This thread is gold Like the sun

[–]larkable 64 points65 points ago

Actually, the Sun is white.

EDIT: Wait, I'm confused. Is the Sun white, green, or very slightly yellow?

I don't want to correct someone, but be wrong. Can someone verify the color of the Sun for me?

[–]ShakeweightPro 115 points116 points ago

FINE. This thread appears to be of a golden hue, due to light reflection from the atmosphere and the way humans perceive light.

Are you happy now?

[–]armander 25 points26 points ago

TIL

[–]littlesunsegrije 6 points7 points ago

Actually, I think you'll find it's a green star... thanks to Dr Karl for this information on the radio recently :). Love that guy!

[–]Deluxe754 30 points31 points ago

I'm pretty sure its a yellow star. Mainly because its a average main sequence star and they are yellow.

[–]Aederrex 43 points44 points ago

That only means that its emissions are strongest in that color band. It appears yellow on earth because of atmospheric scattering. In space, it's white, as is pretty much every other star except some very cold (relatively) dwarfs and red giants. Black body radiation; hot as fuck = white as fuck.

[–]Socky_McPuppet 10 points11 points ago

Yeah … however there's also a psychological effect whereby the human vision system basically perceives the brightest thing in any given scene as "white"; that why we don't generally have a problem recognizing something as being the same color when we perceive it under different kinds of "white" light, e.g. fluorescent, incandescent, or sunlight. We basically have auto white-balance.

[–]Omenege 32 points33 points ago

Well that and Superman.

[–]greendt 10 points11 points ago

Challenge accepted: Answer

The atmosphere makes things look different

[–]KorovaDroog 5 points6 points ago

My teacher told our class the sun was green.

Edit: Well whatever color the sun really is, I'm just glad it's not red.

[–]littlesparkvt 2 points3 points ago

The Sun's stellar classification, based on spectral class, is G2V, and is informally designated as a yellow dwarf, because its visible radiation is most intense in the yellow-green portion of the spectrum and although its color is white, from the surface of the Earth it may appear yellow because of atmospheric scattering of blue light.

[–]USADV 17 points18 points ago

I hear the Sun might be a star. Anyone that can confirm?

EDIT: No one appreciates sarcasm?

[–]Swazzoo 8 points9 points ago

I know him and can confirm this.

[–]jvalordv 129 points130 points ago

What always angers me about these things is a lack of response by the OP to the facebook status. I would feel nothing short of a moral obligation to point out to this person how and why he/she is an idiot.

[–]PerfectlyOffensive 22 points23 points ago

Then everyone would call OP an asshole for calling them out.

[–]USADV 28 points29 points ago

Worth it.

[–]Teflon_McDermit 10 points11 points ago

I really wouldn't have a problem being that asshole. Someone has to do it, and I'm willing to be that bad guy.

[–]Handyland 124 points125 points ago

You must be new around here, so I'll give you some advice:

Trying to correct idiots is a waste of time.

Edit: To clarify, 'here' means Earth.

[–]NecroParade 93 points94 points ago

To clarify, 'here' means Earth.

You know, I met a couple of nerds who thought that place was a planet.

[–]BlondeGhandi 34 points35 points ago

at least we all know that Boys go to Jupiter to get more stupider, Girls go to mars to get more candy bars. As long as we retain this information as a species, there is still hope for humanity.

[–]jvalordv 19 points20 points ago

Maybe, but I feel that by not saying anything, this person's beliefs are going to be reinforced. It will be harder to convince the person differently in the future. Better to at least just post a link to Wikipedia's "Sun" page without saying anything more, than to do nothing at all. Plus, it would be pretty satisfying.

[–]3dmonkeyarray 5 points6 points ago

Too much reading required, not enough pictures.

[–]winlu 21 points22 points ago

but it gives so much satisfaction to point out other peoples silliness on the interwebs

[–]flcnpwnch 19 points20 points ago

it gives so much satisfaction to point out other peoples silliness on the interwebs

other peoples'. Ah.. so satisfying...

[–]RockLoi 4 points5 points ago

Isn't that people's? Unless you're pointing out the silliness of other peoples (other races etc)?

[–]Bubonic_Ferret 38 points39 points ago

OP would never respond to that status because it would require interacting with a female.

[–]arabjuice 24 points25 points ago

Who said it was a female?

[–]myusernamestaken 12 points13 points ago

Despite our tendency to get wrapped up in this politically correct bullshit, it's pretty obvious it's a female. You can tell by the way it's written.

[–]kinnu 4 points5 points ago

If he writes an informative reply there is no /r/funny post. If he writes something funny he looks like an attention whore ("OMG LOOK GYEUS, I'M SO WITTY") and probably insults a friend.

[–]AngusYoung93 1 point2 points ago

I prefer this over a response from OP (posted a few seconds ago).

[–]leftunderground 9 points10 points ago

Psst... It's fake

[–]darklink37 18 points19 points ago

Really? What makes me angry about these posts is that they are obviously fake, yet /r/funny eats them up every time.

[–]-pawky- 24 points25 points ago

What makes this one obviously fake?

Gotta tell you, I've heard so stupid things said IRL that I get warlike flashbacks sometimes. Can't sleep.

http://i.imgur.com/gMoqE.gif

[–]zinx90 30 points31 points ago

What about this makes it "obviously" fake? You don't think there are people stupid enough to think and post this? Maybe it is fake but the assumption that all facebook posts are fake just because they're facebook posts is starting to get annoying

[–]drketchup 2 points3 points ago

Because it never happened.

It's from a 1903 french sci-fi short film, one of the first films to have narrative, and Edison stole it and made millions off it.

[–]Solid364 14 points15 points ago

Yes, Edison's was a world class dick

[–]Dr_Funkenstein_ 9 points10 points ago

We should credit Tesla over Edison. He was a genius.

[–]jconnor592 2 points3 points ago

SO BRAVE

[–]Bandit1379 5 points6 points ago

Stop degrading Tesla with this shitty overused comment or I'll come back from the future and kill you with my invincible metal body.

[–]E2M8 8 points9 points ago

[–]jackthedog 12 points13 points ago

Would you eat the moon if it was made out of ribs. It's a simple question doctor.

[–]Dr_Funkenstein_ 5 points6 points ago

Just say yes, and we'll move on.

[–]arabjuice 26 points27 points ago

You're the 7th person in this thread to assume it is a female. interesting

[–]ZombeeAndroid 13 points14 points ago

Women are far more likely to put emphasis on adverbs when they speak.

You are so stupid.

as opposed to:

You are so stupid.

That at least, is the reasoning why I believe it was a female typing this. Assuming this isn't fake.

[–]scy1192 17 points18 points ago

I have never once seen a guy legitimately type like that. (qualifier used to prevent predictable smartass from replying to me like that)

[–]ShitsandGigs 3 points4 points ago

[–]GrooveArmada 11 points12 points ago

It's almost like the voice implied through that text sounds like a young girl! Intriguing!

[–]DrunkmanDoodoo 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I read that facebook post as female from the first line.

[–]Dsch1ngh1s_Khan 4 points5 points ago

i swear some peeple r so stupid! i was on the train and 2 nerds thought the moon was made of rock and not cheez! it actually makes me sad :(

[–]NeuVoice 5 points6 points ago

Wensleydale, IIRC...

[–]willworkforicecream 2 points3 points ago

That vending machine gave me nightmares.

[–]injekted 142 points143 points ago

It would blow her mind to learn the moon is a satellite.

[–]kometes 105 points106 points ago

so is the Earth

[–]Axeman20 83 points84 points ago

So is the Sun

[–]forgotmyoldpassword2 35 points36 points ago

Is it really? of what?

[–]OPGreenback 121 points122 points ago

The black hole in the center of our galaxy.

[–]Calypso6917 53 points54 points ago

Yes. Then, the Milky Way galaxy is orbiting around a cluster of other galaxies. Our galaxy is actually traveling around 1.3 million miles per hour.

[–]needlestack 14 points15 points ago

Compared to what? I imagine it's traveling much faster and much slower than that depending on your frame of reference.

[–]Lowbacca1977 29 points30 points ago

If you look at the cosmic microwave background radiation (which is a sphere around us), you can tell which way we're moving because it's blueshifted in one spot, and redshifted in the opposite direction.

[–]darthvalium 0 points1 point ago

Which is also why, from a certain point of view, the sun orbits earth (in funny paths).

[–]Roth1 2 points3 points ago

Relative to what though? I could say we're moving at 1 mph less than the speed of light and still technically be correct.

[–]heimlich1017 7 points8 points ago

Just a guess, but probably relative to the barycenter of the galaxy cluster. The same way we say the earth is moving at whatever speed, and we mean that relative to the sun.

[–]epichigh 11 points12 points ago

relative to the center of the milky way's orbit I would assume

[–]Axeman20 12 points13 points ago

The sun could be considered one of a few hundred billion satellites in our galaxy, since our galaxy orbits other galaxies in the local group.

[–]Kamikasi 2 points3 points ago

[–]wolfvision 8 points9 points ago

[–]ForgettableUsername 30 points31 points ago

[–]friendlymaniac 7 points8 points ago

The Bastards

[–]Okuhou 47 points48 points ago

Please tell me you corrected that person...

[–]wolfvision 21 points22 points ago

They're too far gone to be corrected. That kind of stupid cannot be revived

[–]-pawky- 17 points18 points ago

Terminal stupidity.

"Terminal stupidity is a medical term popularized in the 20th century to describe a level of intelligence so low that it cannot be cured or adequately treated and is reasonably expected to result in the death of the patient within a reasonably short period of time. This term is more commonly used for progressive idiocy such as christianity or advanced 9gaggery than for acute silliness caused be intoxication. In popular use, it indicates a moronity which will eventually end the life of the sufferer in a pitiful yet funny way."

[–]Dryesias 16 points17 points ago

What the fuck was he even aiming for? I expected him to miss a pool or something when I saw him leaping... but what the fuck, there was nothing there.

[–]LeCrushinator 28 points29 points ago

And that the correction was physically painful for them.

[–]laserbeanz 0 points1 point ago

Why is this so far down? This person needs to know that she is the stupid one.

[–]Lord_Bumberchute 153 points154 points ago

That poor person, having to be sad like that.

Maybe someone should put them out of their misery.

[–]USADV 32 points33 points ago

Maybe we can contact Darwin. I hear he's good for jobs like this.

[–]unwanted_puppy 19 points20 points ago

[–]obsydianx 11 points12 points ago

As someone who lives in the Bible belt, I think you're horribly misjudging the whole area.

[–]MrWindrammer 2 points3 points ago

What's a Bible Belt? Is it like an Asteroid Belt, but made of Bibles? So Bibles came to earth riding on a passing comet? Thanks, I get it all now.

[–]ontheprowl 68 points69 points ago

I wish I had friends like these for instant karma.

[–]variousfruits 33 points34 points ago

This is the only reason I go on facebook anymore, to look for idiots.

[–]ninjadudenitro 48 points49 points ago

At least you're honest.

[–]Audioworm 137 points138 points ago

This makes me sad. Firstly as an Astrophysicist, and secondly as a human :(

[–]tuckidge 57 points58 points ago

There's only like 300 of you. Is that you, Neil?

[–]terref 64 points65 points ago

Woah, I'm a physicist who also does astro... And my name's Neil...

[–]wolfvision 30 points31 points ago

You might wanna show some sort of proof, if Karmanaut sees this he will not be amused

[–]uniquecannon 10 points11 points ago

I don`t get this, I guess I should have been there.

[–]randomsnark 9 points10 points ago

[–]Kaissy 6 points7 points ago

[–]3dmonkeyarray 6 points7 points ago

[–]furyfight 11 points12 points ago

"No need for any other options?" "Nope"

[–]mountainfail 12 points13 points ago

Oddly enough I assumed it was a girl too, but your post made me double check. It doesn't say it was...

[–]sickmate 12 points13 points ago

I don't know many guys who would use so many o's and get sad from misreading a conversation.

No offense, ladies.

[–]Lineli 43 points44 points ago

Was in class at one point and had the teacher refer to the sun as, "Everyone's favorite Star!"

Queue person next to be saying, "Nope, Jupiter is my favorite star."

[–]Shoola 42 points43 points ago

Wouldn't it be "cue" in this case? The person would be taking a cue to say something like a line in a play.

[–]Delvil 24 points25 points ago

Yes. Good job not being a dildo.

I am an old grammar/spelling/vocabulary Nazi, and because it has been a while since my younger days on the newborn internet, I am growing weary. I no longer correct anyone...my only part to play is that of the melancholic observer, sitting quietly with a smile as the new generation of smartasses find their footing.

[–]pfafulous 5 points6 points ago

Brethren!

[–]deathonater 45 points46 points ago

Fun fact #12,167: Jupiter has an atomic composition comparable to that of the Sun and radiates twice as much heat as it receives from the Sun. The only reason it's not a star is its mass is about 60 times smaller than what's needed for gravitational collapse and thermonuclear fusion.

[–]perseus13 37 points38 points ago

Still not a star.

[–]Rainbow_Farter 18 points19 points ago

you are both correct, Jupiter is a failed star

[–]dev3d 6 points7 points ago

By that definition, everything with mass that isn't a star is a failed star - it failed to get enough density

[–]poizan42 2 points3 points ago

TIL I'm a failed star :(

[–]braised_diaper_shit 5 points6 points ago

Question: how do we know the mass of Jupiter? Simply by knowing its size and molecular composition?

[–]Kikaider01 24 points25 points ago

Orbital periods of its moons.

[–]silenc3x 9 points10 points ago

The most commonly used technique for determining the mass of an object is to use Kepler's Third Law of planetary motion. According to this rule, an object of mass m in orbit about a larger body of mass M will obey the relation

Finding the mass of jupiter

[–]HTMC 5 points6 points ago

Sorry to be that guy, but for your future reference, *cue

[–]jp_lolo 4 points5 points ago

this makes me want to hurl. not only are there tons of idiots out there, but they brag about it too?

[–]SHITTY_COMIC_STRIP 222 points223 points ago

[–]Sheepinator 154 points155 points ago

I'll give you an upvote purely cause you lived up to your name, it was pretty shitty.

[–]imaginative_username 8 points9 points ago

None of the original choices are right either, our sun is a G-type main-sequence star or yellow dwarf. White dwarf is still infinitely closer than "None of the above" though.

[–]whitefoot 2 points3 points ago

Main sequence was one of the options. Is that not technically correct?

[–]LibraryRulesRule 40 points41 points ago

Not quite the same as Shitty Watercolors....

[–]FAP_IN_MY_BUTT 9 points10 points ago

This shit's getting old..

[–]CelestialBrony 134 points135 points ago

I'd say the same about the insanely inappropriate usernames in order to be remembered by people, but hey.

[–]GreatLookingGuy 46 points47 points ago

At this point, because there's so many of them, all of these "I_RAPE_FAPPING_CUNTS" usernames just blend together for me so it's pretty rare for me to remember any particular one.

[–]CelestialBrony 36 points37 points ago

The only one I actually remember is "POTATO_IN_MY_ANUS", because that user practically introduced the concept.

Unless there are influential accounts around that are older than that one. Feel free to correct me.

[–]ssnseawolf 20 points21 points ago

I_RAPE_CATS. Oh, the drama!

[–]Ich_rauche_Gras 28 points29 points ago

I remember seeing I_RAPE_CATS and LORDJEW_VAN_CUNTFUCK a bit before.

[–]Gman1012 3 points4 points ago

They were the original three.

[–]Fumidor 0 points1 point ago

I think it's the ennuie of the Internet. I look at all the gore and nsfw stuff amd am just non-plused. Or the people who apparently are constantly spraying their computer screens every time there is a funny on the Internet. Oh, a clever witticism from mother_rapist_dog_meat_fucker_69_69? Yawn.

[–]Bizarre-Non-Sequitur 2 points3 points ago

The square root of pie is flour.

[–]ademu5 1 point2 points ago

French words?

[–]spindragger 6 points7 points ago

op could be from quebec.

[–]howdareyoutakemyname 16 points17 points ago

Or France...

[–]khanfusion 4 points5 points ago

And you didn't correct this person?

[–]BattleClown 6 points7 points ago

Obviously it's not a star... it's a planet.

/s

[–]Chrischn89 3 points4 points ago

So... can we go there? Ofc we would go during winter or else we'd burn our feet... I'm not dumb!

[–]fishgats 27 points28 points ago

Call me suspicious, but judging by the 4 minutes that went by after this comment was posted and before the screenshot was taken, I say OP wrote this comment as a joke.

[–]The_Adventurist 20 points21 points ago

I also don't think it's real. It sounds like a really obvious troll. Maybe I should head down to /r/karmaconspiracy with this one.

[–]Zukas 4 points5 points ago

Don't know why you're being downvoted. This was my first thought as well, especially since there was just a post about people thinking the sun is not a star just yesterday, and then this pops up?

4 minutes is such a small time frame for the text to get posted, read, thought about, and then finally screenshot.

[–]Rainbow_Farter 4 points5 points ago

you know some redditors do talk to people on facebook

[–]mask2697 5 points6 points ago

The last time I tried joining facebook I broke my nose...

[–]berriesthatburn 2 points3 points ago

it takes you more than a few seconds to see the joke in that post? say you were looking at the feed at the time something was posted, are you gonna wait hours to take a screen shot of something worth just a few seconds of amusement?

[–]2-long-didnt-reddit 3 points4 points ago

Facebook needs an "unfriend because of this" button on every post so you can let people know what they've done.

[–]HowsItBeenBen 3 points4 points ago

The problem with stupid people, is that they think smart people are idiots.

[–]KevYuuuu 13 points14 points ago

I want to punch him/her. Please. Let me at'em.

[–]ANGRY_TORTOISE 3 points4 points ago

He/she is mistaken about some basic knowledge of astronomy?! That's a punching. People who don't know all the things that I know literally deserve to be beaten.

[–]floppy115 7 points8 points ago

that's just counter productive. give them a textbook. we have to be the change we seek. :)

[–]neo1513 26 points27 points ago

Good thinking, textbooks are heavier than fists

[–]bodmon 6 points7 points ago

Why the fuck didn't you say anything OP?

[–]marc24 2 points3 points ago

Because then the OP would need 2 Facebook accounts.

[–]Oohoa 3 points4 points ago

She obviously zoned out the entire science period

[–]HelpMeImmigrate 0 points1 point ago

I laughed.

[–]reddit_recruiter 2 points3 points ago

Past updates include something about the God particle proving God exists, eating at Chick-fil-a and Atheists and Scientologists are the same thing.

[–]ps7825 2 points3 points ago

This status gave me cancer...

[–]Nokind 2 points3 points ago

You see that? That`s my IQ flying out the window.

[–]LowCarbs 4 points5 points ago

bullshit fake post/10

[–]scrumbly 6 points7 points ago

Please. This is obviously fake. Let's break it down.

  • Someone stupid enough to not know that the sun is a star isn't going to be tuning in to this alleged conversation about the sun being a star, let alone posting it on FB as a highlight of their train ride.

  • And about this conversation, how exactly did that go? "Hey fellow nerd, how about that sun overhead? It sure is a bright staaaaar." "I know, right? That star, I mean the sun, is really bright indeed."

  • And about these two "nerds". Clearly this was added to heighten the implied stupidity of the post author. To suggest she was thinking, "Ooh, those nerds, always thinking they're so smart when they don't even know the difference between a sun and a star. I'm not book smart but I'm street smart!"

  • Lastly, the image shows the French localized FB page. It's as well known as the fact that the sun is a star that the French have a rich history of comedy and a love of mimes. Clearly this is just another of their nation's great jokes.

[minor formatting edits]

[–]lillesvin 4 points5 points ago

Not saying that it isn't fake, but you're making a LOT of assumptions. People talk about the weirdest shit all the time and there are a million scenarios where people could be talking normally and casually (maybe indirectly) mentioning that the sun is a star.

Just yesterday I was walking down the street telling my gf how I didn't understand how photons (which are massless) fit into E = mc2 because obviously E = 0c2 = 0, so photons don't appear to be able to store energy because of their zero-mass. (I still don't get it, so if anyone has a link to an explanation please do share.)

As for a tuning into a conversation, it's not really that simple. If this person has always been convinced that the sun is not a star and hears someone say that it is, that's really all it takes. You don't have to tune in, you just have to hear "bla bla the Sun is the closest star bla bla".

Edit: Wording.

m is the relativistic mass, not the rest mass. The relativistic mass of a photon is not zero, but is given by m=E/c2 whereas the rest mass, m0 is the mass of the photon in its inertial frame of rest, which is indeed zero. For massive particles, the two masses are related by m=m0/(1-v2 /c2 )1/2 .

Edit: This Wikipedia page has some info. Note, in their notation, m is the rest mass.

You're mistaken about an admittedly basic piece of information about astronomy? Rather than wanting to educate you, I wish you would literally die. Only intelligent, educated and sociopathic individuals like myself should be allowed to live on this planet.

That is so stupid, I'm about to cry.

[–]scBaldwin 1 point2 points ago

You would think that someone trying to call people stupid would at least have the respect to spell the insult correctly.

Thanks for not showing anything interesting, such as proving her wrong and making her look even more stupid.

And you still have not.
