YAY a Browns reference that doesn't involve sucking

[–]vuxa 150 points151 points ago

[–]Lizardizzle 22 points23 points ago

What even is going on there?

[–]GhostdadUC 67 points68 points ago

A giant American flag was being unfolded onto the field and Brandon Weeden didn't realize it was happening (it's his first year in the NFL) and he got caught under it.

[–]vuxa 18 points19 points ago

Yeah, think he was just completely unaware of what was going on while getting hyped up with the team. But if you look there's a Browns personnel member getting lost under there too, maybe the soldiers were jumping the gun a bit

[–]asshold 33 points34 points ago

Those soldiers have to book it, not their fault. The flag can't touch/fall to the ground, so there's a specific way to fold/unfold the giant flag so that it doesn't get neglected or sloppy on the ground.

[–]vuxa 15 points16 points ago

TIL

[–]RedHotBeef 8 points9 points ago

Are you sure? In the gif it looks like it's touching the ground a bunch.

[–]drfrisker 3 points4 points ago

yeah like so what if it touches the ground right? EVERYONE THA GRASS IS LAVA

[–]Rebarbative_Sycophan 1 point2 points ago

It's the angle of the shot, I have seen it many times, and it never touches the ground, unless, A) they fuck up, B) it's hella windy.

[–]AnomalousX12 -1 points0 points ago

I'm sorry, but you can clearly see that it's touching the ground a lot. Look at the blue. There's a sharp angle in the fabric where you can tell it must be resting on the ground. Fabric doesn't... make sharp angles like that on its own if it's not resting on something.

[–]arkitekt47 0 points1 point ago

He's correct. The flag should never touch the ground. I learned this in Scouts and here's the proof (2nd to last bullet point in 'Standards of Respect'): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Flag_Code#Standards_of_respect

[–]GhostdadUC 1 point2 points ago

That flag touches the ground all of the time...I don't know where you are getting that from.

[–]asshold 0 points1 point ago

It brushes the ground, sure. But it should never purposefully be allowed to touch the ground. See here.

Also, I used to be one of the people holding the giant flag for a couple of Tampa Bay Bucs games, which is how I know this.

[–]X2ander 12 points13 points ago

I love how huge this gif is.

[–]Masterbrew -4 points-3 points ago

And how little happens

[–]einssein 0 points1 point ago

Aw, c'mon. I was actually not ashamed for once. Fuck you, buddy.

[–]Pootmaster 24 points25 points ago

As a Browns fan, I saw this and got excited! Then I looked at the score and things went back to how they were...

[–]MechaGodzillaSS 14 points15 points ago

"Factory of sadness"

[–]GhostdadUC 4 points5 points ago

Go go Orange Helmeted Sportsmans of America!

[–]Modestkilla 6 points7 points ago

Yay the Browns still lost.

[–]bowhunter6274 6 points7 points ago

HEY! Watch it. there's always next year.

[–]sleepfighter7 6 points7 points ago

but there's never this year :'(

[–]breadbeard 0 points1 point ago

so browns fans and cubs fans have something in common?

[–]Meatball_express 0 points1 point ago

But they lost....

[–]JoePhatty 169 points170 points ago

That, kids, is why we fasten our chin straps.

[–]nunnally 6 points7 points ago

His helmet was halfway off when they hit anyway.

[–]bookwyrmpoet 46 points47 points ago

But it would not have helped in this case, his head was forced back and down, popped out of the strap, then went flying.

This is a perfect example of why kids should not be getting their skulls smashed together though.

[–]darkplumb90 66 points67 points ago

I think people should realize that if you play football, your body is going to get fucked in some way eventually.

[–]vishra85 17 points18 points ago

I think people should realize that every one of these pros is well aware of the risks/what will happen to there body, and willingly are doing this because of the love of the game.

[–]ignoramus 64 points65 points ago

Yup- Maurice Jones-Drew held out on signing because he felt Jacksonville should offer a contract with more "love of the game".

[–]GoodLuckLetsFuck 20 points21 points ago

Its a short career...You are putting your body through hell to hopefully provide for the rest of your life. Jones-Drew is the main running back on a hopeless team...he is going to get his ass kicked...i'd ask for more money too.

[–]mrsammercer 17 points18 points ago

You can love both money and football.

[–]Neodymium 2 points3 points ago

Plenty of them regret it when they are left with brain damage.

[–]JTrilogy 6 points7 points ago

Love of the money.

FTFY

[–]sargeantb2 1 point2 points ago

both

[–]LookInTheDog 3 points4 points ago

Scientists are just recently figuring out the risks/what will happen to their* body, so I'm gonna say no, the average football player doesn't actually know what the result will be in 40 years (if they even live that long).

[–]Scribbl3d_Out 1 point2 points ago

Football is very hard on your body. I've played 8 years and I have so many issues. I have bad knees, a weak left arm due to nerve problems, poor posture due to a chest that is to strong and a back that is not strong enough, neck problems, splitting head aches randomly. I could go on forever.

I've had 20 X-rays at least in my 8 years, a recent CT scan, and a MRI coming up, and I'm only just about to turn 18. I've done countless hours of physio and chiropractic therapy. And a possible surgery coming up also on my shoulder to free up some nerves from being pinched.

[–]LookInTheDog 0 points1 point ago

Oof. That's rough man. I was a small kid, so I was directed away from football from outside forces, which is probably a good thing because I really wanted to play. Hope the medical issues get better.

[–]Herp_McDerp 0 points1 point ago

What position are you playing? I played for 11 years at WR/CB and I don't have any of these problems. I have had three concussions, but other than that I don't have any lasting injuries besides an unfused part of a vertebrae that I broke off. But no chronic pain or injuries

[–]skelly11 0 points1 point ago

Offensive Line?

[–]stonerism 0 points1 point ago

Eh... To an extent yes, but having tutored athletes, they're also conditioned to view that as the only thing they can do and aren't given much in the way of opportunities otherwise.

[–]jwoodson -5 points-4 points ago

they can't know the risks, cause no one really knows what they are yet.

[–]TraMaI 3 points4 points ago

Actually no, his chin strap is across his nose/mouth when he drops for the tackle.

[–]Leaningthemoon 0 points1 point ago

After 7 hours only you and three other people have noticed this???

[–]JoePhatty -2 points-1 points ago

It was just a joke. But thank you for ruining it anyways.

[–]Juiceman17 9 points10 points ago

[–]lovesdogz 13 points14 points ago

It's like they're working together to catch the helmet on his head.

[–]DudeWithTheNose 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit, what are the odds?!

[–]wannabebullwinkle 0 points1 point ago

They said it broke right before the play.

[–]Genmaken -4 points-3 points ago

That, kids, is why you don't run towards a man on steroids.

FTFY

[–]Shade_of_Gray 63 points64 points ago

This is why NFL players get mental afflictions in their old age.

[–]yungjaf 2 points3 points ago

Can't they make helmets out of some softer material? The hardness of the helmet encourages the helmets' use as a battering ram.

[–]Bortjort 30 points31 points ago

[–]snoharm 17 points18 points ago

[–]The_MGMT 3 points4 points ago

[–]BreakRulesGetCoins -1 points0 points ago

except this thing is inflated with helium, an increasingly rare and expensive gas.

[–]THland 1 point2 points ago

welp, sounds like Hydrogen is the best option then. ಠ_ಠ

[–]mbafk 7 points8 points ago

They could. Right now they try and balance the protection of your head with how much damage you can do to other people. It is a fine line to walk. I had this explained to me by a professor who designs football gear.

[–]MrTurkle 6 points7 points ago

The only way this problem will be alleviated is if they take away the helmets all together. Rugby and Aussie Rules still have concussions, but they aren't as bad as we we see in American Football. Maybe MAYBE if they take away the face cages players won't feel so invincible, but I think getting rid of the helmets is the only option.

[–]yungjaf 1 point2 points ago

I think there should be helmets to avoid and prevent head wounds and blunt trauma to a certain part of the skull. However, helmets should be made of a softer material - Kevlar seems the most logical to me.

I agree with you with the facemask - they provide a false sense of invincibility.

[–]MrTurkle 3 points4 points ago

The players would instantly stop leading tackles with their heads if they weren't wearing helmets.

[–]yungjaf 5 points6 points ago

yea but one stray elbow or collision could result in a cracked skull or worse. The NFL is not more physical, but is more violent than AUF and Rugby, so you can't apply the same rules to it. Can't risk those injuries.

I think getting rid of facemasks and a soft material helmet would deter the head-tackles enough.

[–]MrTurkle -3 points-2 points ago

You think the violence is because of the helmet or just inherent to the game? Rugby and football are very similar in their playing, but football days have the passes across the middle....

[–]Pointer1VB 3 points4 points ago

Rugby and football are extremely different in their playing. Rugby tackles are completely different because they don't care if a guy gets an extra yard or two (there are no first downs). The defender falls backwards dragging the guy with the ball down to the ground. There is violence, but it isn't two guys sprinting directly at each other trying to knock the other down violence. Due to an extra yard in football being a lot more important, the way that a defender hits is completely different.

[–]vishra85 -2 points-1 points ago

You clearly have never played football. If you lead with your head, you're going to get your block knocked off. Your head can't push with the same force as a shoulder can, nor would you want it to. It houses some rather precious squishy stuff, so try to have it force aside something much harder/difficult to move is a bad idea.

In general, a running back is taught to lead with their shoulder. As a defensive back, you normally attempt to lead into a tackle with your shoulder, then wrap up the ball carrier and take them to the ground. As you can clearly see, that is a)not what will happen evertime and b)sometimes people are bad with their basic mechanical skills.

As for the hardness of the helmets: the helmet has to be rigid or it won't be able to properly protect a persons' head. The inside then has an about 1" thick layer of padding that lessons the force of any impact with it. Thanks to the fact that everyone is wearing pads/helmets, the feeling of impacts are lessened significantly. It can still hurt like a mofo, and often does given the fact that people fly around as hard and fast as they can go, but whenever a helmet collides with a padded area/other helmet, it doesn't work quite the way I think you imagine it does.

Source: played football for over a decade in elementary school, high school, and college. Given (and received) hits like the one in gif.

[–]yungjaf 12 points13 points ago

You clearly have never played football.

Playing football doesn't make you an authority on helmet material and player safety. Fundamental tackling is safe, I agree, but the fact is that too many players DON'T tackle safely. The neurological issues former players face are not going to go away unless we advance helmet design.

The helmets today do well to absorb shock applied to the head and skull, but don't protect the brain from concussion or the neck from whiplash.

With the advancements in technology, I'm sure there is a Kevlar type of material that could do more shock absorbing and not transfer all the energy of a collision to the neck.

I love football, but if the league wants to persist into the future, it needs to take player safety a lot more seriously. That includes reform and advancement to equipment.

[–]phliuy 0 points1 point ago

The hardness of the helmet is meant to dissipate the force over the entire helmet, lessening the force on any one part of the head.

One part of the helmet is hit, and the rigidity of the helmet allows for almost all parts of the padding to absorb some of the shock. If the helmet were not as hard, only the part of the helmet that got his would be able to dissipate the shock.

[–]Mylesd13 14 points15 points ago

As an Eagles fan, this pains me.

[–]tloftxj 5 points6 points ago

As Kurt Coleman, this pains me.

I wish I was a NFL player.

[–]srutherf 0 points1 point ago

Don't worry, I think his two picks more than made up for it

[–]truthseeker919 34 points35 points ago

This literally just happened.,

[–]bowhunter6274 14 points15 points ago

Literally?

[–]muNICU 17 points18 points ago

Figuratively speaking, this literally just happened.

[–]captstix 2 points3 points ago

Literally.

[–]smokeyhobo 20 points21 points ago

I went to high school with that guy. Its weird seeing shit like that

[–]theLPguy 7 points8 points ago

Richardson or Coleman?

[–]smokeyhobo 11 points12 points ago

Coleman

[–]22Vader22 2 points3 points ago

Went to HS with him as well. Coleman that is

[–]smokeyhobo 3 points4 points ago

THUNDER BOLTS BITCH!!!

[–]ballsnjunk 6 points7 points ago

That's funny, because I went to high school with Richardson.

[–]OnlysayswhatIwant 2 points3 points ago

You should tell him to come back to Ohio State. I miss having him in the secondary :(

[–]TrippKing3 4 points5 points ago

Trent Richardson is terrifyingly strong. He's so ripped that when you see him on the street it's like seeing a cartoon character or someone out of a comic book. I miss having him on campus, dude loved his football and big titties.

[–]iJulesWinnfield 0 points1 point ago

Have any funny stories with him on campus?

[–]TrippKing3 2 points3 points ago

Nah nothing too out there. Saban keeps the boys in line, and when they do get wild it doesn't really get out. He just used to always hit on my one friend though with these big ole hooters. Actually there was one thing a little funny, he and Julio Jones used to bowl together. You'd see them with Mark Ingram at the lanes. They all had custom balls and would normally have +150 games. Those guys were super athletes.

[–]soccerlionheart 7 points8 points ago

Bastard only got me three fantasy points today....

[–]vishra85 0 points1 point ago

If you had taken the Eagles D like I did, you would've been a bit more happy ;) Still pissed at how little MJD did today though :(

[–]BearsAndSharks 15 points16 points ago

that hit isn't totally the reason for his helmet coming off. he got blocked right before that and that's what loosened it. also no he wasn't really wrecked, he made the tackle.

[–]BrianWantsTruth 5 points6 points ago

Yeah you can see that the helmet isn't on correctly when they hit.

[–]esuma10 1 point2 points ago

Not so much made the tackle as provided a wall

[–]Charbonneau85 15 points16 points ago

That's a nice helmet-to-helmet hit initiated by the offensive player that he won't get fined for.

[–]UnawareItsaJoke 25 points26 points ago

He plays for the Browns, don't you think that's enough of a fine?

[–]fermented-fetus 2 points3 points ago

Even if the defender initiated the hit it would not warrant a fine.

[–]Elmos_BFF -3 points-2 points ago

And that is a shame... He should be fined for that.

[–]lichnor 24 points25 points ago

The NFL's crackdown on safety will continue to be the joke it is until it cracks down on RBs using their helmets as weapons as Richardson clearly did in this instance. He saw the defender and deliberately lowered his helmet and speared the defender. A defender does this and it's tens of thousands in fines and possibly suspensions to follow.

[–]fermented-fetus 12 points13 points ago

It's not a fine if it is a runner, the ruling only affects defenseless receivers and QB's.

[–]Jet_Age_of_Tomorrow[S] 5 points6 points ago

Putting your head down the to go to response from an RB trying to scrounge out as many yards as he can from contact. It's not an intentional way to hurt Coleman. It's his first game he wouldn't do anything stupid like that.

[–]lumpaholic 8 points9 points ago

The announcers were complimenting him on his toughness. "Now THAT'S how you finish a run!!" I was amazed at the double standard. If the exact same thing happened but Coleman had the ball they would be crucifying the defender, he'd get a penalty, and almost certainly a fine.

[–]fermented-fetus 20 points21 points ago

There is no double standard, you guys are talkingabout two different scenarios. The only time helmet to helmet is not allowed is when the guy is considered a defenseless receiver or he is the QB in the pocket. This guy was not a defenseless receiver nor a qb in the pocket.

[–]lavacahacemu 13 points14 points ago

yup, defender wasn't in the right position --> got pancaked

[–]mattsprofile -3 points-2 points ago

Doesn't change the fact that helmet to helmet contact should never happen on purpose.

It's like saying that you're not allowed to hit people with your car when they don't expect it. Yeah, but you also shouldn't do it when they see you coming, either.

[–]Elmos_BFF -1 points0 points ago

The NFL needs to crack down on this stuff

[–]Tirare 2 points3 points ago

...Those rules are made for players who are unable to defend themselves. Im pretty sure Richardson knew that he was heading towards him. "Lowest man always wins" is a motto that has been drilled into every football player from the beginning of time. Also this guy is a safety, throw yourself at his legs and hold on. There isnt any reason to go head to head with this guy unless you are trying to stop him on the goal line or a 3rd down conversion. But to your point giving out fines for running too hard is the dumbest thing i have heard in a while.

[–]elessarjd 3 points4 points ago

Because a defender initiates the hit. Most of the time, ball carriers don't know when and where a hit is coming from, so they hunch down and keep pushing forward. Big diff.

[–]Elmos_BFF -3 points-2 points ago

I'm with you on this 100%

[–]beefwich -3 points-2 points ago

Yep-- and, unfortunately, it's how they're taught from Pop Warner to high school to college to the NFL. Lower your shoulder, tuck your chin, keep your knees up and put your screws into the defender.

If the NFL is going to outlaw helmet-to-helmet hits, it needs to be across the board-- not just receivers and QBs.

[–]kkloww 1 point2 points ago

I'm a Browns fan and I get it that this was a big hit, but Kurt Coleman still held on and brought him down... its not like Richardson ran him over and kept going, Richardson just hit the bottom of Coleman's helmet with his crown and made it come off.

[–]mikeiscool92 5 points6 points ago

Trent Richardson. shit son.

[–]X2ander 8 points9 points ago

Anyone want to make it so his helmet is just full of karma and flies everywhere?

[–]karatepencilcase -1 points0 points ago

Get your shit together, Eagles.

[–]Crazedgoalie56 7 points8 points ago

The Eagles won the game today. We did get our shit together.

[–]mystery79 4 points5 points ago

As a Browns fan though, the Eagles should have won by 2 touchdowns. Weeden's ineptitude overshadowed how bad Vick was today.

[–]Ninjatertl 1 point2 points ago

I dunno, the Browns had two TD opportunities that weren't taken. I mean, the Eagles did too, but still. I mean, with the number of interceptions it is really hard to tell who should have won.

[–]ElPhantasma13 0 points1 point ago

Yea, 4 picks is nothing to laugh at... I hope this is not a sign of things to come...

[–]karatepencilcase 2 points3 points ago

Oh, that's good to hear. I didn't watch the game cause of schoolwork.

[–]BoomHershelShot -3 points-2 points ago

Eagles looked terrible, barely winning against a weak team. Also dogkiller threw some really bad picks.

[–]Elmos_BFF -1 points0 points ago

Each team threw 4 picks... I don't see how him being a dog killer has anything to do with it.

[–]rea557 -1 points0 points ago

If Vick can get control of these turnovers he will be one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and that guy is probably a punkass cowboys fan.

[–]elligre 2 points3 points ago

What, no Roll Tide?! That is Trent Richardson ladies and gents.

[–]razthecat 2 points3 points ago

roll tide

[–]aclockworkoranje 0 points1 point ago

Seriously, this culture of celebrating big hits is what leads more players to do adventurous and wrong tackling, which leads to brain damage and mental issues.

[–]stickman842 0 points1 point ago

Look like rugby players wearing pads. Gay.

[–]Duffyd680 0 points1 point ago

Bad hit. His head was straight down.

[–]BrockN 0 points1 point ago

Up don't you mean?

[–]Duffyd680 1 point2 points ago

I meant the running back. Having your head down is the most common way people people break their neck in football.

[–]burninrock24 0 points1 point ago

No spearing?

[–]Elmos_BFF -3 points-2 points ago

I'm with you on that one. It's straight Bull Crap that he did not get called for spearing. And not only that he should be fined for it on top of it.

[–]burninrock24 -1 points0 points ago

I totally understand the advocates for getting rid of helmets all together because they say that they are being used as weapons.

That being said, for safety reasons I still would keep the helmets, but the leading with the head and helmet to helmet contact needs to really be monitored.

[–]Elmos_BFF -1 points0 points ago

Agreed. I believe that any player who does spear should be suspended for 1 game and be fined a few thousand.

Every NFL team has a poster in their locker room that ALL PLAYERS see. And yet the message it portrays is still not getting through. I mean look at what happened to Kevin Everett.... Was that not enough to get the message across? The NFL needs to crack down on this and I am with you 100%

[–]debaser28 0 points1 point ago

That's so strange. You don't have to tell a normal person not to hit something with their head.

[–]Elmos_BFF -1 points0 points ago

I know... Weirdest thing... I guess once you start getting paid millions you just loose common knowledge

[–]debaser28 1 point2 points ago

They do it before they make millions.

[–]elessarjd 1 point2 points ago

He didn't spear. Spearing is when a defender lunges forward, leaving their feet and leads with their helmet. Defenders initiate hits, most of the time ball carriers don't and put there head down, cover the ball and prepare to get nailed.

[–]Elmos_BFF -1 points0 points ago

An offensive player can spear too. Spearing is lowering your dead down going head first into another player. In the video you can clearly see that he sees the defender and then lowers his head down into the defenders chest. It's a spear. But I shared the same thought as you at first then I looked it up

[–]bowhunter6274 0 points1 point ago

I can't stop watching this.

[–]Shruglife 0 points1 point ago

first watch there was a brief moment that i thought his head popped off

[–]shaftdestroyer 0 points1 point ago

Besides Phil Dawson, this may have been the only good thing to come out of the Browns' offense today.

[–]BelViso 1 point2 points ago

I was at the game, the crowd went CRAZY after this.

[–]chrzansm 0 points1 point ago

Relevant being a Browns' fan.

[–]razthecat -1 points0 points ago

holy shit that's beautiful. i hate he left Alabama early but son gon get paid and bring the pain.

[–]themauwinator 1 point2 points ago

He's lucky he didn't break his neck. I hate spearing.

[–]mandog202 1 point2 points ago

It's weird to me seeing Trent not in crimson and white

[–]HandsomeB 0 points1 point ago

Sadly, the highlight of Richardson's debut.

Kind of funny that if it had been the defender taking a back down with a hit like that it would have been a 15 yard penalty.

Arh, puleezeee. They need to check out an AFL match. No helmets and no padding of ANY kind and they bump heads like this ALL THE TIME.

This genuinely confuses the hell out of me. This would really be the first question I asked a pro football player if I met one.

Why are these things always flying off during pro games? Are pro athletes just way more forgetful/lazy? It doesn't seem likely. They know more than anyone the price of injuries, and the helmets always look like the chin straps are fully buttoned.

So the hits are that much harder? The hits are definitely way harder than any other level, but so much so that your skull squeezes through the tiny space between the chin strap and the helmet?

No criticism. I just don't get the logistics of how this happens so frequently in the pros.

His helmet was already halfway off yes, but that doesn't mean he didn't have it done up properly.

You'd be surprised how well sweat can lubricate your chin strap in a football helmet and allow it to slide around. I've played football for 8 years and have this happen many times because of just a sweaty chin strap. It's super painful when that chin strap is being drug up your face and has to make it over your nose.

Also to you guys saying it wasn't done up properly, there is also a fine line between to tight and to loose, to tight and you cannot fit a mouth guard in your mouth and you'll be biting your lip, to loose and well it won't stay on properly. I've always preferred a little loose compared to way to tight, helmets feel like a vice on your head when you hit with a super tight chin strap.

Best way to a broken neck/spine, spear hitting is dangerous and Coaches need to learn/teach proper hitting techniques in youth football; athletes need to learn to keep their HEAD UP I.e Donnovan Hill (13y/o)life changed forever after a tackle leading with his head. ESPN's "Outside The Lines" recently shared Donnovan's story. Here is the link about our local Pop Warner and one sad evening during the Midget Orange-bowl Championship game last season. http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=8307824
