Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Is it just me or do photos in space always seem to be extra clear and crisp. Am I imagining it, is it a natural phenomenon, or just NASA has good post production?

[–]Screen-Name 119 points120 points ago

If you went to space, would you bring a shitty camera?

[–]EltaninAntenna 18 points19 points ago

All other arguments are nice and sound, but this one wins the subthread.

[–]Izawwlgood 38 points39 points ago

It's also that there's no particulate stuff in the way. No such thing as a foggy day.

[–]VerneAsimov 15 points16 points ago

And no light diffusion through the atmosphere? That sounds like it'd be a factor.

[–]orost 5 points6 points ago

When you bring a camera into space, its price is completely irrelevant in comparison to the cost of actually bringing it up there, so of course you're going to get the very best there is.

[–]duvakiin 5 points6 points ago

but then who is background light?

[–]fucksmith 44 points45 points ago

HELLO YES THIS IS SUN

[–]Anderlan 1 point2 points ago

Most awesome part of this pic is the way the sun doesn't blow out a huge chunk of the image from atmospheric diffusion like it would on earth.

[–]UnclaimedUsername 2 points3 points ago

No stars? Fake! The ISS is a hoax, wake up sheep!

[–]Roy141 1 point2 points ago

I think they have one of those in Halo 4.

[–]PerryB 10 points11 points ago

http://www.hasselbladusa.com/

If you had these cameras, your pictures would be crisp.

[–]rexhardwick 11 points12 points ago

He's holding a pro DSLR not a Hasselblad.

[–]carolinax 15 points16 points ago

I'm an idiot. My first thought was "what if he drops it?!"

[–]17-40 9 points10 points ago

Nikon provides them with top level gear. There are a bunch of D3's on the ISS.

[–]krymise 2 points3 points ago

They used Hasselblad 500's on the moon.

[–]KBarn86 0 points1 point ago

Wow one of their H cameras cost 36,000$ stock.....

[–]vnkid 1 point2 points ago

http://www.airspacemag.com/space-exploration/FEATURE-FirstPhoto.html

Although, I suppose the fact that the camera is from 1946 plays a factor in the quality of that picture.

[–]solargatorade 0 points1 point ago

When NASA go up, they go the extra mile.

[–]President-Nulagi 1 point2 points ago

It's likely due to the huge contrast between the blackness of space and the white of the spacesuits.

The photograph is actually rather blurred at the 1:1 scale, and exhibits a lot of chromatic aberration in the outer edges.

[–]motioneccentrica 140 points141 points ago

Now thats what is worthy of /r/pics, not fucking pets.

[–]skybike 38 points39 points ago

Yeah no one wants to see people fucking their pets.

[–]JudgeFudge123 10 points11 points ago

Speak for yourself ;3

[–]__Rainbow_Dash__ 3 points4 points ago

[–]theshamespearofhurt 2 points3 points ago

[–]ss2man44 3 points4 points ago

For all you know, that person could be both female and making a duck face behind that helmet.

[–]ildementis -4 points-3 points ago

said what i came to say

[–]gg_h4x_ 2 points3 points ago

Hear, hear.

[–]blarg_dino 0 points1 point ago

Indeed

[–]godofallcows -1 points0 points ago

Yeah! I only want reposts like this in the front page.

[–]mushroomwig 58 points59 points ago

The ultimate 'myspace' shot.

[–]DatoeDakari 15 points16 points ago

What's 'myspace'?

[–]iamNebula 4 points5 points ago

Don't worry son, dooon't worry. Pat pat

[–]spupy 2 points3 points ago

I bet he is making a duck face underneath that visor!

[–]anonymous123421 0 points1 point ago

They rebranded to my_______

[–]captain_cornflakes 0 points1 point ago

Camera taking a mirror pic of itself?

[–]SHEEEIIIIIIITTTT 0 points1 point ago

I sure as hell hope he/she isn't doing a duckface under that mask

[–]PerryB 8 points9 points ago

Anyone care to explain what's going on with the lens flare?

[–]Three_Headed_Monkey 20 points21 points ago

Well lens flare usually occurs when a very bring object is in frame, usually the Sun.

Considering that I'm pretty sure that the light source over the astronauts shoulder is the Sun I think lens flare is rather expected.

If you're wondering why the lens flare is in the pattern it is, I have no idea. You'd probably have to examine the inner workings of the camera used to figure that one out.

[–]PerryB 13 points14 points ago

Sorry, yes, I understand the lens flare, I meant the pattern it was creating.

[–]acearchie 3 points4 points ago

Its probably stopped down quite a lot. F16 maybe therefore creating the star like patterns visible on the errr... Star.

[–]JD-King 4 points5 points ago

No atmospheric filter? Just straight-up sunshine.

[–]Three_Headed_Monkey 0 points1 point ago

Ah ok. Yeah, I'm not sure on that one. Probably something to do with the internal workings of the camera and the angle the sunlight is entering it. I'm no expert.

[–]Lorem_Ipsum -1 points0 points ago

That is artifacts caused by very strong light hitting the digital sensor. The sensor is an array of light receptive sensors squished together that may or may not look something like this. What you are seeing in that image is either an artifact being picked up by the sensor and just making a weird effect on the image; or light hitting the sensor and being reflected back into glass on the lens, which then is getting picked up by the sensor and rendered as an image.

[–]gingerafloat 4 points5 points ago

The shape depends on the aperture blades of the camera.

More relevant info here.

[–]whyoulittle 16 points17 points ago

be gentle! but what's the source of light behind him? it's not the sun is it?

[–]Three_Headed_Monkey 17 points18 points ago

Well, considering that the Earth is completely lit up it and isn't in shadow at all it might well be.

[–]acken 4 points5 points ago

How is he lit up?

[–]Three_Headed_Monkey 5 points6 points ago

Well, the side of him you are looking at is in shadow. It stands out more when you look at his arms in the reflection of the visor. They are in shadow but you can still see them.

The reason why he is lit up is likely due the diffuse reflection of light from the earth onto him. You don't have to be in direct sunlight to be lit up. If, on a clear night, the moon is enough to see by when outside, the earth should light him up pretty well, considering it's taking up a much larger portion of the sky than the moon does.

Besides the earth there is probably light coming from other sources as well. He's got lamps on his helmet etc.

[–]sawthisonfacebook 1 point2 points ago

On earth if we take a shot like this, the atmosphere (clouds, water, etc.) would be refracting the light so much so that the sky would be blown out. I think that's maybe why it looks so weird here. There's no giant soft box of sky, just the unfiltered "bulb" of the sun surrounded by the dark void of space. The astronaut is getting some nice bounce off the earth too just as the moon bounces light off the sun making it visible in our night sky. The flare pattern is most definitly due to the shape of lens elements.

[–]Johndoe9990 0 points1 point ago

Also, he has his visor down which is only necessary on the light side.

[–]Three_Headed_Monkey 0 points1 point ago

I did not know that. Very cool.

[–]freemorph 6 points7 points ago

That would be the sun! It's white when viewed from space.

[–]carolinax 2 points3 points ago

That's incredible. As if someone turned on a lamp in a dark room.

Edit: in a very very large room with some marbles in it.

[–]Kwinten 5 points6 points ago

No, it's that other really close light source in the sky that lights up our planet.

[–]J0MS 11 points12 points ago

Taking selfies in space.

[–]sulejmankulenovic 31 points32 points ago

"just me hangin out in space lol"

[–]Killer_man 1 point2 points ago

Good sensor.

[–]nomzcookiez 0 points1 point ago

What are those pink/red lights int he back?

[–]TipYourHatToMe 1 point2 points ago

That feeling of being really small sets in when you see how dark the blackness of space is behind him.

[–]framwhite 1 point2 points ago

The only cool selfie I have ever seen.

[–]bscotty919 1 point2 points ago

it worries the fuck out of me that that helmet is scratched

I want to be you!

[–]Matr1cks 0 points1 point ago

At least you cant tell if that astronaut is doing that awful Duckface.

[–]JakeSanchard 1 point2 points ago

So this guy has a reflective material in front of him that can hold the whole reflection of the Earth. In theory, he could look at the Earth and have the same reflection on his pupil, 6 billion people on that giant rock, in one tiny reflection....

sits down and stares off into the distance

[–]Pengii 0 points1 point ago

Dumbass left the flash on.

[–]p47121ck 0 points1 point ago

He's making a duck face behind that helment

[–]DrewPnuts 0 points1 point ago

Selfie

[–]AliasUndercover 0 points1 point ago

To me, the hardest part of being an astronaut must be learning not to need to scratch for hours at a time...

[–]AP3Brain 1 point2 points ago

Hard to top a picture like that...

[–]JayTbo 0 points1 point ago

"I'm in space #YOLO"

[–]eldovaking 0 points1 point ago

I see a duck face being made. Post it to fb.

[–]dannymacom 0 points1 point ago

now the astronauts can't keep themselves from doing self-shots for an internet audience.

What kind of training do astronauts get to get over the whole mindfuck equation?

[–]Dr_Medic345 0 points1 point ago

And you just know that fucker is duckfacing.

[–]Dr_Medic345 0 points1 point ago

And happens if he dropped the camera? He be fucked.

If anyone is looking for another picture like this I found this a while back http://www.ilikenikon.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/570395main_iss028e016175_hires.jpg

[–]80sKid 0 points1 point ago

Why do they always block out the background stars in space images? It seems like they would be spectacular to see without atmospheric disturbance.

[–]StarWarsAndStuff 0 points1 point ago

I think he blinked.

[–]AJJJJ 0 points1 point ago

Anyone know the origin of this quote? Seen it a few times now

[–]itsme_yourdad 0 points1 point ago

I'll bet that astronaut is making a duck face under there.

[–]CaptnBarbosa 0 points1 point ago

duck face /sigh

[–]DrunkWizardSailor 0 points1 point ago

Can anyone please explain to me why no star light is visible in this photo? Is it so dark in space that the astronaut is overexposed making the stars "invisible" per say?

[–]thatguycolin 0 points1 point ago

Is that a fat joke?

[–]KickedInTheHead 0 points1 point ago

Why can we not see any stars? I always thought that once you leave the atmosphere you would basically see the galaxy in all it's glory.

[–]PascalsLawl 0 points1 point ago

I really want to go to space.

[–]TeCuervo 0 points1 point ago

I bet there is a duck-face in there.

[–]Madargende -1 points0 points ago

In a hollywood basement....

[–]chxjd -2 points-1 points ago

What's with the sort of 'pollution' around the lamp in the background? Is that the lamp's effect or the camera's?

[–]chzchbo 3 points4 points ago

That my friend is the Sun, the reason life exists, no mere lamp. And they are discussing the interesting 'lens flare' farther up in this thread

[–]CreativeRedditName 0 points1 point ago

Are people really this stupid? Either that or we just got trolled hard.

[–]chzchbo 0 points1 point ago

I just think it's amazing to look at, a nuclear fireball 10 billion years long...
