It isn't narcolepsy, she is having a seizure, she ended up having half of her brain removed. But she is a normal kid now, pretty cool.

[–]DudeAsh 736 points737 points ago

I have narcolepsy, and this is what hollywood has made people think it does to people. While it's funny, it's really annoying explaining to people that I don't just fall asleep at odd/random moments.

Jimmy Kimmel has narcolepsy, he describes it as, "With narcolepsy, just the inside of your head is tired. It's like somebody's gently sitting on your brain. You have almost no focus. All you're thinking about is not falling asleep."

You just think about sleeping... all god damn day.

Narcoleptic here; If you think you might have it, get tested. It goes undiagnosed in > 3/4 of people who have it.

http://www.umm.edu/patiented/articles/how_narcolepsy_diagnosed_000098_5.htm

[–]thoughttrainderailed 20 points21 points ago

If the other 3/4 stay un-diagnosed, how do the people making the statistics know they have it?

[–]Perryn 14 points15 points ago

There's a mechanism in statistics for scientific and precisely calculated guessing.

[–]miscommunication_me 23 points24 points ago

I've always joked that I'm narcoleptic because I LITERALLY can not stay awake in certain situations (afternoon classes/meetings, etc.) Also, I just read that narcoleptics experience hallucinations in between sleep attacks. I experience this a lot. I once had a snake tell me that it was ok to fall asleep during class, no one's watching.

[–]sleepdraw 6 points7 points ago

I get this on public transport if I'm on it around 3 - 4 pm. I literally CANNOT stay awake, it sucks. I used to get it in class sometimes, too. This one teacher snapped his fingers in front of my face and looked super pissed. It's not like you just think "well, this class sucks, let's fall asleep!", I probably worked harder than anyone else in the room to stay focused on what he was saying.

How does one become diagnosed with narcolepsy? I fear I have it. This is not some "Oh I read this post about feeling sleepy all the time and now I think I have narcolepsy" either. I feel extremely sleepy when ever listening to people speaking or music that is at a consistent tempo. Driving makes me sleepy. Paying attention in class is very hard and nearly impossible if I've eaten within an hour of class. I failed trig in HS because of this reason. Retook it at a different time and was just fine. So just wondering how one finds out for sure if they have it. I've suspected for some time that I may have it and my mother and sister have reported similar symptoms.

[–]crazedgremlin 16 points17 points ago

You need to go to the doctor and they will perform a sleep study. They hook you up to machines and record your body's activities while you sleep. One of the criteria has something to do with how fast you go into REM sleep, which IIRC tends to be very quickly if you have narcolepsy.

[–]DudeAsh 6 points7 points ago

This was my reply in a PM:

It's a sleep/nap study that finds it. Someone with narcolepsy spends far too much time in REM sleep, so the brain never gets proper rest. In my nap study, I hit REM sleep in 7-9 minutes after falling asleep, 4 out the 5 times I was given the opportunity to nap.

EDIT: I really wonder how I have accomplished what I have with narcolepsy... college, military, and now grad school. I'm 32, and I was only diagnosed until this year. Adderall, it's a hell of a drug!

[–]StarVixen 7 points8 points ago

Would that only be at bedtime? Or during naps as well?

I can have a dream that feels like it's been a half hour, but yet I've only been asleep for 4-5 minutes.

It's really weird and can cause a lot of confusion, but my sleep is always like that.

[–]Catheter 5 points6 points ago

Naps can initiate REM.

If it causes you no problem, though, then don't waste your time going to the doctor.

[–]ambiguousexualcoment 1 point2 points ago

What they do is perform a sleep study to see how long it takes you to fall asleep and how often/for how long you enter the different stages of sleep. Then, you will probably have an MSLT or "nap test" which is essentially an all day test in which you are allowed 20 minutes for naps with 2 hours in between. What they look for is exactly how fast you fall asleep and enter REM during these naps, which for a narcoleptic person is very quick.

[–]dionysian 3 points4 points ago

have you considered apnea? my husband had all those symptoms, and it turned out he has wicked severe apnea. he had NO idea he had it, of course, was not conscious of his sleeping or waking. a sleep test found he was having stopped breathing episodes every two minutes. he has progressively become quite depressed/lethargic in the past two years due to it, and could be described as functionally narcoleptic.

[–]NextDayAir 9 points10 points ago

talk to your doctor about it and have a sleep study done. you just may not be getting enough good sleep. I had/have this same problem. it could be sleep apnea as well. Personally, I think I have both. I even went as far as getting the uppp and tonsilectomy for the sleep apnea but it doesn't seem to have worked well enough. (yes, I have no dangly bits in my mouth anymore) so after seeing this I may revisit the issue with my doctor about narcolepsy.

but most importantly, talk to your doctor about it and ask about the possibility of your issue being either apnea or narcolepsy.

[–]snocreature4life 2 points3 points ago

No doctor here, but I did the tests and came back as having " excessive daytime sleepiness". This is we're you are how you described, but apparently do not go into R.E.M. as much as someone with narcalepsy. I did the test with the sleep study. Make sure if you do as well you do not have a beard. I do and it was hard for them to place the right sensors on my face. This lead to a bad reading and sensors falling off all night. They will come in and put them back on, but I leads to false data, and incorrect results. I got a second opinion that I was more serious then E.D.S. from 2 other doctors a d they recommended I retake the sleep test. The reason i'm telling you this, is even with the health care I have, it costs me roughly $2,300 per study, and to have one fail like it did means you can loose a lot of good money fast for no reason at all. Hope that helps.

[–]MikesWastedLife 7 points8 points ago

I have narcolepsy, diagnosed by my Neurologist. He specializes in sleep disorders. I participated in multiple sleep studies. You sleep in a special room for a night while hooked up to various monitoring equipment. Pending the results of that sleep study you will then do another sleep study, which is the same thing plus what's called a "nap test" the day after.

Every couple hours you will try to nap and they measure how fast you fall asleep and if/when you enter REM sleep. They use the results of this test to help with the diagnosis.

There are other symptoms as well, see webmd article.

[–]wintercast 10 points11 points ago

i sometimes question how easy it is to fall asleep during a sleep study. I sometimes have a hard time in a strange bed. But man, put me in a cool, dark room at work and i can fall alseep way to easily. More so since there is a constant white noise of the air handler in the background.

[–]FlyingSkyWizard 5 points6 points ago

Now glue 12 electrodes do your body and about 20 to your skull and stick a gas analysis tube up your nose

Try going to sleep with that

I had no problems falling asleep even with all that crap due to actual narcolepsy

[–]Eden-licious 0 points1 point ago

Man that nose thing fucking tickled like hell.

[–]Accidental_Ouroboros 6 points7 points ago

Honestly, if you fear you have it, and you have health insurance of any sort - go to your general practitioner. Then tell them you are feeling tired all the time. They will present you with The Epworth Sleepiness Scale. Even if you don't score high, but have continuous sleepiness for a long period of time, you will likely get a referral to a sleep specialist.

If you are sleepy no matter how much sleep you get (as in, you can sleep 8-10 hours and still be sleepy), then you probably have some sort of sleep disorder, OR are narcoleptic.

Assuming you progress to a sleep study, they will have you stay overnight and into the next day and monitor your sleep. The night-time stuff is where they screen for things that disturb sleep (apnea, etc). The next day, they do maintenance of wakefulness and other tests to see if the issue might be related to narcolepsy. The way they find out here is if, when they offer you nap periods, you fall asleep too quickly, and enter into the REM stage too quickly - this is a strong sign of narcolepsy.

There are different forms of narcolepsy, not just the one with cataplexy or the "cartoon" type narcolepsy. You may have it.

The good news is, if you do have it, provigil just went generic, and nuvigil works very well (it is more expensive, but you might get a discount card, and it helps if you have good insurance). There are a good number of low-grade narcoleptics that have been diagnosed with ADD (not ADHD) due to inability to focus - it is a very common symptom.

Edit: Funny thing about the ADD diagnosis - things like adderall (read: amphetamine) worked just fine with people with narcolepsy, because that was the drug class used before provigil came out to treat it. It just has more side-effects.

[–]chixor1 0 points1 point ago

I'm so sick of seeing those Epworh Sleepiness scales, I had to do one every single time I attended an appointment, even when I was just picking up my Actiwatch that I had to wear for a few weeks prior to the PSG and MSLT's. By the time I was finished I think I must have filled out about 12.

[–]fenrisulfur 0 points1 point ago

Yup I don't have it, scored a big fat zero on all accounts

[–]ShoddyRapInBlue 1 point2 points ago

if you're tired after eating, check into your diet and your long term diabetic markers (A1c, etc).

sometimes things are related sometimes they aren't. Having an unrelated symptom doesn't discount other conditions, but sometimes there are other explanations when you ungroup things.

I have MS and narcolepsy. My life is very interesting.

[–]FUS_ROALD_DAHL 1 point2 points ago

I believe it's been mentioned already, but please go to a sleep clinic and get tested. You may have sleep apnea which is causing your brain to "wake up" over and over throughout the night, preventing restful REM sleep. If you snore this is even more likely.

Your symptoms sound exactly like mine - I would fall asleep uncontrollably in meetings and classrooms and nothing I could do would keep me awake. I would pinch myself, bite my tongue, nothing. At the urging of my gf, I went to a sleep doctor and got tested, finding out I had obstructive sleep apnea and was having literally hundreds of episodes per night where I would stop breathing, causing my brain to wake up.

They put me on a CPAP which I wear every night and since then things are so much better. If I get a good 7+ hours of rest and use the machine, I never have excessive daytime sleepiness. More energy and mental clarity compared to before as well. OSA can lead to high blood pressure and other bad stuff too. Please go get tested.

[–]lesuje 1 point2 points ago

I made a reply to another post about sleep apnea. It's worth looking into it, it will make you constantly tired.

[–]play3393 21 points22 points ago

You're just unhealthy.

[–]Hristix 0 points1 point ago

A general practitioner doctor will be able to point you in the right direction and you can go from there. I always get my psych words confused, but you'll probably see a psychiatrist or psychologist, and end up going to a sleep specialist from there who will run tests. There are different levels of narcolepsy for sure, but the main goal is to rule out other possibilities, like not getting enough REM sleep at night or having it be too broken up to really matter.

When I was in middle school or so I had a lot of the problems you describe, but it was because I had trouble sleeping at bed time, and by the time I actually got into good restful sleep mode it was time to wake up and go to school. I slept through about half of my classes.

[–]Walletau 2 points3 points ago

Are you unfit?

[–]HalfRetardHalfAmazin 2 points3 points ago

So... adderall? Or does that just increase your ability to focus on nothing but thinking about sleep?

Edit: "Or does that just increase your ability to focus on nothing but thinking about sleep?" was a joke. But thanks for all of the legitimate replies.

[–]Hristix 7 points8 points ago

Adderall is an amphetamine and so will generally function to keep you awake and alert, but there might be better options for treatment because long term treatment with an amphetamine is a risky proposition.

[–]HalfRetardHalfAmazin 4 points5 points ago

It was a joke.

But thank you for giving me a legitimate response to my joke, rather than typing to me like I'm an idiot.

[–]Hristix 0 points1 point ago

Ahh, well I'm a bit of a med nerd so I've read up a lot on the commonly abused recreational drugs to see what makes them tick, so to speak. It's hilarious watching college students take Adderall so they can stay up all night and study, and then ending up cracking out on Kongregate all night while trying to pick the invisible bugs off their skin.

[–]HalfRetardHalfAmazin 1 point2 points ago

It's hilarious watching college students take Adderall so they can stay up all night and study, and then ending up cracking out on Kongregate all night

Adderall is great, but you have to use it correctly...

If you're going to use it to study, take it, begin studying and it'll eventually kick in. You will continue to stay focused on your work and not get distracted.

However, if you take it and start doing random shit while waiting for it to kick in, you really don't have much of an ability to choose to direct your focus after it hits your system. Even if you're experienced in taking it for a long time, it's easy to say "fuck it" and continue gaming or browsing Reddit after you took it specifically to study.

pick the invisible bugs off their skin.

I don't think that's Adderall.

[–]sweetberrywine 0 points1 point ago

[–]Fancy_Pantsu 1 point2 points ago

So...that period of my day between about 1pm and 7pm when I lose focus, feel like my brain is a heavy wet towel, and my arms and legs feel heavy and uncoordinated might be narcolepsy?

[–]krahzee 0 points1 point ago

I would like to be to narcolepsy what Camille Grammer is to irritable-bowel syndrome.

LOL!

[–]ShoddyRapInBlue 0 points1 point ago

I can sleep any time. If its at all dim or dark, it's a constant struggle. When my head hits the pillow, even if I've had coffee, I can be asleep in under a minute or two most of the time.

If I'm driving in the dark for too long (hour or so) it becomes a fight to stay awake and I start nodding no matter how hard I try or what I drink or how cold the air is or how much sleep I've had.

Most people can do an all nighter or stay up a full 24 hours if they have to, but when I get much over 12 hours, my body will put me to sleep one way or another, otherwise it is basically worthless for me to be awake because I can't do anything except try to stay awake.

When I am asleep, people (read: my wife) usually can do things (read: tickle, slobber on, etc) to me and I don't wake up.

When I wake up, it often takes everything I have to get up and stay up. I'll often turn off multiple alarms and go back to sleep and have no recollection, even when I have important things. I simply won't be aware of it and will turn off the alarms anyway. Lately I've resorted to an alarm app that requires doing math to turn it off.

[–]RockingTheRitz 1 point2 points ago

I don't know.. that may be in slight cases of narcolepsy. On the science channel, they were doing a piece on brain disorders, IIRC, and it was pretty much almost like in the gif. Anytime the guy got slightly excited or tried to move very suddenly, he would just go to sleep and fall down anywhere he was standing up.

I will try to find source when I get back home and have the time.

[–]_Kline 4 points5 points ago

Hail, fellow narcoleptic. Wish there were some more good subeddits / boards / websites in general about the subject. My sleep doc pinged me with both narcolepsy and insomnia; it's odd to say the least...

Jimmy Kimmel's description is spot on. I'm fortunate enough that Nuvigil works well (most of the time) for me and man, the first day on that stuff was like I was finally alive again. Years of drowning myself in coffee and energy drinks thinking "I just need to go to bed a bit earlier" and still feeling like crap. It's amazing to say I can happily drink water and haven't had an energy drink or coffee in an effort to stay awake in over a year.

[–]poprocksandwings 3 points4 points ago

My sister took required naps throughout her junior and highschool years. She went to school till 1pm(red bull and mountain dew in hand), came home and slept till 6, ate dinner, did homework and back to sleep. It was very difficult for the entire family, as my parents did not want her on medication. But now she is able to manage it by ensuring she gets her naps in and not overloading herself. She quit the energy drinks after high school and goes to a local university.

[–]MikesWastedLife 2 points3 points ago

Glad you found help with Nuvigil. I had anxiety attacks when I tried it. I take ritalin, but it makes me feel sick a lot of the time.

How are you when driving? I must take ritalin 30 minutes before I drive or I just can't stay awake. It's really scary. Sometimes it doesn't work and I have to pull off of the road, take more, and wait to start driving again. I always carry it with me.

I have insomnia too, but it's caused by methadone I take for very severe RLS. It's torture sometimes. Do you have crazy hallucinations during the sleep attacks? I enter such crazy states between awake and asleep. I don't know how to describe it. I often "come to" not knowing if I was actually asleep or just day dreaming. It's starting to drive me mad.

[–]shadowman42 2 points3 points ago

Well that's just amazing.

[–]yabacam 16 points17 points ago

She had half her brain removed and is still a normal kid? Damn. That is crazy technology/science there. I would assume having only 1/2 a brain would cause some problems.

[–]Roboticide 18 points19 points ago

It's called a hemispherectomy. And while it is pretty cool that science allows us to do that without killing someone, I think the real awesome thing is that the brain/body can pick up the entire load with only half the brain to do it. Kind of funny how resilient and adaptive our bodies can be.

[–]exactomacto 3 points4 points ago

It also has to do with the age of the person. Young people have greater brain plasticity, which allows the brain to take over whatever was lost in the removal. When you get older, it gets much more difficult. It also proves that the "left-brain, right-brain" theory is not really true.

[–]jadenray64 4 points5 points ago

I think it's called neuroplasticity. It means that your brain knows how to adapt, especially at such a young age when those pathways are still being built. Seizures are sometimes (maybe always I can't recall) caused by signals going crazy between the two halves of the brain. So get rid of one half, no more electrical storms to cause problems. The body even fills the empty space with fluid so your remaining brain doesn't move.

source: high school psychology and a lifetime of watching discovery health?

[–]TBS96 3 points4 points ago

I saw a documentary about a dude who had half of his brain removed. He was good at mathematics, but he sucked at english and writing and all that. Probably was that part they removed.

[–]strobexp 2 points3 points ago

See I'd be afraid to post something to reddit and be wrong.

[–]TERRiBEAR 81 points82 points ago

She doesn't have narcolepsy. She has a thing where she has multiple seizures every day and has had half of her brain removed. The video where this gif came from is on youtube. I'm pretty sure this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MKNsI5CWoU is a video taken some time after that original video.

[–]Not_Invited 27 points28 points ago

Holy shit that is crazy cool! I'm so glad she's okay, how amazing is science :)

[–]GODDAMNFOOL 3 points4 points ago

Except, you know, for not finding a way around having to remove half her brain. I imagine that's going to have an impact in the future.

[–]Szechwan 17 points18 points ago

You'd be surprised. Exponentially less impact than having severe seizures every day.

[–]lazyslacker 15 points16 points ago

I'm kind of annoyed that they didn't mention the surgeon who performed the operation, instead billing it as a "miracle". Characterize it how you want, but at least acknowledge the skillful surgeon(s) that made your daughter's recovery possible. Hell I wouldn't even mind it if you want to say it was god's influence that made the surgeon's skill possible, but at least say their names, or acknowledge the surgical team as a whole or something. They're not robots.

edit: I'm curious about why I'm being downvoted. You're entitled to your opinion but if you disagree with me I'd like to know why. Help me out. Just tryin' to figure out where you're coming from.

Narcolepsy can be humorous actually. My grandfather had it and when he'd fall asleep in his chair we'd see how many spoons we could hang off of his face. I think our record was 6.

He was ok with it. He'd always ask, 'how many spoons that time?'.

[–]sweetberrywine 8 points9 points ago

I agree, and as a narcoleptic myself I hope I end up with a boss like her's.

[–]LollyLewd 3 points4 points ago

Stopping to take naps doesn't affect job performance?

[–]bigcitycrows 4 points5 points ago

All through highschool I had teachers who would either get pissed off and threaten me or just sigh and give me mark-offs for sleeping in class, until my senior year my Economics professor noticed that I slept a lot, so he gave me permission to sit in a padded chair off to the side of the room and use the newspaper stacks as pillows.

No longer fighting the imminent sleep constantly while swaying in my seat, I was able to just rotate, lay down, sleep for 10 minutes, and wake up. I got my assignments in and wasn't stressed, I ended up in the top 5 in the class.

tl;dr being nice to narcoleptics increases productivity.

My son has a seizure disorder, but he isnt a surgical candidate. It's super shitty seeing children endure this.

[–]slaythebad 69 points70 points ago

"Oh shit this kid's having a seizure, let me slowly put this board game away first"

[–]KptKrondog 25 points26 points ago

not much you can do to a person having a seizure...They can inject you with a muscle relaxer if it's the violent type (grand mal), but it's not really necessary unless you're hurting yourself...When it's over you're just super tired and go to sleep for a while.

[–]dudemann 3 points4 points ago

I gotta put it out there- there's a ton more you can do besides watch and giggle. I have a friend who's been through a few fun ones and he's ended up bruised and has had memory lapses with no idea as to why he's black and blue. Sure, a grown person sitting in a chair or something might be fine, but when you have toddlers who go from zero to floor-ty and can seriously hurt themselves, it's a better idea to gently restrain them than to just flop around... drugs aside, that is.

[–]cleverseneca 12 points13 points ago

zero to floor-ty

I know its a serious problem and not to be laughed at but I giggled so hard at that phrase.

[–]KptKrondog 3 points4 points ago

I know you can restrain them, I was meaning in that situation...Sitting on the floor, there's not a much better place to be. All she could really have done would be to lay her flat, which is a hard to do with a seizing person because they're all tensed up.

[–]jsz 34 points35 points ago

I'm expecting a video of this to appear online with the drop from a Skrillex song right when she hits the ground.

[–]fartpoopandpee 43 points44 points ago

[–]Quadforce 3 points4 points ago

[–]sociallyblonde 3 points4 points ago

If that is not a seizure, it is cataplexy. I have narcolepsy with cataplexy, but it is not the same.

[–]OhBlackWater 3 points4 points ago

I am not narcoleptic but I have done this.

[–]Bluebraid 1 point2 points ago

...have you seen a lot of roofies take effect?

[–]sh8af 1 point2 points ago

If you think you have narcolepsy schedule an appointment with a neurologist. Then he can set you up with a sleep study where they can see if you have any number of sleep disorders including narcolepsy.

edit: This is in response to the numerous posts by people thinking they have it and not knowing what to do next.

[–]poprocksandwings 1 point2 points ago

My sister has narcolepsy and was bullied all throughout high school. Her teacher even bullied her so much, I damn near put my paws on her. I was so pissed off that a teacher who is supposed to be protecting her, was actually one of her bullies.

[–]Mayday246 1 point2 points ago

I only have one memory about narcolepsy. I once saw a comedy movie/tv-show (don't remember what it was), in which the main caracter had narcolepsy. She was really into S&M with her husband, and was convinced narcolepsy wasn't a problem for having a good sex life. One day she tied him up with a gag ball, buttplug and several other stuff, and then just fell asleep for hours. I would really like to watch that again, it was golden.

[–]keridoll 1 point2 points ago

Poor kid :(

[–]blacktacotaco 1 point2 points ago

She just wanted to get a much closer look at what she was doing.

Rusty falls asleep when trying to do other things.

[–]ukyah 1 point2 points ago

i know this little girls story and she's not narcoleptic. it's much more fascinating than that actually. they removed an entire hemisphere of her brain in an attempt to heal her, and it seemed to have worked. she spoke quite eloquently.

[–]Christ 1 point2 points ago

Go on

(make with a link, Jack)

[–]Aleksander73 1 point2 points ago

Sad stuff.

[–]CHAAAZZZZ 1 point2 points ago

she just fell asleep so aggressively.

[–]snidely_mustached 1 point2 points ago

Is she part fainting goat?

[–]policeAcademy3 1 point2 points ago

well that sucks

[–]Narkolepse -1 points0 points ago

I can confirm this is not narcolepsy.

[–]outcastspice 1 point2 points ago

I used to have a friend who dated a girl with narcolepsy, triggered by flashing lights. One time we were having a picnic. Friend and Girlfriend were sitting in the middle of the table (people on either side), across from each other.

Someone took a photo, the flash went off. Friend was out of his seat and around the table fast enough to catch Girlfriend before her head hit the table. It was a real Batman move.

[–]apcharlick -1 points0 points ago

Oh I....must not....Laugh....

[–]guignoleyes 1 point2 points ago

Has anyone Magikarp'd this yet?

[–]The_Ginger_Link 1 point2 points ago

I boop the floor BOOP

[–]brussels4breakfast 2 points3 points ago

I watched a documentary about a British man who has narcolepsy. He had to have someone live with him because he fell asleep constantly. He said that laughter and excitement sets it off and when asked about having sex he laughed and fell asleep.

[–]PokeyOats 4 points5 points ago

I had a terrible sleep problem. I am not saying it was narcolepsy, but I could literally be at work and fall asleep mid sentence when typing an email. I would often wake up with no idea what happened and a string of characters on the screen in the email. This happened regularly, anywhere, anytime!

It was so bad I would even start dozing on a motorbike on the FREEWAY!

I was getting plenty of sleep and didn't know what was going on. Doctor's gave me Vyvance, and that worked for a while but is horribly addictive and the dosage kept having to be upped.

I am, however, now cured. Here's how.

IT WAS MY TEETH! I know this sounds crazy but a couple of root canals and a crown later and I no longer have this sleep problem.

From what I understand, the toxins from rotting teeth was getting into my system and weakening me/making me sleepy.

My life is completely changed because of this and I adore not falling asleep all the time now!

So, if any of you are having this problem, seriously, try getting your teeth checked. You don't have to have tooth pain to need a root canal!

[–]TomatosauceTheMessia 1 point2 points ago

FYI This is why our ancestors made up God and the Devil. We know better today, don't we?

[–]Typhoid_Evan 1 point2 points ago

Upvoted because your username vaguely reminds me of this gif...which is morbid as hell.

[–]WolfNippleChips -1 points0 points ago

I was going to say the same thing about this not being Narcolepsy, My grandfather had it and I remember him nodding off, never passing out. I also had a co-worker who had it, and was given perscription speed, you could always tell when he didn't take it.

[–]Kauppaneuvos -1 points0 points ago

Phew, its good that you said its gif, wouldn't had notice it.

[–]nowgetbacktowork -1 points0 points ago

Siezure. Not narcolepsy. This little girl had half her brain removed to fix this!

[–]robroy911zx -1 points0 points ago

Dude I used to work with would fall asleep in the middle of typing in a work ticket. When the phone would ring he would hit update. Some of his tickets had pages and pages of one letter. Imaging sitting next to someone using an old console based as400 system and hearing" clicks, click, ding ... ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding ... fell asleep in the middle of typing. Hilarious.

[–]yesukai -2 points-1 points ago

Haha! Wait... this isn't /r/funny. Maybe it should be in /r/imgoingtohellforthis .

[–]keith_weaver -1 points0 points ago

I'm callin BS on this one. I went to school with a boy that had this and in the rare times it happened, he just went limp or softly slumped over. I'm not an expert, but this just appears contrived. I'm not sure to what end, but in America today, it's OK to exploit your kids as long as you get on TV.

[–]money_house -1 points0 points ago

No problem falling asleep waiting for that gif to load.

[–]DonkeyPunchTheGalaxy -1 points0 points ago

People, how are we on the topic of narcolepsy and not talking about Rusty, the dachshund who falls asleep when he's trying to do other things? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zVCYdrw-1o

[–]Davethe3rd -1 points0 points ago

I'm going to hell for laughing at this, aren't I?

[–]wall_time -1 points0 points ago

for some reason I thought necrophilia. I am disappointed in /WTF.

[–]JJinVenice -1 points0 points ago

I thought she just really loved her puzzle and wanted to hug it.

[–]Chango99 -1 points0 points ago

Interesting reading through the thread. I think I might have narcolepsy. I am a person who goes to the gym 5x a week and eats healthy, so I don't think "health" is an issue. I can sleep for hours, but I often wake up during my 7-9 hour sleep to get up and piss. During class or other work I do, I often start falling asleep. Seriously, I tend to miss half an hour to almost all of lecture because of my constant sleepiness. I sometimes manage to stay up all of it but I don't know the pattern. The sleepiness would always be there no matter how long I've been in bed. The worst part is driving. When I'm sleepy but I need to get home... well yea. I remember trying to hard to stay awake one time I started seeing flashes of white every time I blinked.

[–]BrothaBeejus -1 points0 points ago

I'm going to hell

[–]TLKoontz -1 points0 points ago

That poor girl!

(I hope they don't ever let her get a drivers license.)

[–]juggernaut2g -1 points0 points ago

I always think of This when anyone talks about narcolepsy

[–]lucidlemming -1 points0 points ago

Even if this WERE her falling asleep, that's not just Narcolepsy. That would be something called Cataplexy which is what you see with people that randomly fall asleep or Rusty the Narcoleptic Dog (check it out on youtube). My girlfriend has Narcolepsy and while she doesn't suddenly fall asleep she is plagued with extreme, I mean extreme exhaustion. It's very sad actually, because she is such a smart and beautiful girl.

EDIT: btw, I re read it and I didn't mean for this to sound like a sob story at all. Just saying something about narcolepsy.

I opened up the link in a new tab, saw the gif, laughed, then read the title. I am a horrible person.

[–]Karmakerosene -1 points0 points ago

I've seen the video this was taken from. The little girl had to have half of her brain removed and lived. She also seemed quite normal in the interview that it included. I'm not sure if she's still alive, but I assume she is!

My little sister, my dad and my grandfather all have/had narcolepsy and I have never witness either my dad or sister just falling asleep like this - My grandfather died before I was born because he walked into the road and was hit by a log truck.

This is exactly what I do when my wife starts talking

[–]Lockski 1 point2 points ago

Yeah people with narcolepsy don't just drop in sleep. They are just always tired and they will find places to lay down to sleep. This is closer to epilepsy, but I am not sure what kind of medical problem it is since I don't remember hearing of seizures causing someone to just drop into a relaxed state.

[–]Kcmhs13 0 points1 point ago

It's like the bar above the today is loading her seizure
