I'm really glad he didn't end up punching them like those people who punch things when they get surprised.

[–]the4thbandit 108 points109 points ago

I imagine him being trained by the CIA to defend himself on reflex and that his daughter narrowly escaped an elbow to the face simply because she is short for the average assassin.

[–]Piratiko 59 points60 points ago

Actually, I'm curious about this:

Does the president ever receive any self-defense training? I mean, a lot of past presidents were soldiers and whatnot, but someone like Obama or Clinton or Reagan... ?

[–]Loanhighknight 50 points51 points ago

No way. I'm not a secret service agent, but I know presidents do not receive self-defense training. Presidents are surrounded by some of the best-trained armed guards in the history of the planet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week--the notion that they would need to get a knife out of an attacker's hand themselves is craziness. There are just SO MANY people surrounding them literally every second of the day.

That said, presidents (usually while they are still candidates) are given primers on how to behave and move in crowds to minimize risk, and they are briefed on what the Secret Service will do with them in the event of an attack (in most situations, I would assume that includes "us grabbing you by your belt and whatever else provides a good grip and throwing you forcefully into a car"). I've heard that a few presidents (Clinton, especially) regularly did not take the "minimize risk" advice, which I have to assume cheesed his detail off a bit.

[–]StormTAG 35 points36 points ago

Since you seem knowledgeable, what's the deal with Bush and the guy who threw his shoes then? I always wondered why the SS gave him enough time to throw a second one.

[–]fun_young_man 43 points44 points ago

It was a prescreened room of journalists, not a rope line. If you watch the video you will see they are on him in about 4-5 seconds. I imagine if it wasn't a shoe he pulled out something else he would have just been shot from a distance but given the threat and the diplomatic situation spraying bullets into a crowd of journalists is a last resort.

[–]ajniedo 25 points26 points ago

And Bush clearly had some training shoe-dodging, he had some skills.

[–]Pratchett 18 points19 points ago

I think it was the most popular he ever was. I was impressed by his dodgeball skills.

[–]tylerbray 7 points8 points ago

Probably not. Obama goes to the gym so maybe he's taken some self defense training himself, but for similar reasons the president doesn't wear a seat belt I imagine him ever fighting back would be the last thing they would want. The security and protocols in place would go far too deep for there to ever be a moment where they actually wanted the president to try to sweep the legs of the guy with the gun or whatever (it's not like he's getting mugged by simpletons here). You almost never want the victim to try to be the hero in these kinds of situations.

[–]Piratiko 23 points24 points ago

BUT WHAT IF GARY OLDMAN TAKES HIS FAMILY HOSTAGE ON AIR FORCE ONE!?

[–]SchpartyOn 7 points8 points ago

Wait, the president doesn't wear a seat belt?

[–]tylerbray 11 points12 points ago

No, there was some outrage about it not long ago because he was photographed not wearing one and that apparently set a bad example. I can't find the article I'm looking for which goes into some depth about the security of the president's ride, I'll keep looking, but the short of it is if there actually was a wreck or an assassination/kidnapping attempt then the Secret Service needs to be able to get the president out as quickly and safely as possible without having to worry about mangled seatbelts getting caught up and preventing that. The fact he travels with such security and a large, Secret Service planned presence on the road makes the risk of an actual wreck highly unlikely and not worth it.

[–]Munsta750 6 points7 points ago

That's a really good question. I would hope that he has been given some sort of close combat/ firearm training.

[–]elbruce 28 points29 points ago

I would expect that the training given a POTUS entirely consists of "hit the ground / get in the car and let us handle it."

[–]holycrapitsdan 11 points12 points ago

Or "Get in the fighter jet and take out that alien mothership."

[–]Laika_Come_Home 3 points4 points ago

Or, "They're here to make peace. Bring the doves."

[–]Piratiko 12 points13 points ago

I have to imagine, at the very least, Obama has laced up some boxing gloves and sparred or hit a bag a little. Or done some grappling with a trainer. Firearms, I'm not so sure. I really wouldn't be surprised if Obama had never shot a gun before.

[–]ihutch01 7 points8 points ago

Yeah for a second there he had a look of sheer terror like he expected a secret service agent to push him out of the way as a bullet whizzes past his head

[–]raoul_llamas_duke 2 points3 points ago

Yeah that pure terror speaks volumes

[–]JohnAdamZiolkowski 482 points483 points ago

That is the look of a man who thought he was about to die

[–]CityWithoutMen 531 points532 points ago

To a certain degree, I imagine most days are kind of clouded by that feeling.

A Sword of Damocles.

[–]DoubleDickDave 108 points109 points ago

huh. I had never heard of that. Thanks for the link.

[–]Genmaken 14 points15 points ago

You never played Tomb Raider?

[–]arrjayjee 11 points12 points ago

That's where I learnt it too. Thor, Neptune, Atlas, those I know. WTF is a Damocles? So I looked it up. And they say games teach kids nothing!

[–]OkamiNoKiba 16 points17 points ago

To be fair, you taught yourself, the game just made you curious.

[–]Phallic 27 points28 points ago

I only knew it from Oh My Lord by Nick Cave.

[–]BlackbeltJones 71 points72 points ago

You're supposed to have known it from The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

[–]noofus76 5 points6 points ago

I've got a feeling someone's gonna be cutting the thread.

[–]RustyWinger 4 points5 points ago

I always thought that was the weirdest line Rocky had, but now I know what it means!

Cicero asks: Does not Dionysius seem to have made it sufficiently clear that there can be nothing happy for the person over whom some fear always looms?

I read this in his voice.

[–]EHoffman922 12 points13 points ago

TIL. Really interesting read.

[–]Piratiko 45 points46 points ago

"OH FUCK I'M GETTING ASSASSIN--- HEYY BABY!"

[–]Crossfox17 38 points39 points ago

Seriously. If I was the president and someone snuck up behind me I would freak the fuck out and run or something. My first thought would be "oh fuck I'm being assassinated."

[–]lolitsricky 96 points97 points ago

For that split second, its as if he is starting to morph into a Voldemort-like figure, then goes back to his usual Obama smile.

[–]E3K 169 points170 points ago

[–]footcreamfin 62 points63 points ago

looks like he was about to punch her in the face

[–]Naggers123 47 points48 points ago

Don't be silly. That's what the snipers were for.

[–]Ag-E 96 points97 points ago

If the snipers are able to punch her in the face, they're probably too close to be a good sniper. Unless they're really good at no-scoping.

[–]Naggers123 152 points153 points ago

[–]Ag-E 14 points15 points ago

Now I'm picturing an absurdly large one of these stretching across the auditorium to smack Michelle right in the kisser.

[–]leekayfabe 20 points21 points ago

That is because he is a reptilian shape shifter from outer space.

[–]jsmayne 249 points250 points ago

I honestly never thought about that before.

Why does the president age so fast while in office? The stress of the job? That never totally sat right with me.

Being afraid for your life 24/7. Know there are literally millions of people out there that want you dead. And it only takes one of them to succeed. One slip of security at a big crowd gathering like that and that's it, you are done for.

It doesn't help that she touched his kidney area which is a classic stabbing place.

[–]cptNarnia 221 points222 points ago

That's kinda what stress is

[–]jsmayne 66 points67 points ago

I know, it's just before i was thinking more in the responsibility context. Going to war, the economy, making the big decisions.

But i think being alert 24/7 watching your back. Making those big decisions even if it means someone is going to kill you because of it.

[–]PresidentSantos 73 points74 points ago

Also the fact that he probably gets, at most, 4 to 5 hours of sleep a night. Plus all the travel, jetleg, and always having to be "on it" in meetings, conversations, interviews, speeches. I don't blame him for wanting to play some golf once in a while...

[–]9001monkeys 27 points28 points ago

He does get spare time, he hangs out in the gym for an hour each day, Lack of sleep would have him looking run down, which would not do well for his image.

Woken up often at 3am because of a crisis we never even hear about, probably once a week but im guessing hes not working 20hr days 365

[–]snoharm 8 points9 points ago

Man, if my free time was going to the gym I'd be bummed out.

[–]NotlimTheGreat 3 points4 points ago

I'd imagine sleep is really high on the priority list like you say. Serious lack of sleep for four years would be a crushing blow to any ones psyche to a very unhealthy degree especially given the added stressors that is talked about all over this thread of comments.

[–]tankgirl85 38 points39 points ago

Not only that, I am sure he has twice the worry for each of his family members. Edit:because my sentence made no fucking sense.

[–]maggiefiasco 17 points18 points ago

Look at photos of past presidents. Compare pre-inauguration to photos while they are in-office. Watch they gray hairs multiply and conquer, or the hairline just recedes as a whole.

[–]LEWD 37 points38 points ago

In fairness, their terms of office are often 8 years of their life, at the right sort of age for changes in hair colouration and location to be fairly common.

[–]yaywork 13 points14 points ago

That happened to my husband after we had our two kids.

[–]chewieconcarne 7 points8 points ago

As a father of two kids I concur.

[–]zyks 13 points14 points ago

You concur that her husband developed hair problems?

[–]iama_XXL 47 points48 points ago

Lack of sleep and the stress. It takes a toll on you physically. Like Michelle said, there are times he is up until 2 o'clock working and you know he is up first thing, like no later than 6. So, you have a solid 4 hours of sleep if you are lucky. Combine the fact that the phone can ring anytime of day and demand your full and complete attention and you need to make the correct decision the first time, every time. Then you have the little fact that you are one of the leaders of the world. What you do everyday has the chance to effect every person that walks this earth. Yeah, I'd think I'd age a little too if I had that much on my shoulders everyday.

[–]NotADamsel 28 points29 points ago

The only thing I'm wondering now is what kind of person not only wants this, but volunteers for it again a second time?

[–]lollermittens 22 points23 points ago

Power is quite an addictive feeling.

[–]Dystopeuh 45 points46 points ago

I've always believed that the best person for president is out there, but has absolutely no desire to be president. The second anyone thinks to themselves, "Yeah, I want to be president," is the second they definitely shouldn't have the job. Kind of a fun Catch-22.

Neil deGrasse Tyson said something that's been going around for a while now. He asked why everyone in politics is in law (with a few who were businessmen), and asked where the rest of life was. He asked where the scientists and engineers and the rest of life are.

Good question, sir. Now tell us: why aren't you running for office, then? Show me the scientists, show me the engineers running for Senate.

[–]My_Wife_Athena 9 points10 points ago

I've always believed that the best person for president is out there, but has absolutely no desire to be president. The second anyone thinks to themselves, "Yeah, I want to be president," is the second they definitely shouldn't have the job. Kind of a fun Catch-22.

I disagree with it. The idea that men who desire power should not hold power isn't a good axiom. The reason a man desires power is much more important. For example, if a young boy wanted to become president later in life, and his reason is a want to help those whom cannot help themselves, then I reckon that it is not a bad thing; on the other hand, if a young boy wanted to become president later in life, and his is a want of greed and fame, then I reckon that it is a bad thing.

[–]Omgwtf_hypatia 6 points7 points ago

You know, I actually read an article about this that basically stated that while the job was, indeed, stressful, it doesn't necessarily mean that a president ages faster or more drastically--it just means he aged four years.

And here it is. Thanks Google!

[–]pukesickle 6 points7 points ago

It is true. I also think hair color is a strategic political tool to produce a certain look for candidacy, and then presidency.

[–]DutchPrisoner 13 points14 points ago

You really think the president ages faster while in office? I don't know -- the last several presidents have lived pretty long lives. I'm not feeling like any of them lost any actual years of life. And I think the belief that Obama has aged a lot is just a perception, not reality. We've seen him age, sure, but we have seen all people on TV similarly age in the last 4 years.

Example:

George Clooney (same age as Obama) 2008 - http://www.justjared.com/photo-gallery/837461/george-clooney-critics-choice-awards-2008-06/fullsize/

George Clooney 2012 - http://www.altfg.com/blog/movie/george-clooney-closeup-sag-awards-2012-photo/

Obama might even have been coloring his hair 4 years ago and now stopped just to look older, who knows. Either way, his aging pace has not increased -- that's a flimsy claim.

[–]theyllneverfindme 6 points7 points ago

Horrible example. George Clooney is an actor; he HAD to "age", stop dying his hair, and gain a whole bunch of weight for his role as an average guy in his 50s in "The Descendants."

[–]PrometheusGodDude 38 points39 points ago

The excitement/thankfulness after seeing his daughter's face tells it, as well.

[–]Sakred 33 points34 points ago

Michelle squeezed his side, you can see the look on her face before she does it... This is a tickle attack.

[–]kalamawho 20 points21 points ago

Michelle Obama is a very smart woman and should know that squeezing someone's abdomen when they're not expecting it is the quickest way to get reflexively karate chopped.

[–]darkscream 55 points56 points ago

I imagine it was more "Oh shit, what building blew up now"

[–]Obsolite_Processor 7 points8 points ago

I think Michelle grabbed his ass.

[–]Einherion 8 points9 points ago

Looked like he was retching to me. In fear. Fear vomit.

[–]dickiebanner 59 points60 points ago

for that split second you know he was like "please dont be a secret service agent save-tackling me"

[–]NotADamsel 30 points31 points ago

And then he was like "O hai, nothing to worry about, it's just the three loves of my life!"

[–]The-Deliverator 365 points366 points ago

I like to think his first thought must have been "ASSASSIN!"

[–]XaroXhaonDaxos 407 points408 points ago

[–]chefmcduck 11 points12 points ago

They better be careful, he might bust out the Barack Bottom and the President's Elbow.

[–]dmdrmr 102 points103 points ago

I am sure that no matter what his achievements are as president, he will feel that these are his best 3. I was very happy to hear he spends dinner with them every night.

[–]Gomazing 59 points60 points ago

Thats one of his strongest political human assets I think. And rightfully so. But many undecided voters that I speak to bring up his human qualities as his most attractive quality. And I would agree, its very sincere. Along the same lines I also hear many people say "Even if you don't agree with his policies, he seems to truly believe he i doing what is best." He's relatable, and not in a Bush-I-Could-Have-a-Beer-with-Him kind of way. And yet he'll go out and have a beer with people.

Edit: Its bigger than politics.

[–]NotADamsel 18 points19 points ago

Even as a cynic, I think that he's done an incredible job making himself seem that way, while the other guy seems wooden and almost like a parody of the stereotypical politician (think Poe's law).

Seriously, though, I didn't think I would be voting (an Alaskan's vote never counts) but I might this time, if only to reward good advertising.

[–]amcrastinator 12 points13 points ago

I don't care about politics but I don't understand what Romney offers that justifies ousting the current guy. I like second term president too, I feel like they're more free to try things out since, fuck it, why not? It's exciting.

[–]ky-jellydonuts 14 points15 points ago

I was reading this article in the New Yorker, about how high-end donors don't feel they're being schmoozed well enough by the President, and it said "Some Washingtonians have complained that Obama rarely goes out at night or socializes with members of Congress, preferring to spend time with his family. Jodi Kantor, in her book, points out that the President is unwilling to miss dinner with his family more than two nights a week." So Obama's weird because he wants to have dinner with his wife and kids rather than beg rich people for money. Then we wonder why the only people we can get to run for office are sociopathic assholes.

[–]antocc 6 points7 points ago

"Michelle and the girls" ? What are you his brother-in-law ?

[–]jetmark 13 points14 points ago

"oh, heee-eeey!"

[–]Nizzler 15 points16 points ago

Wow, you can see the exact moment where he prepares to have his head blown off.

[–]E3K 10 points11 points ago

[–]Nizzler 3 points4 points ago

Holy shit! The terror makes his face almost unrecognizable

[–]larkable 135 points136 points ago

This really makes him like a human being instead of the President of the United States.

It's definitely humanizing.

[–]jonathanrdt 39 points40 points ago

I think the President is but a man, as I

am: the violet smells to him as it doth to me: the

element shows to him as it doth to me; all his

senses have but human conditions: his ceremonies

laid by, in his nakedness he appears but a man; and

though his affections are higher mounted than ours,

yet, when they stoop, they stoop with the like

wing.

[–]no_egrets 16 points17 points ago

TL;DR: the president shits.

[–]Avien 15 points16 points ago

The President graduated from Greendale Community College?

[–]Action_Pants 36 points37 points ago

I can't get enough of the adoration with which Michelle looks at her husband. Rarely have I seen a couple with what seems to be such sincere fawning and respect for each other.

[–]yuruku 31 points32 points ago

They really are one of the best couples, power or not.

[–]fizziebob 11 points12 points ago

Imagine if all five of Romney's 30-40 year old sons came up and hugged him.

Not as cute, is it?

[–]kvachon 2 points3 points ago

No, but if his wife did that it would have been cute.

[–]minecrafterambesten 9 points10 points ago

I'm sure that's exactly why they did it.

[–]beelzeboobs 18 points19 points ago

Adorable

[–]headoverheals 6 points7 points ago

"Geez, Clinton get off the stage and leave me alo...oh, hey Michelle"

[–]LocalMexican 21 points22 points ago

I keep looking at this and I just don't see the fear. Maybe I needed to watch it not as a GIF, but what I see here is Michelle grabbing him in a playful fashion (you can see a grin on her face as she approaches) and Barack being pleasantly surprised to see his wife and daughters.

But I see why it could also have been surprise mixed more with fear than happiness.

[–]JakeSteam 16 points17 points ago

I think people mean the split second of fear between being touched, and seeing who it is. His face noticeably drops.

[–]LocalMexican 5 points6 points ago

I see what you're saying. Not the reaction to seeing Michelle, but the wide-eyed look where his eyes are a fraction away from seeing them and he's looking sort of camera left.

Good save by him, though

[–]piuch 9 points10 points ago

It's easier to see when you look at it frame by frame: http://gif-explode.com/http://i.imgur.com/2DM2z.gif

[–]EarlobeAnalProbe 13 points14 points ago

I can just imagine the secret service guy's eye twitching at this as he weighs the likelihood that Michele has gone rogue and whether or not he should take the shot.

[–]kindlyhelpsyourevise 4 points5 points ago

Looks like he's starring in a gum commercial.

Question here. Does Obama know any martial arts / self-defense? I would think they teach him some form of self-defense if a more serious situation were to happen.

[–]JakeSteam 28 points29 points ago

If a president single handedly killed an assassin, I think the opposition would just hand in the towel. There's no beating a goddamn ninja president.

[–]JustMadeYouYawn 11 points12 points ago

That should be in the rules. You automatically get one more term as president if you kill an assassin with your bare hands.

[–]Pearsonator 5 points6 points ago

Even better, you become eternal ruler of the Universe if you kill the assassin with your bear hands.

[–]Endyo 6 points7 points ago

The key, however, is first defeating a bear and taking his hands.

[–]derpbynature 4 points5 points ago

aaaaand that's how Putin became president of Russia forever

[–]FlyingOnion 5 points6 points ago

I'm sure the Secret Service trains/instructs the president on what to do for various emergencies, but I doubt they would want the president to try to defend himself. That's what they are trained to do and the president acting on his own would probably only put himself and others in more danger.

[–]soapwater 4 points5 points ago

I feel slightly emasculated that his oldest daughter would already tower over me.

[–]TreesPumpkiny 2 points3 points ago

Honestly he looks surprised for a second but then genuinely happy when he recognizes his family

[–]thatguyjustin 5 points6 points ago

For a second there he has a look of sheer terror like "fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck I'm being tackled by the secret service aren't I?"

[–]Taggertt 26 points27 points ago

Fox news: "Civil servent mugged by a group of black girls"

[–]NittLion78 5 points6 points ago

I was expecting a scandal talking about the failures of the Secret Service to prevent 3 black people from sneaking up on POTUS.

[–]BetaThetaPirate 8 points9 points ago

OMG... he can get tickled too? He's definitely got my vote now

[–]apratsunrthd 6 points7 points ago

He likely farted.

[–]is45toooldforreddit 5 points6 points ago

Anyone else notice how much Malia has grown? She's taller than her mother here.

[–]IndigoRaven 1 point2 points ago

If I snuck up on Obama I would get shot. :c

[–]phhifan 3 points4 points ago

can you imagine if he reacted like that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_X22kHYCaI

[–]FromFrankie 3 points4 points ago

"Oh wow, this was totally unexpected. Wow!"

[–]DonovanDunedain 6 points7 points ago

What a great family. Just wholesome.

[–]Mr_Moogles 3 points4 points ago

Barack. They're all Obama.

[–]matviy 0 points1 point ago

He looked like he was about to shit his pants.

[–]smellsliketuna 2 points3 points ago

His kids are so big. I haven't seen any pictures of them in a long time.

[–]theLastRising 0 points1 point ago

Obama's face looked to have been caused by Michelle grabbing his ass.

[–]composedryan 2 points3 points ago

I envision a scream thats reminiscent of the vocal cords of a 12 year old boy going through puberty.

[–]FCBSERIS 2 points3 points ago

"Bill, you've had your time in the spotlight... Oh it's you guys."

[–]Oldanarkybob 0 points1 point ago

Dude you the president of the United states after giving a huge speech and people sneak up and start grabbing you. They are so lucky he didnt just start swinging.

[–]YeahMann 2 points3 points ago

1st thought: I'M BEING ASSASSINATED 2nd thought: Oh, ok :D

[–]thebope 0 points1 point ago

He really does have quite a beautiful family.
