Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

TIL: Mars is not red, it's atmosphere just got instagramed.

[–]fitzydog 228 points229 points ago

Here, I touched it up a bit for you.

[–]thebretandbutter 43 points44 points ago

Oswyn??

[–]fitzydog 8 points9 points ago

Who?

[–]kealiee 19 points20 points ago

Doctor, that is.

[–]fuckingcaptcha 49 points50 points ago

More grunge filter lens flares, and skinny jeans. Ironic photo of Converses optional.

[–]FlyingPasta 28 points29 points ago

Ducky face. I want to see ducky face on the Mars rover.

Please.

[–]Izicata 42 points43 points ago

[–]Bobsmit 38 points39 points ago

Billions of dollars spent, nearly a decade of planning, design, construction and testing, the hopes and dreams of an entire planet, launched and landed on the surface of a planet, MILLIONS of miles away.

And we're putting duckfaces on it.

[–]ExplainsYourJoke 19 points20 points ago

You're right.

We should photoshop penises onto it instead.

[–]glaedr 3 points4 points ago

God bless Earthica.

[–]FlyingPasta 16 points17 points ago

[–]DaniL_15 4 points5 points ago

That actually sounds kind of profound.

[–]pnothing 15 points16 points ago

Original was tweeted by Keri Bean at NASA yesterday. https://twitter.com/kerionmars/status/244279485434839041

[–]listentomyfarts 9 points10 points ago

its

[–]JoeyQuoms 184 points185 points ago

It looks...sad...

[–]sudsomatic 252 points253 points ago

You'd be sad if you're all alone millions of miles away left to work until you die.

[–]007T 174 points175 points ago

[–]DollarsThanSense 25 points26 points ago

Is this really what happened to it (minus the emotions)? I mean did it get stuck on that day.

[–]007T 23 points24 points ago

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8481798.stm

Nasa says Spirit, which landed on the Red Planet just over six years ago, will now live out its remaining days as a static science station.

[–]esmortaz 28 points29 points ago

Its remaining days were about a year. NASA/JPL lost communication in May 2010.

[–]wtiger46 42 points43 points ago

They should go find it and take a picture. Fuck that'd be awesome.

[–]Krivvan 14 points15 points ago

They probably will one day. They've taken pictures from orbit of several dead landers such as one of the polar landers.

[–]Hsad 23 points24 points ago

It got stuck in some sand dunes, the new rover will have to skirt around the side of a large sand dune till it hits a break, then it will start to climb the mountain. It will probably take it a bit less than a year to reach the gap.

[–]DollarsThanSense 19 points20 points ago

What is so important about that mountain that they would try again?

[–]Hsad 21 points22 points ago

So one of the Deans of Science at my college is on the advisory board for this mission, and she gave a talk about the plans for the mission. Basically the mountain has visible strata lines (I think that's what their called; sedimentary layers) and this means that they can easily go back in time and look at Mars' geological past. Layers in Mount Sharp

There is also this rock formation where the lines on top are diagonal and the strata below is horizontal, a arrangement opposite from what is commonly found. The black patches are the dreaded sand dunes.

[–]Hsad 6 points7 points ago

Oh, these are different sand dunes from the one that spirit died in. I dont think spirit was anywhere near Gale crater.

[–]kangaimroo 23 points24 points ago

Probably oil.

[–]emelecfan2048 14 points15 points ago

Who's talking 'bout oil? Bitch, you cookin'?

[–]mjbaker474 1 point2 points ago

I got it wrapped up in this special CIA napkin

[–]emelecfan2048 3 points4 points ago

Pray to god you don't drop dat shit.

[–]ChillyWillster 112 points113 points ago

i has a sad now

[–]OneSilentE 49 points50 points ago

Someone edited the text to the style here on reddit, but I've lost the thread

[–]KillaPeas 5 points6 points ago

It's not the same you animal!

[–]WeGotOpportunity 43 points44 points ago

Problem solved (NSFW)

I used that to help me get through Amnesia: TDD

[–]WishIWasKaitlynFaber 13 points14 points ago

NSFW, but you should probably look at it anyways to get through your shitty Saturday shift. It will make you happy in the heart and the pants.

[–]xLuMisx 7 points8 points ago

God daym son. Titties and kitties? Hells yea

[–]kabbinet 7 points8 points ago

D':

Edit: I hope we colonize Mars one day and find our little friend. For Voyager I'm a little more vorried.

[–]NACHOS_4_ALL 4 points5 points ago

This is what I always think of when I imagine Curiosity

[–]PeteSampras 2 points3 points ago

Strong men also cry.

[–]RADIOLARIAN 34 points35 points ago

Looks pretty happy to me. What a trooper! And so dapper.

[–]fuckyourcouchnigger 3 points4 points ago

cannot unsee!

[–]unpopular_speech 20 points21 points ago

Note to NASA: Paint smiley faces on anything that looks remotely head-like.

[–]motionintheocean 19 points20 points ago

He misses Eve

[–]PhreaksChinstrap 5 points6 points ago

Not if you don't look at the top circle as it's eye. Pretend the two squares below are it's eyes and the rectangle in the middle bottom is it's mouth and now he's a grinning nerd just happy to be on mars! With a bitchin hat.

[–]PancakeMonkeypants 2 points3 points ago

This is the top comment? hahaha. We're so insightful.

[–]mtldude1967 88 points89 points ago

I wonder: If they made it look like Wall-E, would Disney have chipped in a few bucks to help pay for the mission?

[–]NeCornilius 50 points51 points ago

I always think of Jonny # 5, which actually just looks like wall-e.. http://www.jeffbots.com/shortcircuit6.jpg

[–]trampus1 49 points50 points ago

Hey now, Wall-E looks like Johnny. He came way before that lil' cartoon robot.

[–]Lampmonster1 9 points10 points ago

But both were awesome, so it's a tribute, not stealing.

[–]unfortunatejordan 2 points3 points ago

According to the DVD special features, it was not noticed until after Wall-E's design was finalised. They claim the original inspiration came from a pair of binocculars, it's possible Johnny #5 was derived from the same thing.

[–]SsquaredplusA 2 points3 points ago

Johnny #5 for sure. "Your mother was a snow blower" - #5.

[–]roentgenatrix 12 points13 points ago

No disassemble!

[–]fuckingcaptcha 6 points7 points ago

IIRC the design for Wall-E is at least partly based on J5.

[–]QTFsniper 2 points3 points ago

oh my God.Ray.is that you?!

[–]NeCornilius 2 points3 points ago

Trieeeeet

[–]QTFsniper 2 points3 points ago

only one man has that handle.i knew it

[–]I-am_Batman 28 points29 points ago

what if they asked Red Bull to sponser it..i mean i know it will look funny with all advertisements of Mc Donalds or Coca Cola..but wouldn't these companies go and spent millions to be the first companies being advertised in space...!

[–]I_Am_Crake 46 points47 points ago

It would also make NASA look ridiculous.

[–]UserNumber42 52 points53 points ago

If it meant a bigger NASA budget I wouldn't care if there was a Red Bull logo on the side of our rockets.

[–]Xenopus_laevis 29 points30 points ago

It would be cost ineffective to paint shit on the side of our rockets. That much paint adds weight to the payload, and therefore increases your fuel costs. NASA had the big rust colored fuel tank of the space shuttle painted for about the first 4 shuttle missions. When they switched to the non-painted one it decreased the whole weight of the payload by 600 pounds. Depending on the type of rocket you use, it can cost $10,000 per pound or more to send a payload into space.

[–]bdog2g2 18 points19 points ago

While I completely agree with your statement and I'm glad that you brought up the fact that the main fuel tank on the shuttles used to be painted, I just wanted to note a (as in one) logo on the side of a rocket would generate more revenue than it would cost.

That being said, I do not think NASA should get in the business of sponsored launches. I don't see it ending well.

[–]clemsonfan1 9 points10 points ago

[–]REDDIT- 17 points18 points ago

Mr. Rawlings said Pizza Hut marketers first considered trying to put the image of the updated logo -- the company's name beneath a red roof -- on the moon with lasers.

ಠ_ಠ

[–]esmortaz 9 points10 points ago

I think a lot of scientist I know would look ridiculous to be well funded.

[–]SystemOutPrintln 1 point2 points ago

[–]Dave_Hulud 11 points12 points ago

Directive?

[–]rohr0hroh 15 points16 points ago

Eeeeeeevaaaaah

[–]GilmerInSpace 5 points6 points ago

NASA can't have corporations putting pressure on them to try and speed up a mission or do it their way and then mess something up.

[–]barium111 4 points5 points ago

I think its against international law to put advertisement in space.

[–]Sidoth 71 points72 points ago

This is the first pic from mars that really hit me.

Seeing something that we made on it had a much bigger impact on me then all the pictures of its surroundings

[–]ThatJesterJeff 43 points44 points ago

I suggest you check out this 3D panorama of mars:
http://www.360cities.net/image/curiosity-rover-martian-solar-day-2
Put it in fullscreen mode and take in the vast wonders of a place over 35 million miles away - utterly surreal.

[–]KyoTe44 13 points14 points ago

I found myself panning down and looking at the rover...Quite the marvel if you ask me.

[–]jjgarcia87 23 points24 points ago

I don't know why but this brought tears to my eyes. We're reaching out. Humanity is searching through the universe for new places we could call home. It is like we're children just realizing that at some point we'll have to walk out the door and find place different than anything we knew before to call home. And we're looking.

[–]NinjaNexus 4 points5 points ago

But as always, lets clean up our home before we dirty up another one.

[–]telfman123 2 points3 points ago

[–]fairypuff 4 points5 points ago

The most surreal part for me is the sun. Something that we all see everyday from a new perspective.

[–]Boxekox 18 points19 points ago

Selfies!

[–]mmmjon 16 points17 points ago

Now it just needs to find a mirror for its Myspace profile pic.

[–]pourpiednoir 2 points3 points ago

totally a myspace angle.

[–]Iamgoingtooffendyou 15 points16 points ago

Number five, Is alive!

[–]Postlurkial_times 136 points137 points ago

[–]shorty6049 57 points58 points ago

[–]spacelover89 6 points7 points ago

wall-e?

[–]orzamil 12 points13 points ago

That should be a duck face. Then again, I'd guess Curiosity would be a much classier lady.

[–]MrxPeaches 9 points10 points ago

Its almost like the curiosity has feelings, must be so lonely :(

[–]Coffee10707 8 points9 points ago

You all believe Curiosity took the picture himself and didn't ask someone walking by to snap a quick picture of him in front of Mars to send back to his family on Earth?

[–]NoFucksGiven00 18 points19 points ago

Why would this be difficult?

[–]relativelyprime 9 points10 points ago

Most girls miss their faces, get too much boob. One of those good kinds of problems..

[–]Libertarian-Centrist 2 points3 points ago

Because the OP wanted the link to have a title which would result in him getting more karma.

[–]sbarias20 20 points21 points ago

So this is NSWF porn today? Your call, OP.

[–]WitchHunterNL 13 points14 points ago

Not suitable wor fork?

[–]Osiris32 8 points9 points ago

Non-safe War Fork!! Our new weapon in the global fight against terror.

[–]zbreeze3 11 points12 points ago

my'space'!!!

[–]piss_connoisseur 27 points28 points ago

Anyone who's taken his or her own picture for a Facebook profile page will know how tricky it is to do what NASA's Curiosity rover just did: It turned one of its 17 cameras around on itself and took a snapshot of its very own "face on Mars."

What the actual fuck did I just read?

[–]velocity219e 2 points3 points ago

cmon, how easy do you find it to hold seventeen cameras and then take a snapshot of your own face while on mars?

it takes some planning.

[–]forkandspoon2011 5 points6 points ago

TIL Johny Five works for NASA now and is currently on Mars.

[–]Stephen_Fapking 17 points18 points ago

Is it making the duck face?

[–]That_steam_guy 10 points11 points ago

All it needs now is an "UGLY ):" album to put it in.

[–]Bri_jr 4 points5 points ago

I went on a date with the curiosity rover and let me tell you, it really knows how to take a flattering picture that hides how fat it really is. 3/10, would not bang.

[–]That_steam_guy 3 points4 points ago

Curiosity never called me back.

[–]stickowe 14 points15 points ago

Hipster Curiosity using Instagram.

[–]FoxBattalion79 4 points5 points ago

looks like it instagramed itself too. oh the humanity

[–]bheklilr 4 points5 points ago

I'm going to hazard a guess and say that it was far more difficult for Curiosity to take a picture of itself than for your average 13 year old to hold a phone backwards.

[–]UghImRegistered 3 points4 points ago

I completely disagree. Curiosity has perfect spatial awareness of itself. It doesn't need to look through a viewfinder, it computes where it needs to position the camera, and then it takes the picture.

Not sure what everybody thinks is difficult about this, compared to literally anything else Curiosity has done to date.

[–]Abscheu 4 points5 points ago

"Number Five... IS ON FUCKING MARS, BITCHES!"

[–]723723 9 points10 points ago

How does curiosity keep his camera lens clean?

[–]JaneRenee 8 points9 points ago

They mention dust caps, but how do those stay clean? :/

[–]combatdave 8 points9 points ago

The dust caps have dust caps, but I'm not sure how those stay clean.

[–]realblade 3 points4 points ago

I'm GUESSING it's not windy 24/7, and when it detects dust the covers pop up, keeping the lens clean. It doesn't matter if the covers are dirty.

[–]Mdaishi 3 points4 points ago

It's dust caps, all the way down!

[–]SaturnSucksBalls 6 points7 points ago

I believe there's a vibration mechanism that shakes the dust free.

[–]mccaddensa16 15 points16 points ago

Oh, sure. That's all it's used for.

[–]odd84 2 points3 points ago

They have dust covers which can be opened and closed.

[–]imsabbel 2 points3 points ago

IIRC, they point cameras down when not in use.

[–]peaceisoverrated 2 points3 points ago

It uses a blast of compressed gas to blow off debris.

[–]seymour47 4 points5 points ago

The corners on the top of the mast cam look vaguely like an iPhone. I think Apple should sue.

[–]TheGuy4000 4 points5 points ago

Gets sent to mars for million dollar research project.

Takes myspace pictures.

[–]saysomethingdumb 4 points5 points ago

"just got out of the shower, no make up on! xxx"

[–]LetsPlayDotA 3 points4 points ago

Is it weird that the first thing I always think about in pictures from Mars or the moon or whatnot is that you can lie down wherever naked (if the temperature allowed it and atmosphere etc, just imagine you could) or whatever and there are no fucking insects whatsoever. You can cover yourself in that dust or whatever and there are no god damn insects? You can lick the ground and it's like, nope, no worm poop.

[–]bardard 6 points7 points ago

And as it processed the photo it had taken, a bit flipped deep within Curiosity's programming. "That's me," the processor realized, "I just took a self-portrait."

And thus, Curiosity became self-aware.

[–]Li5y 4 points5 points ago

OH GOD THAT IS SO CUTE

[–]sudsomatic 2 points3 points ago

How cool would it be to say "I designed that very widget on his face!"

[–]aggrosan 3 points4 points ago

he looks terrified

[–]Theopaulson -1 points0 points ago

Wall-E!

[–]PaleOfBucket 2 points3 points ago

soemone start a lavalife profile for that sexy machine!

[–]lessmiserables 2 points3 points ago

Fucking hipsters.

"I was on Mars before it was cool."

[–]JERKFACE9000 2 points3 points ago

She shoots myspace angles too. NASA has successfully invaded another planet with social media.

[–]Alexbrainbox 0 points1 point ago

Not long before we get /r/curiosityrovergonewild ...

[–]miezu78 0 points1 point ago

hey look its the camera the Lumia 920 uses

[–]backwater 2 points3 points ago

[–]JonMeadows 1 point2 points ago

This is one of the most profound photographs in robot history

[–]delmar15 2 points3 points ago

Johnny Five?

[–]iamrunningman 2 points3 points ago

Not quite the same...I don't have a fucking robotic arm.

[–]MothaNature 10 points11 points ago

After reading your handle, these clicks were rather risky.

[–]danE3030 0 points1 point ago

(s)he would be a devious genius if (s)he went back and constantly changed the links to NSFW urls after any comments of his/hers hit the big time.

Oh god what have I done

[–]joedonut 1 point2 points ago

AW

[–]rohr0hroh 1 point2 points ago

Where did you find this?

[–]jessicahonig -1 points0 points ago

Good guy curiosity doesn't take a picture with duck lips.

[–]ForestGnome4 1 point2 points ago

It looks like it could be the next robot in Mystery Science Theater 3000.

i'll never be able to unsee that face.

[–]turtle_in_trenchcoat 1 point2 points ago

Because Earth is too mainstream

[–]ar404 1 point2 points ago

It looks like the picture was corrected for tilt. They should have kept it tilted, and, if possible, extended the lens on its head for "duck lips." Then it would be a true Facebook self-shot.

[–]bro_latona -1 points0 points ago

Wall-E

[–]tree_D 1 point2 points ago

I still don't know if I can wrap my mind around the fact that we have a rover on Mars. And it just took a picture of its self... nope still not wrapped around...

[–]imboredsoimdoingthis 1 point2 points ago

This may sound completely stupid but is the camera behind something? Like some sort of housing unit for it? It's just from the picture it looks like the camera is inside something.

[–]Vaywen 2 points3 points ago

I think its tilt correction

[–]Felonypursuit 0 points1 point ago

Why do I always expect to see something lurking in the background?

[–]Spiderdan 1 point2 points ago

Look at how cute he is!

[–]DollarsThanSense 1 point2 points ago

If an alien and intelligent species saw Curiosity, would they be frightened? If they met humans, should they be frightened?

[–]plastic_humvee 0 points1 point ago

Aww....it's....cute...

[–]Kansas11 1 point2 points ago

I'm disappointed that this isn't NSFW PORN

[–]Sandlotboy 0 points1 point ago

Just the fact that we can do this makes me believe In unicorns, dragons and that rainbows shot excellence

[–]RzK 0 points1 point ago

It doesnt sound so tricky if they rotated one of 17 cameras around

[–]BornLoser 0 points1 point ago

I don't think it will be difficult for a robot who uses calculations to figure out how to turn it. But for people yeah it's hard

[–]you_so_feynman 0 points1 point ago

[–]squeegep -1 points0 points ago

[–]Ozzymandias 0 points1 point ago

Woohoo! Selfies! On Mars!

[–]Deleriom 0 points1 point ago

I am just glad there is no duck face.

[–]sutsu 0 points1 point ago

[–]NeverAsTired 1 point2 points ago

And yet, no duckface...

[–]omgfrankshutup 1 point2 points ago

[–]reimer1291 0 points1 point ago

Good guy rover, Takes selfshot from Mars, doesn't duck face.

[–]Maggadin 0 points1 point ago

I don't know why, but I find it kind of adorable.

[–]philsaysstfu 0 points1 point ago

Too bad no one told Curiosity to change the shutter settings to avoid flicker bars. Still a better shot than a teenager's instagram.

[–]denta87 0 points1 point ago

lol the name of this account...

I'm confused... When people talk about curiosity taking a picture or something they always say "curiosity turned its cameras and took a picture etc. etc." my question is does it actually take the pictures itself, with no outside influence? Or are there people controlling what it does.

[–]the_pinguin 0 points1 point ago

[–]ChaosBozz 1 point2 points ago

Mars Rover Curiosity uploaded a new pic.

"OMGGGG my treads are SOO fat, I'm so ugly!!!"

[–]ReallyEvilCanine 1 point2 points ago

This is NOT the sort of link I expect from you, Mr NSFW_PORN_ONLY, especially with your million-karma strut post from earlier today.

[–]Osiris32 1 point2 points ago

It's kind of amazing to think about this. Look at that photo. All the little details of the rover. Those little screws, the wires, the lenses, all those had to be installed by people. Each one had to be exactly perfect, each one had to be designed, tested, retested, installed, inspected, and signed off. It's fucking amazing, the technology involved in making something the size of a Geo Metro, filling it with a nuclear reactor and all sorts of scientific equipment, and sending it 100,000,000 miles away to land by one of the most complex landing systems ever devised.

Science. Fuck yeah.

[–]ktphoenix 1 point2 points ago

I'm crossing my fingers for Wall-E 2.

[–]BuckNekkid 1 point2 points ago

Johnny... 4?
