fucking graboids

[–]N0V0w3ls 146 points147 points ago

Nydus Worm

[–]hejner 65 points66 points ago

It's stupid to put a nydus worn so close to marines, though. It's bound to be shut down instantly, unless you are in bronze league.

[–]samsdayfuss 21 points22 points ago

Judging from the micro away from it they would have to be at least gold by my counts. I have seen dumber nydus placement in diamond.

[–]Tayoke12 11 points12 points ago

What the fuck is a Graboid or a Nydus Worm?

[–]aza9999 18 points19 points ago

Graboid - The sandworm monsters from the movie tremors. The first tremors movie was either excellent or terrible based on your appreciation of bad b-grade horror

[–]NicknameAvailable 9 points10 points ago

The first tremors movie was either excellent or terrible based on your appreciation of bad b-grade horror

Yeah, but the subsequent tremors movies were all terrible regardless.

[–]hejner 33 points34 points ago

It's El Blanco! I love that movie. And the sequel. The third one was also pretty good. At least, my 12 year old self though so. Haven't seen 3 in ages.

[–]thatbrady101 16 points17 points ago

AssBlasters if memory serves

[–]Kinbensha 3 points4 points ago

The 4th is pretty terrible to be honest.

This is a 1/89 cav patrol in Iraq in 2006 to 2007. No one was hurt.

[–]Crustyfluffy 130 points131 points ago

My best friend was serving first tour in Afghanistan where he drove the scanning vehicles looking for those IED's. A 120lb pressure triggered explosive was buried too far for his equipment to pick up. Sheared his vehicle completely in half, lifted it ten feet in the air, and spun 180 degrees.

Damn those extremists.

[–]Ocramzeej66 78 points79 points ago

Damn. Is your friend okay?

[–]Crustyfluffy 140 points141 points ago

I thank the fates that be that he remains the silly bastard he always was, yes.

[–]NateTheGreat8 53 points54 points ago

Thank you for delivering!

[–]KrangsArms 3 points4 points ago

Look out! It's the Shredder in his drill transport module!

[–][deleted] 99 points100 points ago

Sheared his vehicle completely in half, lifted it ten feet in the air, and spun 180 degrees.

Yeah, he's fine.

[–]Ashivas 33 points34 points ago

How would he know the specifics of what happened unless there were survivors to tell the story? ;o

[–]skyman724 65 points66 points ago

A second car with a camera.

[–]calicojones 23 points24 points ago

..wait for it.

[–]RockasaurusRex 5 points6 points ago

I still don't see it, what am I waiting for?

[–]JCJen7 2 points3 points ago

I'm getting sick of waiting.

[–]Mista_F 31 points32 points ago

...DARY.

LEGENDARY.

[–]Chrome_Sponge 8 points9 points ago

The debris.

[–]Crustyfluffy 0 points1 point ago

A (perhaps accidentally) relevant question. Had he been killed, we would not have been given the specifics, as we are not technically family.

edit: not even sure he supposed to tell us anyway.

[–]Dunskees 14 points15 points ago

He said "first tour" so I'm guessing his friend survived to go on a second.

[–]Sloppy1sts 8 points9 points ago

Or died before he could.

[–]Func 65 points66 points ago

I am OP's friend, I can confirm that I am dead.

[–]APPLEBLOOMthrowaway 25 points26 points ago

Do an AMA please.

[–]aristideau 4 points5 points ago

Why don't they have the scanning device attached by a 15 metre rod so that the vehicle is pushing it?. That way if an IED is triggered they are at least 10 metres away from the explosion.

[–]Downhilldude 1 point2 points ago

Yeah. They should just sit back and let invading powers do what they want to in their country. How selfish of them.

[–]uncleshart 35 points36 points ago

This is a 1/89 cav patrol in Iraq in 2006 to 2007. No one was hurt.

logged into my stupid pointless profile to call this guy out on his blatant lying. This is in fact from Iraq '06 - '07, but it is from 1st ID, 1st Engineer Battalion, 41st MAC/EN. CO. out of Ft. Riley, KS. The reason I know this is because someone from either or 1st or 2nd Plt. that recorded this on their way back to COP Speicher. I can't exactly provide any proof right now as I'm laying in bed, because I know someone on here will ask for it. I will check back tomorrow with a follow up. I never post anything, just lurk, but trying to claim shit as your own when it obviously isnt is bullshit. sorry.

[–]YaviMayan 6 points7 points ago

This exact clip was on the news here in Michigan just yesterday, along with an interview with the guy in the jeep.

I think you might have just remembered a different video clip.

[–]Pratchett 14 points15 points ago

but trying to claim shit as your own when it obviously isnt is bullshit.

I don't see how he claimed this was his, unless I'm missing a comment elsewhere?

[–]pumpmar 0 points1 point ago

are they already? im not going to feel ok until i know theyre alright

[–]Gramma42ton 11 points12 points ago

No one was hurt

Yeah, we could tell by how the bomb didn't hit anything.

[–]AnotherClosetAtheist 5 points6 points ago

How much more survivability do V-hulls offer against direct underside blasts? Like MRAPs or whatever.

[–]calamormine 12 points13 points ago

You wont get actual figures, more than likely. But V-shaped hulls means they use bigger explosives. This one was just buried too deep. EFPs are the real scary ones though.

[–]imquitehungry 6 points7 points ago

Survivability is much higher in any MRAP. However, each MRAP sacrifices something for their varying levels of protection. I've never seen an MRAP's hull fully penetrated from an IED attack (seen a lot). MATVs typically show the most profound damage to their hull...typically in the form of massive deformation. The transference of energy from IED to floor to service-member can have devastating effects on lower extremities. Keep your damn feet off of the floor.

[–]PorkChop974 2 points3 points ago

This gif is cut from a video my cousin was recording for us back home. If you watch the video, he is the one yelling. They used this video on msnbc. He was interviewed as well.

[–]tubetalkerx 57 points58 points ago

Sandworms!!!! Save the Spice.

[–]Hamsworth 12 points13 points ago

Damn the spice, save the men!

[–]Giddeshan 4 points5 points ago

Damn Harkonnens got their carryall.

[–]CrippleDrifting 28 points29 points ago

They were incredibly lucky that the IED was buried too deep. I feel like they'd have been dunzo if it were on the surface

[–]ohthatsgood 13 points14 points ago

Yes and no. Too deep? Yes, that was lucky, that certainly helped save lives. But also it was poorly timed, and the vehicles do offer some protection against shrapnel and blasts. And, buried IEDs are very dangerous.

[–]jacqueofalltrades 19 points20 points ago

You didn't really provide any reason it was bad that the IED was buried too deep.

[–]thisguynamedjoe 16 points17 points ago

Former military intelligence, who deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq here.

The deeply buried IEDs are in response to the more protected MRAP. To flip one and disrupt a convoy you need a large explosion father down to flip the vehicle if possible or have it drop it into the subsequent crater. Then you fire on those who get out to try and recover the vehicle or the personnel inside. The MRAP is a tough nut to crack.

It also avoids detection by being deeper.

Edit: it's an arms race of sorts. Or an armor race... We referred to these as DBIEDs (deeply burried improvised explosive devices), usually large quantities of HME (homemade explosives). They can be pretty innovative in burying and concealing them.

[–]NuclearWookie 8 points9 points ago

That should be obvious: it was buried so deep that the shrapnel and most of the force were absorbed by the earth and concrete instead of the people in the vehicle.

[–]Derpy1derptrololol 11 points12 points ago

That's good.

[–]readforit 5 points6 points ago

well, it wasnt so good for the pavement, got totally fucked up

[–]NuclearWookie 1 point2 points ago

Ah, I see I misunderstood. The question was more along the lines of why having the IED on the surface would be ineffective, then? It would be more visible and more likely to be spotted, disarmed, or remotely detonated before the target vehicles even got near it.

[–]Derpy1derptrololol 2 points3 points ago

Oh, wait... are we talking good/bad as from the side of the bombers, or from the side of the guys driving the cars?

[–]NuclearWookie 2 points3 points ago

The bombers I guess. They're the ones failing it in the gif.

[–]jacqueofalltrades 3 points4 points ago

That's a good thing. The exact opposite of what I was looking for.

[–]66xsseldoG 2 points3 points ago

Donions.

[–]ROCKJUNKY01 26 points27 points ago

See that's royalty cool because everybody was fine. Although I'm sure some bricks we shat

[–]RunningInSquares 38 points39 points ago

Looks like the Earth shat a brick too.

[–]ROCKJUNKY01 -2 points-1 points ago

Indeed my good sir

[–]asushiroll 22 points23 points ago

I thought all the tremmors where dead

[–]A_walmart_greeter 5 points6 points ago

There is still the albino one. Sigh, I just nerded out huh. Well I'll keep going then. The eggs lie dormant for a couple hundred years so there could be more. The albino one can't breed this didn't split open to become shriekers and is an "endangered species that has to be protected" according to Burt at the end of the third one. So yeah. They're still out there.

[–]VaguelyCondescending 2 points3 points ago

"Mom, take a picture of me with the tremor!"

"They're called graboids!"

[–]jakemurray 6 points7 points ago

This needs to be turned into an upvote gif. So awesome.

[–]cyrismustang 8 points9 points ago

So this is how Iron Man started...

[–]MarleyPants 5 points6 points ago

almost the exact same thing happened to my brother in iraq... 2 ppl were seriously injured. he was in the hum-v in front and the explosion hit the one behind. scared the shit outta me when i found out.

[–]Metatoast 4 points5 points ago

For a second there I thought Tremors were back.

[–]RolandGSD 0 points1 point ago

See, as awesome as that is to see, that's what real "Nope!" is made of. Imo anyway.

[–]timsstuff 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of my first day in Outland, Hellfire Peninsula. Goddamn burrowers were fucking everywhere.

[–]alpoe 0 points1 point ago

[–]SammyDZ 0 points1 point ago

Is this Arrakis? That was definitely a sandworm!

[–]chaos212 0 points1 point ago

Fuckin Tremors, someone call Kevin Bacon

[–]Pickledjoint 9 points10 points ago

My friends brother has hit multiple ieds. Watched a piece of a Humvee go through his friends face. And is still proud to be a marine.

[–]Crustyfluffy 2 points3 points ago

Humvees are now considered illegal to drive in potential IED infested zones. The complete lack of armor and flat underside made them and their occupants completely vulnerable to underside explosions.

Ahhh classic case of ye olde earth pimple

[–]Synchrotr0n 0 points1 point ago

I assume it was an IED buried in the road. I wonder what it would happen if the car was hit by it, looks like they placed the explosive so deep under the road that it would just flip the car without killing anyone in the explosion.

[–]B0h1c4 0 points1 point ago

So...when this happens, they have to assume there is a good chance that someone was watching and manually detonated the IED, correct?

So what is their first course of action? Do they try to find that person? If so, how? Do they take cover and await reinforcements?

Just curious.

[–]RobertTheSpruce 0 points1 point ago

Day 14: as we traveled back to the palace of Atreides in the vehicles, with the precious melange we had traded with the noble fremen, we were attacked by a moderately sized sandworm.

Our skilled driver took action to avoid the initial attack, but soon after, the lead vehicle was gone. The thopters darted to and fro overhead trying to lead the sandworm away, but it was to no avail, the third attack hit our vehicle. I am the only survivor, still many miles away from the safety of the rock palace, with both my legs broken. My stillsuit is failing. I have mere hours left in this heat. I hope this joural will find someone and our story will be passed on.
