A classic fedora, with a shorter crown and a wider brim can be OK if you're pairing it with appropriate attire and it serves a practical purpose. A wool hat worn with a suit and overcoat, atop a pomaded part, on the way to a career fair or other professional-dress event, will look fine or at worst slightly contrived.
The real offense is in the trilby. I quite unliterally vomit every time I see one worn outside of the Kentucky Derby.

What's wrong with judging? The fedora is not worn for any reasonable purpose; it does not effectively keep the head warm, dry, or shielded from the sun. That means that it is solely an accessory chosen by an individual on the basis of his or her (mis)judgment that it looks cool or hip.
I'll mind my own business and keep to myself, but if I see someone wearing a fedora without a proper suit, peacoat, and pipe, it's fairly easy to size up his or her social skills and fashion sense.

I guess there is nothing wrong with judging, but keep it to yourself. It's just rude. For example, if you're overweight it's not my business to tell you you're overweight, unless I'm your doctor, in which case you should be worries because I am no doctor.

What if the overweight person, doesn't know if he's overweight? As a snorlax, I have no problem with people telling me I'm fat.
Here's the thing, if I was dressed like a douchebag the moment I walked out the door, I would like someone to tell me as soon as possible so I could fix that mistake. Just like how wearing fedora's anywhere with without the proper attire...makes you look like...well...you know.

Do note that wearing a fedora is much easier to fix than being fat. If people think you're wearing douchey stuff, it's literally as easy as taking it off and never wearing it again, preferably using it as a burnt offering to the fashion gods.
