Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

[–]almost-irish 660 points661 points ago

Incorrect. CMYK.

[–]ivanmarsh 125 points126 points ago

You ever work with any of the six color printers? They are insane.

[–]almost-irish 105 points106 points ago

Yeah we have a large one at our office, the prints are a-ma-zing.

[–]ivanmarsh 92 points93 points ago

It's like watching reality being constructed a line at a time.

[–]almost-irish 44 points45 points ago

Definitely. It's almost magical when it prints a really large (like 6 foot wide) image.

[–]ivanmarsh 20 points21 points ago

Yep... I ran the print test shop for a laminator manufacturer and got to play with all the cool new 60 inch printers and mediums and then got to test our laminators on them.

[–]neverfindausername 11 points12 points ago

Industrial printing R&D =D

[–]neverfindausername 39 points40 points ago

I work with 3-5m wide printers. With up to 7 colours.

I have some impressive prints, to say the least. (Totally blew my first post being excited about my new job too. Dammit, now I have to find some cat pics to post to feel like I belong)

[–]ivanmarsh 24 points25 points ago

7 Color? What the hell is the color spread on a 7 color? I didn't even know those existed.

[–]neverfindausername 37 points38 points ago

CMYKlclm + White.

They don't "technically" exist....yet

[–]abledanger 108 points109 points ago

Why the secrecy? Are you worried terrorists will discover your technology and print visually stunning propaganda?

[–]this_man_loves_trees 94 points95 points ago

Hatred, in all colors of the spectrum

[–]Uphoria 24 points25 points ago

the mechanical tech is probably not complete and therefore not patented fully, and letting the design or spirit go to a competitor ruins their edge.

[–]neverfindausername 12 points13 points ago

Yes, and terrorize us with its beauty.

I already have to wear a helmet to work to keep my mind from being blown.

[–]ohmage 3 points4 points ago

They've existed for years. The white is used as either a replacement for white substrate when printing on clear or colored substrate or as a highlight color for the same applications.

[–]DerekC1990 3 points4 points ago

Many times colors will also be replaced with things like Varnishes.

[–]croatmick 6 points7 points ago

You must have loved dial-up.

[–]abandonnez 39 points40 points ago

I seriously just made this to respond to your comment.

What episode is this from? I don't remember the blonde girl.

[–]abandonnez 9 points10 points ago

It's from Season 2 Episode 7 - Movie Star

[–]RainDownMyBlues 2 points3 points ago

Thank you sir.

[–]PreFapUrges 3 points4 points ago

bah, I was going to post this but then I scrolled down and saw you. Bah, posting it anyway

[–]froderick 30 points31 points ago

Damnit, you and those below you are talking about these printers that go beyond CMYK, but no one is providing any goddamn links or references. I don't know shit about printers, I don't know what to Google to find out more. How about someone fucking help me out here?

[–]OystersAreEvil 25 points26 points ago

The HP Z3200 has 12 inks (blue, green, magenta, red, yellow, grey, photo black, matte black, light cyan, light grey, light magenta, gloss enhancer). No cyan! There are others, but I know this one off the top of my head because there's one at the company I work for. We're also looking into something that prints white and silver, which is made by Mimaki and/or Roland.

[–]Mazo 87 points88 points ago

Printing paused. Light magenta is low.

On a black and white document.

[–]jtdc 42 points43 points ago

Fuck you HP. Fuck you right in the eye

[–]EltaninAntenna 2 points3 points ago

This is why it's hard to feel bad for HP.

[–]neverfindausername 12 points13 points ago

[–]ivanmarsh 4 points5 points ago

The first one I worked with was a 5100...

HP Designjet Large Format

http://h10088.www1.hp.com/gap/download/Designjet%20brochure_AP.pdf

[–]mildiii 5 points6 points ago

Ah the trusty 5100. I used to unplug that shit from the network right into my laptop and print whatever the hell I wanted for free.

[–]ophanim 6 points7 points ago

It can get upwards of 12. You'll get 3 shades for the normal primary (either extra light, light, and normal or light, normal, and dark), black, pink, and blue. Sometimes it will be cymk + rgb, which are just remixed cym that better mimic rgb.

Printing is really awesome if you can get past the shitty chain stores.

[–]lurked2long 4 points5 points ago

If you can get past the shitty home printers, ink and bloated fucking drivers.

[–]redditor0621 48 points49 points ago

Artist's website. It's called an "RGB Colorspace Atlas." It also has a much larger gamut than CMYK alone is capable of producing. Nobody actually thinks you can print using the Red Green Blue additive color process.

[–]grimkriz 9 points10 points ago

my eyes!!! dat font is like comic sans times two thousand three hundred and fifty six!

[–]Speedingturtle 12 points13 points ago

I had no idea what you were talking about until those strange symbols turned out to be words.

[–]xyroclast 36 points37 points ago

Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, KLACK!!!

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points ago

Joking aside, before black ink, everything was printed in CMY. Then someone got an idea to add more contrast and punch by adding black. It's called the "key" color in CMYK, hence the letter K.

[–]Forensicunit 7 points8 points ago

Is that what graphic designers use to make my flyer pop more?

[–]GeneralButtNaked2012 1 point2 points ago

Couldn't use B 'cause B is for blue so they made up some bullshit story and used K

[–]ZombieAcademy 26 points27 points ago

I think RGB means the book is a cubic representation of the 3D RGB colorspace, in which each page is a slice. Not how it was actually printed.

[–]chris-colour 1 point2 points ago

But even then, as soon as it's printed it exists in subtractive colour space, not additive - it'll always be CMYK unless it's a light-emitting object.

[–]pants_means_trousers 3 points4 points ago

That's not what he means, the way the colours are arranged on each page in the book represent RGP colourspace.

Imagine you have a model of the molecular structure of aluminium from a science lab say, but the model is made out of Iron. You could say the model will always be Iron, but what it represents is Aluminium.

[–]ZombieAcademy 3 points4 points ago

Physical objects don't exist in any colorspace. "Colorspace" is a mathematical model that is only relevant in the abstract. "RGB" or "CMYK" are meaningful when you are trying to specify a color numerically to a printer or a computer.

It's like latitude/longitude coordinates on a map. They can be used to map and sort an abstraction of the Earth, but that's not to say we exist in lat/long space.

[–]p4lm3r 26 points27 points ago

This. Even the best Heidelberg 6 color digital presses are encumbered by profiles that are limiting. And actually, therein lies another problem. You cannot print ProPhotoRGB, but at the same time even ProPhoto doesn't hold the gamut of the yellow in a standard SheetfedCoatedCMYK. Hell, we can't even see some of the possible colors in some of the CIE profiles. They are outside of our visual gammut. Don't even get me started on imaginary and impossible colors

[–]subarusti43 12 points13 points ago

I work for a printing company, the Heidelberg is a great machine! We have a 7 color Komori. Here is a little vid I made awhile back. Kind of a printing/bindery background. It's a poor edit..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PkNiQVeIik&feature=plcp

[–]WilWheatonsAbs 1 point2 points ago

This made me feel like the machines were singing the song. From there it wasn't hard to imagine them with googly eyes. I think it might be bedtime. Whelp, back to reddit.

[–]redditor0621 4 points5 points ago

I've been watching a lot of Breaking Bad lately and I thought you said Heisenberg. Maybe I should be watching less than 3 episodes a day.

[–]CrayolaS7 5 points6 points ago

You just need some meth and then you could watch it in one sitting.

[–]seafood10 3 points4 points ago

The song makes me want to sell my gold

[–]Sabin10 2 points3 points ago

You can work in ProPhotoRGB all you want but most of the time you will be dealing with digital printers who are configured with sRGB and GRACoL as their primary colour profiles.

[–]will_upvote_anything 5 points6 points ago

Incorrect. CMYK is a four dimensions colorspace. This book represents a 3D colorspace, i.e. RGB (or a approximation of it printed with CYMK ink).

[–]WhiteHorsesFlow 0 points1 point ago

Yeh. Literally impossible to print rgb.

[–]ihahp 6 points7 points ago

Why do people keep saying this? While virtually all printers are CMYK, primary colors are largely arbitrary. As the site mentions, they'd done photo development with orange, green, and violet before.

CMYK is used because it has a wider gamut, but RGB could be used in a custom offset print job. Possibly even RGB + Black, or RGB + white on black paper (although then you're printing with paint-like materials rather than ink-like)

[–]SgtFirestarter 5 points6 points ago

When you print something RGB, because you are using ink, it's technically converting it to CMYK. RGB is a color model made from light, which is why the colors won't be like you see on your screen when you print images off a computer.

Also mixing colors is completely different. If you mix the primary colors, you get white in RGB, but you get black by mixing cyan, magenta and yellow because the process of color mixing works completely differently in both. Finally, the RGB color palette is very limited so some colors are completely impossible to make (like indigo and ultramarine).

[–]ihahp 2 points3 points ago

You're not following what I'm saying.

You can actually use red green and blue inks to print an image. When inks overlap they get darker; you don't get white. You could screen print it or offset print it. Similar to the RYB color model (see here) but you'd replace yellow with green.

You just won't have nearly as wide a gamut as CMYK; you probably wouldn't get any yellows. But it's not impossible at all.

[–]pozap 4 points5 points ago

That's like saying literally impossible to see CMYK, because your eye sees light, and CMYK pigments do nothing but remove light.

You can print red, green, and blue with C M Y K inks.

You can also print them with R B G inks.

CMY just has a far better gamut for printing (ie, it's not ass-backwards). You can print purple with R G B inks, but not yellow.

[–]DrJorneyBrongus 2 points3 points ago

Yes, my graphic design degree is finally contributing something!

[–]deefees 6 points7 points ago

Of course it is printed with CMYK, but the book represents the RGB model.

[–]mircius 9 points10 points ago

That's what we do buddy, correct people when they mean cmyk.

[–]bluepepper 7 points8 points ago

But they don't mean CMYK. It's obviously not printed in RGB but it represents RGB, with each dimension of the cubic book representing one color component.

[–]abandonfish 246 points247 points ago

The people demand a gif of the pages flipping. For Science.

[–]codereign 241 points242 points ago

So you want a GIF of a 24 million colour book to be animated in a 256 colour format?

[–]chingchongpanda 164 points165 points ago

Yes.

[–]tonycomputerguy 49 points50 points ago

We demand it.

Nuclear explosion

[–]lucasvb 29 points30 points ago

http://www.cydeweys.com/blog/2008/03/26/gifs-not-256-colors/

In other words, GIF can store 256 colors per block (a sub image, usually treated as a frame). With the proper dispose method set, and a proper renderer, you could have 256 lines each with 256 colors being rendered instantly (delay zero) and have the last line with a delay. This would make a 65536 colors per frame animated GIF.

[–]Andygoesrawr 1 point2 points ago

there are only 16,777,216 RGB colours, and much fewer CMYK

[–]8-orange 3 points4 points ago

GIF isn't a 256 colour format.

[–]overused-meme-alert 13 points14 points ago

[–]stakkar 216 points217 points ago

At $40/ea for HP printer cartridges, this book cost approximately $5.29M to create.

[–]weaver2109 48 points49 points ago

Check out ink prices without the cartridges. It's pennies on the dollar compared to cartridges alone.

[–]aroymart 56 points57 points ago

so we just need machines to pour ink into cartridges?!

Genius.

edit: okay so apparently this is actually real. TIL.

[–]iritegood 45 points46 points ago

Just in case you weren't sarcastic (and to inform other Redditors): Continuous ink systems.

[–]Cynical_Lurker 9 points10 points ago

403 forbidden for me.

What is it?

[–]iamnoss 30 points31 points ago

Blocked by HP to stop you buying cheap ink.

[–]weaver2109 6 points7 points ago

All you need is a syringe to squirt the ink. You can get kits on ebay that include everything you need for 5-6 refills for about $20.

(I don't bother with capitalizing nazi/Nazi because it's not like WWII Nazis. I'm never sure.)

[–]Shadingun4life[S] 12 points13 points ago

I can't win.

[–]Mozzy 1 point2 points ago

Sorry. I try to avoid doing that because the whole correcting people's grammar thing is usually annoying and silly. The only thing I correct on a regular basis is apostrophes for years.

Example:

1990 = '90
1990s = '90s
1990 =/= 90'
1990s =/= 90's

[–]ADHthaGreat 186 points187 points ago

[–]alcaponeben 30 points31 points ago

This is probably the most expensive book in the world. So much ink..

[–]pU8O5E439Mruz47w 6 points7 points ago

I find myself wondering if the paper was simply dyed.

[–]chingyduster 3 points4 points ago

That'd take longer than simply printing it.

[–]pU8O5E439Mruz47w 0 points1 point ago

Absolutely, but my past experiences suggest the color quality and the finish of the pages would be drastically improved.

Also notice the edges of the paper are not white, which is generally to be expected when the page is printed.

[–]shat_my_plants 57 points58 points ago

god, thank you.

I was about to throw something.

[–]cuddlep00p 97 points98 points ago

[–]Sickly404 12 points13 points ago

How come?

[–]PoochDoobie 78 points79 points ago

Cause he's a redditor, and he is out of his fucking mind.

[–]Wavestrike 6 points7 points ago

[–]Relvnt_to_Yr_Intrsts 2 points3 points ago

You should be more trusting, man

[–]RedExorcist 2 points3 points ago

I don't usually smoke dogs that trust weed, but that guy seem fishy to me.

[–]shat_my_plants 9 points10 points ago

The original post was taking a very long time to load.

And I am out of my fucking mind.

[–]The_Doctor_00 3 points4 points ago

Hrm, maybe everyone was clicking on it when you were and this was taxing the OP original link, because it loaded as fast as the imgur mirror for me.

[–]smartalco 1 point2 points ago

Thank you.

[–]RemyTaveras 0 points1 point ago

You, sir, are a lifesaver.

[–]pimpsterbim1 36 points37 points ago

Being color blind, I feel like this book could be much smaller.

[–]pikachu_chu 15 points16 points ago

It's beautiful.

[–]lucasvb 12 points13 points ago

Inks are a subtractive color space, so it should be a CMYK pen.

[–]Mugros 4 points5 points ago

Interesting, but won't work well.

[–]mollywop 15 points16 points ago

Psh I have MS paint for that

[–]TheHolyCob 25 points26 points ago

I think you are the best mspainter in the world.

[–]darkangelxX447 3 points4 points ago

don't you mean Hussie?

[–]Saihna 1 point2 points ago

Psst, he didn't make that.

[–]skilas 11 points12 points ago

It's about time we replace those annoying colour swatches at the paint store.

[–]notrimskiy 7 points8 points ago

A colleague of mine who recently got his doctorate spent some time working on that problem. One issue is that conventional color swatches are commonly organized to make color mixing easy.

And then there are all those other issues where a digital version would be a 3D color space displayed on 2D screen (that needs to be accurately calibrated) and this may be challenging to navigate for a non-expert user.

[–]ACrowLeft06 7 points8 points ago

a digital offset print on paper with airbrushed cloth cover and book edges create a colorful reference volume of all the colors in existence.

Wow.

[–]jukbob12 7 points8 points ago

The first think I could think of was "Oh my! Think of all the ink they used! And how long it would take to dry!"

[–]tinkatiza 5 points6 points ago

6 printers later.

[–]Sagerian 5 points6 points ago

Where does "scale" come in to it?

[–]moonbuggy2012 3 points4 points ago

Duh, it means the colours are presented actual size. Want to know exactly what size blue is? You look it up in this book. Most publishers present colours smaller than they actually are for reasons of practicality and cost. This book is obviously aimed at artists and scientists.

[–]FluffyToasty 8 points9 points ago

There would be %60 less posts if it wasn't for Vsauce.

[–]gupsy 4 points5 points ago

I want to swim in that book.

[–]thatoneguy865 4 points5 points ago

how much? This would be delightful to flip through while "eating a sandwich"

[–]blolfighter 3 points4 points ago

This is of no use to me. Why do I desire it so much?

[–]Dysgalty 7 points8 points ago

That probably cost more than a car knowing the price of ink.

[–]Myrz 3 points4 points ago

What is it?

[–]SexualArtillery 4 points5 points ago

[–]lolcatandy 3 points4 points ago

I want to smell it.

[–]oohbabay 2 points3 points ago

Why is he/she wearing gloves?

[–]JustCallMeBen 2 points3 points ago

Since it's printed, it's actually a CMYK book...

[–]Xvash2 2 points3 points ago

What a lame book, who would buy one that's just full of grey pages?

[–]BrittanySchall 3 points4 points ago

Holy crap and a half! This is my website! I post stuff to my blog that I find inspiring. Never thought it would show up here.

I do photo realistic drawings, mostly of hair.

[–]jtjrr56 2 points3 points ago

[–]ivanmarsh 2 points3 points ago

Uh... no. Being analog a full scale RGB book would by definition be infinite. Zeno's paradox or some other chaos shit.

[–]joeyisapest 3 points4 points ago

Technically, you are right (and that's the best kind of right)

but.. things can be "rounded" for all intents and purposes...

An infinite number of mathematicians walk into a bar. The first orders
a beer. The second orders half a beer. The third orders a quarter of
a beer. Before the next one can order,
the bartender says, “You’re all assholes,” and pours two beers.

[–]notrimskiy 4 points5 points ago

Not necessarily. There are limits to human color discrimination ability.

[–]CptOblivion 4 points5 points ago

While that is true it was not defined as "RGB colorspace in increments recognizable by humans."
