Cheap route: kayak. My wife and I got 10' ones with paddles at Dunham's for $200 each.

There's not even a price there. Weird.

Better yet, get a friend that has a boat. I've personally sunk three boats in Miami. They are a pain in the ass.

The two happiest days in a boat owner's life are the day he buys it and the day he sells it. ;-)

That being said, I always think the same thing...

Don't do it. I've never known anybody who has said, without qualifications, "I'm glad I got that boat." Do like funkyb said, get a small craft or two. Less maintenance, less hassle, no docking fees, easier to transport to and from the river.

My parents live in a valley next to a river. The last time there was a major flood, they parked their vehicles on high ground a mile away and then canoed through the floodwaters to get to work. They consider their boat to be a vital part of their transportation strategy.

Heh, OK, point taken. Hopefully we don't have to anticipate that much flooding in Pittsburgh that this will be a concern for us, though.

Yep. Honestly I think one of the reasons I'm so comfortable in the city is the abundance of hills and the guarantee that my home is safe from flooding.

If it floats, flies, or fucks... it's better to rent than buy That being said, if it floats, flies, AND fucks, buy that shit immediately!
