You are NOT very FUNNY!

This is /r/funny

[–]librarianzrock 9 points10 points ago

OP should try /r/nostalgia :)

[–]TypicalRunOfTheMill 2 points3 points ago

The general direction and position in which you hold by saying your straight-and-to-the-point comment has much validity, considering the context the poster has provided; any past fuel prices does not warrant a post within this particular subreddit, regardless of the enormity of given differences in cost.

[–]pilsner407 23 points24 points ago

think that's from the early/mid '80's, because of the price and because of the "regular" and "unleaded"...there was a difference back then.

[–]JohnnyValet 29 points30 points ago

The difference was Lead.

[–]alfrednugent 4 points5 points ago

I thought they stopped putting lead in gasoline in the 70s.

Edit: i guess in 1990 there was an amendment that required all gas to be unleaded by 1996. This was a final step of a process that started in the 1970s to gradually limit leaded gas.

[–]mwalters103 3 points4 points ago

You're right. This is a repost from months ago the original was dated as 1982.

[–]pilsner407 0 points1 point ago

werd. It's been a while since you've seen "unleaded" anywhere. Everything is unleaded.

[–]acidbath2012 1 point2 points ago

Most gas stations still label their gas 'unleaded'

[–]wintremute 0 points1 point ago

I was buying gas for under a dollar in the early 90's (got my license in '92). I remember driving over to MO once because gas there was 88 cents and it was like 94 cents in KY.

[–]Scarynig 7 points8 points ago

I was driving for like a year before prices shot up. The good ol' days when I could fill up my whole tank for less than 20 dollars. RIP.

[–]whyrat 2 points3 points ago

I remember learning to drive, my parents gave me $10 whenever the tank was near empty and I could keep whatever was left.

[–]aortega22 7 points8 points ago

Right in the wallet man. That hurts...

[–]martellus 6 points7 points ago

Seriously? I view this picture, go one page over, find this repost already?

[–]caql9vin 6 points7 points ago

[–]kindeke 4 points5 points ago

As I live in the UK, fuck you...

[–]j1renicus 3 points4 points ago

Here in the UK, petrol is £1.38 per litre.

:(

[–]mtocrat 2 points3 points ago

which is $8.40/gallon to provide some perspective

[–]j1renicus 1 point2 points ago

It costs me about £58 ($93?) to fill the tank in my little Seat Ibiza.

:(

Edit:grammar

[–]Tyranicide 0 points1 point ago

£47 for my Corsa

[–]8_4_Schu 1 point2 points ago

$52 to fill my Mazdaspeed 3. Apparently I have it easy.

[–]Mattyryan 0 points1 point ago

Around £65 ($103) to fill my tank (fiat grande punto abarth)

[–]8_4_Schu 1 point2 points ago

Christ almighty no wonder public transportation is so much more popular in the UK and Europe. My gf just bought a Skyactive Mazda 3 sedan that gets killer mileage, making me jealous until I put my boot into the boost of my Speed 3. It all seems worth it until the next fill up!

[–]Mattyryan 0 points1 point ago

To be fair, I'll get nearly 800 miles out of a tank if I'm sensible. Am I right in saying that Americas speed limits are lower than ours? Our highest is 70mph, I heard somewhere that yours are 55mph? I could be talking shit though. Of course if your speed limits are higher we are going to use more fuel than you. If you stick to them :)

[–]wyvernx02 0 points1 point ago

65mph in most places on divided highways.

[–]mikarm 0 points1 point ago

Most highways go between 55 and 65, interstate highways go as high as 85 in some parts(maybe higher, but that's the most I have seen).

[–]8_4_Schu 0 points1 point ago

Ours range from 55 to 80 mph generally. Montana had unlimited speed limits for a brief period in some areas, but that's gone now. So far we have fewer cameras than you so speed limits are more of a polite suggestion to those of us with a heavy foot or a fast car.

[–]BrainPulse 0 points1 point ago

I pay around €105 for a full tank(53L). :(

(Edit: $134)

[–]Pro_Sauce 0 points1 point ago

But to be fair, Europe generally has much more fuel efficient, smaller cars as compared to the US. Not to mention, the daily commute probably isn't as bad. I've got a 2012 civic, getting around 31mpg city right now and I still fill up once a week because of my commute time and traffic.

[–]croutonicus 0 points1 point ago

But to be fair, there is nothing stopping somebody in the US buying an economical car, they just tend not to. I also find it silly how nobody drives a diesel even though it's a perfect car for long distances.

[–]therealcpease 7 points8 points ago

repost, don't steal shit

[–]ChaosOnion 7 points8 points ago

In 1999, I was driving a 1989 Ford Bronco. It was a great vehicle for a college student hauling stuff from home, moving in and out of dorms and apartments and driving bunches of people to the beach. Even at around $0.90 per gallon for 87 Octane (no ethanol) walking was a necessity on a limited, college budget.

Towards the end of my college career, I was driving a Hyundai Elantra station wagon. That was a much better for a college student. Better gas mileage, comparable cargo room (with a roof carrier) and who cares about beach sand in a Hyundai? Borrow your buddy's ShopVac and clean it out! Gas had soared up over $2.00 per gallon post 9/11, so walking was still a necessity. Oh for $2.00 gas, let alone $0.90.

Still...I miss that big, dinosaur of a truck. I miss not worrying about planes crashing into buildings. I miss dropping off and meeting people at the gate, not outside of security. I miss the wave of pride from the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Iron Curtain and the rise of the Information Revolution economic boom. I miss the sense of safety and security.

[–]alfrednugent 1 point2 points ago

1999 was great wasn't it?

[–]metarinka -1 points0 points ago

frankly that same sense of security (outside of airline travel) still exists. There hasn't been a successful terrorist attack since 01 on US soil, the wars we are in are embattled and long, but are remote and have no realistic threat of spilling over to american soil.

If anything we are safer, albeit the average american is much more aware of just how visceral and real the hatred certain muslim terrorist groups have for the US.

[–]whathassciencedone 0 points1 point ago

You are the reason our govt gets away with endless wars, domestic oppression and voter fraud. Thanks a lot dick :(

[–]alfrednugent 0 points1 point ago

I think we can all take part of the blame. If you are an American consumer you help exploit someone somewhere if just somewhat. We certainly all rape the planet.

[–]everyoneismyfriend 2 points3 points ago

i would jizz to get a full tank of gas for $20

[–]haux 1 point2 points ago

I would jizz for free.

[–]WeLoveKanjimari 0 points1 point ago

And what is the equivalent price in today-dollars?

[–]mikarm 0 points1 point ago

Depends on when this is from, some say 80s in this thread and others are saying 90s. If we took .93c from 1982 that would be $2.23 in 2012. If you go with 1992 then .93c would equal $1.52 in 2012. I just used some random inflation calc on the internet, tried a few and they were all in the same ballpark.

[–]uttercaution 2 points3 points ago

REPOST!

[–]ArizonaHawk 0 points1 point ago

DONT MENTION THAT! THAT MAKES THE HULK VERY ANGRY... ARRRRRRRRGH

[–]cboogs 1 point2 points ago

In '95 I remember getting gas for $0.84/gallon

[–]ElvisAndretti 0 points1 point ago

In 1970 we were in Louisiana heading for Mexico and found gas for $0.16.9 at a Sinclair station in the middle of nowhere.

I thought my dad was going to lose his mind. He stopped and topped off the tank even though it was more than half full. We were used to paying $0.29.9 in those days.

[–]thediefenbaker 1 point2 points ago

Anyone have an idea what the exchange rate was for Canadian dollars back then? ...... eh?

We are paying $1.33 a litre right now in most of British Columbia, which is around $5.00 a gallon.

[–]aridd 1 point2 points ago

In Denmark we pay around 2.2$ a liter so around 8.4$ for a gallon, so that is around 100$ for a full tank on a bad day. But I to remember the good old days, when it was only around 4-5$ a gallon.

[–]Guarder22 0 points1 point ago

Is the price that high because of taxes on fuel?

[–]aridd 2 points3 points ago

Yes mainly but also because the living cost in Denmark are higher then for instance in the USA, but then we do also have a general higher income, for instance the minimum wage is around 17$ an hour if you are 18 and older.

But it is difficult to compare just prices, because we might pay more for something but then we pay less for some other things, one of the benefits of higher taxes ;)

[–]bigskykb 0 points1 point ago

Anyone have an idea what the exchange rate was for Canadian dollars back then?

IIRC it was usually around 28-30%, but the fuel prices don't translate directly to the exchange rate because fuel prices vary regional and are taxed higher in Canada.

[–]snowlion13 0 points1 point ago

the earliest sign that i can actually recall was $1.12

[–]selftitleddebutalbum 0 points1 point ago

Is it just me, but every time you see gas prices in a movie you instantly can't enjoy it anymore because now you're just reminiscing about cheaper prices?

[–]deeloves 0 points1 point ago

Oil prices in the country I grew up in were $0.39 in 2010 and probably haven't changed much since then.

[–]Mrs_Mojo_Rising 0 points1 point ago

I remember passionately arguing to my father hat my monthly allowance needed to be upped to $100 when gas went over $1/gallon in 1997.

  • First World Problems

[–]jpeezy37 4 points5 points ago

Wait, your father is a hat? Did i miss something?

[–]mindsfa 0 points1 point ago

TOO SOON!!!

[–]thisdopeknows423 1 point2 points ago

"Did you hear? Gas is going to hit ONE DOLLAR per gallon by the end of next month!"

[–]glastohead 0 points1 point ago

when I lived in SF in 2000 I remmeber the local news interviewing some guy in a gas station about how he felt about gas being more than a buck a gallon. They were outraged - I guess by this stage their head has exploded

[–]SullyKid 0 points1 point ago

Yep, this one hurt.

[–]chrono1465 0 points1 point ago

[–]Dukeboy08 0 points1 point ago

I LOVE that shot in Die Hard. I had a long convo yesterday about gas prices with coworkers and I had to bring this shot up.

[–]strineGreen 0 points1 point ago

what is there to remember? it just happened.

[–]saradawn 0 points1 point ago

Soul. Crushed.

[–]shroomkween 0 points1 point ago

agreed =[

[–]Derpshiz 0 points1 point ago

I remember when gas hit $1.35 after 9/11 it was the end of the world. I just filled up for $0.89 just a couple weeks before that.

[–]chcltthndridn 0 points1 point ago

And everyone thought it was expensive then too.

[–]AA72ON -1 points0 points ago

What? Definitely not in Atlanta. During the 90's, well at least where i live (Atlanta) and in most of the states i traveld to, gas averaged at around $1.30 I'd say. I would have loved to have these prices in the south.

[–]unbalanced_checkbook 0 points1 point ago

Leaded gasoline was available through the mid-90s.

[–]AA72ON 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I just googled it, it said 91. That's crazy I could have sworn it was much earlier than that. Thanks dude.

[–]Tyranicide -1 points0 points ago

tfw America complains about it's fuel prices...

[–]Jacknuggett 0 points1 point ago

How dare you feed us this tease!!!

[–]danrennt98 -1 points0 points ago

SHOPPED

[–]encaseme 0 points1 point ago

Damnit... I remember when I was actually happy that gas was up to $1/gallon (from $0.89/gallon when I started driving) because it was easier to calculate how many gallons I put in the tank (my first car was a truck and the gas gauge didn't work).

[–]Sellout1138 0 points1 point ago

And yet wages have barely moved forward at all.

[–]lordsushi 0 points1 point ago

i shit you not, the year i turned 16 i got gas one time for $0.69 a gallon. Im 31 now and am paying almost $4

[–]ogre13 1 point2 points ago

The goddamned 8 is upside down.

[–]acidbath2012 0 points1 point ago

there was a brief period in the summer of 1998 where prices dropped from the $1.20 that was standard for so long to sub-dollar rates

[–]alexp5 0 points1 point ago

Makes me more sad than anything.

[–]PolestarX 0 points1 point ago

Oh please not this again.

[–]Decyde 0 points1 point ago

I remember gas at less than .90c a gallon towards the end of the 90's. Minimum wage was $4.75 then and if you account with inflation today, they do not balance out well ;p

[–]Devon64327 0 points1 point ago

[–]Milkthiev 0 points1 point ago

Two packs of cigarettes for $5. In NY. Now they cost $11 a pack.

[–]gmharryc 0 points1 point ago

Hey, who stole all the 4s?

[–]phi303 0 points1 point ago

the sad thing is when this picture was taken the photographer must have been outraged over the fact that the price went up 3cents that week

[–]JeannaW 0 points1 point ago

I thought I had dreamed this. I was born 8/14/1989. Gas prices were higher than in the picture then, leading me to believe that gas under a dollar was a pathetic dream.

[–]Elessar20 0 points1 point ago

Better don't complain if you're living in the US. We pay a motherfucking 1,70 €uro (~$ 2,20) per liter here in Germany...

[–]EvilGrimace 0 points1 point ago

I started driving in the 90s and it was never under a dollar in Southern CA :(

[–]ihasakiwi 0 points1 point ago

Only 90's kids remember...

[–]BobKickass 0 points1 point ago

We are paying in Germany 8$ per gallon.

[–]Jcm5 0 points1 point ago

I just cried a little

[–]moralnihilist 0 points1 point ago

That was only for a very brief period of the 90's. Prices were way higher than that most of the decade.

[–]xplodymoose 0 points1 point ago

i just died a little bit on the inside

[–]collincampbell 0 points1 point ago

:(

[–]speel 0 points1 point ago

And now gas is over $4 a gallon what the fuck

[–]lareelynn 0 points1 point ago

Supply and demand.

[–]Darchangel26 -2 points-1 points ago

FUCK YOU INFLATION!
