I remember once while in Bangladesh me and my Dad where walking down the street when he decided he wanted to buy a Papaya from a street-vendor. I forget how old I was at the time, but I was pretty young, maybe like ten. The guy selling the fruit was older than me, but probably only by a few years. Maybe he was seventeen at best, probably younger, like fifteen or fourteen.

Anyways, my dad bargained with him and eventually decided to buy a Papaya. After we paid him and took our Papaya, my dad told me how brave that kid must be: working alone, in a huge, crowded city, with no one to make sure that he didn't get robbed, or beaten up, with the expectation that he could sell all his papayas and make a good profit for his (assumed) family. That was one of those moments where it hit me that I was so lucky to have the family I had. I'm 20 now, and I still don't think I've had that amount of responsibility put on my shoulders.

[–]solidsnakem9 26 points27 points ago

Upvote for a Bengali.

[–]toastymow 51 points52 points ago

I'm actually white as fuck, lol. I just lived in Dhaka for 12 years. Parents still do actually.

[–]NatesYourMate 2 points3 points ago

One of my friends who is super white lived in Dubai for a couple of years. I just couldn't grasp that he had lived in an Arabic country and nothing bad had happened (I know that may sound shitty, but it's what I thought). Also, I asked him to say a few words in Arabic and he said he couldn't even remember how to say yes or no anymore. Whole thing confused me.

[–]toastymow 21 points22 points ago

1) Bangladesh actually isn't a Arabic country. The people there are Bengalis, natives of South Asia. But it is a Muslim country, being one of the few "successful" (it has effectively had civilian rule for like 20 or 25 years) Muslim democracy.

2) I get what you're saying, people often would ask my family if we felt "safe" because there are a lot of riots and there was like... some sort of failed coup and then a quasi-coup and stuff, but we always felt safe. None of the violence was ever towards foreigners. No one wants to fuck with the Americans anyways (Yeah, I have an American passport, yeah, its pretty useful).

3) I actually can say very little in Bengali (the language of Bangladesh) because I'm lazy as fuck and my brother, who speaks the language pretty damn well would translate for me.

[–]robbyk123 22 points23 points ago

an Arabic country, Mr. President.

[–]LazyNecromancer 3 points4 points ago

Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha are the Disneylands of the middle east, it's all tall buildings, walled compounds, shopping malls and climate controlled swimming pools for a well of westerner living there.

[–]Miguel_Angel_Face 14 points15 points ago

The same thing happened to me, but in Indonesia with a young girl that was selling me a shirt that I wanted for my baby nephew. "The person" that was with me screamed at me not to take it at the price the young girl was telling me, but to haggle. I only wanted to help the young girl by paying her the price she asked for it, but "the person" made it extremely difficult to do just that. I hate it when people who have money to travel bargain with poor vendors, in a motherfucking third-world country!!!. Sorry for the secrecy but I hate talking about people who can't defend themselves.

[–]testbug0 11 points12 points ago

to be fair, it's because these street vendors are known for outrageously ripping off tourists. a lot of them are con artists too.

a lot of these kids selling stuff often are orphans working for gangs, the money doesn't go to them or their families.

[–]soonami 111 points112 points ago

God, pictures like this really make me appreciate the boring job I have in an air conditioned building doing seemingly meaningless work...

[–]I_have_a_Secret 53 points54 points ago

A picture that makes you think like that is exactly the kind of content we need in this sub. This picture has so much meaning behind it and you will probably remember it for a long time.

[–]latticusnon 26 points27 points ago

HAY GUISE IM GONNA PROPOSE

HAY GUISE SHE SAID YUSS

HAY GUISE I LOST 5 POUNDS

[–]moojah 5 points6 points ago

Many paid occupations are indeed meaningless. They produce nothing. Fix nothing. Create nothing. Help nobody.

[–]VonBrewskie 24 points25 points ago

Nah, they seem that way, but it's a matter of perspective I think. That "meaningless" job crunching numbers exists for a reason. It may not be glorified, but it's still important work. My people load boxes all night. Many of them feel their job is "pointless". I am quick to point out that what we do helps other businesses stay in business. It's not heart surgery, it's not fighting noble battles for freedom, but it does allow other people to stay in business. It is important work. Yours is probably more important than you realize, though many weak people will try to tear you down to make themselves feel better. Be strong. Live where you are and be proud that you can support yourself.

[–]twinbee 2 points3 points ago

It's important because of other kludges in place to prop up tons of unnecessary jobs. "Important" in the same way that manual farming was important until tractors and harvesters came along.

If the kludges were dropped, made more efficient (or automated completely), the OP would have that time to be free instead (with the same productivity).

Not saying this applies to moojah, but unfortunately, you can bet there's tons of UWS out there (Unnecessary Work Syndrome).

[–]Throwawayname 168 points169 points ago

It's amazing how bright those oranges look in that cold, manmade environment.

[–]gear9242 60 points61 points ago

That's pretty typical of Steve McCurry (who took this, by the way). He is very well known for the way he uses color.

[–]timelychime 22 points23 points ago

With sooooooo many people who think they are 'good' photographers after applying instagramy filters; its refreshing to see an actual interesting photography.

Instagramy photographs are the new black&white photographs.

Also, I really want oranges right now.

[–]rewision 29 points30 points ago

I dare say that has a saturation filter added to it.

[–]SOwED 112 points113 points ago

[–]CitizenPremier 98 points99 points ago

I think he's using those oranges to keep warm.

[–]Roxxer 38 points39 points ago

[–]bowmop 27 points28 points ago

This is amazing...

“Why is it called a microscope if it makes things big?”

“Because micro refers to the size of the scope mega scopes are for giants”

[–]CauseItsTrue 6 points7 points ago

what does this prove, for all I know this is a saturation filter on top of a saturation filter

[–]kelseyjaynepinak 26 points27 points ago

my heart sank :/

[–]theboyyousaw 308 points309 points ago

don't wanna turn this into an r/aww thread, but this totally made me kinda sad

[–]I_have_a_Secret 98 points99 points ago

/r/aww threads are supposed to make you sad?

This.changes.everything

[–]CitizenPremier 51 points52 points ago

The little creatures in nature--they don't know that they're ugly!

[–]drbooberry 20 points21 points ago

that's very funny. a fly marrying a bumblebee.

[–]BoringSurprise 6 points7 points ago

i told you i'd shoot

[–]GoatOfUnflappability 3 points4 points ago

but you didn't believe me

[–]charleythechoochoo 3 points4 points ago

WHY DIDN'T YOU BELIEVE ME‽

[–]GoatOfUnflappability 1 point2 points ago

Extra upvote for the interrobang

[–]dangerous_beans 2 points3 points ago

I didn't realize how dark that song was until I was old enough to understand the lyrics.

[–]FlyingSaucerAttack 2 points3 points ago

I'll teach your grandmother to suck eggs!

[–]Womens_rights_LOL 3 points4 points ago

Nice ren and stimpy reference, sir.

[–]ThisOpenFist 30 points31 points ago

/r/aww is for cute or happy pictures. You don't go there to get your sad on.

[–]Beanbaker 14 points15 points ago

My dog just died. Look at how happy he was. Karma for my dead pet please

[–]Kyizen 18 points19 points ago

aww

[–]gruesky 5 points6 points ago

/r/aww makes me sad because of the community in there

[–]neomicron 2 points3 points ago

Yeah that's /r/baww

[–]latticusnon 9 points10 points ago

Baww is for sad. Aww is for cute.

[–]panteradactyl 9 points10 points ago

yeah, those oranges deserve a better home :/

[–]I_have_a_Secret 11 points12 points ago

As a professional orange buyer, I can tell you these are not premium quality oranges which is why this photo is not from a better home.

Most of them are going dry and will be full of just dry pulp with little juice that makes for a chewy bite. There are a couple of good pieces in there though.

So these oranges certainly do not deserve a better home. They deserve this car or my home.

[–]mogifax 24 points25 points ago

You sound like

A professional orange buyer.

But this is the Internet,

So you might be a liar.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt

Because I like a juicy orange.

I'm glad we got this straightened out

... fuck.

[–]troll_upvoter 2 points3 points ago

Sporange. Good luck working that into the poem.

[–]mogifax 4 points5 points ago

So now I'm back online, finally home,

With a bag of Cheetos, a Blue Moon, and a slice of orange.

Jessica Moore's double Ds in Google Chrome,

And now my cock is sporange.

[–]Lord_Bumberchute 6 points7 points ago

You're secretly an orange rapist.

I knew it!

[–]GummySue 4 points5 points ago

Me too. I wish I could buy all those oranges, but I need to sell me some oranges too. Being in I'm in the United States of Corporations I'm a poor man as well. Thanks for the Internet library!

[–]whatlauradid 20 points21 points ago

"Hey you want some oranges? Nah they're fine, just don't ask them about what they've seen."

[–]fuckingcaptcha 19 points20 points ago

I like my oranges with a side of PTSD.

[–]my_cock_in_barack 2 points3 points ago

Orange you special.

[–]Spinfo 209 points210 points ago

Pics like this make me disgusted with myself and my first world problems.

[–]my_fucks_are_missing 37 points38 points ago

Yep. Every time I'm reminded that the petty shit I worry about really pales in comparison to the rest of the world.

[–]Nutshell38 52 points53 points ago

Yeah it really makes me want to get out there and make a dif... lol did you guys see that chick that can flip a solo cup with her booty?

[–]meliaesc 22 points23 points ago

Our attention span for sympathy is so pathetic, the world may never get "better."

Link?

[–]Stack_jungles 16 points17 points ago

My first world problem today is not having a coat that bad-ass.

[–]fizziebob 9 points10 points ago

Here I am complaining about my homework. This guy would probably be ecstatic about high quality education.

[–]PositivelyShocking 2 points3 points ago

Or even just a home to do work in...

[–]anthereddit 7 points8 points ago

Just because someone else has it worse than you doesn't make your own problems insignificant.

[–]horse_you_rode_in_on 127 points128 points ago

I can tell you, from personal experience, that those are probably a lot tastier than what's available at your local supermarket.

[–]toastymow 85 points86 points ago

Goddamit don't remind me. Walking down the street where all these guys will sell their seasonal fruit, fresh from the farms and villages, you can smell that stuff over all the shit and mud that's all over the road. You can smell the mango and pineapples from several feet away. But if you walk into a Supermarket in the US, you can't even smell the mangos if you put them to your nose. >_>

[–]Roflkopt3r 2 points3 points ago

All I can say is that the stuff from our specialised fruit and veggie shop is a dozen time better than that from the supermarket. Just thinking of the cherry tomatoes for example, those from the super market taste very watery while those from the fruit shop are much sweeter.

Germany here, we usually have good standards in our super markets though (just thinking of milk, it's incredibly hard to get decent, fresh milk in other countries...)

[–]PauliEffect 37 points38 points ago

His outfit looks really comfortable. Really really comfortable.

[–]gp0 34 points35 points ago

You mean he looks like one cool motherfucker.

[–]NatesYourMate 14 points15 points ago

Bad ass motherfucker

FTFY

I think it's those bad ass coats that really make you look like you are about to do something amazingly hardcore. And look like a bad ass motherfucker.

[–]Erkel85 8 points9 points ago

That there is one damn fine coat you're wearin'.

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points ago

Mankind is nasty. It sounds cheesy, but we should love each other.

[–]HarveyMcGhee 8 points9 points ago

Everyone should be more based and positive.

[–]FTZ 10 points11 points ago

Fitter. Happier. More productive.

[–]I_Am_Chris625 2 points3 points ago

Damn hippies!

[–]TrickyDickyLicky 5 points6 points ago

What kid of car is that?

[–]ctyt 7 points8 points ago

Very possibly a GAZ-24 Volga.

[–]caseyj355 14 points15 points ago

Man the contrast is crazy in this picture

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]HolyMoholyNagy 9 points10 points ago

This was likely shot with Kodachrome slide film, a favorite of the photographer, Steve McCurry (though it was shot in 2003, so it's not impossible that it was shot digitally). Kodachrome was known for its saturation, as you can see in these pictures, shot by McCurry on the last roll of Kodachrome ever made.

[–]Doubleup 6 points7 points ago

Ill bet that guy NEVER gets sick.

[–]rarkai 12 points13 points ago

Fallout 4 is looking really realistic.

[–]mphatik 18 points19 points ago

People need to learn humility.

[–]rogermelly1 4 points5 points ago

What is humility. I really don't know. Help me out

[–]justifiesactions 4 points5 points ago

This is a surprisingly powerful picture

[–]moojah 10 points11 points ago

This is heartbreaking.

[–]lispboy 7 points8 points ago

As a small business owner, I can relate to this man.

[–]Fourhand_451 3 points4 points ago

Album Cover

[–]ImAVibration 2 points3 points ago

Afghanistan

[–]agen_kolar 2 points3 points ago

I'd buy them all from him if I could, but let him keep most to sell tomorrow.

[–]gear9242 2 points3 points ago

This was taken by Steve McCurry, best known for June 1985 National Geographic cover photo, Afghan Girl.

[–]tbqh 3 points4 points ago

Oh man I really want to buy all those oranges from that man and tip him $1000. And I want to give him and his family all the happiness in the world and I hope he gets a job so his family can eat enough food and ahdjkhs this photo has made me sad.

Edit: Missed a word.

[–]JCelsius 10 points11 points ago

"Orange you glad I don't sell bananas?"

[–]TimmayTheTurtle 5 points6 points ago

Thinkin this guy doesn't get too much business..

[–]asldkfououhe 10 points11 points ago

reddit loves to romanticize the poor and it makes me uncomfortable

[–]awatos 2 points3 points ago

Holy bullet holes!

[–]offthetwig 2 points3 points ago

super beautiful.

[–]NoahinVirginia 0 points1 point ago

Unless Cave Johnson made those oranges, nobody is going to want them there.

[–]purdster83 2 points3 points ago

Yes, I'll take one orange please. The, erm, black tar variety orange, that is.

[–]kingwilly123 2 points3 points ago

Great photo.

[–]wordetothinemother 2 points3 points ago

: (

[–]cheetofingerz 2 points3 points ago

Idk what it is but this picture is heart wrenching for me

[–]WhatDoesThatMeme 1 point2 points ago

Did anyone else notice he's using a lantern in broad daylight?

[–]Nielsio 2 points3 points ago

[–]lifesince 2 points3 points ago

This photo makes me sad.

[–]SkytheDrop 0 points1 point ago

My first thought was "Gee, those are laced with cocaine...."

[–]pueo 2 points3 points ago

This photo makes me wish I could buy all those oranges.

[–]Posing_Hipster_011 2 points3 points ago

It's so beautiful, but makes me feel depressed

[–]jandalofdoom 0 points1 point ago

Brings new meaning to the term "Fire Sale".

[–]HisAndHearse 0 points1 point ago

Oh dear. I have just been slapped in the face with my own naivete. Is that from a fire? Why's he in a weird fire garage? Where is this?

[–]pancakeChef 1 point2 points ago

I'm pretty sure there's a deathclaw in that cage behind the car.

[–]omegaweapon 0 points1 point ago

oranges, now with more depleted uranium!

[–]patio87 0 points1 point ago

Anyone know who's work this is?

[–]Bedeone 0 points1 point ago

[–]Gerbil1320 0 points1 point ago

MY ORANGES!

[–]theBMB 0 points1 point ago

If I ate those, would I be K'?

[–]Alicuza 0 points1 point ago

Any idea where this was taken?

Edit: Nevermind, it's Afghanistan.

[–]03Titanium 0 points1 point ago

"Yiss yiss, these are very high quality ahhh oranges. Their flavor will affect anyone within a 50ft radius."

[–]i_know_tofu 0 points1 point ago

This image leaves me a bit bereft..how can we live so well, without appreciating it?

I feel very sad, and very lucky.

[–]tusocalypse 0 points1 point ago

Is this from the post-apocalyptic future?

[–]timtoronto 0 points1 point ago

Go to Mexico (or even LA / San Diego). There they stand at intersections in the hot sun all day long selling oranges.

Plus they have better looking oranges.

[–]latticusnon 1 point2 points ago

This is a really awesome photo. Everyone is putting themselves in his shoes and imagining what it would take to end up there, yet we have no idea if he has a good or bad life.

[–]Sharris3 1 point2 points ago

Powerful imagery, makes me feel lucky.

[–]decenthumanbeing 0 points1 point ago

I would buy one

[–]figman2 0 points1 point ago

That guy looks oddly similar to the "MY CABBAGES" guy.

but with oranges.

[–]grandpachaos 0 points1 point ago

Whatever you do don't get caught buying any! You'll end up playing chess and sweeping the same goddamn room all day... damn republicans

[–]NatesYourMate 0 points1 point ago

These coats need to be a thing in America. Where can I get one?

[–]DrVoodoo 0 points1 point ago

Looks like this is a Steve McCurry pic from Afghanistan.

His most famous pic, of course, is "Afghan Girl." Here's the "Then and Now" version.

[–]I_Reference_Seinfeld 0 points1 point ago

I dunno what to tell you, buddy. Take it up with consumer affairs.

[–]Slimeaux05 1 point2 points ago

It's sad to see how far Rico Suave has fallen.

[–]MagicMurderBean 0 points1 point ago

so I heard you like oranges...

[–]Its42 0 points1 point ago

I love the "haters gonn hate" look on his face

[–]allthatsalsa 1 point2 points ago

This man isn't even sketchy, but he's still the sketchiest orange dealer I've ever seen.

[–]l3m0n3at3r 1 point2 points ago

I'd buy an orange just because this makes me really sad.

[–]HollywoodLiontamer 0 points1 point ago

Makes me wanna go buy a decent camera and start taking photos.

[–]DarkReaper94 0 points1 point ago

Orange is the color of his loyalty.

[–]AteTooManyCookies 1 point2 points ago

This is the norm many places overseas. Usually there are kids lined up along the streets selling limes, nuts, etc on little tables or on the sidewalk. It's amazing because I've been exposed to this a lot while traveling with my family but after being focused on school for the last couple of years things like this just slip out of my mind :(

[–]Kinglink 0 points1 point ago

I will hate on all sorts of photoshopping photos, and complain about how it ruins pictures.

But this is amazing quality. It feels almost like a picture, and the contrast is amazing.

This is a picture has me wondering so many questions, with 0 answers available. Just remarkable.

[–]Potgut -1 points0 points ago

I feel bad where I would want to buy oranges from him, but lot of those oranges look gross, a bunch look like they might have mold on them..

[–]URPerfect 0 points1 point ago

Story behind, anyone?

[–]owlhowler 1 point2 points ago

this is a great photo on so many levels.

[–]neoandblondetrinity 0 points1 point ago

I seriously thought this was going to be a fallout scene. Wow that makes you think that fallout exists today and the 1% think they need more tax cuts otherwise they cannot trickle anything down to the rest of the world.

[–]highpur 0 points1 point ago

Someone is going to get shot

[–]BLVD 1 point2 points ago

I would buy oranges from him. The ones that I buy at the store have no flavor. If there is one thing that I found in my days is that people don't stand out in the weather to sell shitty fruit.

[–]MrBoog 0 points1 point ago

Septon Meribald?

[–]justbeclever 0 points1 point ago

True style.

[–]Aint_got_no_agua 0 points1 point ago

Sorry kid, I only eat Tangelos. You don't have any GMOs? Guess I'll be on my way.

[–]SansaLovesLemonCakes 0 points1 point ago

If movies have taught me anything, someone is about to die.

[–]lazywhale 1 point2 points ago

This is such a beautiful picture.

[–]Twotest 1 point2 points ago

This man will probably never be happy.

[–]Teds101 1 point2 points ago

"Oranges."

[–]jjesusfreak01 1 point2 points ago

This isn't nearly as sketchy as the guy I bought limes from yesterday. I thought he was homeless so I was just going to give him some change, then he goes off asking if I want some limes. He pulls a little bag out of a burlap sack, and then as i'm walking away starts ranting about the state of society or something.

[–]BigCityKnight 0 points1 point ago

Those oranges look delicious because they're surrounded by misery.

[–]IAMEngineer 1 point2 points ago

i have been to Afghanistan and have seen first hand what troubles they go for to sell those oranges. One boy that i met, sold me 5 oranges for 20 cents, i asked him how he got those oranges he told me he hiked a 2 hour walk in the morning to his grandmothers to pick some because hes father is very ill and there is no food on the table. i dropped down to tears as his little brother was right next to me. He told me not and to eat the oranges. I fell so much pain for these boys i gave him all the money i had in my pocket which was equivalent to 30$ tried to give me all his oranges i simply said go feed your family and not to spend it in all one place.

[–]Massgyo 0 points1 point ago

Steve McCurrie (Sp), you'll love all this stuff.

[–]Schwermzilla 0 points1 point ago

I bet he is stuck with a Blackberry

[–]doc2be6642 1 point2 points ago

...that hit me right in the feels

[–]Offensive_Brute 0 points1 point ago

he should advertise it as a prevention/treatment for scurvy. itll sell better that way.

[–]KeatingOrRoark 1 point2 points ago

Where is this? I will buy all the oranges, please.

[–]GHOST_S0LD13R 0 points1 point ago

Looks leggit.

[–]msandrew 1 point2 points ago

This really sinks in the idea of a picture is worth a thousand words

[–]lobehold 1 point2 points ago

"In a world without color...."

[–]Robstaley 0 points1 point ago

that dude looks like a smooth businessman

[–]derpingNherping 1 point2 points ago

While I appreciate the skill of photography that went into taking this picture, I feel that the first comment shouldn't be about the colors and filters but about the meaning of the picture.

[–]IAMABlackPerson1983 0 points1 point ago

Nigga I want a orange.

[–]superawesomeid 0 points1 point ago

hey you got the stuff?

[–]Mcsavage89 0 points1 point ago

Looks straight out of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

[–]orthag 1 point2 points ago

Fuck. That shit's depressing. I'm going to go blow up orks with a big tank and see if that makes me feel better.

[–]oranges4sale 0 points1 point ago

HOW DID YOU GET THAT PICTURE OF ME?!?!?!

[–]cheesebong 0 points1 point ago

I can just picture this guy bringing his sack of oranges to this place every day hoping to sell a few of them to feed his family. Goddamn onions :(

[–]whomp_whomp 1 point2 points ago

"What are ya buyin?!"

[–]Im_Doc 0 points1 point ago

Understatement of the year: wow.

[–]RogueCMR 0 points1 point ago

sadly, an orange is likely to be the highlight of their week.

[–]skorda 1 point2 points ago

This broke my heart a little bit.

[–]realitythermostat 0 points1 point ago

iss aightz

[–]Vuchetich 0 points1 point ago

Maybe they're just his oranges, and he's just showing them off.

[–]SaturdaysKids 0 points1 point ago

Chernobyl oranges are the best kind of oranges!

I swear to god if anyone replies with chernobyl puns I'll murder everything.
