The camera is steady, so the background doesn't move. You can just copy it in from earlier frames over the top of the balloon/water. Easier said than done, but not wizardry.

Most likely it expected the balloon to be solid and was intending to bite and not let go, so it locked its jaw once it decided it had bit down.

Yep, frame by frame. Using Adobe Fireworks, I copied the background on the first frame, pasted it in a layer over every subsequent frame, and then erased the parts where the snake was (and also some of the foreground leaves) on each frame. Took about half an hour.

Of course, to actual visual effects artists (which I am not), this method is probably less like magic and more like a caveman smacking rocks together. No real skill involved, just tools and patience. :)

Eh, removing the balloon is probably the most tedious part; I'm just hoping to save people the time it would take to do it themselves. Also, someone who doesn't know much about photoshop or flash could make something good without having the distracting balloon be a problem.

That said, I mainly did this on a whim. I didn't expect it to take off as well as it has.
