I always viewed Rorschach as more of a deist type actually, and I thought it fit better with his character. Perhaps he believes that god no longer cares for his creation, that god is even disgusted by our filthy acts and how off principle we have become (We all know Rorschach is a man of principles).

I wouldn't call Rorschach an atheist, or at least from just basing it off this quote. I feel that Adrian Veidt would be much more likely to be the atheist out of the two (As Veidt and Rorschach were portrayed as polar opposites in the novel in many ways).

Edit: This quote from the novel is more accurate and actually holds more to the idea that Rorschach is an atheist. His beliefs as far as whether or not there is a god seems to be conveyed quite differently between the novel and movie, so I think I'll admit defeat here and say Rorschach was probably an atheist. Curious now if anyone had any insight on Veidt's views on religion/theism?

I'd say the biggest difference between Rorschach and Veidt is that the former is a moral absolutist while the latter is a pure consequentialist.

Rorschach sees things as only black and white, and that 'black' must always be punished no matter what. This typically goes hand-in-hand with theism, as most other philosophies would struggle with finding an accurate guide for what actually defines 'black and white.' Oddly enough, it does seem as though Rorschach is in fact an atheist, which calls into question where he thinks his moral absolutes come from.

Veidt, I'd say, is a lot simpler. Consequentialism is normally affiliated with Humanism, and this seems to be Veidt's philosophy. He's more concerned with promoting the greater good for humanity, even if it means killing millions to save billions. Though I don't recall any quotes from the book or movie, I'm pretty sure Veidt's an atheist as well.

Dang, what kind of theism do you get this from? Yikes.

On the same subject, is /r/atheism leaking? Why are people jumping on the (a)theism here? God damn.

I know I sound ignorant but may I ask where this quote is from?

The Watchmen. If it wasn't in the movie, it was from the novel.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

I believe it was in both.

I haven't read or seen it in a while. Thanks for the clarification.

Let me preface my comment with this. The Watchmen is my favorite graphic novel and my sons know that. So, when the edited version of the movie ended up on TV, I let them (ages 11 and 8) watch it with some additional editing on my part. My eight year old fell in love with the black and white view Rorschach had of the world. To him, it made perfect sense. He also loved that he was a superhero who didn't necessarily look like one. So, he had me order him a Rorschach mask/ costume for him to wear at DragonCon (he wore it as much as he could beforehand!). The rest of the family joined him in the parade as Silk Spectre, Hooded Justice, and the Comedian. We even found him a handmade Rorschach doll in the artist room that he carries around like a teddy bear. To my son, this character symbolizes an outsider who can save the world, much like he pictures himself. To me, I think Rorschach does the right thing in his mind no matter the consequences, something I am unable to do. Maybe my son will change his mind as he grows up and I actually let him read the Watchmen, but for now he has a hero.
