Nice, Hashima Island looks perfect for urban ruins exploration.

[–]IgnatiousReilly 2 points3 points ago

Let me get this straight: I click on the images and it makes them smaller?

[–]EngineF 58 points59 points ago

Isn't this that castle from Dark Souls with the giant raven?

[–]IndigoGosRule 7 points8 points ago

I thought it was the Tomb of the Unknown King from FFVIII

[–]amp811 13 points14 points ago

Immediate thought was Dark Souls. What a fabulous game.

[–]Heartzz 1 point2 points ago

Exact same thought.

[–]allocater 1 point2 points ago

Or Darksiders 1 the part with the lake and ruin in the center

[–]TheDarkDoctor 58 points59 points ago

[–]illmatic707 66 points67 points ago

I thought this was gonna be a subreddit about the box of DVDs in my garage.

[–]kyborgi 11 points12 points ago

Want to know what I thought when I found about the existence of /r/AnimalPorn ?

[–]Lottanubs 8 points9 points ago

I CLICKED THAT and it was better than expected.

[–][deleted] 105 points106 points ago

Does anyone know where this is?

[–]jamo133 5 points6 points ago

from the 2311pts link, someone posted this as a representation of what nature does to man's leftovers:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cc/8_-_AmStar_7.JPG

I've been there, the American Star, it was off the West Coast of Fuertaventura, I saw it just about when that picture was taken too, although I was very young (9yrs ago I think?), and I have the poster! But now, and since when I've been back on holiday it has receded into the waves and now lies as a pile of rust beneath the surf

[–]4DUCK2TAPE0 233 points234 points ago

Because something this cool should be reposted every once in a while. Not everybody has seen everything on the internet yet, and probably won't if it doesn't get reposted. That's how advertising, and to a broader extent propaganda, works.

Edit: changed reposed to reposted.

[–]Shinhan 107 points108 points ago

You should also note that most of those older reposts have the name of place in the title...

[–]LeoPanthera 45 points46 points ago

Where did he complain that it was a repost? I see no complaint.

The links are useful to read the previous comments.

[–]AdamMcFly 6 points7 points ago

Agreed. Hes replying to a statment that wasnt made.

[–]stoperror 8 points9 points ago

Blasphemy! One does not argue using logic on Reddit...

[–]buckygrad 39 points40 points ago

Sort - > Top - > Last month. You won't miss a thing. Same shit different day.

[–]ChronoKiro 10 points11 points ago

You keep using that word, reposed, I do not think it means what you think it means.

[–]Drach88 5 points6 points ago

Inconceivable!

[–]4DUCK2TAPE0 3 points4 points ago

Ha, didn't catch that. I'm using baconreader on my smartphone. I sometimes miss misspellings. I'll correct it.

[–]justapunkrocksong 4 points5 points ago

Note the question he is replying to. He posted that because the list also happens to answer the question.

[–]AxelCaprio 2 points3 points ago

Indeed. I've never seen this great picture.

[–]rozyhammer[S] 50 points51 points ago

Sorrento, Italy.

[–]Ollie84 11 points12 points ago

Does it never freeze there? Because those walls look pretty good for that age.

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points ago

Sorrento has a mediterranean climate, and as someone who lives in a mediterranean climate, it rarely freezes.

[–]Doxep 8 points9 points ago

You could safely say it (almost) never snows and the temperature is almost never below 5°C.

[–]Failociraptor 8 points9 points ago

The next question is why does there appear to be a moat around it?

[–]sleevey 91 points92 points ago

Often old mills have a wheel like a paddle steamer on the side of them which is driven by the flowing river. This is connected to a driveshaft which goes through the wall of the mill and drives a heavy millstone which is used to grind grain into flour.

[–]frissonaut 21 points22 points ago

This isn't common knowledge as to how water mills work?

[–]sleevey 25 points26 points ago

I suppose it's common to all the people that know it.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]sleevey 10 points11 points ago

Thankyou. I'm puzzled by the downvotes though. It seems mostly people are appreciative of a bit of interesting information but there are still people downvoting as well. It's a very neutral comment, why would anyone bother downvoting it?

[–]Lottanubs 9 points10 points ago

There are always going to be downvotes. Its like have a few Redditors who just hate absolutely everything.

[–]jiveturkeykilla 1 point2 points ago

How did you think an old mill works?

[–]Doxep 0 points1 point ago

It's the river from which the mill used to take water. Nobody said it's a mill, but this is called Vallone dei Mulini, Mill Valley, because this is a mill.

[–]e7t 7 points8 points ago

Except for in the title that says "Abandoned Mill".

[–]the_glass_gecko 7 points8 points ago

See: Rome

[–]dx_xb 2 points3 points ago

Half meter thick stone walls have a habit of staying in the same place, even with seasonal freeze thaw cycles.

[–]pellasaurus 7 points8 points ago

yep, definitely sorrento. saw this thing walking around randomly on the street in spring this year. it looks cooler panned out though.

[–]aeiah 36 points37 points ago

saw this thing walking around randomly on the street

wut

[–]Cb1976 2 points3 points ago

Nicely done

[–]Chuzzles 6 points7 points ago

I saw this too, back in 2008. It had more trash around it, though. They have some major trash problems in Italy.

[–]bananabm 3 points4 points ago

Eugh, I went on a gap year tour of south west europe in '08, italy was absolutely beautiful, until I was sitting on the small suburban train line going through naples towards pompeii.

ugh

fucking mafia

[–]Mesmerise 1 point2 points ago

Can you elaborate?

[–]vqt 1 point2 points ago

The mafia are paid to illegally dump waste onto other people's land.

[–]supermeerkat 2 points3 points ago

I knew where it was as soon as I saw the picture, as I've been to Sorrento many times. That mill is a few minutes from breathtaking views of the bay of Naples, and I've spent many a day with a bottle of wine and book admiring the view.

[–]ImMakingPancakes 2 points3 points ago

there's a whole string of similar ones like that just up the valley from Amalfi

[–]dstore10 2 points3 points ago

Sorrento, Italy. (south near Naples)

[–]Woogity 11 points12 points ago

Looks like it belongs in ICO.

[–]Shorkan 1 point2 points ago

Why is Dark Souls on the top and ICO down here :(?

[–]thousandbears 28 points29 points ago

I'm gonna minecraft the shit out of that!

[–]MeowNeko 5 points6 points ago

Make a novelty account and start minecrafting everything.

Man, that'll get you so many chicks... here on Redd- hahahaha. I'm sorry, I couldn't say that with a straight face.

[–]Rowdy458 5 points6 points ago

Just be sure to watch out for creepers.

[–]MattnJax 15 points16 points ago

Looks like something out of Tomb Raider or Uncharted.

[–]turnthepagekid 14 points15 points ago

Is it bad that I inadvertently read that as "Abandoned milf from 1866"?

[–]benk4 3 points4 points ago

Betty White?

[–]Titanite_Sparkle 2 points3 points ago

I read it as abandoned milk so...

[–]NishithNand 6 points7 points ago

Reminds me of Prince of Persia.

[–]Firenze32 4 points5 points ago

And then someone posts the wider picture where it reveals that this is not just somewhere in the middle of nowhere.

[–]Chive 6 points7 points ago

It's actually within the town of Sorrento and surrounded on all sides by buildings.

Directly to the north of where it says Parafarmacia De Angelis Dr. Fabrizia on the map.

[–]xauronx 3 points4 points ago

It's pretty interesting because it isn't MARKED anywhere that it's there. There's a strip of shops on this street that ends with a typical looking bridge. When I looked over the edge I was shocked to see that thing because I had seen it online years before.

Also, amazing pizza place on the same road.

[–]beerham 2 points3 points ago

"He's headed for the old mill!" "No he's not." "Let's go to the old mill anyways, get some cider!"

[–]SuprDuprSam 4 points5 points ago

I glanced and read the title as Abandoned Milf from 1966. I was expecting a hot 30+ white lady with a beehive hairdo standing on the side of the road. This is ok.

[–]Relay3r 4 points5 points ago

Wow, I know that this will probably get buried... but

This is a photo I took in 2006 (Deviantart.com)

I gather this is often photographed but I forgot all about it and was a bit of a whoa moment when I saw the thumbnail!

[–]CamilloBrillo 2 points3 points ago

Geez, this was under the BDSM midget clown nsfw post, so I read "abandoned MILF" and for a good minute I felt like someone not clever enough to get the link between old ruins and mothers someone would like to fuck.

[–]dragonboliero 2 points3 points ago

Wow great spot. It could be used as Dark Souls location :D.

[–]SpleenyGiglet 3 points4 points ago

I've been there! There are many more mills scattered throughout the valleys. Exploring inside you feel like you're in the Ocarina's Forest Temple. There are holes in the floors, vines draped down steep stone stairs, and the occasional lone hobo kits. Might have pictures that aren't terrible quality if people are interested.

[–]jhmartin 2 points3 points ago

This is the abandoned karma mill of reposts.

reposts go in and karma comes out, highly refined

[–]remote_production 6 points7 points ago

YES! My wife and I were on our honeymoon in Sorrento in May and I spent about an hour getting pictures of this. Someday we may actually get around to getting all those pics off the memory cards.

[–]Cuznatch 2 points3 points ago

I went there in April, stumbled across it and took many pics, meaning to research what it was when back in the UK.

Naturally I forgot, so I'm glad I've finally answered the question that never really bothers me.

[–]thatsgreat2345 28 points29 points ago

Not this picture again

[–]yorrick21 15 points16 points ago

I've seen it before too... but regardless, it's beautiful. Makes me want to visit Italy after I scratch together enough money.

[–]AWildSketchAppeared 26 points27 points ago

[–]pootastic 24 points25 points ago

B+

[–]CoyoteStark 13 points14 points ago

Dude, he's been here for a week. Give him some time.

[–]Skeletalbob 17 points18 points ago

A* and a gold sticker - (How did you draw the sound? It's incredible)

[–]DrDragun 6 points7 points ago

That sound is printed on your brain he merely awakened it

[–]pootastic 4 points5 points ago

I love you. A++

[–]mattrition 2 points3 points ago

It looks woollier than the original.

[–]pooterpon 4 points5 points ago

PUBIC HAIR

[–]JSyn25 5 points6 points ago

Zombie fort located

[–]plutocrat 3 points4 points ago

Some ghillie'd bandit will just CZ you from the nearby hill and steal your frank n' beans.

Woods better.

[–]The_representative 1 point2 points ago

That's a terrible zombie fort.

[–]barcelonaKIZ 2 points3 points ago

Imagine this at night :0

[–]TheSecretMe 1 point2 points ago

Not as spooky as you'd think. It's inside a little crevasse surrounded by city on all sides.

[–]iamleighanne 1 point2 points ago

This is so cool it almost looks fake!

[–]Davtorious 1 point2 points ago

Yea the camera angle had me thinking it was a miniature at first.

[–]Qwalme 1 point2 points ago

It's pretty scary if you're afraid of heights. The main road (that this pic was taken from) only has a small railing on it and then it just drops away right down to that floor. Vertigo!

[–]Harold_Grundelson 1 point2 points ago

I want to Urban Explore the shit out of this place.

[–]mattpenner1343 1 point2 points ago

Sorrento :)

[–]ienjoyfood 1 point2 points ago

What type of mill is it? Paper mill, saw mill, flour mill?

[–]Chive 1 point2 points ago

Flour mill and sawmill apparently. More info in the last paragraph.

[–]Urban_Savage 1 point2 points ago

Incoming zombie fortress comments/images/posts.

[–]KazaSatyrGlade 0 points1 point ago

Pretty sure I have been there in a video game except it was underwater.

[–]FavorHouse 0 points1 point ago

You are gravely mistaken, this is infact the Forest Temple, therein dwells Phantom Ganon.

[–]Yogpod 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of Minecraft for some reason.

[–]Stevonz123 0 points1 point ago

I read milf....

[–]bootlegger81 2 points3 points ago

Why do 33% of the voters on this picture not like it? What's not to like...I can understand not upvoting it, but what about it makes someone downvote it? Pretty new to this site (pre-Obama though so cut me some slack), and just curious why some people downvote seemingly innocuous material/comments.

EDIT: Just read a bit and appears it's a re-post. OK, good, now I got to see it.

[–]Gersttt 1 point2 points ago

Who's running around taking pictures of my house?

[–]dzamir 2 points3 points ago

Imagine if all the humanity will stop existing tomorrow... in two hundreds years the nature will take the planet back

[–]baconeater7 1 point2 points ago

Looks like something in the forest temple! Nice!

[–]leitz010 1 point2 points ago

Reminds me of Ico. Video games that give you the wonder of travel and mysterious places are of the highest quality.

[–]fer_ril 1 point2 points ago

it reminds me of the forest temple

[–]grumpygooch 1 point2 points ago

You sure this is not a halo level?

[–]ImRainy 1 point2 points ago

I'd live the fuck out of this.

[–]happylong 1 point2 points ago

Beautiful as it is, there is only days before Justin Bieber records a lovesong on that roof, lets hope it collapses on top of him.

[–]neogetz 2 points3 points ago

I was amazed by this sight when we stayed in sorento. Couldn't get over how just looking over a railing revealed it.

[–]Hap_Hazard 1 point2 points ago

It reminds me of The Wall from Game Of Thrones.

[–]Whiteboyfntastic1 2 points3 points ago

This will get buried, but if I remember correctly, this mill is pretty far below the street level in Sorrento. It's is a sort of valley that runs through the middle of town.

If I further remember correctly, the valley was created by erosion of soft minerals by water.

I have some panoramic pics of the whole valley. I'll try to find them and post them later today.

[–]theundiscoveredcolor 2 points3 points ago

146 years after people.

[–]Jta2u 1 point2 points ago

What out even though it's been abandoned there are mercenaries there. Uncharted 4.

[–]guccigreene 2 points3 points ago

this is the reason i joined reddit. this picture exactly

[–]3Phx 1 point2 points ago

Reminds me of Tomb Raider!

[–]aesthesin 1 point2 points ago

Beautiful.

[–]CVBrownie 2 points3 points ago

This is just as cool this month as it was last month.

[–]diddlefox 0 points1 point ago

I'd smoke a bowl there.

[–]floydcm 0 points1 point ago

Seemed like a great idea, then the asphyxiation kicked in........

[–]TychoBrohe 0 points1 point ago

Pretty, but I don't think it would do well as an anti-zombie fortress.

[–]mellysoup 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of Origin: Secrets of the Past.

[–]CoyoteStark 0 points1 point ago

Now would you be able to locate all the dead bodies in there, or would they already have been eaten and dragged through a demon portal?

[–]androidscantron 0 points1 point ago

oh yeah now this... yeah her take some upvotes before you go.

[–]jereluc 0 points1 point ago

So im stationed in italy t the moment... Looks like i know where im going for halloween :)

[–]Parolin 0 points1 point ago

Looks like something out of Uncharted

[–]Mr_Kzimir 0 points1 point ago

Undead burg did exist o_O

[–]jp_lolo 0 points1 point ago

that looks like it could be haunted

[–]marcomac 0 points1 point ago

I want to live there

[–]lukeman3000 0 points1 point ago

NOPE

[–]animalkracker 0 points1 point ago

uncharted

[–]jackisabanker 0 points1 point ago

destination for next trip to Italy...

[–]North101 1 point2 points ago

About 10 years ago, before my parents divorced, my family used to own a renovated mill near a small town called Poppei (on the train so not sure of the spelling) in (or near) Florence, Italy. It was completely surrounded by hills and trees and you couldn't see another house. There was a stream that went a long side it. It was just beautiful. We used to rent it out for self-catered holidays and then in the summer go drive down from Belgium (where we lived at the time) all the way down and stay for between 3 weeks and 2 months... and then not eat pizza and pasta for at least 6 months.

[–]Assualtnpepper 0 points1 point ago

when i look at this i sorrt of expect nathan drake (uncharted) to jump out of a window shooting, but thats just me

[–]GoddammitChuck 0 points1 point ago

Anybody else see m.c.escher?

[–]ToxicMonkeys 0 points1 point ago

I want to live there.

[–]slouched 0 points1 point ago

i can see why. it looks like a fuckin bitch to get down there every day for work

[–]nzghost 0 points1 point ago

Just remember to cut the trap wires

[–]moshbeard 0 points1 point ago

If only you could leave it in that state but somehow also live in it. Still, if it were restored in a sympathetic manner then it would still be pretty spectacular.

[–]craybutton 1 point2 points ago

i want to play paintball there....

[–]MiKill93 1 point2 points ago

Nature is like "mine bitches!"

[–]MoonButts 0 points1 point ago

Ah yes, I remember when a giant crow grabbed me from my asylum and tossed me in the shrine with a creepy guy by the bonfire!

[–]ClassifiedAsEpic 0 points1 point ago

this reminds me of prince of persia.

[–]megustatmsaws 1 point2 points ago

holy shit, for once I recognize one of these beautiful photos. I'm so proud.

[–]mickeysabbath 1 point2 points ago

That's my new home. I especially dig the pot farm on the roof.

[–]Lexdb 0 points1 point ago

I could so live in that..

[–]herle_the_perle 1 point2 points ago

No wonder it's abondoned...it got moss all over

[–]bluechartreuse 0 points1 point ago

I have the strangest feeling that I've played an Unreal Tournament map based on this mill.

[–]new_zealand 1 point2 points ago

How was this even built?

[–]adeadbeat 0 points1 point ago

Pretty sure I chased a man down and killed him here.

Being Ezio ain't easy.

[–]isayed 1 point2 points ago

Question: was this mill built in a hole, or did it fall down in a hole at some point in history?

[–]confuzzledfather 1 point2 points ago

Life, uh... finds a way

[–]totek1 1 point2 points ago

The sad thing is that a lot of old builings in Europe looks like this.

[–]coffeetablesex 1 point2 points ago

How do I go about unabandoning it?

[–]alexguorui 1 point2 points ago

This is kinda cool to live in this isolated place.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of Rapunzel's tower from Tangled...kinda..

[–]shades_of_black 1 point2 points ago

I am curious to know the condition of the inside.

[–]Radius86 -1 points0 points ago

It looks like the set of an Uncharted game!

[–]Tonerrr 1 point2 points ago

I'll see if I can find the pictures from my two recent (within the last 5 years) family holidays to Sorrento... We have pictures near this, its a sheer drop from the side of the road, I don't like heights... This gave me that testicular tingly feeling heights love to give me... I hate it.

Beautiful area though... evidently

[–]Ordinaryundone 0 points1 point ago

Looks like someone made it to the undead burg!

[–]sagetrees 1 point2 points ago

I was there 10 years ago and thought it was an abandoned castle. Tried to get my friends to climb down with me to check it out but they were all chickenshit :( Thanks for the post I've been wondering since then what that place was and still searching around for a few cool peeps to explore it with me.

[–]EvilClownMafia 0 points1 point ago

Isn't this the zombie fortress that was all the rage last year on Reddit?

[–]TypicalLibertarian 0 points1 point ago

Shut down because of market regulations. America will soon be filled with images like this.

[–]Offensive_Brute 0 points1 point ago

Shit even if no one ever died there, ghosts probably just moved in.

[–]papa_bear_uk -1 points0 points ago

Repost

[–]batmanofbaylor 0 points1 point ago

starts humming the main title theme from uncharted

[–]Fishwick2g 1 point2 points ago

Remarkable

[–]DoctorOctagonapus 1 point2 points ago

i remember seeing that when i went on holiday there. pity there's no way down to the building itself really

[–]biggyph00l 1 point2 points ago

I have a strange question. It seems like this was built into the ground. Was that the case? I can't imagine why, but I also can't imagine that the earth around it all the sudden sprung up and it didn't. Also, sink hole isn't likely, it'd be destroyed. Anyone know whats happening there?

[–]emilwest 0 points1 point ago

That's awesome. Reminds me of a creation made in Minecraft.

[–]OldByrne 0 points1 point ago

"C'mon Sully, through here."

[–]testoacco 1 point2 points ago

really nice!

[–]LarryHero 1 point2 points ago

I think its in Sorrento, Italy. If not, I saw one that looked just like it while on holiday there.

[–]Joystick35 1 point2 points ago

Oh man, this was probably one of the things I will always remember about Sorrento. It was/is a gorgeous site. You pretty much look over the side of a sheer rock face and bam there it is. I think my friends and I spent about thirty minutes just looking at it.

[–]poitsplace 1 point2 points ago

I think the remains of Great Falls Mill in Rockingham NC are much nicer. The kudzu makes them look ancient.

[–]thefishingbuilder 0 points1 point ago

Geez, that is just so beautiful. I want to live there. Reminds me of Paronella Park in a way. Similar design I guess. :)

http://www.paronellapark.com.au/

(just so you guys know what I'm talking about)

But yeah, seriously, that is one beautiful old building. I wouldn't even change one single thing about it. :) Gorgeous. :)

[–]Ktmack23 0 points1 point ago

Looks scary as Fuck. It's probably haunted.

[–]testoacco 1 point2 points ago

liking it.

[–]Arkonias 1 point2 points ago

That would be an epic restoration project.

[–]cindisART 1 point2 points ago

The earth always takes things back eventually. Very cool, and beautiful.

[–]TheMediumPanda 1 point2 points ago

That's almost 150 years of abandonment and negligence. We've been looking at houses here in China recently. I do believe we should consider ourselves luck if we find a house that will last just 10 percent of that.

[–]KernelFreshman 0 points1 point ago

Go touch it...

[–]eire1228 1 point2 points ago

don't know whether to be creeped out from hauntiness or amazed from coolness

[–]antxsupreme 1 point2 points ago

If we're posting really cool overgrown, secluded places I have an entire thread from /b/ of the exact subject with hundreds of pics like these.

I have a billion photos of this when I went last year. Reminded me of Assassins Creed. Hell of a drop though, one could easily climb over and fall to their deaths, at least 150 feet down, always wondered why it was built so far down...

It's funny, I have this same picture saved to my hard drive. I found it on just a couple months ago. :/

Is that mill haunted? I thought I saw it on tv in past. Not sure if that is the site or some place else. Anyone remember "fear" on MTV?
