European? I have like 6 of these in my town, a much easier way to change direction with streets these complicated

[–]polkaroo2 144 points145 points ago

When I drove for the first time in england I was confused by them but after I got the hang of them I can't believe we don't replace every stoplight with them in Canada, They're awesome! I used to like to speed up while going around them in my little rental car when it wasn't busy. Was fun!

[–]MestR 50 points51 points ago

Here in Umeå, Sweden, we have more than 60 of them. (look, there's 7 of them here)

And why not? They help enforce the speed limit while also making traffic smoother. Any driver that isn't shit will be able to use them very easily.

[–]Sir_Lilja 2 points3 points ago

But Milton Keynes is more than twice the size of Umeå in both total area and population.

[–]thecubaproject 30 points31 points ago

[–]OvationEmulation 14 points15 points ago

What the...? It looks like someone used crop circles as schematics.

[–]thoroughlynicechap 3 points4 points ago

Was about to point out the famous Swindon 5 roundabout roundabout... But thought I'd check comments first tips hat

[–]beldaran123 2 points3 points ago

There's one like that in Hemel Hempstead. It's so messed up because you feel like you're going round the big one backwards when you go right at all the minis.

[–]nusmesa 4 points5 points ago

zooming out made me wanna play sim city :(

the good one

[–]MinorThreat89 4 points5 points ago

I wonder if you could integrate google maps with sim city in some way.

[–]Kurayamino 68 points69 points ago

back when I first got my licence, my friend and I would occasionally go to one off a main street in town and just go around and around and around and see how many other people we could get doing it.

Our record is 5.

[–]SomeFakeInternetName 105 points106 points ago

"Hey kids, look... there's parliament. There's Big Ben. There's parliament. There's Big Ben..."

[–]pookage 22 points23 points ago

Although they're next to each other and parliament square has traffic lights :(

[–]Frap_Gadz 2 points3 points ago

Actually it's really a Gyratory so it's kinda like a huge roundabout.

The scariest Gyratory in England is Hanger Lane Gyratory, I used to drive through there all the time when I lived in Wimbledon and did a lot of work in North London. I found it OK, but most people have no idea where they're going.

[–]nodefect 2 points3 points ago

Actually it's really a Gyratory so it's kinda like a huge roundabout.

A squareabout?

[–]ynglv 24 points25 points ago

All I can imagine is 5 people laughing hysterically because they're being stupid on purpose.

[–]phishf00d 13 points14 points ago

The massive advantage of these over lights is in low traffic flow. The number of times I have been stopped at lights to let 1 car go after I have been stopped for 30 seconds. Roundabouts would let both cars go no problem.

The draw back is that if you get a high enough traffic flow on one road, the road to its left never gets to go.

[–]e471681g5136as 7 points8 points ago

you can also get temporary lights on roundabouts that only come on at peak times to fix this issue. There were some where i used to work in Derby

[–]Redstone_Engineer 7 points8 points ago

Sounds like France is a land for you! I think they have the most roundabouts in the world!

[–]Microchaton 2 points3 points ago

Yup, we fucking love them so they're put everyfuckingwhere. They cost ridiculous amounts of money too.

[–]Forever_Capone 2 points3 points ago

Why? It's a piece if road with something in the middle, how can t possibly cost large amounts?

[–]Zyzzyvas 13 points14 points ago

We have them all over the place here in Victoria, BC. Here's what the interchange at the highway next to our airport looks like: http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6233/6377789351_4b9426e521_b.jpg

[–]seppuku_related 5 points6 points ago

They actually look like very well designed roundabouts.

[–]Woofiny 0 points1 point ago

I love our Canadian roundabouts. They have pretty gardens in the middle, and they're efficient! :D

[–]henry_blackie 7 points8 points ago

Now try the "Magic Roundabout".

Pic 1 Pic 2 Wiki

[–]penation4000 4 points5 points ago

Sweet, I live in Swindon (the town where the magic roundabout is). It is our only claim to fame, and rightfully so, we have nothing of interest.

[–]walgman 0 points1 point ago

Get a rear wheel drive car and you can drift them at night. Problem is tires.

[–]Jabberminor 2 points3 points ago

I believe that the main reason is because most cities and towns (like Calgary) are down in a very blocky system. So therefore there's 4 paths at each intersection. So a 4-way traffic light intersection would work best. Good use of space too.

However, in the UK and other European countries, our towns and cities weren't made like that. For example, in my town, there's one roundabout that has 6 exits. No way would a traffic light intersection work well there.

Just my two pennies.

[–]Robotochan 20 points21 points ago

[–]VogeGandire 8 points9 points ago

I once drove round the Magic Roundabout.

I think I saw through time.

[–]Magnesus 6 points7 points ago

I live a few kilometeres from a city that is full of them. But I live in Europe. As a driver I love them. Much safer and faster than lights.

[–]pimpolho_saltitao 7 points8 points ago

6? AH! Puny human! In my country we have them by the hundreds in each town! :P

[–]DetectiveClownMD 11 points12 points ago

They added two in my town and now plan to remove them because people keep crashing. Its sad. I want to move.

[–]Shomud 12 points13 points ago

Every time they build one in my town the people throw a fit. In their minds it's the most complicated thing in the world. When in reality it's no more complicated than a 4-way stop.

[–]3206 27 points28 points ago

People in your town sound pretty stupid.

[–]YeahIDontGiveAFuck 14 points15 points ago

America fuck yeah?

[–]ChiperSoft 6 points7 points ago

After living in southern California for 10 years I'm convinced that no one in this state knows how to handle 4 way stops either.

[–]preske 3 points4 points ago

is it that goddamn hard to FOLLOW a road that doesn't go straight for a bazzilion miles?

[–]merlinho 4 points5 points ago

In the UK, they put traffic lights on the busier roundabouts. The combination is occasionally quite confusing to non-locals. Basically it seems to be in order to reduce decision making from the driving process to as little as possible.

[–]justgivingsomeadvice 3 points4 points ago

Meh, I live in an American suburb of about 250K, and we have probably one roundabout that I can think of. In my vacation in Spain, though, we didn't see one 4-way intersection except in Madrid. Roundabouts everywhere.

[–]UmUhIdontknow 2 points3 points ago

Yep. We have them in my state. The problem is people just go flying the fuck through their yield signs and do not understand those in the circle have the right of way. BLEARGH!!

EDIT: was too outraged to use the correct words.

[–]motorcityvicki 19 points20 points ago

*right of way

[–]Hobbesickles 131 points132 points ago

I can't believe that smaller car just rolled over like that and gave up on life.

[–]KlaatuBaradaNikto 3 points4 points ago

[–]the_palest_gopher 44 points45 points ago

If you can't handle the heat stay out of Swindon http://i.imgur.com/9ZjjO.jpg

[–]Thyri 8 points9 points ago

Everyone raises this one - its really easy to get across the problem is the people who don't indicate and the fact at certain points you appear to go roundsome of those smaller suckers the wrong way!

Whenever I go back there I try to avoid it!

Here in Cornwall we have a LOT of very small double roundabouts - its fun watching the tourists on them (well actually its a pain in the butt as it always takes longer to get anywhere)

[–]merlinho 3 points4 points ago

My girlfriend is from Cornwall and was ranting a few weeks ago about how tourists can't handle double mini roundabouts. It seems they are just as much part of Cornwall as pastys.

[–]effervet 7 points8 points ago

As an American I would like to say what the fucking FUCK is that?! Motherfucking whirlpools? Where the fuck are the entrances/exits? Is this some kind of magical time-traveling dimensional shit? Is there a purpose to this aside from scaring the piss out of non-natives? What the fuck. WAT. DAFUQ.

[–]Homletmoo 5 points6 points ago

Simple, Five mini roundabouts arranged in a circle. You can use each mini roundabout to do a u-turn. You can switch to the next mini roundabout anti-clockwise using the inside lanes of the larger roundabout, or to the next clockwise using the outside lanes. As for signalling... that's where it gets complicated.

[–]SamTheSammich 3 points4 points ago

Simple

I don't think that word means what you think it means.

[–]aharm 2 points3 points ago

I actually got scared and had to look away.

[–]EOTWAWKI 27 points28 points ago

We have lots of these in Canada - well, British Columbia, anyway.

When used properly will get more traffic through an intersection than a traffic light.

[–]Ceejae 20 points21 points ago

I think everywhere in the world uses them except the US. Australia does. They are really good, I'm not sure why you guys are so against them.

Eg: If four vehicles simultaneously approach an intersection (a small one, not like OP's gif) with a round-about, it is possible for all four vehicles to immediately move through the intersection while barely even having to slow down.

[–]ZeMilkman 18 points19 points ago

We had them in Germany, then someone was like "they increase the risk of accidents lets replace them with regular intersections" then we figured out that they actually reduce accidents and now we are building them again.

Deutschland fick ja!

[–]amityriot 18 points19 points ago

I.... Didn't know the US doesn't have roundabouts?

[–]edfriedrice 21 points22 points ago

no. They confuse the hell out of them. Much like portion control.

[–]darksyn17 2 points3 points ago

But the actual reason being that a grid system is far more efficient as far as space utilization in urban climates.

[–]xisforxray 10 points11 points ago

Milton Keynes - The home of the roundabout.

[–]Trubshawgreen 3 points4 points ago

I heard that there are so many roundabouts in Milton Keynes that the tread on the front left tyres of local cars wears down significantly quicker than on the other tyres.

Google Maps shows an aerial view of some of them.

[–]mirglof 23 points24 points ago

beats waiting at a stop light for 3 minutes, then trying to make a left turn while none of the on coming traffic will let you through and you have to sit through ANOTHER red light.

[–]AhhhClem 5 points6 points ago

There is a circle in DC where to get to one street one has to get into an inner circle and wait at a light to get out. If one does not know how it works they just keep going round in circles wondering how to get there.

I lived on a two way circle in California which messed up everyone not familiar with it. It has since been changed to one way.

Here in alabamA they put in a couple new traffic circles some years back and I remember seeing a car drive the wrong way to make a left turn.

I wish they would build more of them.

[–]InfiniteLiveZ 3 points4 points ago

traffic circles.

You call them traffic circles???

[–]Quipinside 3 points4 points ago

You're supposed to be pulled half-way into the intersection anyway, then when the light turns red and oncoming traffic stops you complete the turn (never back up).

That way at least one car gets through every cycle.

[–]yashar1 8 points9 points ago

[–]tpman24 9 points10 points ago

Nothing wrong with roundabouts. Diverging diamond interchanges are a little strange though.

[–]Hellazwasaword 4 points5 points ago

What the?

[–]KagatoLNX 2 points3 points ago

We have some of these in Missouri. They're awesome. It's hard to describe, but they definitely make things smoother when entering and exiting a highway.

[–]RPofkins 4 points5 points ago

And now I want to play oTTD again...

[–]I_have_a_Secret 7 points8 points ago

I don't know about you guys but sometimes I go around these roundabouts 4 or 5 times just for fun.

[–]The_Nigger_General 6 points7 points ago

So, you feel like an imbecile then?

[–]othersomethings 68 points69 points ago

Roundabouts are AWESOME and the U.S. should have adopted them as standard a LONG time ago.

[–]moarpie 53 points54 points ago

The only problem is that knowing how to drive properly is a prerequisite for these to work effectively and from what I've seen here in Texas so far, this would be a huge problem.

[–]Lord_of_Womba 11 points12 points ago

People really don't understand the 2 lane roundabouts. Outside lane is for turning immediately, inside lane for a later turn.

[–]CallidusUK 20 points21 points ago

Not true, certainly in Europe where roundabouts can have many many exits.

Picture the roundabout like a clock as you enter it via 6 o Clock.

If your exit is going to be prior to 12 o Clock get in the outside lane.

If your exit is after 12 o Clock and thus one of the later lanes, get inside.

Your logic would see you cutting up many cars in Europe via a 2nd exit at 10 o Clock.

[–]Lord_of_Womba 12 points13 points ago

I think we're both trying to say the same thing. A traffic circle here usually has 4 exits/entrances, we'll call the one you're entering #1 and each one follows accordingly. In a two lane circle if everyone who is making an immediate turn (at #2) stays in the outside lane and (the right side lane here) and makes their turn (#2) then the cars behind them (staying in the inner left lane until their turn) can make a clear exit at #3 or #4 because that lane will now be empty.

Also our circles run counter clock wise, if that makes a difference.

[–]SidJenkins 11 points12 points ago

I think we're both trying to say the same thing. A traffic circle here usually has 4 exits/entrances

There's your problem. CallidusUK was saying

Not true, certainly in Europe where roundabouts can have many many exits.

[–]Lord_of_Womba 2 points3 points ago

I'm not sure how many exits you're talking about, but it seems like it should still work the same (in a 2 lane circle) regardless of how many exits there are. However I have no idea how different the circles there may be so I may be wrong.

[–]ubernostrum 12 points13 points ago

Well, the thing here is we're talking about European roads, which are descended from ancient Roman roads. You've perhaps heard the saying "all roads lead to Rome"? This is true, in a way: all roads in a given city converged on one and only one point, which was the palace of the local Roman colonial governor (Dominatrix Maximus, as the office was called). Back when nothing faster than a typical European horse (top speed: two furlongs per fortnight) was on the roads, this was fine and caused no problems.

But with the advent of the "car" (to use the typical and incorrect American term, with "autotyro" being the actual proper name) and especially of the high-performance European cars with their their ability to travel at much higher speeds -- occasionally even surpassing two or three kilometres per day -- this was obviously an unworkable system, as it resulted in frequent deadly crashes when all forty or fifty local roads reached their convergence.

Luckily, the ragtag army of Asteroid the Gallstone had purged all remaining Romans from the area, and though the palaces of the dominatrices had originally been repurposed for the use of travelling shows, they were torn down and replaced with roundabouts (due to that temporary usage, however, they continued to be referred to as "circuses", and this gave birth to the modern English phrase "traffic circle", which incorporates the memory of acrobatic acts enlivened by the need to dodge the always-incoming stream of traffic and resulting flying wreckage -- though note that in some parts of England the alternate "roundhead" was used and is the origin of the name of one of the factions in the Civil War).

Of course, this being Europe, where there is real "history" (not the mere few-hundred-years poor imitation Americans like to talk about), this process completed around the same time William the Conqueror set out on his campaign. As such, the roundabout is thoroughly ingrained into European culture, and many famous roundabouts have developed their own traditional customs and are governed by a bizarre patchwork of ancient and modern law. For example, one single roundabout in England enters and exits the City of London no fewer than thirty-seven times, and until the Omnibus Reform Act 1852 the City was entitled to impose a toll upon each entrance, with a hereditary sinecure position (Lord Garter Belt, named for both the shape of the roundabout, and the manner in which the tolls kept the City's finances from, metaphorically, dropping trou) to manage collection. Others are still subject to poaching laws which, for example, impose a penalty of loss of the right hand and a fine of four shillings for striking a deer in the roadway.

And, of course, with familiarity comes ease of use. Taxi drivers particularly are subjected to a withering battery of tests, working their way up from simple roundabouts with, say, a mere fifty-seven entrances and exits, up to more serious examples whose navigation entails potentially thousands of precisely-timed lane changes, the filing of several customs forms and two flight plans, and a stop partway through for tea. All of which eventually becomes second nature to the naturally-superior European drivers (and their naturally-superior vehicles, the manual transmissions of which include seventeen gears designated solely for use in roundabouts), and is jokingly referred to as "The Knowledge" amongst those who have passed their "O-levels".

[–]Jak2Rich 9 points10 points ago

In NJ they are everywhere (off the highways) and It confuses the fuck out of out of state drivers. They do work well.

[–]Ceejae 3 points4 points ago

SO much more efficient traffic flow.

[–]HermesTGS 2 points3 points ago

Roundabouts =/= grid system

[–]powernut 1 point2 points ago

They are going up everywhere in the US. I personally hate them, because Americans are stupid and I risk death every time I approach one.

In kentucky there is a roundabout that is notorious around town (for being a roundabout)

And i'm pretty confident in my car to take it at a decent speed, but on this occasion it was snowy, and icy, my car can't handle rain let alone ice.

I also notice there is a cop following me, so i slow down to a crawl, and take the roundabout as carefully as i could.

And as i go around this thing at like 5MPH in 5th gear, i could feel myself slowly being pushed to the outer lane against my will.

It was horrifying, after what felt like an eternity i made it to the otherside and continued on my way.

[–]klparrot 5 points6 points ago

These plus RWD are very fun.

[–]Speedingscript 1 point2 points ago

Drive to France, they've got these doubled up, with two lanes and traffic lights. Figure eight look-alike.

[–]abom420 1 point2 points ago

I don't get why everyone loves these. I live my life for the greenlight. If instead of going a straight mile being happy with the greens I had to spend the entire, trip, Stopping to roundabout every half mile I would buy a bicycle. Please keep in mind also traffic doesn't magically disappear in these. The amount of people who would be waiting at the light are now bumper to bumper rounding. Which means in my city were we're at the point of parking THROUGH lights it would be a standstill at points.

FUCK IT, WE'LL DO IT LIVE. -that guy

This one on the gif is one out of Russia if I am right

I remember when I lived in Newcastle, Australia, there was this gigantic roundabout that lead off to the highway, this roundabout was so big and the bus lane was so far on the edge that the road was slightly curved vertically. It scared me half to death every time I went on that roundabout I thought the bus was gonna tip over.

[–]Psychotonic 1 point2 points ago

Riding a bicycle (with way too tall a frame for my short legs) through a roundabout in Germany was the most terrifying thing of my life.

My university has a roundabout off in the distance. But no one around here knows what a fucking roundabout is. So they decided to put these giant dome guides around the parts you're supposed to drive through so you don't stray, right?

Problem is that people are idiots through roundabouts anyway. Freaking out and stopping or swerving suddenly, not understanding the flow. And the domes are so fucking gigantic that they're burst your tires and throw off your alignment if you drive over them just the right way.

Fuck whoever's idea those stupid things were.

[–]low-karma-guy 0 points1 point ago

Happens. Regularly.

[–]chilari 0 points1 point ago

Roundabouts are great. Usually. Better way of keeping traffic flowing than traffic lights in many cases. This one is not so great, and one of the (many) reasons I will never live in Swindon.

[–]egg8 1 point2 points ago

If you think that roundabout is bad (which it isn't), check out this one! http://www.swindonweb.com/uploaded_files/1167/images/lifemagi1.jpg

We have one in Tulsa, OK. They actually tried building over it a couple years ago but it was voted against.

[–]Aspekt1690 -1 points0 points ago

FTW!

[–]Schobbo 0 points1 point ago

i like them as long as they don't have multiple lanes

[–]tastyclaw 0 points1 point ago

[–]Niaiur 0 points1 point ago

I think that your weird first one to get to the lights goes crossroads system sounds much more confusing!

[–]steroberts89 0 points1 point ago

[–]BPond 0 points1 point ago

...because 4 way-stop intersections are WAY more convenient, and WAY more American

[–]ParadoxOO9 1 point2 points ago

Do Americans really struggle to use roundabouts? Being British they kinda just come as second nature, really easy to use.

[–]MagicMurderBean 1 point2 points ago

What... there are no roundabouts in the states? nm I forgot, american cars can only go in a straight line.

[–]MasterBalls 1 point2 points ago

Roundabouts are so much safer than normal junctions because they force the driver to slow down more than at an intersection and if there is a collision there is a smaller angle of incidence rather than at right angles......yo science bitch!!!!

[–]iAmMine89 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, because those outrageous 4 way crossings in US are so much easier to use, dangerous as you like

[–]grurul 0 points1 point ago

So I understand from the comments that there are roundabouts in the US. Why is it still so confusing? Are they different from European ones, or do you just never learn how to drive through one?

[–]Saiing 0 points1 point ago

No you don't. You just found this gif and wanted an excuse to post it.

[–]DarvelMk 0 points1 point ago

I don't understand why Americans(?) are some befuddled by roundabouts, those things are the best traffic solution ever.

[–]Creator_of_Cones 0 points1 point ago

Classic Grand Theft Auto maneuver

[–]phhifan 0 points1 point ago

[–]Menchulat 0 points1 point ago

So, this happens on my city every now and then... (Yes, he actually jumped over the roundabout and the fountain).

[–]londonquietman 0 points1 point ago

wait till u see one of the big roundabouts with 6 satellite roundabouts surrounding it.

[–]sarcasm_sucks 0 points1 point ago

Talking about Europe, this is one of 1Million roundabouts in my city^

siegessäule

[–]D3adkl0wn 0 points1 point ago

[–]ArsenalOwl 1 point2 points ago

They're in America too. But yeah, most people don't seem to know how to use them...

[–]EvilGrimace 0 points1 point ago

The only one I've ever driven in was in Tijuana...not fun

[–]pulezan 1 point2 points ago

The roundabouts are much faster and much easier than the normal traffic light, especially with dense traffic. and if you miss your turn you just need to do one more circle and that's it, no need to drive through the middle. this guy in this gif is obviously an idiot and i don't think anyone should feel like this

[–]thefigpucker 1 point2 points ago

Yeah they started putting these up in west / south st.paul too,I don't get how it is better, now these idiots think it a fucking race track and blow around them at 30 mph or the idiot in the other car does not know what to do so they stop and think about it...

All because of you fish and chip mother fuckers.... ;-)

[–]shifty_coder 0 points1 point ago

I was expecting a gif from European Vacation with a pissed off Clark Griswold, but this is just as satisfying to see!

[–]anumati 0 points1 point ago

Roundabouts AKA traffic circles are really good for reducing injury in collisions. At a typical intersection, cars generally hit each other at right angles, which causes more injuries. In a roundabout, they tend to collide at an oblique angle, causing less damage.
