Not quite true. It could be regular HTML and still not work on Internet Explorer.

[–]CR4ZY0WN3R -2 points-1 points ago

well played.

[–]rimian -1 points0 points ago

Not quite true. It could be anything and still not work on Internet Explorer.

[–]ozone_one 43 points44 points ago

I'm no raving fan of IE, but as of IE9 it is a perfectly adequate browser.

Yes, they were the bastards who brought IE6 and IE7 to the world, but that was a decade ago. There are many reasons to make fun of Microsoft, but I don't think that IE is one of them any more.

[–]ShadowSuicide 8 points9 points ago

You forgot about every version of IE prior to 6 as well, and the abortion that was the Microsoft Java VM.

[–]Thameus 2 points3 points ago

The JVM so powerful it gave us Oracle Java.

[–]ShadowSuicide 1 point2 points ago

How do you figure that?

[–]Thameus 1 point2 points ago

Microsoft introduced MSVM because they perceived Sun as a threat, and they sought to undermine that threat. Because of the resulting dispute, commercial confidence in Java was undermined. Then the security advantages were eliminated along with the sandbox. Sun should have been the ones buying Oracle instead of the other way around.

[–]ShadowSuicide 5 points6 points ago

Cool story bro. MSVM did not make a dent in Sun. Java has amazing commercial acceptance. Commodity server hardware, MS Server products, and linux killed Sun.

[–]Thameus 2 points3 points ago

What's amazing is that Java still achieved any commercial acceptance. This is a testament to what is good about Java.

[–]dnew 1 point2 points ago

Java's benefit in enterprise situations is you can keep chugging along and no matter how ungainly it gets, you can still keep it running.

IE9 it is a perfectly adequate browser

really? http://html5test.com/compare/browser/chrome21/ff14/ie09.html

[–]darkarchon11 2 points3 points ago

[–]amoeba108 0 points1 point ago

better, now if only we could wait 5 years for a majority of IE users to start using IE10...

[–]just_another_day 0 points1 point ago

IE 10 is not even available yet if you are running any thing other than Windows 8 or Server 2012 RC.

[–]ReefOctopus 3 points4 points ago

There is nothing about IE that is or ever will be adequate. Microsoft has a track record of deciding to interpret html, css, javascript, etc etc etc differently than ALL OTHER MAJOR BROWSERS.

IE has single-handedly transmogrified web development from a fun, creative process into frustrating tedium. Whatever you develop has to be compatible with it because it is the default windows browser and an astounding number of people still have old versions installed.

tl;dr: IE + The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation still leaves Bill Gates in the negative from a utilitarian standpoint.

[–]caseyjhol -1 points0 points ago

Although, it doesn't work with Windows XP. Somehow Firefox and Chrome (superior browsers) work just fine, but if you're on Windows XP, IE8 is as good as it gets.

[–]TalksToYourself 0 points1 point ago

they were the bastards who brought IE6 and IE7 to the world, but that was a decade ago.

Yet we continue to pay for it, a decade later.

[–]videogameexpert 0 points1 point ago

Except for the part where IE forces the entire home page to load before any of the buttons work. Including the X button if you don't mash it to death. If I have to use IE my home page is about:blank because sometimes I have to open it up for something other than reddit.

[–]02keilj 0 points1 point ago

Seriously? I currently am enjoying firefox portable much more than IE9

[–]PartyButton -2 points-1 points ago

no webgl, slow as fuck javascript engine, yep its sure great

[–]HurricaneAF 6 points7 points ago

Finding "<!DOCTYPE html>" in the code will simply tell you that it is HTML5.

[–]Mtc529 -1 points0 points ago

Yes, but that wouldn't be very funny, now would it?

[–]parmenidessphere 7 points8 points ago

Someone needs to get the word out about html5, they could canvas door to door.

[–]dormedas 2 points3 points ago

hah. Browser puns.

[–]Turnip_Blaster 2 points3 points ago

But what about all the other things that break IE that aren't HTML5?

[–]realmeat 18 points19 points ago

Hasn't been true in years.

You do realize comparing IE6 and 7 to Firefox 14, and modern Chrome isn't really fair right? Yes, IE6 sucks, and IE7 sucks, but a bit less- but when they came out, they were fine. IE9, pretty good.

[–]FuNkYtExtIngSkillzes 1 point2 points ago

IE6 received scathing reviews immediately upon being released. It always has been a sub-par browser, time has simply magnified its flaws.

[–]PartyButton -1 points0 points ago

ie9 doesnt support webgl, where do you people come from

[–]Moerphy 0 points1 point ago

That's just so irrelevant to this discussion, I don't even...

[–]PartyButton 0 points1 point ago

How is it not relevant. It's a way that IE sucks and the other browsers don't.

[–]beertastic -4 points-3 points ago

I agree, but there was a window there where ie was feeling really dated and not doing anything about it...until Firefox came along to shake things up. Now firefox is the joke imo, but it served its purpose.

[–]moons21 0 points1 point ago

I use firefox when chrome is being stupid. Firefox hasn't failed me yet.

[–]MickMorrison 4 points5 points ago

So fresh and witty.

[–]lemmysdaddy 3 points4 points ago

I use Google Chrome for most things, but only because of the plugins. There are features in IE9, however, that I really really really wish Google (or Firefox, or anyone) would implement. These include:

  • Full hotkey support while in full screen mode (Chrome has 0 support for hotkeys while in full screen).
  • The ability to say "delete everything upon exit (unless it's in my favorites)".

Why Google or anyone else is incapable of giving us those seemingly simple things is beyond me.

Edit: OK, the F11 key works in full screen in Chrome. To take you out of full screen. That's it, but it does prove that it's possible.

[–]Deaod 0 points1 point ago

I recommend you take another look at firefox. It supports at least the most common hotkeys (CTRL+T/W/N/...) while in fullscreen mode. It also allows you to delete certain types of temporary data when exiting firefox (Settings -> Privacy Tab).

[–]itpgsi2 0 points1 point ago

Chrome has 0 support for hotkeys while in full screen

What would give you that idea? Chrome never differentiated hotkeys between window and fulscreen. All useful stuff like Alt+arrows, Backspace, Ctrl+Tab etc. was always there. Maybe absence of address bar in fullscreen can be regarded as missing feature, but you can always press Win+R and type new address provided Chrome is default browser.

[–]x-cubed 0 points1 point ago

If you don't want data to be stored when using Chrome, create a new Incognito Window (Ctrl + Shift + N). Incognito windows don't store any history.

[–]matt01ss -2 points-1 points ago

Lol love reddit, you give logical reasons but the hipster hive mind can't handle non-popular things like IE. I feel the same way as you, I use IE and Chrome and like them both equally. They both crash equally, have pros and cons equally. Some sites work better in chrome, some better in IE.

[–]athousand 3 points4 points ago

Except Internet Explorer 9 supports HTML5 according to here, here, and here. The last URL is a link to bing.com which displays a new HTML5 video every day. Seems to work for me, let the downvotes commence!

[–]BTAA4TD 3 points4 points ago

That is complete bullshit.

[–]Lippuringo 1 point2 points ago

Why everyone hate IE? He doing perfect and holy job for all of us: downloading Opera, Chrome or Firefox.

[–]BlueThundah 0 points1 point ago

it's been a while since i've seen this one

[–]goddamnitgoose 0 points1 point ago

But this would make me have to use IE...

[–]_J_ 0 points1 point ago

Wow...what an old repost. IE now supports HTML5.

[–]CanIGetaHellYeah -1 points0 points ago

How to know if your lecturer is a douche.

Does he put slides like this up ?

He's a douche.

[–]oblongoblong -2 points-1 points ago

Sticking with IE nowadays is like insisting on riding an arthritic, three-legged donkey to work while everyone around you is trying to give you an awesome new car for free. It used to be a pretty decent donkey, but now it's old, smells bad and only goes in circles.

The one legitimate use of any version of IE is to download a proper browser.

[–]Groovypb -5 points-4 points ago

Repost

[–]jcracken 1 point2 points ago

That comment is a repost.

[–]obviousvirgin -3 points-2 points ago

Test it in IE? Well I guess the world may never know....

[–]SleepingOnMoonshine -5 points-4 points ago

You're telling me... To open internet explorer?
Yeah we're gonna need another route.
