I'm guessing you still don't qualify for the program, and the Prof still doesn't give a fuck.

[–]LOL_Speedwagon 8 points9 points ago

Just Nikita, who do you think you are? Seal?

The white-out confused me for a second there.

[–]TheDrunkenScotsman 20 points21 points ago

Crafty way to generate more traffic to your website. Nice try, OP.

*edit - grammar

[–]gluemope 2 points3 points ago

Spamy Spam is spamy.

[–]TimMitchell 75 points76 points ago

You seem really bitter. I don't see why there is any need to be resentful over something like this. The professor had a policy about prerequisites, it's not an uncommon thing. Wasn't it your responsibility to know this policy before enrolling?

[–]percypersimmon 32 points33 points ago

I think we're all missing the pretty obvious point that OP is just plugging his website...

[–]One_More_Comment 9 points10 points ago

LOGIC SMASH!!

[–]woodchuck_pie 6 points7 points ago

I completely agree with your statement. It is the students job to ensure that they are finished their prerequisites and the professor very well could have had a very good legal reason as to why they could not bend the rules. I think theres something were not being told. All in all though, I wish NIKITA the best of luck.

[–]Mr_Dmc 1 point2 points ago

Poor OP, he came here for support and karma, but all he got was the hard truth.

[–]inoffensive1 0 points1 point ago

I suppose it's up to the professor to decide if adherence to the policy must outweigh all potential benefits of ignoring it. Using his judgement. We should never applaud people for robotically following programming.

[–]TimMitchell 0 points1 point ago

If you're a professor overseeing a class with hundreds of enrollments it's often better to make a policy and stick to it rather than make exceptions on a case by case basis. Isn't the former way fairer anyway?

[–]inoffensive1 0 points1 point ago

Willfully refusing to accept new evidence makes things more fair? Is fairness about giving everyone an equal opportunity to succeed, or about giving people what they deserve?

[–]TimMitchell 0 points1 point ago

If the Professor has a rule that certain prerequisites are required then how would it be fair to bend the rules for one student? I'm sure there were plenty of equally impressive students that also were unable to attend that class for the same reasons.

The fact is that it's the student's duty to know about what is required for classes before they enroll. I've known many Professors that were lenient on their policies, which almost always resulted in them getting the reputation that their rules didn't matter. If this Professor gave OP a pass, which not all the other students in the same position? Might as well not have the prerequisite at all. What happens when ten other students knock on the door and say "Hey, you let OP in, I have the same GPA and a good idea as well, why not me?!". If he was being fair, he couldn't do that.

I'm not sure what you mean by: "Is fairness about giving everyone an equal opportunity to succeed, or about giving people what they deserve?". I don't see how the Professor isn't doing both of these things. He is being fair by having a policy and applying it to all students equally and without exception. There is no evidence here that he isn't giving people what they deserve.

[–]Harmswahy 1 point2 points ago

The OP does seem bitter, but hopefully that email will make the teacher think twice next time he dismisses someone who has worked hard to get where they are.

Even if it was OP's fault, one mistake should not negate the amount of work it took to get a 4.0gpa and put together that project.

[–]alis96 40 points41 points ago

You sound like an entitled asshole. You were denied honors admission because you didn't meet the prerequisites, and you have the gall to pretend you have the moral high ground here? If you were aware of the necessity of that class, why would you apply in the first place? And if you weren't aware, why wouldn't you research the program in the first place? Kudos on your success, but you're in the wrong here nonetheless.

[–]WillTheGreat 1 point2 points ago

It's UC Berkeley, most Berkeley students are entitled assholes. It's also a "ABC" 100 class, meaning its an entry level upper division course that is usually a "required" course for a specific major. In this students case the class should've been taken long ago prior to graduation. Most upper division course that are required (core classes) for specific majors normally list 100-104 followed for electives. Generally speaking honors courses are taken in your senior year or at least recommended since the college stresses the importances of completely core courses towards you major.

I have two theories. Berkeley operates a semester system, no way you finish your honors courses considering you need to spend 1 semester taking your XXX 100 course since you cannot take honor course and prerequisite courses simultaneously. So you wouldn't be able to complete the honors program in a timely manner. Theory 2 is you were an entering junior trying to take honors courses because you were under the assumption maintaining a 4.0 GPA in breath requirements qualifies you for honors. Besides 4.0 is nearly impossible to obtain for many students by the time they reach their Senior year at Berkeley, unless of course you're doing a very bullshit major like philosophy or any other 40 odd unit majors.

-Source: Alumni.

EDIT: In many cases honor courses are useless to an extent that it takes up the time you can be out there obtaining experience in the field you want to enter. If you are looking for employment or looking to obtain a post-undergraduate degree, experience will easily make up for the lack of completion of the honors program. Why? No employer wants to pay more for a person that is supposedly brighter to work for the company only to need to train them. 2nd most graduate schools look for students who generally has a good balance between work experience towards the field, grades, and GRE/LSAT/MCAT/etc. The good ones anyways.

[–]rotarded 1 point2 points ago

I am embarrassed to have gone to the same school as this twit. Probably the same kind of person that "occupies" Wheeler Hall.

[–]JoshTay 12 points13 points ago

It is those fantastic judgement calls that make colleges worth the enormous price tag.

[–]youregonnaloveme 2 points3 points ago

College is about status, not education or ability.

[–]ehr0c 5 points6 points ago

You should go to a better school.

[–]TuskedOdin 6 points7 points ago

honestly i share that mans opinion, because really, there is so little that you can't learn just from picking up a book and reading it. I'm not talking about books like the Harry potter series, I mean class room style text books.

[–]ehr0c 3 points4 points ago

Having knowledge and being able to apply that knowledge to real-world situations are two different things.

[–]TuskedOdin -2 points-1 points ago

that's when you take the initiative and try it out for yourself. ~_~ randomly make numbers for a mathematical equation it won't be pretty and that's life, post on reddit -there's your english class- lab equipment is available if you buy some, and chemicals that can't be purchased can be made, just ask meth addicts, there's chemistry, there are ways to learn things besides sitting in a room all day just to stress about a 4 consonants and a vowel.

edit: i r suck at grammar, and at editing.

[–]ehr0c 0 points1 point ago

Let me know when you feel comfortable flying in a plane or driving in a car designed by a self-taught engineer, being operated on by a self-taught doctor, or being represented in court by a self-taught lawyer.

[–]TuskedOdin 0 points1 point ago

I already do. Doctors call it practice for a reason, lawyers aren't always the brightest anyway, and self taught engineer, that's why there are safety regulations that they need to meet before it's sent the mass market.

[–]sluttyderpina13 -1 points0 points ago

I learned a lot more from books read for pleasure than from my overpriced college textbooks for classes that weren't in my major but were blanket university requirements. The thought that learning only occurs in books is foolish, just like the idea that you can make STEM classes more important and cut others without making the whole education system suffer. Politicians and administration have no fucking clue what they are doing. Neither do most college professors, because they have never taught a classroom full of fidgety k-12 kids, a class that requires actual preparation and classroom management. You can't lecture a class that is k-12 aged. It doesn't work. That's where the real learning is. Talk about shit you know, don't blow hot air up the ass of those who maintain the status quo to the detriment of the education of our population.

[–]youregonnaloveme 0 points1 point ago

I have learned far more than I let be known this way, as well from the internet.

[–]kungfoojesus 26 points27 points ago

Honestly, I don't mean to post-crap, but it's immature to send a letter like that. Congrats on your possible future successes.

[–]HitlerDidNothingBad 1 point2 points ago

I think its pretty bad ass. But not really funny so i dont know why its here

[–]billmalarky -2 points-1 points ago

But immature shit like this is why it's fun to be young ;-)

[–]theDestinedOne 14 points15 points ago

That must have felt good but don't you think rubbing it in his face was a bit childish? I don't know. It just looks to me that the professor didn't realize you were the specialist snowflake among what were probably dozens or hundreds or whatever and also you were (on the surface) less desirable than the other applicants(if only technically) so he culled you. If nothing else the professor has no respect or regret about turning you down and will likely badmouth you to everyone who ever talks about you to him again. But at least the bridge was pretty while it burned.

Best of luck on all your future judgement calls.

[–]Bruce_Bruce -3 points-2 points ago

Good one colleague of professor.

[–]Kahlas 13 points14 points ago

So you got shot down for wanting into a program that you didn't qualify for, then wanna get snoody when you do something that you're proud of? Why would anyone like this crap?

[–]CREEPYPASTA101 8 points9 points ago

Your success will be short lived because of your immaturity.

[–]CREEPYPASTA101 3 points4 points ago

Nikita is a dude, not a chick as I assumed

[–]ladyM -1 points0 points ago

Khrushchev, young one.

[–]BrianSpiller 7 points8 points ago

OP - is this really the most important aspect in your blog/companies history? You've certainly put me off using your website by posting this. I would bet the same applies to other people too. It just makes you look like an immature idiot - why would I take the rest of your website seriously?

[–]push_pop 2 points3 points ago

do you use facebook?

[–]limbodog 5 points6 points ago

You didn't use snail mail? You could have enclosed some pubic hair of indeterminate origin just for the coup de grace.

[–]pauldy 13 points14 points ago

You come off as a ripe cunt. Congratulations on the traffic I'm guessing the Obama campaign is paying for your hosting?

[–]One_More_Comment 2 points3 points ago

Now I'm craving some ripe cunt.

[–]TychoBrohe 5 points6 points ago

So... not being in the honors program didn't change anything for you?

Dealing with impersonal bureaucracies is part of being at a big university like that. If you value your project and want to manage your impression, I'd consider taking this down if I were you; it seems rather childish. You're going to need to get used to stuff like this happening.

[–]imgurbust 3 points4 points ago

that prof is a boss! POLICY BITCH!

[–]mcityftw -1 points0 points ago

Wellllll that is a pointless website.

[–]ogotrice -1 points0 points ago

[–]NoBackspace 1 point2 points ago

[–]Meedeepereed -2 points-1 points ago

I bet that felt amazing!

[–]One_More_Comment 0 points1 point ago

Where's /u/only_says_fuck_yeah when you need him?!

[–]Meedeepereed -4 points-3 points ago

He's the hero reddit needs, but not the one it needs right now

nice try OP, putting up this link to get more context so that while we are there we use your website

i like how you roll....ill give you 100$ for the site.

[–]I_have_a_Secret -1 points0 points ago

I went through something very similar and had to have an entire year wasted. I was acing my first semester both in extra curricular and studies. Was in the top 3 students going into the exam but before I could give it I was kicked out because of a technicality.

I begged them to look at my behavior and ask my teachers how good I was doing. They pretty much didn't give a fuck because my fees had already been deposited and they could kick me by keeping an entire semesters fees.

Now that I think about it that is the year which improved me as a person. It gave me the motivation to prove those fuckers wrong. It made me work so much harder for everything and made me extremely responsible making me calculate and evaluate every decision I've ever taken since beforehand.

I know many people wont be able to relate to your post but I know why you want to share it and I know exactly how you feel. Well fucking done mate! Your website is fantastic.

[–]Robotochan 5 points6 points ago

We won't relate to it because if other students follow the instructions, and you don't, is it fair to reward you over them? You may be smarter, but you can't follow simple instructions.

A 'technicality' might only seem like that to you, but not to those in charge. It's a matter of perspective.

[–]DarknessFallsOverUs -1 points0 points ago

You would have gotten in if you had just slept with him like he wanted.

[–]friendlyghost__ -2 points-1 points ago

You must post his response.

[–]Upvoted6 -4 points-3 points ago

Amazing way to gently let them down. I hope they respond with a ooooopppps....
