I have to wake up at 10 am! Or else i miss fucking breakfast at Mc donalds.

[–]howisthisnottaken 4 points5 points ago

10:30 on Saturdays or even 11 at some awesome Mcd's

[–]dustlesswalnut 167 points168 points ago

I make quite a bit of money, work from home, and can wake up whenever I want. Your jobs all suck.

[–]NomadofExile 72 points73 points ago

[–]SourCreamWater 6 points7 points ago

What do you do?

[–]dustlesswalnut 25 points26 points ago

I'm a software engineer.

[–]L_R_J 5 points6 points ago

If you don't mind me asking what's the ballpark for starting wages for that kind of job?

[–]dustlesswalnut 13 points14 points ago

In a mid-sized midwestern city when I started six years ago, starting wage with no degree was $45k/year ($22.50/hr) for a 9-5 at a local company. My usual rate now is $90/hour.

[–]wangotango22 5 points6 points ago

I'm curious what the sequence of events was that has led you to this career? Please share.

My case is similar, although I'm on the bottom rungs of the payscale at this point, hoping to increase over time.

[–]dustlesswalnut 9 points10 points ago

I was in school getting a bio sciences degree and working a couple help desk/student programmer positions at various departments/colleges at the university. After three years I realized I hated bio sciences and loved programming, so I quit my student jobs and got a job at a small firm and switched my major to comp sci. After one quarter, I was offered a full time position so I dropped out of school. (I was offered the job I wanted to get with the degree I was pursuing, so it made sense.)

Several years went by, I met my wife, and her medical residency forced us to move to a new state so I started freelancing and haven't looked back since.

[–]wangotango22 1 point2 points ago

That's awesome. I'm kind of curious as to what programming languages you're working with, but no hurry on that answer. It's funny, I went to film school - loved it (most of the time at least, sometimes it was like working with Gordon Ramsey-esque levels of drama), but was always the guy that was creating websites for friends who were releasing demo reels, short films, music videos, live videos of bands. So, I taught myself web programming since I was interested in that also and there was literally always someone asking for something.

Quit pursuing work in film (formally), went into programming, haven't looked back since.

Guess it goes to show you, sometimes your interests just guide you to where to should to be. And it pays well. Cheers sir.

[–]dustlesswalnut 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, some jobs are fulfilling, some pay well, and I've been lucky enough to find one that's both. I know there are programmers out there that are smarter than I and work harder, but sometimes it's just being in the right place at the right time.

As far as languages go, I'll use whatever my clients require, but my main work at the moment is with PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. (98% of my work is custom web-based database applications.)

[–]wangotango22 0 points1 point ago

Seems like we're on the same page. Damn, I should ask for a raise. Although I will say this: once you've mastered (or even learned a moderate amount) of javascript or PHP, the doors fly open.

But anyway, thanks for answering all of my questions. I appreciate it a bunch. It gives me some insight into what I should be aiming for next.

[–]I_Hate_This_Username 0 points1 point ago

How do you advertise your skills? I've been working for 5 years and make a respectable $30.90/hr, good benefits, but it would be nice to become a freelancer, at least maybe in a part time fashion.

[–]dustlesswalnut 4 points5 points ago

100% word-of-mouth. When I quit the company I worked at I was making $65k salary and my boss was charging our clients $100/hour for my services. I did have medical and dental, 2 weeks of vacation/year, and ~$8k in bonuses throughout the year.

My first year I made about $110k, last year I made $130k, and this year I'm on track to make $180k. I was charging ~$60/hour when I first started because I felt that charging more would lose bids, but I got over that and charge what I think is a reasonable price now.

I have to say my situation is somewhat unique, I'm lucky enough to have two clients that keep me busy for 40-50 hours/week, so I really don't have a lot of the "freelance" worries (knock on wood) that many people do.

[–]I_Hate_This_Username 1 point2 points ago

Well, crap! Good for you though!

[–]k1LL3r7 0 points1 point ago

How regular is freelance work and how do you find jobs?

[–]dustlesswalnut 0 points1 point ago

I've got a few very regular clients, a few more that I get a job or two from per year, and the other 10% of my income is from one-ofs that I've never heard from again.

I don't seek out much work since my main clients keep me so busy, but when I do look I start first by asking my current clients/friends/family if they know anyone looking for a programmer. After that I hit LinkedIn for local small business groups to see what programming-related questions they're discussing in their forums. I've never had to go farther than that, but I suppose I'd start responding to the recruiter emails or check out freelancing websites, but as I said, my main clients keep me busy for 40-50 hours/week pretty much every week.

[–]chemguy90 0 points1 point ago

I'm an IT major and just got my first "IT" job less than a month ago. I still have no degree (just turned 22) but I'm about to finish in less than a year.

I know you may not want to share publicly because you are very successful, but, I was wondering, how old where you when you started? And how did you get clients when you first started free lancing?

Thank you in advance. If you don't want to answer publicly then you can PM.

[–]dustlesswalnut 0 points1 point ago

I started programming at 12/13, but I got my first non-student, non-volunteer "real" programming job when I was 20. I started freelancing when I was 23 when my wife and I had to move for her medical residency.

My first clients came from my old workplace (I worked out an agreement with my old boss to share profits for a couple years), and the rest came from word-of-mouth and LinkedIn.

I'm really lucky to have a couple long-term customers that keep me busy 40-50 hours a week, so I don't really have to worry about looking for work, but LinkedIn helped me grow considerably when I first started.

[–]chemguy90 0 points1 point ago

Perfect! I have a LinkedIn account but did not know that it played such a big role. Congrats on your success and thanks for the feedback.

[–]besvr 0 points1 point ago

Freelancing does seem the way to go in this industry. I've been a programmer in the midwest for 7 years now...how do you take the leap into freelancing? There were a couple sites I was on, and it seemed like the people there would bid the price so low it wasn't worth doing.

[–]dustlesswalnut 0 points1 point ago

I was forced to jump when my wife matched into a residency program in a different state. My main client did not want to work with anyone but me, so I came up with an amicable work-around of my non-compete/non-solicit with my old employer. Along the way I've picked up my own clients, but that one still accounts for about 45% of my income.

[–]abom420 0 points1 point ago

BRB, learning how to engineer software.

[–]DorkPassenger 0 points1 point ago

Depends on where you are, and what you're starting with, and what you're doing.

Very generally, anywhere from 30k to 60k. A degree will usually get you more money, but unless it's a masters, it's probably only worth 4-6 years of experience.

[–]MesPetitesSweets 3 points4 points ago

High five, buddy!

[–]chadsexytime 0 points1 point ago

I was dumb and took a job doing db work. Hard to sell small software solutions that require massive oracle licenses.

I probably should get off my ass and learn me some web tech

[–]dustlesswalnut 0 points1 point ago

98% of what I do is custom web-based database applications. Luckily, everything I use is open-source. Hopefully Oracle doesn't fuck MySQL up too much in the coming years.

[–]Shiverfox 0 points1 point ago

Everyone upvote the guy with the better job.

[–]All7hatRemains 15 points16 points ago

Worked with a lot of cooks over the last 4 years (Army) and never have they gotten up at 0145. Breakfast chow is usually 530-700 why on earth would you need to get to work at 0145? It doesn't take that long to scramble some eggs and make some biscuits.

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 7 points8 points ago

Field cooking off of 1 CK. Not a lot of workspace.

[–]All7hatRemains 9 points10 points ago

Okay. Sorry to be skeptical. You know how the Army is. DUDE WE HAD IT SO MUCH WORSE THAN YOU BRO! NOOOOO BRO WE DID MAN SHIT SUCKED!

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 5 points6 points ago

When we are not in the field and are cooking on the dfac, we are normally starting at 3.

[–]Kuskesmed 3 points4 points ago

I am assuming that you get more than 3hrs45min sleep in a day though? Unless it's certain days only. I doubt you'd function with that little sleep for 7 days a week?

[–]Chotgun 1 point2 points ago

(from what I remember my instructors telling me) We have to get at least a required 4 hours of sleep a night (if applicable (?)). Sometimes slightly less but it could be 4 hours for a month or more. So it all depends. I just got stationed at Fort Stewart Georgia and am attached to an MP unit. It all depends. To OP: How many are you needing to feed in your CK at the moment? I know it's 800... But sometimes the Army says allghaklhg2409hgiwpqenghiowhgeio to it.

*Note: I'm a cook to.

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 0 points1 point ago

We are back in from the field now, cooking out of the dfac again, but it was 796 out of the CK if I recall correctly.

[–]All7hatRemains -1 points0 points ago

For some reason I doubt this: /

[–]rydrid 1 point2 points ago

LOL. every time i hate my job, i just think that i could have been a cook instead of an infantryman.

[–]ZombieFaceXP 1 point2 points ago

When I went to JRTC in july, we had enough cooks we could break it into 3 shifts. 5 for breakfast, 4 for dinner (MRE's for lunch) and 2 for midnight chow. And our NCOs werent shitbags, so they actually did some work so we didnt have to work ADA.

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 1 point2 points ago

We have had a lot of NCO's that would tell you their job is to supervise, and nothing else, and they stuck by it.

[–]ZombieFaceXP 1 point2 points ago

Had one like that, until the dfac manager pointed out that the NCOs job is to LEAD, not just supervise

[–]shnoog 87 points88 points ago

[–]JTDeuce 18 points19 points ago

That gif just gave me a seizure.

[–]Cheesusaur 27 points28 points ago

You should probably go the Hospital.

[–]Jesus_Waffle 0 points1 point ago

Your seizure just gave me an erection.

[–]UKMuffins 0 points1 point ago

jesus, you're such an asshole.

[–]NightOwl58 4 points5 points ago

It keeps getting closer... BUT IT NEVER GETS CLOSER

[–]the0jakester 24 points25 points ago

Alright. The game is over people.... Go home... This guy wins.

Seriously it's over.

[–]sullyosullivan 8 points9 points ago

how do you have time for reddit?

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 35 points36 points ago

You ever sat in front of an oven and watched 800 servings of roast cook for 2 hours? That's when.

[–]sullyosullivan 27 points28 points ago

well no....no i have not

[–]windowpuncher 15 points16 points ago

Hurry up and wait

[–]saabstorey 0 points1 point ago

Don't sleep late learn to hate your brother, before you hate your foe

[–]mindaika 10 points11 points ago

Most I ever watched was 755 servings of roast.

[–]UCRsSon 6 points7 points ago

Culinarian here can confirm, watching 800 servings of anything sucks

[–]UCRsSon -5 points-4 points ago

Im going to post this multiple times hoping it doesn't get buried. Would you be willing to do an AMA? I would love to hear about your job and how you got to this point. Just a few questions to start you off would be: What branch? What training did you go through? What is a normal day for you? How long have you been serving?

[–]minimission 14 points15 points ago

well I see your 0145 start and raise you 1900 start! omg! I'm starting before you even go to bed!

[–]morphine12 34 points35 points ago

Yea? Well I start at 0900 THE DAY BEFORE. That's right. Every time you go to work, I was already working yesterday.

Edit: Unless it's Monday.

[–]minimission 14 points15 points ago

The day before

[–]jeaguilar 0 points1 point ago

Interrobang upvote.

[–]ChocoChooChoo 7 points8 points ago

I am just waiting for some insomniac guy to tell that he haven't slept in a month so we could end this bullshit.

[–]CRIZZLEC_ECHO 4 points5 points ago

Only valid post for this "I wake up earlier than you" shitstorm on reddit

It's like the reddit equivalent of "my dad can beat up your dad"

I get it waking up early sucks, we all get it.

[–]bhous3 42 points43 points ago

Maybe you shouldn't have joined the military as a fry cook.

/thread

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 26 points27 points ago

Ahem. Food service specialist, actually. ;)

[–]Slyfox00 20 points21 points ago

Don't listen to them bro! ... But seriously the coffee machine in the DFAC has been 99% water this week...

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 10 points11 points ago

Ha! Not a problem I have. I'm always being told to take it easy on the grounds.

[–]windowpuncher 9 points10 points ago

I thank you for your appreciation of good coffee.

[–]big80smullet 1 point2 points ago

I'm convinced you can't get good coffee in 90% of america. They aren't aware of its existence.

[–]ohnastyrobo 2 points3 points ago

I have never actually seen one of you.. only contractors..

[–]UCRsSon 3 points4 points ago

[–]H_E_Pennypacker 8 points9 points ago

Former military cook here, allow me to jump in...

Inchon, Korea, 1950. I was the best cook Uncle Sam ever saw, slinging hash for the Fighting 103rd. As we marched north, our supply lines were getting thin. One day a couple of GIs found a crate, inside were six hundred pounds of prime Texas steer. At least it once was prime. The Use date was three weeks past, but I was arrogant, I was brash, I thought if I used just the right spices, cooked it long enough. I went too far. I over seasoned it. Men were keeling over all around me. I can still hear the retching, the screaming. I sent sixteen of my own men to the latrines that night. They were just boys.

[–]Pack_of_derms 4 points5 points ago

Motto of the cooks corps, death from within.

[–]dsutari 2 points3 points ago

You ruined festivus.

[–]Howard_Beale 0 points1 point ago

Frank?

[–]UCRsSon 1 point2 points ago

Only steers and queers come from texas

[–]bhous3 1 point2 points ago

Jackal0pe's job: Make shitty food slightly less shittier stuff given to him. It's actually a complement, because the military gets shit for food.

Seriously, you find a military member on reddit and decide to ask an AMA from a cook? why not a pilot or a captain of a ship or something?

[–]UCRsSon 3 points4 points ago

I'm asking because SpecOps members and riflemen do AMAs all the time. Ive been through the threads. I want to know how life differs for this guy. Also because I want to know what other jobs he does, because well it just interests me. I am also considering service. So chill.

[–]bhous3 0 points1 point ago

If you're considering service in the military, I can promise you the only place near the food you'll want to be is eating it.

Take it from a servicemember.

[–]UCRsSon 0 points1 point ago

MREs?

[–]bhous3 0 points1 point ago

are not bad, but usually only given to people in the field.

[–]UCRsSon 0 points1 point ago

would you opt to eat them?

ooh what branch are you serving in? thanks by the way. Service members are always appreciated

[–]bhous3 0 points1 point ago

I would rather take my BAS to walmart etc and make my own food, but yes I would opt to eat mres over the galley/mess hall/chow hall.

I'm a nuke in the navy.

[–]Dred 1 point2 points ago

Dude, the MRE's of today are delicious. I'd buy them for my daily lunch on post if they weren't roughly 1500cal a piece and about $7 retail.

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 0 points1 point ago

And sometimes not even that. ;)

[–]bhous3 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, but unless they're giving you BAS it's not even worth it.

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 0 points1 point ago

This is a fairly barnie'd down version of it, although when we get to make stuff from scratch, it's not usually too bad. Those heat and serve meals though...

[–]MesPetitesSweets 2 points3 points ago

Aww, shit! You beat me to it! :D

[–]thadjohnson 1 point2 points ago

Exactly.

[–]hacky_sack_attack 9 points10 points ago

As a marine who worked late night mess duty on ship... I feel your pain bro.

[–]boppy28 4 points5 points ago

Pack it up people. This guy has it.

[–]Ajaxsexwhale 4 points5 points ago

I feel as if these posts are turning into this.

[–]AbigailNormal 11 points12 points ago

Thank you for serving.

Also, this will always be my favorite gif. I wish I could give you 2 upvotes.

[–]minimission 12 points13 points ago

haha! good pun, serving!

[–]PhotonMalaise 0 points1 point ago

It's like he's cooking and being in the army at the same time!

[–]Tango_Mike_Foxtrot 13 points14 points ago

Doing reconnaissance missions on the Iraq Syria border for 72 hours straight with no sleep and very little food or water.

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 12 points13 points ago

Damn dude, much respect.

[–]WiseGuy1020 5 points6 points ago

MOS?

[–]Tango_Mike_Foxtrot 5 points6 points ago

19 Delta, spent 4 months of my tour at COP Heider in Rabiah it was glorious and horrible at the same time.

[–]WiseGuy1020 2 points3 points ago

Rock on.

[–]Kap001 1 point2 points ago

My recruiter was a scout from what I heard a lot of respect for you.

[–]howisthisnottaken 3 points4 points ago

But we're not at war in either country... wait yes we are... both countries.

[–]killedtheoldme 16 points17 points ago

hahahaha... wow. our country has arguably the greatest history of labor movements fighting for improved working conditions and rights. now we are all reduced to arguing over who is better at taking it in the ass for money, wearing our bitch status like some twisted badge of honor.

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 3 points4 points ago

Don't get me wrong, I love this job. I just think it's funny watching people complain about 7 a.m. mornings.

[–]uff_the_fluff 14 points15 points ago

You are expected to get only 3.75 hours of sleep how many days a week?

[–]MrDeckard 1 point2 points ago

To be fair, he's in the military. He doesn't get to unionize.

[–]killedtheoldme -1 points0 points ago

eh, im gonna have to disagree. every worker has the opportunity to unionize. the government can criminalize and punish it, but that doesnt eliminate the individuals choice in the matter. i still smoke pot. all it takes is the group of workers to unify and vote on matters. all of which can be done without government sanction, and historically have to be done so.

[–]NaBeav 4 points5 points ago

Respectfully, you have no fucking clue what you are talking about.

[–]killedtheoldme -1 points0 points ago

i would argue the same back at you.

[–]MrDeckard 1 point2 points ago

If soldiers go on strike, they line them up against a bulkhead and shoot them. It's more than illegal, it's desertion.

[–]killedtheoldme -3 points-2 points ago

individuals, maybe. but if you organize and coordinate first, it becomes a political issue, rather than criminal. just like any form of civil disobedience.

there was a time when your statement was the truth for all workers, not just military. i would argue they deserve, and are responsible to fight for the same protections.

[–]MrDeckard 4 points5 points ago

It just doesn't work that way. You'd never find enough soldiers willing to do that, and it's a good thing too. If soldiers could strike, we'd be left defenseless. There are certain jobs that shouldn't be allowed to force a work stoppage. Soldiers have one of those jobs.

[–]killedtheoldme -2 points-1 points ago

i disagree. there are NO job classes which should be considered by society to relinquish their rights to collective bargaining. i would argue personally that in our current environment of neo conservatism encouraging the use of military force to shape foreign policy, that such collective bargaining among soldiers would have a positive benefit. you dont often have to convince the military population that war is necessary if a country is being invaded. any other situation the individual morality and ethics of soldiers should trump orders. this is the essence of the soldier's stated responsibility to ignore illegal orders. and from personal experience, i can tell you for sure that the us army (in 2002) was in basic training only paying the barest of lip service to this responsibility, and IMO deliberately denying soldiers of the information they would need to make such a critical decision. i guess the point im trying to make is boiled down to, if you can get enough military personnel to band together and declare that a particular order is illegal or unethical, then they should at least get some consideration and not immediate punishment or dismissal. that is tantamount to the administration placing pressure on research efforts to doctor their results. i would personally argue that there is a systemic disease in the ranks of the armed forces, in that they seem to view themselves as tools of administration power, rather than instruments for checking it. but, given the fact that the fed switched to an all volunteer army in the shadows of the vietnam draft, it is difficult to find people who would fill such roles in the military. even those personnel who know what they are doing/being asked to do is wrong, they feel indebted because they are being provided food, shelter, and in many cases post secondary education. thusly, for a large portion of the military it is not so much bearing allegiance to a particular ideology or foreign policy, as a sense of not biting the hand that feeds. this is a reason that i am personally in favor of ending all volunteer military service, and enacting mandatory service for both genders 18-30 via the reserves/national guard.

[–]antaresiv 2 points3 points ago

i'm saving this gif for future use.

[–]wangotango22 2 points3 points ago

What the hell are you cooking these guys that takes 4-5 hours to cook?

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 0 points1 point ago

Sorry that the pictures are so small, but this is the inside of a CK. they are not very big, only about 4 people can work in there without bumping elbows, and that includes prep, stove, and grill. http://www.seabeecook.com/equipment/new/cont_kitchen.htm

[–]wangotango22 1 point2 points ago

So, in other words, it's not the cuisine that's the problem, but the lack of kitchen space to work in. That makes sense - it's not easy to work efficiently in close quarters like that. Ask any food truck operator and they'll say the same. Thanks for answering my question!

[–]Chotgun 1 point2 points ago

You'd be surprised how long it takes to cook in the field on one CK.

*Edit: grammar

[–]radbrew 2 points3 points ago

[–]billiarddaddy 2 points3 points ago

My first unit in the Army was an Armor Battalion.

You never piss off the cooks or supply. Never.

[–]RedLine19K 1 point2 points ago

OIF I, Fallujah, 9 months in, finally a roof over our heads instead of sleeping outside. Cooks had an actual kitchen and food was better than MREs. One day on trash detail, we find some gatorade bottles and other "evidence". They pushed forward pallets of gatorade and a few other treats to boost morale, and the cooks kept it for themselves. You never ever piss off an armor Bn, either. Line companies can make life hell for a few bluefalcons.

[–]VSFX 1 point2 points ago

I feel like it would be very hard to live on less than 4 hours of sleep for very long. Do you work every day?

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 1 point2 points ago

A lot of people are asking me about that. I should have specified, I am a Guardsman. So I only run on this schedule for about 2 weeks at a time, otherwise I am a full time student, and cook at a restaurant when I am not at guard. I realize now that I should have made that clear as people are thinking I do this 365 days a year.

[–]wangotango22 2 points3 points ago

Thanks for your service - what are you going to school for?

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 1 point2 points ago

Information Technology.

[–]AngryCod 3 points4 points ago

So, you'll already be used to working all night while all your co-workers are asleep.

[–]bastard_thought -1 points0 points ago

2 weeks at a time, once a year*

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 0 points1 point ago

I've done 3 this year actually.

[–]bastard_thought 0 points1 point ago

What kind of Guard unit are you in?

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 0 points1 point ago

Engineers, but I have supported OCS and done 2 weeks for a deploying unit.

[–]parkegraves 0 points1 point ago

These are starting to come full circle. If people post that they have to wake up much earlier than this it's going to be back to waking up late again. haha

[–]Nicknin10do 0 points1 point ago

My question is why do you go to bed at 10?
If you're working that whole time, sure, I feel bad.

[–]roflz 0 points1 point ago

First world problems?

[–]Crazylegs704 0 points1 point ago

Winner. Winnerwinner, winner, winner, fucking winner

[–]TheWillbilly9 0 points1 point ago

You should go to bed earlier

[–]ginganinja91 0 points1 point ago

Don't want to be a hater, but this sounds impossible as a daily schedule, people can't survive on under 4 hours of sleep a day continuously.

[–]barnfodder 0 points1 point ago

As someone who works shifts, all this whining about waking up early greatly amuses me.

[–]Chotgun 0 points1 point ago

Question: What branch of service are you?

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 0 points1 point ago

Army Guard.

[–]rsong965 1 point2 points ago

If meth head was a respectable job then that would be the end-all.

[–]I_play_elin 0 points1 point ago

1:45.. why do you even go to bed? Why not just sleep after that? I don't go to bed until 4 or 5 am anyway..

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 0 points1 point ago

After breakfast, we do paperwork, clean, prep for supper, get bothered by all the brass about not doing enough other training, that sort of thing. We are lucky to get 1 hour to ourselves between breakfast and supper.

[–]I_play_elin 1 point2 points ago

Touche

[–]fartpoopandpee 1 point2 points ago

What time is breakfast that you have to start preparing at 1:45?

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 1 point2 points ago

Has to be ready by 5

[–]fartpoopandpee 2 points3 points ago

One more question, are you the stereotypical fat army cook?

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 3 points4 points ago

As a Minnesotan, I prefer the term "well built for the elements".

[–]coldize 0 points1 point ago

that's unhealthy. you shouldn't be forced to do that.

[–]tagnut 1 point2 points ago

Sometimes I do nightshifts. 8pm to 8am. I'm at work at 11pm, 1am, whatever you want. These posts are silly. Kinda like Camelot. It is a silly place.

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 0 points1 point ago

Subtle reference, I like it.

[–]phagyna 0 points1 point ago

I was at work for 30 hours today/(yesterday?). I hate all of you.

[–]iDisc 0 points1 point ago

[–]wingie 0 points1 point ago

I was expecting a photo of what making breakfast for a battalion looks like. =(

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 0 points1 point ago

This isn't my unit, but this is what the inside of the kitchen looks like by about 0200. http://dmna.ny.gov/blog/images/1269018748--100315-A-2850B-001.jpg

[–]wingie 0 points1 point ago

Oh wow! Thank you!

[–]reagan2016 0 points1 point ago

The only problem with waking up early is if you didn't go to sleep early.

[–]rodwool 0 points1 point ago

I work 6 hours on, 6 hours off on a tanker ship. Try doing that for 3 months solid haha

[–]wolfmann 0 points1 point ago

Baby wont stop screaming... feedinhs like every 2 hours. Diapers in between. What is sleep?

Oh and i have more than 90 episodes of sleep apnea an hour.

[–]MajestikM00se 0 points1 point ago

DBAP, America.

[–]dackkorto1 0 points1 point ago

That's like 3 hours of sleep, that suuuucks.

[–]Iron_Philosophy -1 points0 points ago

Nobody told you to join Government murder for hire, so quit bitching.

[–]HotDinnerBatman 0 points1 point ago

Can we stop these now?

[–]iwantaredditaccount 1 point2 points ago

And you get to sleep after you are all done making breakfast and get up at 1:45 pm to cook supper. All the while people on KP are cleaning all the dishes that YOU used.

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 0 points1 point ago

Sounds like someone is a little bitter about getting in trouble a lot.

[–]darth-nick 0 points1 point ago

I knew the amount of sleep they allow you in the military is far from sufficient but that's ridiculous.

[–]mocodity 0 points1 point ago

4 AM bakery!? That's me! (feelin special)

And night shifts are a whole other thing.

[–]PeppermintEnt 0 points1 point ago

please for the love of god stop posting this gif D:

[–]Kalistes 0 points1 point ago

Right...I had to get up at 10:00 at night ½ an hour before I went to bed. Drink a cup of sulfuric acid. Work 29 hours a day at the mill, and I'm paying them for permission to go to work. And when I got home my kids would kill me and dance about on my grave singing hallelujah.

[–]Slimeaux05 0 points1 point ago

Hopefully you're at least deployed and getting paid bro. Our Field Mess guys all work on Main Side we have all these toothless civilians in our Chow Hall. Keep up the good work.

[–]cobaltgiant 0 points1 point ago

The next logical step is someone who didn't go to bed and pulled all-nighter.

[–]ndrew452 0 points1 point ago

Why do you go to bed at 10pm? I don't understand this. You should be going to bed between 7-8pm.

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 0 points1 point ago

Because we are still serving supper till 1930 most nights. Then we start the clean up.

[–]ndrew452 0 points1 point ago

So you work 18 hour days? That has to violate some sort of regulation.

[–]HurricaneHurdler 1 point2 points ago

Right. I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad and our mother would kill us and dance about on our graves singing Hallelujah.

[–]thedesertfox25 0 points1 point ago

cooks always do get the short of the end stick.

[–]freakykukki 0 points1 point ago

sad thing is my roommates go to bed before you and wake up at 9am!

[–]sgtpandybear 0 points1 point ago

My dad works for a newspaper company. He wakes up every morning at 1AM to go chuck papers out of his car, in rain, sleet, snow, any sort of weather. People always want their newspaper when they wake up in the morning and if they don't have it than they get mad. He has modified various cars to make rolling them, stuffing them in bags, storing them, and throwing them out of the window easier and more efficient. He also has a bad back and you would be surprised what chucking papers around (especially the Sunday paper) does to an already bad back. I have a lot of respect for my dad, especially considering he manages to get stuff done during the day too!

[–]Kaerevek 0 points1 point ago

You sleep three hours and forty five minutes a night? I'm not sure I buy that... or if that is even possible? For an extended period of time.

[–]idma 0 points1 point ago

I was waiting for the " with a cactus" follow up

[–]retrobuddha 0 points1 point ago

that's what you get for joining the military

[–]OcularLiceScene 0 points1 point ago

Give 'em what-fer, Cookie.

[–]the13bangbang 0 points1 point ago

A cook complaining about heating up nasty food?! Really?! How bout going to bed at 12 a.m. only to be woken up for fire missions at 1 a.m. (guess the range was still fucking hot after they said it was cold...), then getting a check fire for a half an hour only to finish shooting at 2 a.m. At least we got to sleep in till 6:30 a.m.!

[–]the13bangbang 0 points1 point ago

Oh yeah, an air conditioned trailer isn't the field by the way. We had guys volunteering to do K.P. duty just to sleep in the air conditioning, this past A.T. lol

[–]Tarijeno 0 points1 point ago

I have all these pansy "I have to wake up sometime after midnight" complaints beat. 2 all-nighters in a row BITCHES!

[–]BuddyFriendGuy 0 points1 point ago

I like how it says 'fuck you' AND 'go fuck yourself'. If I could I would use the quadratic equation for this.

[–]Roomy 0 points1 point ago

Is that once a week? Because a human being can't actually operate on 3 hours of sleep a night for very long. I really hope that isn't something you have to do often. I always thought the people who had to cook for the battalion had to be up super early like that, but always thought they'd be going to bed earlier, too, like a third shift workforce at any other job. Having one group need to get up at 1:45 have to go to bed at the same time as everyone else seems so cruel, heh. Good luck, guy.

[–]mistahnuff 1 point2 points ago

No one gives a shit.

[–]nodnarbiter -2 points-1 points ago

I call your story bullshit... Cooking for up to 1000 people at 1:45 in the morning with a little under 4 hours of sleep... And your on reddit?

[–]xaoq 0 points1 point ago

I see your shitty hours. So I'll just let you all know, I work at home, wake up at 12-1pm, spend most of the day watching movies or playing games. Being sysadmin is awesome. The better I am the less I have to work. My systems are almost conscious now so I have very little to do.

[–]sraolson -2 points-1 points ago

If this is even true..that's your fucking fault. Go to bed earlier.

[–]Jackal0pe[S] 0 points1 point ago

It's the army, I don't get to set my schedule.

[–]turkeylaser -2 points-1 points ago

See, kids? This is why you should do well in school.

[–]ser_dhusti 0 points1 point ago

YEAH WELL ONE TIME I DIDN'T EVEN FUCKING SLEEP CUZ OF PATROLS AND COMBAT AND GUNS

Seriously, can we stop the dick-measuring contest? If not, you'll have to excuse me while I go grab a meterstick.

[–]UCRsSon -3 points-2 points ago

Im going to post this multiple times hoping it doesn't get buried. Would you be willing to do an AMA? I would love to hear about your job and how you got to this point. Just a few questions to start you off would be: What branch? What training did you go through? What is a normal day for you? How long have you been serving?
