I was born in 1976 and I remember the 90's well. Fill the tank for $12 and drive with wreck less abandon. We used to get bored and just go drive around.

[–]layra96 8 points9 points ago

Cruising down the main drag on Friday nights with our friends, stopping at DQ.....those where the days. Not to mention we didn't have Justin Bieber so..you know...good music to boot.

[–]EatBrowniesDude 11 points12 points ago

yeah, Aqua, LFO, Right Said Fred, and Creed are all WAAAAY better than Justice Beaver.

[–]caveman_rejoice 4 points5 points ago

Justice Beaver. Now there is a shitty superhero.

[–]Tastes_like_SATAN 3 points4 points ago

Aqua? You take that back.

[–]Solarnynja -3 points-2 points ago

Main drag. Ha ha.

[–]gl77 1 point2 points ago

Driving around in my '82 Cutlass Supreme, 350 V-8 rumbling through glasspack mufflers, stereo blasting AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, or Nine Inch Nails yea those were the days. Until the Internet came along and all of a sudden no one was hanging out at any of the local hangout spots downtown anymore.

[–]layra96 7 points8 points ago

That....you see that....i used to fill up about every two days after delivering pizza on premium gas and pay under $20.00 my tips each day would pay for my gas. Lets make that happen again.

[–]roastedbagel 17 points18 points ago

Cue all the kids born in the early 90's to pretend like they remember this.

[–]InterwebCeleb 16 points17 points ago

I was born in '86 and the prices just broke $1 when I got my license.

[–]DorkJedi 7 points8 points ago

re-broke. they hit $1 in 1978 during the gas crisis. It hovered above and below a dollar form there on till the early 90's, with a huge dip into the .85 range about 1993 for some reason.

[–]InterwebCeleb 5 points6 points ago

Correct. I was speaking in terms of the recent trend of ever increasing fuel prices, but you are absolutely correct in what you said. Not sure why you got downvoted.

[–]jmad202 0 points1 point ago

Used to cost me $15 to fill my tank when I first got my license.

[–]InterwebCeleb 1 point2 points ago

I remember being able to go in, hand them $5 for a semi-fill and not being laughed at.

[–]Alexithymia 2 points3 points ago

Born in 92, the cheapest gas price I remember was $1.50.

[–]chrisman01 0 points1 point ago

I was born '91 and remember when my parents were complaining about gas going over .85 cents.

If they only knew back then...

[–]CptSarcasm 13 points14 points ago

Wow... as a teenager right now this makes me very sad

[–]Dubbys[S] 16 points17 points ago

[–]Cseal 4 points5 points ago

What as the original o.O?

[–]phunbabag -4 points-3 points ago

was*

[–]VordLader 6 points7 points ago

Probably a red cup.

[–]Havokk 3 points4 points ago

i once filled my gas tank with a ten dollar bill and had change...

[–]ionataan 1 point2 points ago

You still have one of the lowest gas prices, comparing to those in the EU, and you're still complaining...You should come and drive your muscle car here,, to see how that feels like.

[–]ScubaSteve12345 2 points3 points ago

It would probably get stuck between two of your buildings.

[–]ChickaloonCharlie 2 points3 points ago

Our average commutes would likely span one of your average countries.

[–]mycroftxxx42 0 points1 point ago

Not just that, but minimum wage was about $5-ish at this time. When you get a minute, go shiv a random successful-looking Baby Boomer. You'll feel better.

Edit: The Baby Boomers didn't directly effect gasoline prices - they encouraged the economies of south and east asia, which is the actual reason gas prices are higher in comparison to wages.

[–]IamGrimReefer 3 points4 points ago

i always got a sense of satisfaction from pumping 15 gallons of gas and paying less than 15 dollars.

[–]marvk 3 points4 points ago

Your todays prices are still rediculously low to the EU prices:

USA:

Price per gallon of premium gasoline: $3.75
Price change since last quarter: -11%
Most-expensive-gas rank: #49

Americans have little to complain about. They pay less than half the European price for gasoline and $1.15 per gallon below the world average.

Germany:

Price per gallon of premium gasoline: $7.74
Price change since last quarter: -9.5%
Most-expensive-gas rank: #13

A German driver filling the 55-liter (14.5-gallon) tank of Europe's most popular car, Volkswagen's Golf hatchback, pays $112.23, compared with $54.38 for the same fill-up in the U.S. The average cost of gasoline at the pump in Europe is more than double the price in the U.S.

Norway:

Price per gallon of premium gasoline: $10.12
Price change since last quarter: +4.4%
Most-expensive-gas rank: #1

Norway is the only major oil producer with expensive gas. In the last quarter, the world's most valued gas got even pricier.

[–]Malhavik 1 point2 points ago

We also have to travel much farther in day to day life with less access to any mass transit.

[–]gr8whtd0pe 5 points6 points ago

Great music, low gas prices and the birth of the pc and Internet.

Those were the days.

[–]chewb 1 point2 points ago

the dial-up days

[–]gr8whtd0pe 1 point2 points ago

Ah yes. You finally get the one dirty pic to finally almost load and someone picks up the phone.

[–]shoeler 2 points3 points ago

$1.43 in today's money, btw. Low, but not insanely low.

[–]CreauxTeeRhobat 2 points3 points ago

I remember when my parents had a suburban with a 40-gal tank (2x20gal, one on each side). It would take less than $40 to fill it up, back in the early '90s. Then we had a long string of station wagons with similar tank sizes (in the 20+ range)... still, the thing was, "Just put $5 in..." And that would still last quite a while.

Now, I fill up my little Saturn with a 12 gallon tank for ~$45 for 10-11 gallons... I'm still trying to build a time machine.

[–]HapHapperblab 2 points3 points ago

As an Australian looking at that picture...

Why do you have a decimal place and a fraction?

[–]Jumpinjer 3 points4 points ago

That's the way gas prices are in the US. Dollar amount $x.xx always followed by 9/10, which is 9/10s of a cent. So, the regular price in the pic, says .79 9/10, which makes it $0.799 per gallon. Don't ask me why they do it this way, I don't know.

[–]HapHapperblab 1 point2 points ago

Thanks but this just raises further questions...

Why show it as .79 9/10 instead of .799?

Why have the .009 extra at the end, as in why not round up?

[–]dzkn 1 point2 points ago

Because it seems cheaper. That's why shitloads of stuff is priced x.99

[–]LetMeBe_Frank 0 points1 point ago

The 9/10 on gas prices doesn't get noticed as much. I know it's there, but it doesn't matter and I forget about it. I think mixed fractions are harder to put into comparable terms. Which is bigger, a 17/32 socket or a .531? 9/10 is much simpler than 17/32, but it's the same effect in my opinion. As a US engineering student and car enthusiast, so I deal with wrench fractions often. I still can't mix the numbers without a calculator.

[–]GenkiElite 0 points1 point ago

I hate how they always mother fuck ya with that 9/10 cent bs. Can we just round it up for fuck sakes?

[–]dzkn 0 points1 point ago

They're not idiots who do it for no reason. They make more money because of it.

[–]ratterbu 2 points3 points ago

I'd give anything to pay those prices today.

[–]pseudolobster 18 points19 points ago

Except money.

[–]DorkJedi 5 points6 points ago

Leaded gas ("regular") was ended in the late 80's.

You are a decade off.

[–]chihuahuaphil 6 points7 points ago

Leaded gas was legal until the end of 95, though most stations discontinued it long before that.

[–]StonePaleAle 2 points3 points ago

Yep. I was able to put regular in my 65 until about 94 or 95. Ran fine on unleaded afterward. Just put in some additive from time to time.

[–]DorkJedi 0 points1 point ago

My 66 IH Scout has spent it's life on unleaded with not a hitch or issue. Bought it in 92. I have seen the additives, but never saw a need for them. The problems they fix never existed for me. Same with my 70 Bronco, though it's only 5 years in my stable.

[–]jodes 3 points4 points ago

My dad used to own a petrol station, and when I worked there at the age of 15, prices were $0.35/litre.

[–]jkpritchard 7 points8 points ago

Litres? Where? In Iran?

[–]richhend[!] 2 points3 points ago

Canada

[–]jodes 0 points1 point ago

Australia...oh and I should point out, this was around 1984.

[–]JavaLSU 3 points4 points ago

Good times. I still remember filling my tank with a $10 bill.

I love the fact that there isn't even a spot for the dollar amount.

[–]BlastMeBagpipes 5 points6 points ago

'90s. It's not possessive. :(

[–]Dubbys[S] 2 points3 points ago

Thanks.

[–]GodHatesChristians -1 points0 points ago

CD's

[–]gl77 -3 points-2 points ago

90's. Because who gives a fuck?

[–]ChickaloonCharlie 1 point2 points ago

I have zero fuck's to give

[–]djheadshot 2 points3 points ago

Fuck you. Now I'm sad. Asshole.

[–]ChubbyChecker 0 points1 point ago

TIL inflation

[–]elementalist467 0 points1 point ago

The increase is more than simple inflation. Growth in demand has outstripped growth in supply.

[–]chewb 5 points6 points ago

ehm, no. Just the petrol companies monopoly price fixing. They wouldn't keep closing the refineries if there was an actual shortage. They pretend there's a shortage then use any excuse (hurricanes, wars, accidents) to boost prices. Then they 'forget' to lower them. Has been going on for the past decade. Record profits FTW

an article on refineries closing

Gashole is a documentary touching on this. You can also watch it on Hulu if you're in the States

[–]somethingcool 2 points3 points ago

I'd always heard the legends, but I never knew it was true!

[–]floppypond 1 point2 points ago

Good, here's hoping they continue to skyrocket.

The sooner no one can afford gas, the sooner alternatives will be plentiful.

[–]Nightfalls 1 point2 points ago

The sooner Africans run out of food, the sooner they'll find an alternative to food!

The sooner the major ISPs conglomerate into a single entity and put us all on "plans" like satellite, the sooner we'll have fast, cheap internet!

Alternatives become plentiful when they're easy to produce, inexpensive, and viable.

Like many, many others, I'd love to trade in my PT Cruiser for a 300 mile range Tesla. If it cost roughly the same, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

It's not as though demand for the Tesla is anything less than incredible as it is. The company can't produce enough cars to keep up with the demand. There are millions of Americans that would love to switch from fuel to efficient electric vehicles for regular commutes. Raising the price of gasoline might trickle in a few thousand more, but the demand is already here. The problem is the supply, and higher gas prices aren't going to increase the supply any.

[–]Cseal 1 point2 points ago

The cheapest i ever saw was .99 per gallon in california then again i never really bothered looking at the prices back then

[–]flipfontaine 0 points1 point ago

I remember when my dad bought a SUV when I was a wee little lad and I could not believe it cost almost $30 to fill up... :'(

[–]uptokent 1 point2 points ago

People don't believe me that when I started driving I could fill up my 26 gallon tank for about 20 bucks.

[–]jermh 1 point2 points ago

Thank you 9/11

[–]Dubbys[S] -1 points0 points ago

[–]brewmaster5 1 point2 points ago

A tear just trickled down my cheek.

[–]aitbri 0 points1 point ago

I graduated in '94 that summer my girlfriend and I drove from Pittsburgh, Pa to Orlando, Fl. It's was right around 1000 miles, 18 hrs, and cost $45.

[–]Sumpm 1 point2 points ago

I used to fill up my Honda Civic with premium for less than $8 for a full tank. That would last me for 2 weeks.

[–]damaxoh 0 points1 point ago

Chinese people wanna drive their big ass trucks, too!

[–]liberty4u2 0 points1 point ago

The government devaluation of the USD. Spend spend spend print print print.

[–]boringdude00 0 points1 point ago

Yup, that's the reason. It has nothing to do with instability in oil producing countries, or the last 15 years of third world industrialization, or the ridiculous commutes spawned urban sprawl that came from low gas prices causing more gasoline usage in turn causing higher prices. Everything is always 'cause the government is no longer on the gold standard.

[–]texan01 0 points1 point ago

Yup a $20 could fill the tank on my 14mpg 1976 Chevelle and still have enough left over for a soft drink.

Now it's $70 to fill the same tank.

[–]Worlds_Best_Coffee 0 points1 point ago

I tell kids, "I started driving in 1996, and put more than half a tank of gas into my car with a $5 bill."

[–]TBTrpt3 0 points1 point ago

I bought a car in the 90s... and my brother in law \ cars salesman told me that I should get premium gas every 10 fill-ups because, "it costs hardly anything anyway, and it is probably good for your engine."

The 90s sure where a good time.

[–]akuzin 1 point2 points ago

I only see one price in the 90's, the rest is in 70's and 80's

[–]scottvr4 0 points1 point ago

Ha! Someone's getting fired!! They forgot to put the "3" at the beginning of all of those prices!

[–]Larein 0 points1 point ago

What is super unleaded?

[–]aliengoods1 0 points1 point ago

[–]baderedab 0 points1 point ago

My primary activity in college was simply driving around central Oregon having adventures in an early 90's Chevy Silverado. Just can't do that anymore.

[–]NatetheGrate 0 points1 point ago

$11.85. That's how much it would cost to fill my car. Goddamit.

[–]breathcomposed 0 points1 point ago

I want to believe it... but I can't.

[–]rikashiku 0 points1 point ago

I remember when 10 dollars was enough to fill a car... back when I could ask for winegum and kindersurprise when we were at the garage :(.

[–]kellyk311 -1 points0 points ago

Those were the days.

[–]NACHO_MOTHA 1 point2 points ago

Oh the places I could go with those gas prices!

[–]ilvin 1 point2 points ago

The cheapest I remembered was 1.19. Now it's four times that amount. :(

[–]chewb -2 points-1 points ago

bitch I pay almost 7$ / gallon in Europe STFU

[–]gl77 1 point2 points ago

Europe.....a whole fucking continent roughly a quarter the size of the U.S. with some pretty good public transportation available in the most populated areas.

Yea, good comparison.

[–]chewb -1 points0 points ago

first of all, Europe is bigger than the U.S. (check a map and be sure to look North and all the way to Russia. Btw a almost a third of russia counts as Europe too but even without it we're bigger)

Second, why is that a factor? Is gas more expensive in New York? What if I live in the Alps? Do I get cheaper gas? Who gets to decide these things?

edit: overestimated Russias leaning into the continent

[–]gl77 2 points3 points ago

America has thousands of miles of sprawling, wide open spaces that millions of people must drive daily in order to get to work/stores/schools, etc. Most cities and towns have very poor public transportation, so pretty much everywhere in America needs a vehicle of some sort. Even in my city of Jacksonville FL, a city with millions of people living in it, it would be VERY difficult to live here without a vehicle. Even with a car, the airport (extreme north end of the city) is about 40 minutes away from where I live (extreme south end of the city), and that's all interstate driving. And yes, the airport is still in Jacksonville. New York City gets a pass because they have an excellent public transportation system there and you don't even need a car to live there, but sadly NYC is the exception and not the rule.

[–]chewb 1 point2 points ago

There's not that many towns/cities in the EU that exceed 1mil although some capitals can get really immense (ie London almost 15mil) other than that there's people living in rural areas here too. and those trucks that transport our goods have to buy diesel too, which really bumps up the prices (of food, toys, electronics, etc)

so I don't get how it's considered fair that we both have an hour long commute but your gas and other goods are still somehow cheaper. As a bonus you get bigger back yards than here

[–]gl77 0 points1 point ago

Yea, I see what you're saying. I have no idea why you guys get bent over more when it comes to fuel prices. Certainly does suck. Maybe we get it cheaper because we have large yards, therefore we spend more money buying fuel to cut the grass. Sorry for the hostile response originally. I'm not a morning person.

[–]Gaabo 1 point2 points ago

Really? No idea? They tend to give out a decent discount when you're holding them at gun point.

[–]gl77 0 points1 point ago

Yea that's true but not every 'murcan owns a gun surprisingly.

[–]TheSporkening -1 points0 points ago

Early 90's.

Jesus, those were good times.

[–]reed311 0 points1 point ago

They were, but these prices were from the later 90's.

[–]TheSporkening 0 points1 point ago

Where? Canada? In 92-93 I was delivering pizza and would drive out of my way to a new truckstop across town for $.90 a gallon when everyone else was charging $.99, and that was Texas.

[–]jester1983 -1 points0 points ago

I've never understood the 9/10s thing on us prices...just putting 9 means the same and takes up less space. prices in Canada have always been listed as 75.3 back in the 90s and 123.4 after it went over $1

[–]chewb 1 point2 points ago

it's supposed to be psychological. TLDR; Marketers found that humans are stupid

most of us form our reactions / opinions before we reach the end of the number. So we feel that $9.99 is a lot cheaper than $10
