  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

The last time I saw this posted, lots of people mentioned that the ramp is a little too steep to really be conducive to going THAT far.

[–]The-Mathematician 22 points23 points ago

Its asthetically pleasing but it would annoy me to walk up since there's not really a "rhthym" that you can get into while walking up them, it would change depending on where you start. Not to mention the ramp doesn't have rails.

EDIT: Not to mention it seems like if it was busy with people on the ramp and stairs it would be a complete clusterfuck of people trying to go every which way.

[–]lordyjordy 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, it's roughly 1 foot of ramp for every inch of rise, and you have to have a land every 10 feet or so.

[–]Magnora 2 points3 points ago

On top of that, don't there need to be handrails for the entire length of the ramp or something? It seems like this wouldn't be up to code just for the lack of handrails alone.

[–]Bones_17 -3 points-2 points ago

1 foot for every inch of rise is a bit too steep, and actually doesn't meet ADA guidelines for accessible ramps. about 20 inches for every inch of rise is perferred, but I've seen up to 30 inches before. Also, the landing length isn't based on run length, but rather the rise height. A length can rise no more than 30 inches without having a proper landing before continuing to rise again.

[–]Bugd_0222 8 points9 points ago

As an engineer that designs this sort of thing, I can tell you that 1:12 is not desirable but does meet ADA regulations for ramps. Anything 1:20 or less is not considered a ramp at all. I am more concerned with the lack of hand rails.

[–]mirrax 1 point2 points ago

You are talking out of your ass on both the slope and landing. Here's the ADAAG on the matter.

4.8.2* Slope and Rise. The least possible slope shall be used for any ramp. The maximum slope of a ramp in new construction shall be 1:12. The maximum rise for any run shall be 30 in (760 mm) (see Fig. 16). Curb ramps and ramps to be constructed on existing sites or in existing buildings or facilities may have slopes and rises as allowed in 4.1.6(3)(a) if space limitations prohibit the use of a 1:12 slope or less.

4.8.4* Landings. Ramps shall have level landings at bottom and top of each ramp and each ramp run. Landings shall have the following features:

(1) The landing shall be at least as wide as the ramp run leading to it.

(2) The landing length shall be a minimum of 60 in (1525 mm) clear.

(3) If ramps change direction at landings, the minimum landing size shall be 60 in by 60 in (1525 mm by 1525 mm).

(4) If a doorway is located at a landing, then the area in front of the doorway shall comply with 4.13.6. Appendix Note

[–]Bones_17 1 point2 points ago

Isn't that exactly what I said about the rise height?

The maximum rise for any run shall be 30 in (760 mm) (see Fig. 16)

And my original post states:

A length can rise no more than 30 inches without having a proper landing before continuing to rise again.

Maybe you misunderstood me, or I you, but I fail to see the difference.

Edit: I now see it.

Also, the landing length isn't based on run length, but rather the rise height.

I'll leave the mistake in my original post, but I said "landing," when I meant "ramp."

[–]conversionbot 2 points3 points ago

20 inches = 50.8 centimeters
30 inches = 76.2 centimeters

[–]Monorail5 1 point2 points ago

Just think 1:12 or 1:20 inches or cm.

[–]-hyphen- 1 point2 points ago

It's a bot. It doesn't think.

[–]FriarNurgle 0 points1 point ago

Last time I saw this I reproduced it in Minecraft and posted it to Reddit.

[–]hambone10 20 points21 points ago

McGaugh Hall at the University of California, Irvine has a neat one too.

[–]Geoffles 0 points1 point ago

It is indeed a nice ramp-stair.

[–]Morgan1002 12 points13 points ago

These are at Robson Square in downtown Vancouver. I get very confused when I walk up them.

[–]M_Shrew 3 points4 points ago

One day, we will even automate our reposts.

[–]ladiesman2117 4 points5 points ago

True looks nice, but it actually is longer than just going straight , right? So kinda the workout stairs.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

Yeah, a 45 degree angle would be proper for somebody weak going up. 60 is better still I think, make them work for it!

[–]I_steal_your_socks -1 points0 points ago

They should get rid of the stairs - no need for a ramp then

[–]iGotChubs4You -1 points0 points ago

It's incredibly longer than going straight. Remember, the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. The length of this looks to be nearly 3 times the length of the straight line.

[–]justdoingmyjob 4 points5 points ago

That looks pretty dangerous, actually. What if they veer a little bit off-track? Down the stairs they go!

[–]airportstyle 3 points4 points ago

I'm almost certain this is at the Vancouver Law Courts

[–]Frumbleabumb 3 points4 points ago

robson square! right beside the law courts

[–]eagleapex 7 points8 points ago

Sort of. I'm sure most of the wheelchair–bound will be fine with it, but there are no railings. ADA compliance is crazy hard. It's like the government went "FINE! We'll make everyone put in stupid ramps from now on. You happy? But we're going to make it stupid complicated and super expensive. Nyah."

[–]dorky2 8 points9 points ago

I know ADA implementation gets really complicated, but there are reasons behind things like requiring railings. Ramps aren't only for wheelchair users; they're also helpful for people using crutches, the elderly who are less sure on their feet, people with bicycles, strollers, rolling backpacks, etc. And many of those people are safer if they have a handrail.

Edit: I forgot to mention people who have things like CP, MS, Parkinson's, etc. who don't need wheelchairs or walkers but have a hard time navigating stairs.

[–]eagleapex 6 points7 points ago

I know good ADA structures are more helpful for everyone. Like lever faucets and doorknobs.

[–]dorky2 5 points6 points ago

Yup. It's called universal design, and it's the most useful for the most people.

[–]eagleapex 0 points1 point ago

Have a preferred resource on Universal Design? I have one ergonomics book.

[–]dorky2 0 points1 point ago

I haven't actually done research on it in many years, so I don't remember my sources and they're probably outdated now anyway. The principles really stuck with me though.

[–]tomyownrhythm 1 point2 points ago

Not to mention the guy in the wheelchair that gets up a bit too much momentum and flys off the edge of one of those landings!

[–]Echofriendly 1 point2 points ago

ADA ramps are not complicated. sheet flowing acres of asphalt is way more complicated and just as common for engineers...

[–]eagleapex 0 points1 point ago

not to build, but to regulate.
Side note: Do you use GPS steamrollers to get the altitude correct down to the mm?

[–]Echofriendly -5 points-4 points ago

I use(d) surveys and software to define elevations.

side note: fuck you.

Edit: also the standard notation for elevation is in feet, with decimal places (I.E. 142.04').

[–]eagleapex 1 point2 points ago

I wasn't being a dick, but you are. I was really curious. Fucking reddit.

[–]Echofriendly -5 points-4 points ago

Engineers don't actually build things. So you're talking about ADA, but you don't understand what engineers do? your original assertion was absolute, setting the tone for all the following conversation. Your motives are questionable.

[–]helenonfire 1 point2 points ago

I don't want to get all word-police on you, but "wheelchair -bound" is not a preferred term as wheelchairs are liberating, not restricting.

[–]Arthur_Chesterfield 0 points1 point ago

According to another comment, the stairs are in Vancouver so they don't have to comply to ADA rules.

[–]IQBoosterShot 0 points1 point ago

What the fuck are you talking about? The wheelchair-bound is not the issue here, Dude. I'm talking about drawing a line in the sand, Dude. Across this line, you DO NOT... Also, Dude, wheelchair-bound is not the preferred nomenclature. Disabled, please.

[–]heyitzclint 4 points5 points ago

I would skate that so hard

[–]OGSofaking 0 points1 point ago

That looks a lot like it is on the campus of The University of Cincinnati.

[–]rocafella222 2 points3 points ago

vancouver?

[–]spazorama 0 points1 point ago

Yes.

[–]thekeanu 2 points3 points ago

Vancouver

[–]Brice0825 1 point2 points ago

Its called a "Stramp" its being used more and more by landscape architects. Its pretty cool!

source: im an architecture student

[–]BluesSecret[S] -1 points0 points ago

That has the word "Tramp" in it. C'mon, it's not that trashy!

[–]josawalk 0 points1 point ago

those look like they could make me handicapped if I didn't pay attention

[–]Nibas 0 points1 point ago

Having people in wheelchairs crisscrossing paths with non handicapped people on stairs is totally the way to go. no potential for problems at all. I like how handrails are for able bodied people ONLY.

[–]ZeroGSpaceCow 0 points1 point ago

Awesome until you roll off the ramp and down the stairs.

[–]Tuckzz 0 points1 point ago

It's called a ramp...

[–]NolanRoss 0 points1 point ago

Awesome tripping hazard.

[–]Lemonanyway 0 points1 point ago

Haha. I prefer the russian version.

[–]katalist 0 points1 point ago

They are part of the courts and Robson square designed by Arthur Erickson.

[–]time4anewsn 1 point2 points ago

Surprised nobody made any references to the old video game "marble madness."

[–]aplindsay 0 points1 point ago

Would confuse the hell out of a blind person!

[–]brblol 0 points1 point ago

too steep

[–]TheWillbilly9 0 points1 point ago

Not permitted as a means of egress.

[–]cXs808 0 points1 point ago

This doesn't conform to ADA standards meaning no handicap people should be using this as a walkway.

1) There are no handrails or guardrails. What happens when they lose control and start falling down stairs. That's what guardrails protect.

2) It's way too steep.

[–]Xenxe 0 points1 point ago

well we know this isn't in russia.

[–]tf2pro 0 points1 point ago

This is exactly what the front door to my school looks like.

[–]30percentAlpaca 0 points1 point ago

Or: How to make a quadriplegic out of a paraplegic.

[–]MrDoofus 0 points1 point ago

There's one of these in Serenity

[–]Dirtroadrocker 0 points1 point ago

These same stairs/ramp are in the film "Serenity"

[–]Mackinstyle 0 points1 point ago

That would not pass any modern nation's code for accessibility. The thought of my girlfriend using that scares the hell out of me.

[–]Chuckisbossingit 0 points1 point ago

This is at Sunderland civic centre if I'm not mistaken. Sure it's all fun to look at, but not to walk up and down.

[–]JacePriester 0 points1 point ago

Repost, and still a bad design.

[–]denixrelic 0 points1 point ago

We have one just like this in Vancouver, except it isn't nearly as steep

[–]bemorr 0 points1 point ago

except its the same one

[–]Grapehead86 0 points1 point ago

Neat, there is also one at the Confederation Centre in Charlottetown, PE Canada where I am from.

[–]NoahArky 0 points1 point ago

haha i was there skateboarding until i got kiceked off :(

[–]joeecenpi 0 points1 point ago

there's one of these at UC Irvine!

[–]JulesVerneFJ 0 points1 point ago

Repost and as a special info, these stairs can be seen in Serenity on the planet Miranda :)

[–]xeroyzenith 0 points1 point ago

I can just see the handicapped people getting in the way of the people walking up and down the stairs, but it's a nice looking idea.

[–]IAmHomeless 0 points1 point ago

This is in poor design.

[–]Bobbarkersmicrophone 0 points1 point ago

I remember seeing this set in a few skateboarding movies

[–]Chrispanic 0 points1 point ago

Haven't I seen that in a skate video?

[–]runaway491 0 points1 point ago

try to walk up while texting

[–]diggitydan 0 points1 point ago

I would love to skate that spot.

I think I submitted a similar comment last time I saw this posted. . .

[–]Jrook 0 points1 point ago

As someone in a wheelchair I cant wait to see more of these so I can die when I lose my grip and fall down stairs. Awesome.

I like when aesthetics are put above safety.

[–]Johnny8Balls 0 points1 point ago

That's at UVM I think.

[–]oneoffpretender -1 points0 points ago

i reckon they'd be quite annoying for us normos

[–]Siverix 0 points1 point ago

You're probably getting downvoted on the normos part but I agree that these stairs would be a bitch and half to walk on. Especially if they get slippery.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points ago

That is some clever shit right there.

[–]CornFedHonky -3 points-2 points ago

And they only take up 1000% of the space normal stairs need!

[–]djinfinity78 0 points1 point ago

sick of this repost
