Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

This "effect" is achieved by using a polarizing filter.

Relevant wiki - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polarizing_filter_(photography)

[–]boom929 43 points44 points ago

I've worn polarized sunglasses for years and never thought about using the same effect with a lens filter. Now I feel a little dumber.

[–]trouser_trout 5 points6 points ago

Polarizing filters also great for landscapes with blue sky, as they're change the color of the sky from light blue to a darker more dramatic blue.

[–]trebs21 0 points1 point ago

True but from what I ve heard that can also be archieved Sooo... If you have the filter anyway its cool. If not only buy the filter if you need it for the removal or strengthening of that mirroring effect. [Only knowledge from guides tough]

[–]Average_Joke 116 points117 points ago

A helpful link up-voted to the top? Are we in Bizarro Reddit?

[–]I_Am_Vladimir_Putin 72 points73 points ago

I'm still looking for a pun.

[–]woopledoer 111 points112 points ago

That water must be filtered.

[–]Falkner09 25 points26 points ago

water that collects in quarries often looks like this, and from the rubble in the background, this is clearly a quarry. I'm used to seeing it, my dad owned atrucking company so I always went with him to haul loads of rock.

Question to the informed: why does quarry water always look so clear? I'm guessing it's because all the topsoil is removed, leaving no room for mud and therefore also little for microorganisms to live on.

[–]Manos_Of_Fate 27 points28 points ago

Water too pure has no fish.
</Jackiechan>

[–]wayndom 25 points26 points ago

Actually, any time you find water in nature with no visible life forms in it, it's an indication that the water is poisonous.

[–]Hounmlayn 18 points19 points ago

Unless you're the first.. That's what humans love to be, right? First?

[–]yumagamo 4 points5 points ago

If beautiful and still I'm the first somehow, the water is fishy.

[–]BeastlyChicken 1 point2 points ago

Wait, so are there fish or not?

[–]mb86 5 points6 points ago

Not every time. Western Brook Pond in Newfoundland is actually low on marine life because of how pure the water is. There's not enough dissolved oxygen or other nutrients for most life to survive.

[–]sneakymeat 8 points9 points ago

The water may look like this if it is sodic or contains high levels of aluminum (which reflect the sun and gives the pond its vivid blue colouring). These minerals or metals also settle the sediments removing the turbidity in the pond

[–]stuckin45750 3 points4 points ago

Upvote for the word turbidity. You don't get to use that word in a proper sentence often enough and I like it !

[–]bipo 0 points1 point ago

My environment protection professor told us, that it's the little particles in the water, that scrub off all the plant life, thus rendering water food-less for any other kind of life. We have a clear blue river running through an area with calcite quarries.

[–]Teephphah 1 point2 points ago

Exactly. "Quarry" sort of implies that the substrate is made of rock rather than something more finely particulate (soil, clay, sand, etc.). Add to that the fact that there typically isn't a source of current in a quarry (it's a hole in which water has pooled, it has nowhere to flow), and you can see how any small amount of sediment that there may have been in the water will eventually sink to the bottom making the water appear crystal clear. Until something comes along to stir up the silt.

Also, I pulled this all completely out of my ass. But it sounds like it would make sense to me.

[–]pull_my_finger_AGAIN 28 points29 points ago

Water you talking about?

[–]I_Am_Vladimir_Putin 21 points22 points ago

I think it's pretty clear.

[–]pull_my_finger_AGAIN 15 points16 points ago

I sea what u mean

[–]smoke_crack 4 points5 points ago

Looks lake you found a pun thread.

[–]Pinky676767 4 points5 points ago

Eh I'll throw a pun in here for the halibut.

[–]GoDawgs15 0 points1 point ago

I PONDered the same

[–]PyreXx -1 points0 points ago

I still don't sea what everyone's talking about.

[–]Evilsmako 1 point2 points ago

Clearly Reddit is getting better?

[–]feynmanwithtwosticks 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, this being r/pics I assumed this picture would have top comments consisting of belligerently insulting the OP for "bad photshop crap" and a lot of "I fucking hate how this fake crap still manages to get upvoted". You know, like every other actual good photograph in r/pics. It isn't like this is a picture of a hidden room that someone found online and is pretending it is in their house.

[–]JoshGTO 0 points1 point ago

bizarro Stormy

edit* I'm helping

[–]Allaphon -1 points0 points ago

Are we in Bizarro Reddit?

Well, the exact same comment appears at the top every time this repost gets reposted... So no, this is just regular familiar reddit

http://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/l9gig/crystal_clear/

[–]imsabbel 11 points12 points ago

Yup. The only filters (desides neutral density for special applications) that make still sense in the age of photoshop, as this cannot be corrected after the fact.

Also, just to remove any kind of missconceptions:

Modern camera filters are called "CPL" for circular polarized light. Despite the name they still linearily polarize light. They just convert the part of the light passing the first linear filter to circular polarized light using a lambda/4 filter mounted after the linear polarizer. If they did not do that, you would get problems with the CCD/Filter stack of the digital camera not being equally sensitive to all polarization directions.

[–]PorchMonkeyKike 0 points1 point ago

TIL. Thanks

[–]Shamson 3 points4 points ago

So what you're saying is they help dudes take pictures easier?

[–]atremt 3 points4 points ago

Filters aren't quite irrelevant yet! Besides ND and polarizing filters, there are still uses for IR filters, soft focus/diffusing filters, and close-up filters. Even color filters can still potentially be useful, since there's a limited amount of color data any camera can capture.

[–]yeayoushookme 4 points5 points ago

Don't forget UV filters. Without one, you could easily scratch your lens.

[–]imsabbel 2 points3 points ago

Close up filters are way worse than any real macro lens.

Soft focus/diffusion filters can be done MUCH better in post processing.

IR filters are pointless with modern DSLRs (except if you mod them), as the CCD stack as a 680nm lowpass filter integrated.

[–]BristolShambler 19 points20 points ago

Not really, using a CPL filter just gets rid of reflections, so cuts down on surface glare. This won't do anything to make the water more or less clear, that's due to the crap that's floating in it.

[–]imsabbel 31 points32 points ago

Yes, the water in that shop is execptionally clear. But still, the main factor for the "floating" appearance is that there is no reflection of the boat, which was removed using a polarization filter.

[–]ZombieGrenadier 7 points8 points ago

A lens / filter you put on a camera is not a shop. There were ways of 'zoom-enhanc'ing photographs before that tool was invented. ಠ_ಠ

[–]WizardsMyName 4 points5 points ago

Probably meant to type 'shot' and just missed.

[–]astazangasta -1 points0 points ago

Implausible. The p is nowhere near the t. Come on, be serious, man, what's with you?

[–]italia06823834 2 points3 points ago

This is true. Also clear water is often a sign that there is not a lot of life in it (at least in the case of lakes/ponds/non-flowing water) since it's all the living things that make that crap that's floating in it.

Also you don't need a fancy camera specific filter if you've got a decent pair of polarized sunglasses. Obviously it won't work as well but it will still work. Just make sure you hold the sunglasses in front of the lens the way they are meant to be worn. Otherwise instead of cutting out glare off the water you'll let it all through.

[–]Era_Ojdanic 11 points12 points ago

Didn't know for this filter... thanks for link.

[–]mmmtoastmmm 2 points3 points ago

This is what disappoints me a little about nature photography. I get all excited thinking that I could one day witness something as beautiful with my own eyes, then I realize somebody added some filter and it doesn't actually look like that in reality.

[–]089324908340 4 points5 points ago

It still looks pretty much like that. The polarizer just gets rid of most of the glare. I took this without a polarizer.

[–]wayndom 2 points3 points ago

(a) A polarizing filter couldn't and wouldn't make the water any clearer, it can only reduce surface reflections, and (2) the water in the photograph has plenty of surface reflections, just not in the foreground, where the angle of the water surface (in the neighborhood of 30 degrees, relative to the camera) is ideal for not showing reflections.

So, no, it's not an "effect" of a polarizing filter. It's an "effect" of really clear water, competently photographed.

[–]PhreaksChinstrap 1 point2 points ago

After reading that I understood why you put effect in quotes. So really this is how the water looks, just minus the reflections we normally associate water with.

[–]oscarcanbuild 0 points1 point ago

so it has to start out really clear though right?

[–]typhoon_2099 0 points1 point ago

I had polarizes sunglasses when I was a salmon farmer, they were ridiculously good shades.

[–]CheesusDairyMessiah 0 points1 point ago

You would need a polarizing filter to take this picture, but the water needs to be really, really clear in order for this to work. You couldn't do this to water that wasn't clear already.

[–]LoneWave 0 points1 point ago

I've got polarized shades so it's like a whole new world with them on :)

[–]RionMan 57 points58 points ago

A filter so polarized, it makes water look very transparent.

[–]tarheel295 188 points189 points ago

Repost so clear, i knew what the picture would be from the title.

[–]AKMask 37 points38 points ago

I believe my thoughts on this situation can best be summed up by performing this monologue from the 1994 movie Mallrats by Kevin Smith. Ahem.

One time my cousin Walter got this cat stuck in his ass. True story. He bought it at our local mall, so the whole fiasco wound up on the news. It was embarrassing for my relatives and all. But the next week, he did it again. Different cat, same results, complete with another trip to the emergency room. So I run into him a week later at the mall and he was buying another cat! And I said to him, "Jesus, Walt, what are you doing? You know you're just gonna get this cat stuck in your ass, too. Why don't you knock it off?" And he said to me, "Brodie, how the hell else am I supposed to get the gerbil out?" My cousin was a weird guy.

Aaaannnnd... scene.

[–]clockwork_zero 26 points27 points ago

My cousin Walter jerked off in public once. True Story. He was on a plane to New Mexico when all of a sudden the hydraulics went. The plane started spinning around, going out of control. So, he decides it's all over and whips it out and starts beating it right there. So, all the other passengers take a cue from him and they start whipping it out and beating like mad. So, all the passengers are beating off, plummeting to their certain doom, when all of a sudden the hydraulics kick back in and the plane rights itself. It lands safely and everyone puts their pieces or whatever, you know, away and de-board. Nobody mentions the phenomenon to anyone else.

[–]RAMBOASTIN 19 points20 points ago

Well, did he cum?!?

[–]clockwork_zero 5 points6 points ago

Jesus Christ, there are some things you just don't discuss in public.

[–]P1h3r1e3d13 0 points1 point ago

And, fittingly, my next tab was this post.

[–]lordlicorice 4 points5 points ago

I was expecting the one with the wrecked wooden rowboat.

[–]Average_Joke 4 points5 points ago

To be fair, it could've also been the picture of that supposedly deep lake that looks really shallow.
