[–]PineappleBoots 109 points110 points ago

Just permanently fucked up my eyes.

[–]heracleides 18 points19 points ago

Did you see the color nablop?

[–]spartacusisaturtle 62 points63 points ago

Oh my word, that blue and yellow thing. WHAT IS THIS WITCHCRAFT

[–]bethmulligan 42 points43 points ago

it does not work for me! crossing my eyes does nothing!

[–]S1mple 13 points14 points ago

Me either, then I remembered I have a pair of stereoscopic lenses.

[–]bethmulligan 14 points15 points ago

I wear glasses and even took them off and nothing. Guess we are not special :/

[–]S1mple 5 points6 points ago

Just tested it without glasses and it works, the stereoscopic lenses still work better though.

[–]isoceans 15 points16 points ago

For me, the colors take priority over each other in a seemingly random order, like a gradient fade between. I don't know if that is what I'm supposed to witness or more of a total merger.

[–]nss68 10 points11 points ago

you dont cross your eyes, man, you let them relax (just slightly so that it slightly overlaps, you wont have full square-on-square overlapping)

the color is like a mixture of blue and yellow, without blending. kinda profound lol

[–]bethmulligan 4 points5 points ago

Why the hell does it tell me to cross them! Damn wikipedia!

[–]Searage12 7 points8 points ago

It means to make your eyes focus as if they were looking at an object behind the yellow and blue squares, but keeping the squares in front of your eyes. Try holding your finger up into your FOV, then look at the wall. You can see two fingers. The same thing happens with the squares, except those duplicate images overlap each other.

Language is fallible.

[–]ivosaurus 0 points1 point ago

No, it does mean crossing your eyes, because the effect will work either way.

[–]dumpdumpling 1 point2 points ago

I think either will work. It just affects which way the image appears to be projected. It's like with those magic-eye books from the 90's. If you "look past" the page, the images appear to come out of the page at you. If you cross your eyes, you still see the images, but they go into the page.

For this case, I think you just need to have the colors occupying the same space. I could be totally wrong though. That's just my speculation.

[–]ivosaurus 0 points1 point ago

Either way will work, you'll still get the effect.

Same way you can cross your eyes to see magic-eye images, the 3d effect will just be inverted; but inversion doesn't matter at all in this case.

[–]sgrodgers10 12 points13 points ago

You don't have the genes. Sorry :(

It's like the ability to curl your tongue, but more weird. Some people can see the blue-yellow, and others don't

[–]AdmiralApocalypse 5 points6 points ago

I guess I have those genes. I can't describe it past blue-yellow, but its unlike any color I've seen before.

[–]sgrodgers10 1 point2 points ago

Yeah it's pretty balls-wild

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

What is it? Green?

[–]E-P-H 0 points1 point ago

-Make part of them overlap.

-Once you do, try to see only the blue, where the two boxes overlap.

-Then try to see the yellow.

-Back to the blue, and slow down the transition a bit.

-Keep going back and forth between the colors, getting slower each time, trying to get a good long glimpse of the moment before one color changes into the other.

[–]Elvvood 22 points23 points ago

What does it look like to you? Within the near-iridescent shifting between blue/yellow as my brain tried to figure out what the balls is going on, I could catch a glimmer of something that looked grayish/reddish/green. That's the best I can describe it, given the fallibility of language.

[–]KryptosV2 46 points47 points ago

When they overlap for me I just get blue and yellow occupying the exact same visual space.

[–]palpablescalpel 25 points26 points ago

For me, it was a single square about half and half blue and yellow, and the colors sort of danced around each other in a clockwise motion. In between the blue area and the yellow area there was a different color, but it was basically just the gray/green that Elvvood described - hardly anything impossible.

[–]TimothyEUpham 2 points3 points ago

That's a perfect explanation. I saw it exactly like that.

[–]Jonny_Watts 0 points1 point ago

It looked "dirty" to me. Like a hint of brown.

[–]V1ruk 1 point2 points ago

I had it like you describe a clockwise motion. It was like the blue circled around the yellow, and then the whole thing just blended. Very weird, it was like watching your brain trying to refresh the colors.

[–]DUELETHERNETbro 16 points17 points ago

AS DO WE ALL.

[–]shanoxilt 1 point2 points ago

[–]rymlks 1 point2 points ago

I can see it if they don't line up just right, like sorta diagonal. I can't describe in any other way than the fact that it looks like yellowy blue.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I think the colour could best be described as [close to] periwinkle.

For reference, a picture of Periwinkle flowers: http://i.imgur.com/Qv6aS.jpg

[–]Yayme74 7 points8 points ago

If you mix blue and yellow together, you get a whole new color, I'm gonna call it Blellow!

[–]reddiculon 1 point2 points ago

That will sit well alongside grue and bleen.

[–]he_speaks_the_truth 0 points1 point ago

I've been calling it blorange this whole time, what a fool I've been.

[–]Firelord_Azula 0 points1 point ago

Damn you guys with your normal binocular vision. This is impossible for me, on account of my strabismus and amblyopia.

[–]fuckyoudigg 0 points1 point ago

It was amazing. I don't know how to describe what I saw.

[–]JRowe3388 0 points1 point ago

I just see a slowly shifting gradient that goes back and forth between yellow and blue. Didn't notice anything special otherwise.

[–]sniff3000 0 points1 point ago

i see them swirl into one another, is this what is supposed to happen?

[–]CheezyWeezle 2 points3 points ago

I found this easier. Just made it with Paint.NET, helped a lot. Just cross your eyes to where the pluses meet up. You will see Blellow or whatever it is.

[–]Uncleleech 0 points1 point ago

DUUDE.

Thanks

[–]Jonny_Watts 0 points1 point ago

It's awesome but now I'm seeing blue and yellow flashes everywhere.

[–]evilpretzel 0 points1 point ago

when you say meet up, do you mean on top of eachother? Because I can't get them to get close enough to eachother to do that.

[–]ImGonnaBeInPictures 4 points5 points ago

I prefer the name forbidden colors. (dot tumblr dot com)

[–]jerseyanarchist 0 points1 point ago

Fuckin SCIENCE!!!!!

[–]RockingTheRitz 2 points3 points ago

TIL, I can see an impossible color! Am I special now?

[–]-Tommy 8 points9 points ago

No

[–]RockingTheRitz 5 points6 points ago

Just thought I'd ask.

[–]IlikePez 1 point2 points ago

Like shading a yellow crayon over a blue one, with the blue being more transparent than crayon. The color was pixely, but it was yellowish blue. Hazy!

[–]utsavman 0 points1 point ago

that colour looks like a whitish dirty green.

[–]talkw 1 point2 points ago

[–]5K337Lord 284 points285 points ago

A combination of blue and yellow, I call it Blellow

[–]Randall444 312 points313 points ago

[–]RyFro 12 points13 points ago

I love Resse!

[–]da_man_made_of_bread 10 points11 points ago

Man, you're crazy if you respect anybody but Duey.

[–]Phoequinox 4 points5 points ago

You just disrespected him by misspelling his name, you bastard.

[–]Ronald_McFondlled 3 points4 points ago

what about malcolm?

[–]da_man_made_of_bread 24 points25 points ago

He was in the middle.

[–]Ronald_McFondlled 9 points10 points ago

oh, ok.

[–]kiji23 64 points65 points ago

I call it green.

[–]IcebergJones 56 points57 points ago

There is a real color like that, but we can't see it because of how our eyes are designed. There are special goggles that you can put on and it will allow you to see it.

[–]ledzep4life 30 points31 points ago

[–]classy_stegasaurus 84 points85 points ago

So can we get a picture of this color?

[–]AwfulNameFtw 183 points184 points ago

You are a fucking idiot.

[–]classy_stegasaurus 150 points151 points ago

I just realized how fucking stupid that question was. Thank you for telling me that straight-up

[–]s78 18 points19 points ago

but at least you made my fucking night with that question.....and subsequently I just realized how pathetic my life is. Still some funny shit though.

[–]Langly- 2 points3 points ago

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impossible_colors there is a way, image on page.

From the article for the lazy http://i.imgur.com/wmNth.png direct link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Yelue.svg

[–]jhra 16 points17 points ago

Straight to the point, beautiful.

[–]JacobCurry 8 points9 points ago

http://i.imgur.com/xD9ep.png
Go cross-eyed. It only works for some people though.

[–]LordTyroxx 15 points16 points ago

Or for those who are normal and can't see these colors combine, try this! You will feel special again! :D http://i.imgur.com/rWcYi.png

This one is cool too!

[–]OBrien 4 points5 points ago

While the first one worked for me, I didnt see anything that wasnt on the scale in the second one.

Fuck me. Goddamnit brain, get it together.

Also everything I see has a blue fucking circle.

[–]ballanumbersix 0 points1 point ago

Nice.

[–]matthileo 1 point2 points ago

I can't see white anymore. It just keeps blinking between blue and yellow

[–]Death_To_Your_Family 0 points1 point ago

It just looks like teal to me.

[–]Gary_the_Goatfucker 1 point2 points ago

I see cyan

[–]classy_stegasaurus 0 points1 point ago

Is it supposed t be a greenish-brownish thing? Because that's what I got out of it

[–]kiji23 11 points12 points ago

That sounds amazing. Seriously. I want those goggles.

[–]JackTrueborn 0 points1 point ago

So I just spent ten minutes focusing my eyes beyond this picture so that the plus signs lined up on top of each other and now everything I look at has a weird gradient hue to it.

[–]RepostThatShit 0 points1 point ago

our eyes are designed

lol

[–]PoopyMcfartface 3 points4 points ago

Whoooosh.

[–]CalcProgrammer1 0 points1 point ago

Well, I call it white!

[–]kaptinkracker 1 point2 points ago

Thank you for telling me the joke.

[–]16bitgamer 0 points1 point ago

This was the first thing I thought of.

[–]Zombiekill20 -1 points0 points ago

Wouldn't it just be green?

[–]IAmA_Alien_AMA 88 points89 points ago

I thought of one when I was really high. Turns out it was just blue.

[–]Jonny_Watts 8 points9 points ago

IAmA inventor of blue, AmA

[–]getridoftheseaward 49 points50 points ago

You just broke my brain

[–]GuillotineGash 18 points19 points ago

Shit I know this feeling. When I was little I always wanted to "discover" a new colour...

[–]dr_spacelad 33 points34 points ago

OCTARINE

[–]kebukai 4 points5 points ago

aka greenish purple

[–]aclockinholland 0 points1 point ago

I believe it's also reportedly slightly metallic.

[–]IlikePez 0 points1 point ago

I just posted that I have seen that. I called it Plurple. Octarine sounds much fancier. If you are driving with yellow striped roads for a. Long time, or are tired the that color "shadows" off the stripes.

[–]FrToddUmptious 0 points1 point ago

Ctrl+F 'octarine'

I was not disappointed. Upvote for you sir

[–]sorry_to_tell_you 51 points52 points ago

Do DMT and you will see colors that you could never imagine or explain to others.

[–]Elvvood 28 points29 points ago

In the most powerful lucid dream I have ever experienced, what I would later learn is the cosmic consciousness rendered reality before my...everything. It consisted of colors I can't even begin to describe in a meaningful way to someone else.

[–]nss68 2 points3 points ago

lucid dreaming is the most intense everything

[–]simon_C 0 points1 point ago

I never have that much luck with it. I can get lucid, i know its a dream, but i can never excercise the kind of control that others seem to be able to. I always seem bound (at least loosly) by the laws of physics.

[–]goblinpiledriver 8 points9 points ago

would we also taste and feel those colors?

[–]bharatpatel89 14 points15 points ago

in some cases most likely probably maybe

[–]clongane94 12 points13 points ago

most likely probably maybe

Glad to know.

[–]83alx 2 points3 points ago

Doing my third trip soon... I still haven't experienced the crazy colorful world of closed-eye visuals, but open-eye shit has been fantastical.

[–]CheeseBurrito 0 points1 point ago

My cousin said he saw his arm die after taking his first hit, and decided to take a second hit.

After that, he explained that he felt like he was being shot up into space, and that he was seeing his life flash before his eyes, like snapshots of his childhood.

And then he came back down, a few minutes later, and wouldn't speak a word for another hour and a half because he wasn't sure if he was alive, or if he was dreaming, or what.

I'm not sure all of that was the DMT though. He had already taken 2 hits of acid and one hit of E.

[–]aclockinholland 39 points40 points ago

[–]sbrick89 11 points12 points ago

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED...

My imagined color is a combination of blue and a wave length in the infrared spectrum.

[–]wojtekmaj 13 points14 points ago

Infrapurple!

[–]cogito_ergo_sum 0 points1 point ago

My imagined color is a combination of hot-pink and gamma rays.

[–]ShiningRayde 9 points10 points ago

256/0/0. Done.

[–]phunkyphresh 5 points6 points ago

I was thinking something like pi/e/i ....*shrugs...

[–]Logen_Zack 11 points12 points ago

Infinite doesnt mean almighty... all natural numbers without the "2" are still infinite.

[–]ShamefulHonesty 2 points3 points ago

this is the honesty i was looking for in this thread

[–]Eonir 1 point2 points ago

Me too. I was surprised I had to scoll so far down.

[–]drew_tattoo 6 points7 points ago

I read something on cracked the other day about colors that exist that we can't see and my reaction was pretty on par with comic.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Was it just talking about the non-visible spectrum? Like radio, infrared, ultraviolet, x-ray, and gamma? Or does it mean there are actually other 'colors' within the visible range?

[–]drew_tattoo 2 points3 points ago

I think they're colors in the visible range that our brains aren't conditioned to see. The article doesn't go into much detail or explain it terribly well but it does specifically say that "we don't have the ability to see them." Here's the link. I tend to take Cracked with a grain of salt but this one does seem to be fairly legit.

Edit: Forgot to mention it's number 4 on the list.

[–]DaSeraph 15 points16 points ago

Some people have the ability so see millions more colors than others.

[–]JacobCurry 4 points5 points ago

I want the test.

[–]lovehate615 1 point2 points ago

I'm really jealous of this. I wish I could see 100 million colors.

[–]throwawaymechanic37 4 points5 points ago

I'm color blind, tell me about it.

[–]Wazoisme 2 points3 points ago

I was actully thinking about that the other day. My friend ask me why I looked like I needed to take a shit.

[–]bongmaniac 2 points3 points ago

try 2cb

[–]half_entente 2 points3 points ago

Actually, Hume believed that we can imagine intermediate shades that may not ever have existed or been imagined... but that may no longer be true.

[–]BanterClaus 0 points1 point ago

He believed our imagination can only combine, transpose, augment and dimminish past experiences.

Further Reading http://instruct.westvalley.edu/lafave/HUME.HTM

[–]Texazilian 2 points3 points ago

I have tried to do this so many times! IT HURTZ!!!!!

[–]newtonsbday 0 points1 point ago

That's because color is just your brains interpretation of physical entity. There are only so many wavelengths and thus only so many colors. (extra simplified)

[–]B33rNuts 2 points3 points ago

I now pronounce the creation of Murple. A combination of Maroon and Purple. "...and their wine was a beautiful shade of murple".

[–]finallymadeanaccount 0 points1 point ago

Beaten pommegranite cuckold yellow.

[–]Octavepuss 1 point2 points ago

Even if we allow the claim “we cannot imagine new colors” to be true, doing so does not make the statement “Human imagination is infinite!” to be untrue. An easy way to demonstrate the limitlessness of the human imagination is to imagine a number- I picked 1.72. You’ll find that there are literally an infinite amount of numbers you could have imagined because there are an infinite amount of numbers. Does this technically make the human imagination infinite? Yes it does.

Perhaps the author meant to say “Humans can imagine anything”, which would make a lot more sense in context when it is being refuted by the statement “try to imagine a new color”.

I know I’m taking the comic very literally, but I find that when discussing philosophy it’s always better to assume the author is being as literal as possible because otherwise you’ll be arguing semantics until the cows come home. :P Viva la logicians!

[–]wheeldawg 0 points1 point ago

This example doesn't work out, though.

You cannot imagine a number. (inb4 herp derp what about i herp)

You picked 1.72 out of an infinite amount of choices. It already existed.

Seeing as humans have discovered all "seeable" (is that a word?) colors, one would HAVE to imagine one. Imagination creates things that don't exist, it doesn't look at an infinite amount of choices and picks one.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Goltork2 2 points3 points ago

Humans can see over a million colors

Humans want another one

We're ungrateful as a species

[–]shaftdestroyer 4 points5 points ago

Just because we can't imagine a new color does not mean our imagination is finite.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Mathematically you're correct, since there could be an infinite number of things we can imagine, even if there are also things we can't imagine. But it does mean that humans can't imagine everything.

[–]bottom_of_the_well 0 points1 point ago

The EM spectrum is way bigger than visible light. Plus the resolution of color probably has some physical bound (based on Planck's constant), but given the size of the EM spectrum (which is probably bounded by the size of the universe and asymptotic equivalence) with this resolution, there are more colors than can be counted in a human lifetime. So yeah, basically infinite! Suck my balls doubters!

[–]bodaciousbilly 4 points5 points ago

Can imagine what these colors look like?

[–]wootastic 1 point2 points ago

Try it and get back to us.

[–]dan10981 1 point2 points ago

Blurple!

[–]Ozzymandias 1 point2 points ago

Parmenides would be proud of this comic.

[–]kizzeret 1 point2 points ago

heres a new color borange

[–]tuore 2 points3 points ago

Someone listens to the Yogpod, I see.

[–]kizzeret 0 points1 point ago

Shit i was found out

[–]Bloodysneeze 1 point2 points ago

If you could modify your eyes to pick up wavelengths outside of the normal visible spectrum you would see new colors. Infrared and ultraviolet and such.

[–]visavismeyou 1 point2 points ago

Thendul, -1 nm.

[–]inertia186 0 points1 point ago

Magenta. Dang it.

[–]ZeeScarlet 0 points1 point ago

Shiny should be a color.

[–]Erkmon 0 points1 point ago

2 drops of lsd...wait about an hour then close my eyes...

[–]CyricTheMadd 0 points1 point ago

I am able to imagine thousands of new colors, I am not however, able to visualize them.

[–]benster56 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit... ar we reposting from other websites now?

[–]tonterias 1 point2 points ago

redditor for 2 months

Yep, that explains it...

[–]pwnyoface 0 points1 point ago

I'm sure that colors are limited by the electromagnetic spectrum.

[–]intelligentresponse -1 points0 points ago

Obviously someone with limited imagination created this comment.

One response would be to answer with: I have imagined a colour it is outside of our spectrum of vision, but if by some sort of anomaly you see this colour, you will gain its sight in all things.

[–]Xervicx 0 points1 point ago

With the human imagination, and indefinite amount of possible imaginative thoughts can be created, limited mostly by the information a person is able to collect in their lifetime.

A person can imagine what a dog looks like through a description of a dog. They can't imagine a dog if the word "dog" is simply displayed on a screen, though.

[–]qwertyqyle 0 points1 point ago

Cannabis green. Solar eclipse orange. Sour Yellow. Toilet paper white. Ect.

[–]Plethwhora 0 points1 point ago

Also nothing. We can't imagine literally nothing. My head hurts now.

[–]StickSauce 0 points1 point ago

Infraviolet. It required you to be able to see into both the infrared and ultraviolet spectra.

[–]someweirdguy 1 point2 points ago

Just imagined one, it was glorious

[–]vamub 0 points1 point ago

Yah wtf what a troll, clearly the eye is limited not the imagination.

[–]IlikePez 0 points1 point ago

Plurple. Purpley mix of purple and apple green. It's mostly purple/green with purple haze around/in it.

It's a color Ive seen reflecting off the yellow stripes when driving after a very long time. Plurpley reflective shadow stripes, like. I haven't seen it anywhere else.....yet.

I have just said the word purple in my head and hands so many times that it doesn't seem like a real word. No more real than Plurple.

[–]the_Male_Noggin 0 points1 point ago

For those interested in things like this (as well as others) read "The Doors of Perception" by Aldous Huxley.

It's a non-fictional work that details Huxley's experimentation with mescaline. He makes some very interesting observations, including claims that he has seen new colors.

Very interesting read if you're into that kind of thing.

[–]leliocakes 0 points1 point ago

[–]Shark_Lover1 0 points1 point ago

Simple you just add a bunch of colors together.

[–]IguanaBob 0 points1 point ago

This thought occurred to David Hume some years ago. As an empiricist, he thought that we can't have any concepts except those we gain through experience, e.g. through an actual experience of color. Although the famous "missing shade of blue" argument calls that in to doubt.

[–]Creyc 1 point2 points ago

relevant and I dare say a much more impressive imaginary color illustration than the blue-yellow thing

[–]YanYan1211 -1 points0 points ago

Why do people need to repost, this was here like 4 months ago...

[–]ColonelPanic1000 0 points1 point ago

Isn't fuchsia a color made up by our brains because of something like the color green not having an opposite and our brains like symmetry, so it was "made up" by the brain?

Stealth E: That is, not a color on the light spectrum.

[–]Guttermouth11111 0 points1 point ago

Try to imagine a new sound for a new letter in the alphabet

Edited a word...

[–]TroutM4n 0 points1 point ago

As someone who just started reading Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, this seems less difficult.

[–]Altilana 1 point2 points ago

As a synesthete my colors for X, W, and Z are not re-created-able.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grapheme–color_synesthesia

[–]joemundel 0 points1 point ago

Speaking of colours. people who see red what if it is really green but they have always know it as red because that is what every one else calls it. It could be any colour but just something to think about.

[–]hodgen 0 points1 point ago

Hume's Missing Shade of Blue. Very relevant. Basically if you look at his writings regarding epistemology in A Treatise on Human Nature, no, you cannot imagine a new color (even though hume thinks you actually might be able to).

[–]Nickrcward 0 points1 point ago

Blue and yellow.. I just invented this. Ill call it... Blellow!

[–]ThatOneRussian 0 points1 point ago

Look at the night sky in a suburb on a cloudy summer night. It's like...I don't even know how to describe it 'cause the color doesn't have a name and nothing else is that color. But it's fucking ugly

[–]WendyLRogers3 0 points1 point ago

I can do this!

There is an illusion created by a flat white disk with a black pattern on it. When you spin it rapidly, it creates an illusion in your brain of colors. That is, the cones in your eyes do not see a color, but your brain generates the false colors directly.

Importantly, this illusion can be seen by individuals who are completely colorblind, who normally see the world in shades of gray. They typically become transfixed, for the first time in their lives "seeing" colors.

But though you see colors that are sort of like colors you know, they are different, so need to be described with respect to themselves, not "real" colors.

[–]five_argyle_sox 0 points1 point ago

As a kid, when I first saw neon colors it blew my mind and I spent hours trying to think of other "new" colors (with no luck).

[–]enjoiabletaco 0 points1 point ago

Infinite does not equal everything, example: a set of all even numbers, goes on forever but includes no odd numbers.

This is the reason I find RGB palettes so depressing. We can see over a million colors, but they are all bound by simply being amalgamations of the same base colors.

"snake eye"

I can imagine a ton of different colors... but I can't draw them for you... or describe them. It's a catch-22 really.

Are you serious? This is the second time I've seen someone scam this guy's comic off as their own in two days. Shit is ridiculous. Here is the original that people keep fucking photoshopping. More plagiarism online lately than lazy studens in school.

[–]LoriStrode 0 points1 point ago

I can see it ! cool =)

[–]roni_size_ 0 points1 point ago

I can but I have a lot of imagination.

[–]appleofpine 0 points1 point ago

Murple.

[–]MHHH_SALTY_BALLS 0 points1 point ago

I don't get it. :(

Just because you can't imagine a new color does not imply that your imagination is not infinite. Natural numbers are infinite, and yet we can't find another natural number between 1 and 2. On the other hand, name any natural number and I can easily imagine a bigger number, and thus have infinite imagination.

Negative frequency.

[–]joeldavis 0 points1 point ago

Infinite != everything is possible. Without length restrictions there are also infinite combinations of the number "1".

[–]Kamoda 0 points1 point ago

The original comic for anyone wondering.
