It's hard to realize how big Central Park really is...

[–]awesomemanftw 29 points30 points ago

Is swimming allowed in that lake?

[–]logged_in_for_this 53 points54 points ago

No, it's actually pretty quiet

[–]fin425 5 points6 points ago

No you can't and it's a reservoir not a lake. You can go in canoes and row boats in the other lake. It is on the top right of this picture. It's bigger than it looks because there are other parts that are covered by the trees.

[–]bigburd 2 points3 points ago

It's hilarious that people are downvoting you for misspelling that.

[–]awesomemanftw 4 points5 points ago

thanks for the heads up.

[–]gamegyro56 3 points4 points ago

What did he/she misspell? "Aloud" instead of "allowed"?

[–]bigburd 1 point2 points ago

Yeah

[–]Captain_awesomepenis -1 points0 points ago

Does it really matter?

[–]annoyinglyclever 4 points5 points ago

This is Reddit. It always matters.

[–]gamegyro56 -1 points0 points ago

I was just trying to get the joke.

[–]badmustache -1 points0 points ago

Uhm, relative to the size of manhattan. You can walk leisurely around it in a morning. It's perimeter is 6 miles.

[–]anthdx -1 points0 points ago

That's like 6 kilometres?

[–]TheRealCalypso 8 points9 points ago

6 miles is 10 kilometers.

[–]anthdx 1 point2 points ago

Heh. Noted.

[–]Joe2478 284 points285 points ago

Central Park? Are you homeless?

[–]interputed 43 points44 points ago

I imagine it's taken from his home. That means he can be only one man. http://i.imgur.com/NFTuV.jpg

I wouldn't say brilliant. It was my first thought too, and I came to the comments expecting it to be the top comment.

I'm not sure why people upvoted or downvoted this...

This city fascinates me, as much as it terrifies me.

(Born and raised in a small norwegian village)

[–]neurot 18 points19 points ago

it can be overwhelming. but after a while it seems pretty small and quite simple, and not much to it. i mean, one can do nothing and recede into teh shadows, OR, next day go out and do and or see some of the worlds most interesting shit on earth.

[–]DiaperParty 19 points20 points ago

the worlds most interesting shit on earth

[–]anon22_ 4 points5 points ago

Yeah, that bum on 44th makes the awesomest shit sculptures.

[–]Petninja 2 points3 points ago

Oh yeah! If you call him Skipper he'll salute you too!

[–]rjp0008 1 point2 points ago

I just visited and someone shat on the wall of a subway station, no not on the floor, though most of it was on the floor. There was a streak from the point of impact, about waist high, to the pile on the floor. It was pretty impressive.

For anyone living there or visiting it was either the 86th street station on the 1 train, or 125th street on the AB train.

[–]eXX0n 1 point2 points ago

I belive that. I hate cities, but NY is so compelling and mysterious...or something. Fine city anyway!

I actually live in a bigger city now, and have been for about 10 years. Even tho' my city is a little village compared to NY.

[–]R88SHUN 14 points15 points ago

Born and raised in Manhattan, your small Norwegian village is just as scary and interesting to me.

[–]Kadavermarch 5 points6 points ago

I like that.

[–]eXX0n 0 points1 point ago

Seriously? Small villages cant be that scary.

[–]joshuawesomerest 3 points4 points ago

Living in NY and then moving to somewhere relatively small can be unsettling... any random house creaks can and will fuck with you.

[–]devourerkwi 1 point2 points ago

They're too small, too quiet, too sparse. There aren't enough people. There aren't enough lights. Everything is too far away.

Just some of the reasons outer-city suburbs and rural areas make me feel disconcerted.

[–]R88SHUN 1 point2 points ago

Where I live its bright outside 24 hours a day, I have 6 neighbors that live within 20 feet of my front door, There's a supermarket 100 yards from my building, cops, firemen and paramedics 30 seconds away. I have an unlimited supply of hot water and you could flush a beach towel down my toilet. Maybe a small village isn't "scary" but suddenly not having all of that stuff sure is unnerving.

[–]eXX0n 0 points1 point ago

I get you

[–]Petninja 1 point2 points ago

My family often travels from NY to northern New Hampshire (Franconia region). It's pretty rural around there. Almost every day when I walk outside in the morning there is a bear up in a tree or just down the hill or around the back of the house foraging for something. It doesn't really bother us, but you can imagine how that would be a bit unnerving for many people.

[–]blindsighter 17 points18 points ago

Same here. (Polish town). The biggest city I visited was Warsaw and it's gray and boring (WWII and communism will do that to your city). On the bright site, I think that our European cities have a lot more charm and history in them that gigantic American and Asian metropolises. I mean, look at Wroclaw, Krakow, Prague... well pretty much every city that wasn't ruined by the war.

[–]OpenShut 20 points21 points ago

Beijing is 10th century and full of Imperial temples and palaces, Tokyo is 11th century and again is full of history. Not as old as European cities but vastly different and fascinating then take Indian cities which are mostly from before the common era.

The history of these palaces will blow your mind equally with European cities which I do love but bro go there and and try not to be amazed.

[–]blindsighter 9 points10 points ago

I kinda realized that Asian culture is as old as European after I wrote the comment and I'm sorry. I somehow forgot about India, Japan, China, Mongolia, Middle East and all that Asia is. And yeah, I would like to go there someday, when I'm older and ungodly rich.

[–]OpenShut 0 points1 point ago

Seems fair! Europe has a better record and have maintained great cities for an ungodly amount of time like Rome but I think the Middle East has us beat though which are technically mainly in Asia.

[–]RenGader 8 points9 points ago

Beijing and Tokyo are considered "late" by Asian standards. If you want really ancient cities go to Kaifeng, Xian, Suzhou or even Anyang (built in 14th century BC).

[–]3LCapstone 11 points12 points ago

Anyang!

[–]OpenShut 2 points3 points ago

Nice, thanks for information...I was thinking this must be small cities but nope. Anyang is 5 million.

[–]Lightning14 0 points1 point ago

The difference, though, is that there has been a longer history of cultural preservation in European cities than there has been in Asian cities. The giant metropolises have developed with a lot of demolition. Sure there still are cultural sites, but they have become fewer and further between with the large scale development of the late 20th century, and mostly in museums. (Unless you go rural of course.)

[–]daweaver -3 points-2 points ago

The problem with Tokyo is that the United States completely destroyed most of it in World War II.

[–]ThatGuyToYourLeft 2 points3 points ago

I have lived in a small Norwegian village my entire life, but I don't see why people would fear the big cities. I love cities actually.

[–]eXX0n 3 points4 points ago

Too much people in one place. I dont like it.

[–]jimmux 0 points1 point ago

I grew up in small towns and farms most of my life. I always assumed New York would be unpleasant and overwhelming to me until I went there. It's actually more human (in a good way) than we are led to believe. People are everywhere, going about their lives, working, eating, playing in front of you and all around you. It isn't about staying comfortably in your own home, like it is in many other places.

People are also more open and expressive about their feelings and opinions. Believe it or not, I felt a sense of community.

[–]eXX0n 1 point2 points ago

Interesting. I've always had the feeling of discomfort among people, and it's not before I go through my own door I can really feel comfortable.

I guess people in big cities just dont care about making a fool of themselves as we village people are. Once you have made a fool of yourself, everyone knows.

London here. New York is so square and straight, it's fascinating.

Hyde Park for comparison - http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/87/Aerial_view_of_Hyde_Park.jpg/272px-Aerial_view_of_Hyde_Park.jpg

[–]frappy123 44 points45 points ago

New York City was planned, London grew (and continues to grow, if I'm right) organically.

[–]Lolworth 12 points13 points ago

[–]pancakeTRAIN 10 points11 points ago

those streets are retarded

[–]Lolworth 20 points21 points ago

Too late to do anything about it now.

[–]OCDb 5 points6 points ago

Have you ever driven in New York? It doesn't matter how straight the layout of the streets is, it's pure fucking anarchy.

[–]JoeyCalamaro 2 points3 points ago

I've driven in and out of Manhattan plenty of times and outside of the Lincoln tunnel (I hate merging there) and parallel parking, I really don't mind driving around the city.

Yes, the cab drivers tend to be insane and passing can be problematic with that much congestion, but it's not nearly as bad as some people make it out to be. At least the traffic is moving in a single direction and everything is nice and organized. That's more than I can say about Philly or Boston.

[–]Bubuloo 4 points5 points ago

Most old streets are! The Old Town in Edinburgh is the stupidest layout possible..

[–]ishbuggy 0 points1 point ago

But it has layers!

[–]mydadsarse 0 points1 point ago

Agreed, the old town is like an Escher painting around the Cowgate and Grassmarket , still love the place though.

[–]anarchistica 4 points5 points ago

It takes after the "original":

Amsterdam (centre)

Nieuw Amsterdam (Manhattan)

[–]SamuraiSevens 1 point2 points ago

no teeth jokes yet?

[–]Lolworth 4 points5 points ago

All the NY buildings are bleached white too eh?

[–]Tom5ervo 0 points1 point ago

Europe in general is a but more winding than most US cities. Older cities retained a lot of the older street layouts than US ones.

[–]MrHappyOne 4 points5 points ago

That's beautiful. Where was that photograph taken?

[–]Ninogan 2 points3 points ago

Looks a lot like Stockholm, Sweden but it isn't... I don't think.

[–]Asystole 0 points1 point ago

I wanted to know too, so I tineye'd it. It's Edinburgh, Scotland. It's the fourth picture in this set.

[–]Petninja 1 point2 points ago

Scotland is nice!

[–]shpong1ed 0 points1 point ago

Wow. No. Still cool though.

[–]Bubuloo 1 point2 points ago

But.. It has a castle :(

[–]Elefane 6 points7 points ago

whats that big building on the left side of the picture thats pushing into central park?

[–]DevinDoesIt 6 points7 points ago

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points ago

thats not your view is it?

[–]Jim808 33 points34 points ago

No, definitely not. This was taken from a helicopter hovering above Harlem. There aren't any building up there tall enough for this shot.

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points ago

now that i look at the angle i see how dumb of a question that was

[–]Forkler 3 points4 points ago

He lives in a helicopter?!?

[–]Tom5ervo 1 point2 points ago

Took me a second to orient, I just kind of giggled because my first thought was that is a sick high rise. Second thought was immediately: No highrise, and in Harlem.

[–]jokkephar -1 points0 points ago

Couldn't it be rockefeller center?

[–]onlyhalfminotaur 0 points1 point ago

Maybe with a nice zoom, but I don't think the shot would be that high.

[–]Ron_Pauls_Balls 0 points1 point ago

No Rockefeller is south of the park

[–]Jim808 0 points1 point ago

No. Rockefeller Center is in midtown (downtown of Central Park). This picture is taken from way, way uptown, past the park.

[–]Jigsus 3 points4 points ago

If it is OP is stinking rich.

[–]drquibley 2 points3 points ago

He must have a deep wallet to live here.

[–]aztektum 8 points9 points ago

Maybe s/he is a bird?

[–]LumpenBourgeoise 3 points4 points ago

I think he/she means that they live IN central park...

[–]BaronVonBondage 0 points1 point ago

Nah, I've had this wallpaper for months, and now I'm slightly bitter someone's just uploaded it to huge acclaim :(

[–]CodeGirlUK 12 points13 points ago

It's so... square.

[–]Simbrian 66 points67 points ago

Rectangular. Get your shit straight.

[–]CodeGirlUK 13 points14 points ago

I know it's 'rectangular', but I felt that 'rectangular' wouldn't have got across just how alien the straight edges felt to me.

[–]chili_cheese_dog 8 points9 points ago

That's an obtuse way, to think about it.

[–]Kornstalx 7 points8 points ago

Not to go off on a tangent, but that comma is unnecessary.

[–]CodeGirlUK 6 points7 points ago

That's an acute observation.

[–]Celebrimbor333 8 points9 points ago

I made this for you mainly because it's a good picture, plus I wanted to try out the new Photoshop technique I learned. Enjoy.

[–]darkreality20 4 points5 points ago

Love this wallpaper. Thanks!

I just visited New York City for the first time last week. It was a blast. Went to Central Park to see the Bethesda fountain (our New Yorker friend who was acting as tour guide said it was in GTA 3 and always wanted to see it). Came out, looked at a map, and saw just how little of Central Park we actually explored. It would take a day to experience the whole park. Maybe more. Great place, though. Probably my favorite part of the trip. That, and the chicken/rice cart on the SW corner of 53rd and 6th after 8pm. My friend says it's the best food in the continental US. I disagree (sorry dude!) but for six bucks for about a pound of food, it was a great value, and it was pretty damn good.

[–]deadymcstevejobs 1 point2 points ago

One of my friends made me walk all the way to that cart from the Brooklyn Bridge at 4 AM the other day. It wasn't even open when we got there at 7 so we all slept on a rock in central park until they got there. We didn't find it to be anything special either (I normally go to a much better one off Union Turnpike in Queens) and many impulses for murder were had.

[–]darkreality20 0 points1 point ago

Wow, sorry to hear that.

I think I can make the chicken and rice better, and will attempt to do so tonight. The thing that makes 53rd and 6th so special is the sauce. The rice is just spanish rice, and the chicken is most likely mostly dark meat, so it's cheap stuff. The pita and lettuce are just window dressing.

Not trying to convince anybody, just myself.

What I'm doing, is I'm going to bake 1.5 pounds of boneless/skinless chicken breasts in a spicy marinade I whipped up myself that they've been soaking in for a few hours (and will continue to do so for a few more), and chop them up and sear them with some smoked sausage I got. I'll chop that up too. I'm making a family size box each of Zatarain's Red Beans and Rice and Zatarain's Jambalaya, with a can of chili ready diced tomatoes. My wife even bought some shredded lettuce and pita bread. So what we're gonna do is, throw some rice (with beans and tomatoes) in a bowl, throw some chicken/sausage on it, a little bit of shredded lettuce, a couple wedges of pita bread, and we're gonna pour the 53rd/6th white sauce on it. It's gonna be epic. And I think it will taste better. Better meat, better rice, same sauce. I want to reproduce their sauce, but I'm not sure where to start.

[–]SnakesTancredi 2 points3 points ago

Thank you for posting this. As a New York/New Jersey native that is away from home it makes me very happy to be able to just look at my wallpaper and think of home. Seriously I really enjoyed this posting.

[–]SpaceToad 2 points3 points ago

All I can think about is simcity.

[–]paulogabriel 2 points3 points ago

Wait, where's the amber?

[–]robalexander 2 points3 points ago

There is a moment of sheer panic...when I realize that Paul's apartment overlooks the park...and is obviously more expensive than mine. I calm myself and move into the bedroom, where I find his suitcase and start to pack.

[–]shloimtotheE 2 points3 points ago

It doesn't look like that from my window.. Then again, I'm in Brooklyn, and there's a homeless guy pissing against the wall..

[–]Jessicaquinn 1 point2 points ago

I consider you to be a very lucky man/woman. I've wanted to go to New York my whole life.

[–]shook_one 0 points1 point ago

it looks great from an aerial view. from the ground its not that great

[–]Jessicaquinn 3 points4 points ago

I hope to visit one day. It's been a huge dream of mine for a very long time.

[–]neurot 4 points5 points ago

this.

theres basically just pockets of greatness all over. but overall its not much .

[–]inigoesdr 2 points3 points ago

What are the good pockets? What should one visit on a trip to NYC?

[–]Petninja 1 point2 points ago

Museum of Natural History, but make sure you take the whole day for it. You could probably take a week for it and still not take it all in. Avoid Times Square like the plague. Fucking souless hellhole. It's tourists all the way down! Actually, after 2AM Times Square is pretty vacant so it's kind of fun to wander around there after the crowds are gone. Such a huge contrast to what it is during the day. Almost feels like you survived something big. Avoid central park at night.

[–]neurot 0 points1 point ago

Its mostly personal. People have their little areas they like to circle mostly. I havent lived there in some time, ive been in NJ, so its hard to say. There are a lot of pockets in Brooklyn. Its basically become one big little pocket of fun.
