When not at Burning Man, it lives in Berkeley, CA in an alley near the junction of Ashby Ave. and San Pablo Ave.

Google Maps street view. You'll need to turn the camera around about 180º--I couldn't figure out how to save the orientation in the link.

I used to pass this thing by all the time riding my bike home from the gym.

I've seen this thing out at Burning Man a few times and it's definitely cool. In the off-season, it happens to be stored near where I live. Occasionally I'll pass that block and see it stuffed in with a bunch of other storage, half-tarped-up on this teeny lot, and it kind of breaks my heart.

Ah yes, the Neverwas Haul. Beautiful installation, goes to Burning Man every year. They're based out of Oakland. They tried to make it steam powered but the steam engine just required too much work so they switched to diesel. Drives pretty slow but it's beautiful when it does so, and the inside is wonderful.

Also, their lead engineer lives in essentially a real steampunk house. He's hilarious when he goes to steampunk conventions, since he ends up wearing his normal clothes there and looks totally in character.

I was at BM this year. I climbed aboard this magical house on a cold night, munchies on my mind. The house is filled with detailed art AND a working stove where they hand out fresh baked cookies. Munchies managed. I love you, house.

I saw this multiple times at Burning Man this year, rolling around the playa. Really, really great art concept.

The last time I saw it, I was standing about 75 yards away, watching them take group photos of the captain and other team members. They were all in costume, it was great.

When they finished taking photos, I was looking off at something else. I heard a loud POP from the Neverwas Haul, then someone shouted "kiwi away"! A moment later, a stuffed (toy) kiwi bird landed at my front bicycle tire.

"Let that be a warning to you, sir!" someone shouted from the Haul.

They let me keep the kiwi bird.
