was only one person left in class that hadn't bought the bundle.

grr..

[–]Piisthree 3 points4 points ago

Day 1: "Make sure you get the text book. Its a really good source of material and if nothing else, I'll be using exercises from it throughout the course. So you'll definitely need it for that, if nothing else." Day 3 to 15 (if ever): "Now do exercises 3 through 10 on page 20 by next week." $75 Text book never mentioned again. Every. Fucking. Time.

[–]Superplaner 2 points3 points ago

MBA here. What we did is take a bunch of students from second year, ask them (and the teachers who were surprisingly helpful) to summarize which parts from which books were relevant to a specific first year class. Then put together a compendium for that class which we subsequently sold. Repeat for every single class ever. Might not be strictly speaking legal in the US but it worked well in Europe.

[–]zakattak 0 points1 point ago

[–]Msj2705 1 point2 points ago

$54 for a scientific calculator at mine.

I'd be outraged if they weren't always sold old.

They know how to make money.

(Those things should be like $10)

[–]Paradox 0 points1 point ago

$54? A TI-84+ is still over $100

[–]Msj2705 1 point2 points ago

You're talking about a graphing calculator being over a hundred dollars. Which is still a correct price range for those.

I'm talking about scientific calculators - the cheap 8 digit ones 3rd graders use - being sold for $54 when thy should actually cost closer to $10 or $15.

We're not allowed to use graphing calculators in engineering programs, because they can be programmed, so I was looking for a scientific one. That school store, man...

They also sell 4gb USB sticks for $39 at my campus store. Meanwhile, on the internet...

[–]hilhilhil 0 points1 point ago

i always pity someone i see coughing up over a hundred dollars on a textbook at the bookstore, but then i remember that i'm just a lousy pirate scanned-textbook thief.

[–]parliament32 0 points1 point ago

Over a hundred? In my last semester, my texts cost around $250. Per class.

[–]jon_jemima 0 points1 point ago

What does President Palmer have to do with anything?

[–]Whos_that_guy 0 points1 point ago

He was president Palmer in the series "24"

[–]beetlebeepbeep 0 points1 point ago

In one of my units, the prescribed textbook has never been referred to in any of the readings. Of course, this textbook was written by one of the unit coordinators. So pleased I bought mine secondhand so he didn't get any royalties (but not so pleased to have ultimately wasted the money).

[–]walenskit0360 0 points1 point ago

Attending a college that rents out all needed textbooks for classes, this amuses me.

[–]publius4 0 points1 point ago

Public service announcement: If your classes are anything like mine, most if not all course materials can be found online from places like amazon. Always compare prices thoroughly before committing to a purchase, as this can literally save you thousands of dollars over the course of your college education.

I never got this, I mean sure the text makes sense, but what does David Palmer have to do with it?

[–]intelligentresponse 1 point2 points ago

So if you have not figured out you can buy text books online for a fraction of the price you are going to have a bad time. Also if you have the titles of the articles you are suppose to read you can gain access to them through your Universities Library resources. In addition to this Scholars portal and other fine databases will help prevent you from wasting hard earned drug money on dead trees. See if your books are on abebooks.com

[–]michaelgecko 0 points1 point ago

[–]thequirkybondvillian 0 points1 point ago

[–]lucidlinux 0 points1 point ago

[–]jdw817 0 points1 point ago

Fortunately for us at the University of Exeter in England, they actually eliminated our bookstore. Or is it? Yes, they redesigned the campus specifically excluding a bookstore. That is the direction higher education in the UK is taking.

[–]BWO_Bookworm 0 points1 point ago

Bought a "$300" book for $50 on half.com brand new. Won't ever touch my schools bookstore again if I don't have too.

[–]Draziil 0 points1 point ago

Everyone should go to www.tusbe.com. This is a website where students can post their schoolbooks for any price they want and buy books generaly cheaper than even the used books from the uni book store. I've sold back my books twice now and have gotten shafted out of hundreds of dollars. Using this website, I've sold all my books back to good students for cheaper than the bookstores, but still make more then I would have if I had sold my books back to them.

[–]Jinson5 0 points1 point ago

Piratebay...Some books just aren't worth the money.

[–]Paradox 0 points1 point ago

Good luck. Finding textbooks online is like finding porn that is 100% attractive with no gross bits

[–]european_observer 0 points1 point ago

Don't you guys have university libraries? I go there, borrow the books I need, photocopy them for 1/6 -1/8 of the cost and then return 'em the day after. I bought only the books I really liked.

[–]queso_ninja 0 points1 point ago

First semester of college, being the noob that I was, I bought all of my books at the campus Barnes & Noble. Total was $1100. I sold my books back at the end of the semester...got $82. Ass rape.

[–]Kar98_Byf42 0 points1 point ago

Second semester: Amazon and eBay. Third semester: Chinese copies from abebooks. Fourth semester: what I couldn't steal outright on various web sites, I didn't get.

I was so happy to see that I would be able to rent my books for kindle for less than half the price. And these are textbooks that I'm renting, not novels. I've been waiting for this for the last three years.

Amazon.com for textbooks, people! I got most of my college texts for less than $5. You can also sell them for WAY more than the bookstore will give you.

[–]I-hate-reposts 0 points1 point ago

Not really, if you are wise its all good, what you do is buy keep and re sell. in this way you are not loosing much money maybe, max 20 bucks per book or if you buy second hand you can sell at the price you bought and have used it for free!

I graduated last year, and I never bought books until the second week of class. And even then, I would buy them from Amazon. It worked out amazingly.

[–]Locclo 0 points1 point ago

I'm ashamed that it took me two years to figure this out. It's amazing how cheap you can get some of those books wind up being if you buy from ebay or Amazon. My personal favorite was a thick book that I needed for a class that would have run me $125 new. Bought it online for $6.99 plus shipping.

Seriously, fuck college bookstores and textbooks in general. I mean, I get that they're fairly high-quality, full color (generally) and essentially an entire book on one subject...but most of them are literally useful for about 3 or 4 months, then they sit and gather dust on a shelf, or if you're lucky, you get 15% of the price back when you sell it to the bookstore.

[–]Numenius 0 points1 point ago

My school's got a great classifieds site, and you can generally sell books back for about what you bought them used. Try selling to other students and cut out the middleman.

[–]UnknownArchive -4 points-3 points ago

As someone who has worked in that store, lemme teach you how to fuck THEM over.

  • get a ruler, or some pencils, or some cheap shit during the busy as shit time. (Where the lines are like 45 minutes.)
  • ask the casher's name.
  • say nice to meet you [name]
  • go back into the store and get whatever $400 POS book they require, and some cheap supply like pencils again and get back in line.
  • go to a different cashier.
  • put the receipt for the original pencils in the book.
  • when you get to the cashier put the pencils on the counter, the book under your arm (With receipt facing out) and dig in your pockets. They're unlikely to ask you about it, but before they have a chance to, tug on the receipt in the book (Don't pull it out) and say, I got earlier from [name of original person] and nod in their direction.
  • take your pencils and your $400 book and leave.

The benefit of this piece of thievery is because you go through the line, go to the cashier, do a sales interaction, and leave. So any cameras in the place won't be following you as you look like an average customer.

[–]cynix 0 points1 point ago

Don't most books have those anti-theft magnetic strips on them and will set off alarms at the door unless they have been demagnetised by the cashier?

[–]Proditus 0 points1 point ago

Other scenarios:

Scenario 1

Cashier: "Can I see your receipt please?"
You: "Uhhhh...shit. Reddit told me this would work"
Cashier: "Were you trying to steal this book?"
If No: "So you'll be paying for this as well?" Lose $200 and go about your business.
If Yes: "I'm going to need you to wait here..." Get in trouble with the school, put on probation, and lose financial aid

Scenario 2

Cashier 1: "Hey [Cashier 2], did you sell this student this textbook?"
Cashier 2: "No, I don't believe I did. Did you?"
see: Scenario 1

Most stores also keep an active inventory of their textbooks, and require student ID's of students in order to purchase books. If your ID is not logged in the system and the security footage sees you leaving with a book, it'd be relatively easy to catch you and simply kick you out.

I wouldn't recommend that anyone attempt this. It's easier to find other workarounds. For instance, at my school, a backup of every textbook can be found in the library. You can't take it with you, but they also keep photocopiers there if you just need certain parts of it.
