Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Not bad. Something awkward about some of them though. Kinda like looking at a doll that almost looks real, but is just different enough for you to know its fake, so its super creepy.

[–]Solid_Snack 5 points6 points ago

You've stumbled into The Uncanny Valley.

[–]minibeardeath[S] 3 points4 points ago

Thanks, and I understand what you mean especially after drawing them. You start to notice the geometric shapes and then they get weird.

[–]djinfinity78 2 points3 points ago

good job.. try saving them as png for better quality

[–]minibeardeath[S] 0 points1 point ago

imgur only does jpeg... :(

[–]djinfinity78 1 point2 points ago

well thats not true

[–]minibeardeath[S] 1 point2 points ago

really?!? I didn't know that. I thought they converted all their images to .jpeg. This makes me happy, I will start uploading everything as png.

[–]djinfinity78 2 points3 points ago

yea i used to think that also.. png is always better quality :D

[–]Shallow-And-Pedantic 2 points3 points ago

Imgur converts BIG png files to jpg, if you want to keep the higher quality (and png format) you will need to use another host site. Which is why I use minus, it doesn't convert anything no matter the size.

Really well done!

May I ask you for a favour? I would love to see how you've done things in an original .AI file, especially mr burns or anything with shadows.

I've done designs like this one, also learning Illustrator, and I just feel that there must be a better way than what I'm doing.

  • Do you use stroke for outlines, or is it a dark layer beneath?
  • Do you do shadows as some kind of mask, or is it just a layer on top with a set solid colour?

I'm dying to know!

[–]minibeardeath[S] 1 point2 points ago

Actually the Mr. Burns one was me messing around with the auto tracing (its a very high quality original). I actually did the Frink one in inkscape, but its still the same process and Illustrator. For the shadows, I usually just made another layer with no fill on the border, and just adjusted the layer ordering to get the right look. I found it best for tracing to keep each line segment as small as possible so that if I need to change the order its really simple. All of the outlines are the actual strokes That I used as the boundary for the color fills.

I am working on another more complicated one that has a lot of shading, so when I am done with that I will find a way to post the AI file as well.

[–]ArmFallOffBoy 1 point2 points ago

That would be lovely! Well, I think I've done the same as you for outlines and shadows. I was kind of hoping to discover something that's as useful as Photoshop's adjustment layers or layer styles.

Did you do yours with a mouse or a drawing tablet?

I'm borrowing a friend's tablet and it really makes things so much easier. And its helping me improve my drawing skills (I'm an engineer and haven't taken an art class since freshman year of high school)

[–]ArmFallOffBoy 1 point2 points ago

A tablet.

I couldn't draw with pen and paper if my life depended on it, but I'm very patient and sort of molded the design in to shape rather draw it. Yeah, a tablet helps big time. I got used to mine by simply using it for everyday use, such as browsing, mailing and so on.

[–]minibeardeath[S] 0 points1 point ago

Which tablet do you use?

[–]ArmFallOffBoy 1 point2 points ago

I use a Wacom tablet. At first I had the A6 size, the bamboo, cheapeast one possible for about 2 years. I was great but finally died of cola being spilled. I saved up and got the A4 size, Wacom Intuos4 Large, which costs alot but it was still the cheapeast, decent tablet in that size range.

I honestly don't think I need that size, since I don't actually draw well with wrist movements.

You may be interested in these vector images of the Simpsons I found about 6 years ago.

[–]minibeardeath[S] 0 points1 point ago

Those are good. Some of them seem to be slightly off model. I was thinking I might vectorize the big panoramas for the simpsons or futurama. and maybe do some scenes from those two shows as they are my favorite shows.

[–]iffamies 1 point2 points ago

Giid hib.

EDIT: Good job.

[–]minibeardeath[S] 2 points3 points ago

having some trouble are we?

[–]iffamies 0 points1 point ago

Yes sir.

[–]sjhill 1 point2 points ago

Eeeexcellent...

[–]GregorySilver 1 point2 points ago

:D Please do more!

[–]minibeardeath[S] 0 points1 point ago

I'm working on them in the evenings. I''l probably post a bunch in a week or two. Right now I'm doing a very intricate one that is taking forever. Do you have any suggestions?

[–]GregorySilver 1 point2 points ago

Adventure Time! Regular Show. Street Sharks. :)

[–]minibeardeath[S] 0 points1 point ago

I dont kow about street sharks because of the realistic backgrounds. The Regular show and adventure time should be do able. Let me watch them first to see how I like them :)

[–]HotDog804 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for the new screen saver :D

[–]minibeardeath[S] 0 points1 point ago

Which one?

[–]HotDog804 1 point2 points ago

Fry. Really catches my coworkers off guard when the come around the corner and try to look over my shoulder. Luckily I have two screens and one dedicated to goofy backgrounds/screen savers.

[–]minibeardeath[S] 0 points1 point ago

Nice

[–]blankstare12 1 point2 points ago

Very cool

[–]SodR 1 point2 points ago

Nice, can this be done on the foul batchelor frog? I would like a hi-res version to have as poster on my wall but can't find any.

[–]minibeardeath[S] 0 points1 point ago

Possibly. Its much harder to make vector art from a real picture as opposed to animation. I might look at it later, but no promises.

[–]Sabrick 0 points1 point ago

Why not just live-trace?

[–]minibeardeath[S] 0 points1 point ago

Mr. Burns was actually done using the live trace. For the others, I wanted to get used to using a wacom tablet for drawing. Also, I am not an artist by any means, and tracing well drawn images is helping me learn the muscle movements and the splines for the various curves.

[–]queenofhearts8 1 point2 points ago

Damn- those are crisp.

[–]the_errancy 0 points1 point ago

Understand if you don't want to, but maybe upload the .eps or .ai file so people could print to skateboards, posters and whatnot? Good work!

[–]minibeardeath[S] 0 points1 point ago

Sure. What service should I use?

[–]the_errancy 0 points1 point ago

Mediafire is a goodie.

[–]minibeardeath[S] 0 points1 point ago

ok. I will upload them and add the link tonight or tomorrow morning.

[–]the_errancy 1 point2 points ago

Thanks!

[–]minibeardeath[S] 1 point2 points ago

http://www.mediafire.com/?3b4duyxjxyvizgl

Here is a zip file with the originals. Fry and Willy were done in Illustrator; Burns and Frink were originally done in Inkscape, and touched up in Illustrator.

[–]the_errancy 0 points1 point ago

Thanks!

[–]driftsc 1 point2 points ago

the good thing about vectors is it doesn't matter how large or small you make them. Convert lines to shapes.

[–]minibeardeath[S] 0 points1 point ago

That's true. I should've said that I made really big jpegs from vector files

[–]roger_ 1 point2 points ago

/r/TheSimpsons would love this.

[–]necromundus 1 point2 points ago

Needs more Zim

[–]minibeardeath[S] 1 point2 points ago

YES!!! I totally blanked on ZIM
