As an intro to real analysis veteran, I can tell you that with that book it's not far off from the truth.

[–]ProveItInRn 19 points20 points ago

Agreed. Just got through that nightmare last year and I highly suggest OP should go pick up ANY other analysis book than Wade as a backup. And do yourself a favor and grab a copy of Counterexamples in Analysis, it will save you hours of wasted effort in those "prove or disprove" questions Analysis teachers love to put on homework.

[–]tigerrr925[S] 7 points8 points ago

Thanks for the tips. I already have a study group (2 classes in) and we have like, three other books to reference. It will be an interesting semester for sure.

[–]lightermann 0 points1 point ago

There's a list of errors in this book online. It's quite long and worth looking at. If you ever feel like something's wrong...it probably is cause his is a terrible book.

[–]senior_migz 1 point2 points ago

I once bought a text for a vector analysis course. Receipt read "Vector Anal".

[–]sayongja 1 point2 points ago

I recommend in particular Pugh's Real Mathematical Analysis. We used it through our year-long analysis class. Wade is a good supplement if you want to get any practice at all doing actual computations, though (not a single example or exercise, with actual numbers, of multiple integrals in the whole of that book).

[–]freecandy_van 2 points3 points ago

Agreed. Only math class I did not get an A in. One whole semester just to prove the basis for calculus. We weren't even given a book (Putnam method I believe?). We were given a 4 page set of theorems/corollaries and took turns proving them all in class. They all built on each other.

[–]1-800-redditorb 1 point2 points ago

It's called the Moore method. And yes, I agree real analysis is hard.

[–]freecandy_van 1 point2 points ago

Moore method that's right! Thanks!

[–]neogetz 0 points1 point ago

oh god the memories. I totally suck at analysis. I just cant seem to remember all the axioms.

[–]beenman500 0 points1 point ago

there are only 5...

edit: I think

[–]neogetz 0 points1 point ago

I know there aren't many but my course made you refer to them just by number and i could never remember the order, they didn't let you just write them at the top and refer to them by the numbers you gave them. That and i'd mess things up being dyslexic and rearranging all the letters.

[–]chickendodo 2 points3 points ago

Real analysis is the reason I stopped studying math. Fuck. That.

[–]rocketman4 34 points35 points ago

Pearson - "Hey girl, you down?"

Girl - "I don't know. I've never tried it."

Pearson - "Don't worry, I wrote the book on it."

EDIT: And yes, I know Pearson is the publisher, not the writer.

[–]is_sleeping 15 points16 points ago

Fuck you, Pearson, and your $200 lightly revised textbooks.

Edit: And yes, I know you aren't Pearson, the publisher, but let's just pretend for my own gratisfaction.

[–]Overeacting 4 points5 points ago

abebooks.com

International versions of 98% of books are identical. I'm sure they'll figure out to change all the example problems between the two versions eventually, but until then, enjoy $15 text books.

[–]is_sleeping 1 point2 points ago

If everyone ordered on abebooks.com, there would be no used books available for abebooks.com. I know, I know, you can rent books too, but let's pretend you can't just so that I can justify dedicating another big fuck you to Pearson for robbing naïve, poor students.

[–]canpakes 1 point2 points ago

"Piercin'"

[–]aceoftrachs 174 points175 points ago

I hear that course is a real pain in the ass.

[–]tigerrr925[S] 113 points114 points ago

I bet the final will be really hard.

[–]Bogey_Kingston 89 points90 points ago

If it's an early class, you might find it difficult to come on time.

[–]needleman16 78 points79 points ago

I was going to take that course, butt fuck it

[–]PackmanR 58 points59 points ago

I hear there's still a small slot open for latecomers.

[–]DoWhile 11 points12 points ago

OPEN BALLS

[–]demoneque 36 points37 points ago

The class isn't so bad if the professor just eases you in to it.

[–]SchpartyOn 26 points27 points ago

The homework is quite the load.

[–]fizzax 20 points21 points ago

The professor goes pretty deep into asymptotes.

[–]Mjolnirium 8 points9 points ago

You may have to bend over backwards to get all the work done

[–]mongster2 11 points12 points ago

Actual math reference. Upvote.

[–]lolcatrt 6 points7 points ago

But it was a bit derivative.

[–]buster2Xk 4 points5 points ago

He did sorta go off on a tangent.

[–]TheLionFromZion 3 points4 points ago

Honestly its rather relative.

[–]Billz2me 5 points6 points ago

[–]GoodguyGerg 11 points12 points ago

Don't worry once you get used to it you'll fit right in

[–]lethargicwalrus 14 points15 points ago

I hear the midterms are a real buttsex. AmIdoingitright?

[–]QuiteUnoriginal 7 points8 points ago

No.

[–]coffeetablesex 10 points11 points ago

Shhhh.

[–]MasterAardwolf 1 point2 points ago

Just let it happen.

[–]CreepyPunGuy 13 points14 points ago

Just don't get cheeky with the professor

[–]meow_university 5 points6 points ago

I didn't like that class, BUTT who knows maybe you will.

[–]Scunner132 9 points10 points ago

I knew someone that took that class and it totally rectum.

[–]zephyrnovae 4 points5 points ago

I took that course last semester! It was a pretty crappy course...especially in the end

[–]GeorgeCauldron 35 points36 points ago

Intro to anal: just the tip.

[–]pelmen74 4 points5 points ago

I have a course in college titled Analytical Methods. Try to shorten that and you get .... gay Walter White.

[–]ANAL_QUEEN 2 points3 points ago

Ana me?

[–]pelmen74 2 points3 points ago

Anal. Meth.

[–]pelmen74 4 points5 points ago

Did I just get trolled?

[–]ANAL_QUEEN 9 points10 points ago

[–]derefnull 2 points3 points ago

I'm in a class called Introduction to Numerical Analysis. How do you shorten it? NumAnal.

[–]neogetz 5 points6 points ago

at least it doesnt hurt

[–]bradkraut 3 points4 points ago

Try Analysis and Functions. Anal Func

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

I refer to all of my Anal classes that way. Num Anal, Real Anal, Complex Anal, Algo Anal. It's ALL good!

[–]AnalSexIsGoodForYou 2 points3 points ago

youll learn that its good for you

[–]Apostolate 3 points4 points ago

I'm pretty sure if you pass the class, it will be easy on your ass.

[–]Jeroknite 1 point2 points ago

Easy in, more like.

[–]Vhorbis 1 point2 points ago

I was told by a friend that this book teaches you the only way that 1+1=0.

[–]buster2Xk 3 points4 points ago

let a = b

2a = a+b

2a2 = (a+b)2

ei * π+1 = 0

Um... I think I did it wrong. But there is an equation that "proves" any number equals any other number. It relies on a fallacy though in that a will equal b and you divide by a-b, which will be zero so it's not doable.

[–]alextk 1 point2 points ago

Don't miss the introduction.

[–]ne_ziggy 1 point2 points ago

[–]9-Cock-Fox 25 points26 points ago

Just pray that there won't be a oral exam.

[–]Jackstick 3 points4 points ago

Never go ass-to-mouth.

[–]9-Cock-Fox 0 points1 point ago

That's some serious humam centipede thoughts you have there.

[–]iLuVtiffany[!] -4 points-3 points ago

You have to try it at least once. #YOLO.

[–]Jedditor 11 points12 points ago

To be fair that is the toughest part of anal. The introduction.

[–]Ulvkrig 10 points11 points ago

There's an epsilon-delta joke in here somewhere, there has to be...

[–]randyrectem 7 points8 points ago

yea must be one in the neighborhood...

[–]iamiamwhoami 7 points8 points ago

For all epsilon greater than zero there exists a delta greater than zero such that my penis is in your rectal cavity.

[–]gazpachian 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, that's good enough.

[–]not-alex 9 points10 points ago

You don't just jump into anal.

[–]Daveezie 2 points3 points ago

I came here to say this. I have to admit, I'm a little butthurt.

[–]niriz 6 points7 points ago

You think that's bad, my school has an "Anal lab" sign in the chemistry building (Analytical chemistry)

[–]gregdyer 5 points6 points ago

bsw. Butt sex wednesday

[–]Divided_Pi 5 points6 points ago

I'm right there with you, shall be a tough semester indeed. good luck

[–]theartfulcodger 3 points4 points ago

...If Mary already has five inches, and John gives her two inches more, how many....

[–]TheSkiFreeYeti 2 points3 points ago

With the price of anything Pearson, you'd better get used to it.

[–]coffeetablesex 3 points4 points ago

If I was the guy putting stickers on these books I'd do this to every last one of them...

[–]Meotwister 0 points1 point ago

You can't just jump into anal.

[–]HSFlik 1 point2 points ago

I, too, have taken a class in Real Analysis. Do NOT be afraid to waste paper and kill trees. That's what majoring in Mathematics taught me, anyway...

[–]Talbotus -1 points0 points ago

Well you can't just jump right into it.

[–]st3dav 0 points1 point ago

Need a tutor?

[–]YE55UH 1 point2 points ago

well, it's like glue sticks; you can't just jump into it.

[–]klukie 0 points1 point ago

well...you need to learn washing hands, sharings and climbing first.

[–]iShavedMyFaceForThis 1 point2 points ago

Count your blessings. My anal course is using some fancy-schmancy textbook that starts out with a bunch of infinite series.

Haven't even introduced the concept of a field, or the the reals, etc. Nope. Just jump straight to logarithms and fucking Isaac Newton.

OP, let's swap analysis courses.

[–]derefnull 1 point2 points ago

Haven't even introduced the concept of ... or the the reals

If you go into an analysis course without understanding what the reals are, you're going to have a bad time.

[–]tigerrr925[S] 0 points1 point ago

Actually I took modern algebra last semester, so I have a general understanding of fields and the reals, but I'm still terrified for this course. Especially since my teacher has been out of the country for 2 years, and has been a total space-case all week. I'll gladly swap analysis courses with you!

[–]iShavedMyFaceForThis 1 point2 points ago

We should do our own analysis course, out of Rudin. The right way.

[–]sidoh 0 points1 point ago

Don't be. Analysis is actually quite a lot of fun. :)

[–]JabberJauw -1 points0 points ago

There are no oral exams in the class, never go ass to mouth.

[–]ANAL_QUEEN 1 point2 points ago

PM me, I'll teach how to do it to someone properly.

[–]w-o-r-k-l-o-g-i-n 0 points1 point ago

where the hell do i sign up

[–]miaomiao 1 point2 points ago

You do pure math by any chance? Still remember the class when I was an undergrad. (Pleasant and painful, just like anal. )

[–]tigerrr925[S] 2 points3 points ago

Kind of? I'm a math major with a focus in advanced study, so half my classes are theory, half are applied. This is one of the theory classes, I think. I actually don't know that much about anything yet, I should probably get on that...

[–]miaomiao 1 point2 points ago

Nice. I did my math major entirely on theory, that was a mistake. Only thing that saved my ass were the physics classes I took, so now I´m doing PhD in photonics and life is good.

tl;dr: If math doesn´t work out, do physics. Also, don´t compete with the Russians.

[–]ButterMyBiscuit 0 points1 point ago

Hey I used that same book. :]

Aaah, I hated it then but I miss it now, this is making me want to do grad school.

[–]technikalgaming 1 point2 points ago

The sticker is covering the real title.

" An introduction to Analrapist "

[–]tigerrr925[S] 1 point2 points ago

Is Tobias Funke a guest speaker?!

alt + 0220 for Ü

[–]jotch 0 points1 point ago

I used to work in a college bookstore, any chance I got, I placed stickers like that.

[–]yawetag12 0 points1 point ago

I think any student buying a textbook for class is getting that Introduction.

[–]coopdaloop123 0 points1 point ago

You will probably do a lot of cramming for this class

[–]Ofeigr 0 points1 point ago

Soo..how do we go about proving For all "what what", such that all in the "Butt Butt" has a one to one correspondence?

[–]thebryanator 0 points1 point ago

If the frat boys don't rape you, the bookstore will.

[–]mylarrito -1 points0 points ago

5hrs in, and no one has done the "I can tutor you" line?

Damnit reddit, I am dissapoint!

[–]warped_and_bubbling 0 points1 point ago

Welp, you gotta start somewhere..

[–]warped_and_bubbling 0 points1 point ago

Welp, you gotta start somewhere..

[–]MaliciousMalus 0 points1 point ago

Hahahhaha, have fun.

That textbook sucks.

[–]0118-999-881-999-119 0 points1 point ago

Now that's a subject I could get behind.

[–]AnalSexIsGoodForYou 0 points1 point ago

It sounds like a statistics book but I don't think it is.

[–]Lobo2ffs 0 points1 point ago

I've got the book "Fundamentals of Anal", it's pretty good.

[–]neozen104 1 point2 points ago

Most important equation of that class is pi x r2 x L

[–]KMFDM781 0 points1 point ago

I got introduced to this when I saw the cost of all my course textbooks.

[–]TimesWasting 0 points1 point ago

Are you wearing pantyhose? I'm genuinely curious but it's hard to tell from the picture.

[–]radiantwave 0 points1 point ago

LOL! This reminds me of a story:

We had this online friend named Ana. Well, Ana and a few of us were all chatting when Ana made some slightly sexual and witty quip at one of the guys on the chat.

Another girl in on the conversation says, " LOL! I love Ana!"

after a brief pause one of the guys says, "Wait, did she just admit to loving Ana!?"

.. Needless to say the conversation went on and on and on...

From that point on any time Ana came online she was always Ana!

"Hello Ana!"

"We Miss Ana!"

Needless to say after about a week of this Ana never returned... and I will never be able to see the name Ana without the exclamation point it so righteously deserves!

[–]thekingofpeas 0 points1 point ago

Just wait till you get to start Complex Anal.

Sooooo much better.

[–]GoWithItGirl 0 points1 point ago

As a former college bookstore employee, I can tell you we put the stickers there on purpose.

[–]seasofcheese929 -1 points0 points ago

So THAT'S what happens as epsilon approaches zero...

[–]neosporin 0 points1 point ago

Feels good opening an international edition Pearson textbook to the "Not for sale in USA or Canada" disclaimer at a coffee shop in Canada's capital, about 5 blocks from where they prohibited it's sale in the first place :D It's the nerd equivalent to smoking weed on Parliament Hill.

It might just be me, but I prefer spending $50 as opposed to $500 for the same thing

[–]MDiddy 0 points1 point ago

Back in the days, I uploaded some analysis homework onto my webspace, calling the file "anal.zip". Guess which file caused a huge amount of traffic. I'd love to see the faces of people trying to masturbate to surface integrals.

[–]tehgreyghost 0 points1 point ago

Yeah it can be painful at first trying to just cram all night. Eventually though you get loosened up and the anxiety leaves you. You lay back and enjoy it, feeling pleasant and relaxed. Then the oral exam happens and you tense up. Then it hurts a new. Just keep trying and eventually you will enjoy the math...

[–]DustyName 0 points1 point ago

I'm gonna get fucked in the ass by that damn class

[–]johnlink 0 points1 point ago

[–]CoffeeFox 0 points1 point ago

Pearson has some of the worst textbooks I've ever used at a college level, and of course for the privilege of this they charge more than other publishers I am familiar with, too.

Pearson also hard-sells custom editions to colleges, to lock students into buying them from the campus bookstore which holds a monopoly on the edition custom printed for that campus. I even had to sit through a speech by a sales rep who went around our campus speaking during class sessions to convince us the point was to save us money instead of to deny us options and inflate prices. The smug smile on that awful person... ugh...

tl;dr- fuck Pearson, seriously.

[–]thebriton 0 points1 point ago

Relax. You can do it!

[–]somestrangewashers -1 points0 points ago

Pearson fucking sucks balls. I had an intro spanish book made by them that taught 100-2 million, but didn't think it necessary to teach 0-100. Like that made any sense. Everyone in my class failed the test and the professor wondered why...

[–]pilusante 0 points1 point ago

It's a very enjoyable class with thoroughly unpleasant exams and homeworks. Be ready.

[–]annefranklynotanazi 0 points1 point ago

It's a pain in the ass

[–]malenkylizards 0 points1 point ago

Is this a class on tensors? I hear that's kind of like getting it up the ass.

[–]Secret_Lies 0 points1 point ago

Anyone remember the math textbook publishers better known as "Misery and Suffering"?

[–]georgia10 0 points1 point ago

I don't want to loose my edge by correcting English in my head, but I often wonder if I will loose my skills or conform to the broken English I am so accustomed to. deep thoughts.

Real analysis? As in measure theory, etc? Been there...

[–]sidoh -1 points0 points ago

Analysis is fun. I've taken quite a few analysis corses... they're challenging, but in a more tedious way than algebra. If you breezed through algebra, analysis will probably be easy.
