Best link ever award.

[–]abw 8 points9 points ago

I didn't believe you at first, but having watched it I have to concede that you're right.

[–]IsThisWhereANameGoes 3 points4 points ago

I think he would beg to differ.

[–]wyntor 0 points1 point ago

I don't understand the down votes here for you, I find it rather funny and agree with your statement. Up vote for you, pity I only have one.

[–]ludod 28 points29 points ago

While watching this my eyes were drawn to the colored glows up in the atmosphere, but then eventually to the stars in the background.

We are so very little.

[–]StellaMaroo 12 points13 points ago

I'm going to save this link for whenever I have a bad day. This video makes me feel like my problems are so insignificant.

[–]Motafication 7 points8 points ago

It makes me want to travel, and meet all of those people. So many people! Each one with their own life; their own hopes and dreams and loves. So many places we'll never see or know. That tree in Pabuhar that we used to play under as kids. The street in Marzhan-Hellersdorf with that guy who gave us free beer. The lovely girl in Fitzroy Crossing - Love at first sight.

Spectacular.

[–]Shyamallamadingdong 13 points14 points ago

My brain automatically assumes those Aurora Boreali were computer generated, Movies have ruined me

[–]beergoggles69 5 points6 points ago

Same here. Fucking CGI. Can you imagine how mind blowing this must be for someone straight outta 1960? I say 1960 becuase everything we have now would be mindblowing to someone from the 19th century, yet in 1960 they had TV and knew that space exploration was possible, so seeing that video would be quite literally awesome

[–]kirkt 8 points9 points ago

I'm surprised at how "low" the ISS orbits. I always thought of it as being far enough out to see the better part of the globe. This looks like it's barely out of the atmosphere. Thanks for a great link.

[–]Squid_Tamer 9 points10 points ago

Yep, it's in "Low Earth Orbit", and it's on the lower end of that even. Every once in a while they have to give it another push, because it drags against the unimaginably thin outer layer of the atmosphere.

Every mile higher costs more I guess, and they wanted something that both the Shuttle and Soyuz could reach easily.

Here's a cool picture that I just found.

Geosynchronous satellites are EXPENSIVE. Really from the picture, I'm amazed that we have so many at all...

[–]Euriti 0 points1 point ago

The ISS orbits at a distance of 350-400km from Earth. It is close enough that it gets pulled (very slowly) towards the earth

[–]Freeroot 23 points24 points ago

10/10 would click again.

[–]meltshake 6 points7 points ago

[–]losercore 5 points6 points ago

I think I saw my house.

[–]ksa2 5 points6 points ago

This almost looks computer generated. The bits of lightning seem almost comical. How many frames are being taken per what unit time?

[–]007T 4 points5 points ago

The ISS orbits the Earth fully once every 92 minutes, that should give you a pretty good idea of how fast the images are sped up.

[–]thewolfcastle 3 points4 points ago

Any idea what that song is or maybe music that is similar to it? It's very relaxing. Perfect for the video.

[–]kurt832 8 points9 points ago

[–]gocougs11 2 points3 points ago

TIL thunder/lightning storms look awesome as shit from space.

[–]wastedholidays 1 point2 points ago

Is there somewhere I can find a proper download link?

I think this would be awesome to having running on my projector at home. Just in the background for ambiance.

[–]yarsteph 1 point2 points ago

That shit blew my mind.

[–]NunyaBisnus 79 points80 points ago

I like how you can see the thunderstorms.

[–]Ivarrr 34 points35 points ago

they look like massive raves

[–]KingNick 1 point2 points ago

The flash of light in the top left corner...is that lightning? Can you see lightning from space?!

[–]brokenearth02 0 points1 point ago

... what did you think it was?

[–]azorin 0 points1 point ago

...and all the massive flashing on the right after that. So yes, you can see lightning from space.

[–]DarkWalker25 20 points21 points ago

Baba yetu is now playing in my head. Thanks.

[–]TheGameboy 0 points1 point ago

I started singing it when it started moving.

[–]That_Extra_Mile 62 points63 points ago

I've been watching this for a whole minute now, and I still haven't seen the big "Universal Studios" letters appear yet.

[–]Dr_Funkenstein_ 9 points10 points ago

Other side of the planet. They'll loop around soon, orbit is quick, right?

[–]Shappie 10 points11 points ago

I'm setting a new record for 'How long can I stare at one gif?'

[–]zupman86 8 points9 points ago

I always thought that Earth was amazing, but God Damn! This is incredible.

[–]Zook 13 points14 points ago

The thing that blows me away about this is that my mind still has a hard time grasping that this is indeed Earth.

That somewhere in this GIF (let alone the video) is not only myself, but all the friends and family I know.

It just blows me away.

[–]007T 15 points16 points ago

As Carl once said

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

[–]PAUL_SCHOLES_AMA 3 points4 points ago

Whoa.

[–]KiLLaKRaGGy 6 points7 points ago

can anyone make out what part of the Earth this is?

[–]KeepRightExcept2Pass 11 points12 points ago

Starts coming in from the NW and passes over the California coast, with Los Angeles then San Diego passing beneath on the right. As it cuts down toward Mexico, you can see the Baja California peninsula on the right then Mexico City pass directly underneath. Central America curves to the left as you head over the water toward South America. You just get a glimpse of the coast as the gif crossfades and loops. Doesn't even come close to a full orbit.

[–]OutlawJoseyWales 0 points1 point ago

i think at the end its the pacific northwest+alaska

[–]TyMan210 6 points7 points ago

It looks like it's moving south along the west coast, to me. The last half looks like an inverted Mexico and central America.

[–]ZedFish 1 point2 points ago

That's my guess. You can see Baja California off to the right at the start, and the thunderstorms appear to be on the west coast of Mexico.

[–]profanusnothus 3 points4 points ago

That's actually Central America. You can see the Rockies/Sierra Nevadas and Baja California right before the end. It's easy to make the mistake though because we're used to seeing the Earth in a North-South orientation.

[–]Luigi2198 0 points1 point ago

I thought the end was Maine because you can see some of the great lakes right a the end

[–]guigr 1 point2 points ago

It looks like California at first then Mexico then loop.

[–]bnshv 1 point2 points ago

I thought it was Europe mostly -- I think I see parts of The Alps, France, Spain on the left, and a bit of Africa in the far left towards the end.

I might be wrong of course.

[–]SeedyOne 4 points5 points ago

I've posted before about making this into an animated desktop wallpaper in Windows 7 (/r/dreamscene).

Here's the ISS space clip for preview/download (link in description).

[–]Jimbles 0 points1 point ago

Aaaaaand there's another new subreddit for me. Thanks!

[–]ultimaweapon463 3 points4 points ago

So is that going south from Southern California, through Mexico and back to the Pacific? I've watching for like 10 minutes, trying to figure it out...

Without all that development below you'd never have seen the view from above.

[–]Isaac_Clarke_Is_Dead 0 points1 point ago

whoa...

[–]cbros606 2 points3 points ago

I love how much of the world has been taken over by the humans. You can see all the cities and lights.

[–]2xEinlanzer 2 points3 points ago

[–]TheDawi 0 points1 point ago

[–]TYMBOM 1 point2 points ago

Very nice!

[–]ellowelle 0 points1 point ago

Mesmerizing. Way cool.

[–]aithendodge 0 points1 point ago

Holy fuck that's mesmerizing.

[–]Mydas 0 points1 point ago

Tight

[–]DonnyDreamliner 0 points1 point ago

This makes me think... if we really put our collective minds to it, humans could throw the sweetest planetary rave ever

[–]Vete_Cy 0 points1 point ago

wow

[–]Scipio33 1 point2 points ago

Put your fists in front of the screen. It feels absolutely amazing!

[–]moocowpig 0 points1 point ago

Amazing. I can't stop looking at it

[–]Level_75_Zapdos 1 point2 points ago

Goku charging his Spirit Bomb.

[–]joedel311 1 point2 points ago

wait, the earth is round?

[–]Semi_radical 0 points1 point ago

Kinda disappointed this wasn't that 90's drink...

[–]theclubfive 0 points1 point ago

This is dope as fuck.

[–]Virus_in_the_Air 0 points1 point ago

Hey, I saw my town down there!

[–]jeddles 0 points1 point ago

mate, that made my day. TY.

[–]WilliamDangerFord 0 points1 point ago

I'm surprised no one's commented on the sweet little tropical storms that you can see popping up off the coast. To me that caught my attention more than the city lights.

[–]pastisset 0 points1 point ago

Oh there is people taking photos from the clouds!

[–]rickscarf 0 points1 point ago

The camera was held by the "they see me hating'" guy walking around

[–]LegallyInsane 0 points1 point ago

Science!

[–]toddski11 0 points1 point ago

Where's the gum?

[–]Former_Manc 0 points1 point ago

It's so beautiful. They should have sent a poet.

[–]sticx 0 points1 point ago

At first I thought there were some of the clouds were glitching in this gif. After watching a couple loops I realized that they lightning storms.

Amazing gif.

[–]thesongbirdy 0 points1 point ago

You can see the moon reflected in the ocean at one point. How awesome is that?

[–]AaronM09 -1 points0 points ago

Aaaaaaand that's my house, there.

[–]bettorworse 0 points1 point ago

Anyone else whistling the Star Trek:TOS theme?

[–]Jballa69 0 points1 point ago

Did anyone else slowly lean towards their monitor?

[–]AdamLynch 1 point2 points ago

What are those light flashes? Lightning?

[–]kou5oku 0 points1 point ago

I love how orbiting isn't so much about circling a thing, its more like falling at just the right angle and speed to miss said thing.

[–]jddowney 0 points1 point ago

What's most interesting to me is how isolated some of these very, very bright spots are. If you look at most places in the developed world you'd see a net of lights with big splotches. I guess I just assumed some sort of interdependence with those splotches. I'm surprised some of these are so self-sufficient (choice or by force).

[–]brewerbeast105 0 points1 point ago

i think i saw my house

[–]2jam 0 points1 point ago

I'm gonna try slow this gif down and set it as a moving desktop wallpaper, wish me luck.

[–]redromina 0 points1 point ago

That totally gave me a migraine, but it was AWESOME.

[–]iamthepalmtree 1 point2 points ago

Where's the sun?

[–]Papillonvk 0 points1 point ago

At the backside.

[–]TheAristocrat0 1 point2 points ago

Where can I see the non-gif version of this?

[–]AS1LV3RN1NJA 1 point2 points ago

Where can I find a massive gif version of this?

[–]nsfwdreamer 1 point2 points ago

Here's the video that it's taken from:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74mhQyuyELQ&feature=fvwrel

[–]ichigo2862 0 points1 point ago

That is fucking gorgeous. I love how the earth just keeps that thin layer of atmosphere and it's just perfect for sustaining life. I love it.
