Did Nicki Minaj actually back Romney?

[–]awdamnbasedgod 23 points24 points ago

She mentions voting for Mitt Romney on Lil Wayne's new "Dedication 4" mixtape that came out yesterday(?) over Kanye West's song "Mercy"

Edit: Not very important but it actually came out 2 days ago. My bad

[–]nixle 12 points13 points ago

TIL nicki Minaj is a she.

[–]Bronxand 0 points1 point ago

you made me laugh hella loud. thanks :]

[–]diphiminaids 1 point2 points ago

Any male who wouldn't fuck the hell out of her, is a homosexual.

[–]chemicalhat 0 points1 point ago

Maybe, it depends on which outfit she is wearing at the time. Pound the Alarm Nicki, no fucking way, Nicki like a year ago when I was impressed by her rapping, would probably bang.

[–]ninjames 28 points29 points ago

Nope. Gawker did some digging and found out she's not a registered voter (or even a US citizen). Either Minaj is strolling, or she's dumber than what we already know.

[–]bleepblorp 42 points43 points ago

She said she backed him in a song, she may not be eligible to vote but words still have meaning.

[–]fancy_sandwich 30 points31 points ago

lyrics:

"I'm a Republican, voting for Mitt Romney. You lazy bitches is fucking up the economy."

Here is the song.

[–]ClintFuckingEastwood 13 points14 points ago

My real question is whether that is an official endorsement. There's so much hubris in hip-hop music. To me, it appears as more of a statement like, "I have so much money that you should compare me to an old white man, fuck you for not having money".

Rick Ross was a corrections officer in a past life, now he puts on this act that he is a self made hustler. That isn't the case, but no one really cares. Hip hop music is much more about pageantry than fact.

Hell, Minaj could really want people to vote for Romney. She's pulled bigger stunts than a mere political endorsement with her hair alone..

[–]monom90 9 points10 points ago

It's the context of the song. She means it like this http://s3.amazonaws.com/rapgenius/tumblr_m9t85jDjJp1qhbh82.jpg

[–]penisvaginasex 0 points1 point ago

If only these pop "musicians" used half decent grammar, or at least conveyed their messages more clearly. The idiocy of that sentence is baffling, and it makes me cringe when I think about the people out there who actually enjoy this shit...

[–]monom90 1 point2 points ago

I'm not saying I enjoy her music, I'm just adding some clarification to what everyone in this thread is talking about. Pop music has never been about having good grammar or conveying a good message. It's all the same.

[–]ccrazool 1 point2 points ago

Hey now, songs (and other poetry) would be boring as heck if people conveyed their messages more clearly. Part of the art of language is playing tricks with context, phrasing and metaphor.

For instance, I was riding in a car with a new friend and Dr. Dre was on the radio. The point in the song where Dre says "I'll break your neck, damn near put your face in your lap" comes along and my friend says "Oh that's terrible! Why is rap so violent!?" I had to explain to her that "to break your neck" means "to nod your head enthusiastically to the beat of an enjoyable song" -- what Dre was saying is that he can write a song that you will absolutely love.

If Dre would have said "I write good songs" it would have sounded silly. Saying "I break yo neck" instead turns the act of conveying a message into an art form. Poetry, ya herrrd?

[–]penisvaginasex 0 points1 point ago

Oh for sure, I'm not debating against music having unclear messages; I love poetry in music. But her lack of adequate phrasing makes her message VERY unclear, and leaves interpretations which are completely opposite.

[–]stonemite 1 point2 points ago

Her popularity is as baffling to me as her lyrics.

[–]dehydratedpink 3 points4 points ago

Don't you have some invisible obama sitting in a chair you need to argue with?

[–]DangerousIdeas 1 point2 points ago

Do you really think Romney would have an official endorsement from Nicki Minaj?

If any reporter find that out (which is pretty easy), Romney's campaign would be screwed. His conservative, "home-town" values type of rhetoric would be marred if associated with the raunchy style of Nicki Minaj.

[–]tokerdytoke 1 point2 points ago

Actually as a correctional officer Rick Ross made connections with alot of dealers, he offered them deals.

[–]homeboy5925 1 point2 points ago

To me, it appears as more of a statement like, "I have so much money that you should compare me to an old white man, fuck you for not having money".

thats exactly what it is. people do not know what the fuck they are talking about. its hip-hop, its hyperbole. jesus.

[–]jaycrew 3 points4 points ago

Forget the political message, that was a terrible song.

[–]Dark1000 0 points1 point ago

being Republican = being rich. It's braggadocio.

[–]Don2k12 19 points20 points ago

words still have meaning.

... Yes.

[–]AATroop 8 points9 points ago

Can someone verify this? I feel like this may be bullshit.

[–]AREYOUSauRuS 4 points5 points ago

Verified

Words do have meanings.

[–]Blackmar -1 points0 points ago

Yup its sad to say but she is influencing some people....

[–]jacqueofalltrades 9 points10 points ago

You can not be able to vote and still be able to back someone. Fun fact.

[–]ermahgerdberbs 4 points5 points ago

She's not a US citizen?? Where the eff is she from?

[–]ohdoylerulez90 2 points3 points ago

Yes, yes she did.

[–]desquibnt 0 points1 point ago

she put some lyrics supporting him into some song

[–]iplaywithblocks 8 points9 points ago

Personally I like HOMIE, IT'S ONLY 15 MINS as a saying. I wish I had more reasons to say it.

[–]jrriojase 2 points3 points ago

"But I don't wanna ride my bike to school every day." "Homie, it's only 15 mins"

[–]SanitizedBrain 373 points374 points ago

Just because she comes from a different background/culture and uses Ebonic slang doesn't mean she doesn't hold a point. Nor does it mean she's not intelligent, or that you're any smarter than her.

The comments here made me realize how socially unaware, and pretentious some redditors are.

If a Chinese man found the meaning of life, wrote a book with some grammar/syntax errors, would it defer the content that it held?

[–]psyon 78 points79 points ago

If the woman was a conservative, reddit would be ridiculing her even more, and I doubt anyone would defender her.

[–]Beerpongg 6 points7 points ago

so true

[–]SkinnyLizard 8 points9 points ago

Super Trooper true.

[–]AATroop 1 point2 points ago

What meow?

[–]Fidodo 17 points18 points ago

It's like that one newscaster who completely changes voice when he's not 'live'. When you're not being professional you use all kinds of slang with your friends. It's just how you talk. That doesn't mean you don't understand language or grammar or can't use it when it's expected. It's just a sub culture, it's normal and pretty inherent in human culture.

[–]poo_smudge 14 points15 points ago

I thought she was absolutely right.

[–]pizzlewizzle 4 points5 points ago

What obligation does Nicki Minaj have to 'back up' the Democrats like this person claims?

[–]Cern_Stormrunner 2 points3 points ago

She has black skin. Therefore voting republican = "uncle tom"

[–]Argi_ 41 points42 points ago

Thank you for saying this. I thought she had a valid point. Also I know so many black friends of mine who talk completely normal in person, but as soon as they hit FB, BAM they type like this. It doesn't discredit anything she's saying, it's just how she was brought up.

You said it better than I did. Word.

[–]SkullyKitt 28 points29 points ago

Well-spoken (so my friends say) Asian female reporting in - I turn into a bro when texting/IMing.

YO BRO, YOU UP TO HANG TONIGHT OR YOU GETTIN YO DICK WET WITH THAT CHICK YOU WAS TELLIN ME ABOUT? WASSUPWIDAT?

edit:

(facepalm)

Okay, since my point seems to be lost on some people:

  • 1) I was not speaking for all Asians. Why in the world would anyone think this? We're not one homogenous lump of humanity. Big surprise, I know! I was providing an example of "someone who's language in a particular setting is incongruous with the mental image that others have of her."

  • 2) It's not how I normally speak. Reading comprehension - it's a wonderful thing! As I said, it's how I talk online or in texts. It gets me quick responses from people I know, makes my friends laugh, and it has actually saved my ass on more than one occasion - when I text/IM the way I normally speak, they know I'm either being very serious, or I'm in deep trouble and may need help. That, or someone has stolen my phone.

  • 3) The point was, some people are not who they come across as in text, and you shouldn't ignore content purely based on delivery. Justifying your own hangups by saying that someone's speech does not fit with what you consider 'correct' when it is considered correct for use in the context that they use it in - depending on the intended audience or situation - is not only ignorant, but voices a shameful amount of privilege and intolerance.

  • 4) If you have problems with the way people speak to their friends - something that does not affect you in the least - you may just be a judgmental douche yourself.

[–]narwhalcares 11 points12 points ago

As an Asian male, I don't even talk like that with my bros...

[–]awdamnbasedgod 2 points3 points ago

I do. It all depends on the environment you're surrounded by, I suppose.

Source: born and raised in Oakland.

[–]bprice57 4 points5 points ago

texting is more fun as a bro.

[–]Argi_ 5 points6 points ago

All caps is a must.

[–]SkullyKitt 4 points5 points ago

YO DIS SUMBITCH KNOWS WHASSUP

[–]TastesMightyGood -1 points0 points ago

Cruise control for cool!

[–]masterwolfe 1 point2 points ago

Huh, I am actually kind of curious about this. I have an Asian female coworker who by all accounts is incredibly articulate and insanely intelligent, but whenever she texts me she texts me like exactly like that, I have always wondered why. Not that I am generalizing all Asians or anything like that, but is it a common theme? My other Asian friends seem to do the exact same thing, but in all fairness they are pretty dumb and it is not surprising to see it come from them. I am just curious about the circumstances behind this.

[–]SkullyKitt 1 point2 points ago

As said, I do not speak for all other Asians - however, my reasons for doing so are such:

  • Many of my friends also speak/type/text/IM in this fashion. It is a social behavior. If no one I knew did this or reacted positively/receptively to it, I would not do it. Additionally, I don't do it with those who aren't receptive to it - ie, I would not text my dad that way, as he wouldn't understand it and would likely just be upset/confused.

  • I like making my friends laugh, and it's funny to them - whether or not they realize - because it grates against the cultural perception of intelligent Asian women being polite, soft-spoken, averse to crude language/behavior, sexually non-aggressive or submissive, etc. When I text/IM that way, it's basically a big F.U. to the stereotypes that have played a major role in my treatment by others reacting to me racially. I also do it because - for me - it's silly, and a small, fairly amusing exercise in 'translating' what I want to say through a different dialect.

  • I was completely serious when I said it has saved me in the past. I do have a few friends that I will actually talk 'bro' to over the phone, at least for the first few moments. I was once in a somewhat potentially dangerous situation at an event when one of them called. When I answered the phone 'normally' they knew something was immediately up, though I couldn't say anything at the time, and they came and got me.

[–]theawesomeone -2 points-1 points ago

I really wish Asian girls would stop talking like this...

[–]rachelspeaking 0 points1 point ago

Wanting to point out that saying that someone talks "completely normal" is pretty ignorant in itself.

[–]Argi_ 1 point2 points ago

Uses proper English and speaks clearly. Is that less "ignorant"?

[–]Cptnwalrus 95 points96 points ago

Exactly. Everyone's all like "Can you translate this into english hahaha", but this girl is actually pretty fucking smart. She knows what's up.

As the kids say these days...

[–]super6logan 65 points66 points ago

Really? Sounded to me like she just spat back a few Democratic talking points. Is that what it takes to be "pretty fucking smart"?

[–]firecrotch59 43 points44 points ago

On reddit- yes!

[–]farmerjones31 1 point2 points ago

She's smart because she believes what the Democrats told her, duh!

[–]Catsfosho 6 points7 points ago

No no no no, but she knows how to use caps lock. Obviously we're dealing with a fucking genius right here

[–]dabezian -2 points-1 points ago

Thank you. She regurgitated what the liberal media spreads. She is no more educated than country redneck bumpkin saying Obama is a communist.

[–]SparserLogic 0 points1 point ago

You have zero knowledge about this person's reasoning behind holding her opinions. She could have spent many hours researching these positions. Just because its a conclusion you disagree with doesn't mean its an uninformed one.

[–]tigernmas -1 points0 points ago

This is why you need to boost education and make it available to everyone. She's clearly an intelligent person with a better education she could do very well but I get the feeling that the system will fail her and she won't reach her true potential.

[–]Shroom_mole 2 points3 points ago

Ironic how people are commending her when they throw a shitfit if someone says your instead of you're.

[–]HSoup 4 points5 points ago

Dude...we're not going to buy that stupid book by the Chinese guy you keep pushing.

[–]CutiemarkCrusade 5 points6 points ago

Also, she's in school, so at least she's trying.

[–]Vromrig 2 points3 points ago

All I'm seeing here is "She's dumb as a door nail but she hates Romney, so how can she not really be an idiot savant at worst?"

[–]DeviouSherbert 2 points3 points ago

It took me awhile to even realize this was on r/funny. I thought this was a serious thing, and we were supposed to be agreeing with her. I didn't realize we were making fun...

[–]raging_asshole 2 points3 points ago

I was actually pretty pleased after reading the submission, and I figured most of the comments would be pleased too. Reddit still manages to surprise me now and again.

[–]knoxyouout 3 points4 points ago

I didn't realize this was posted to /r/funny at first. It doesn't belong here. It's a great message and I think this girl is awesome. I wish more people would use their brains and think about their future.

*EDIT: I checked out the comments on her page, and if you weed through some of the just plain hateful comments, there are some really thoughtful comments in the same vein as this. It's actually very refreshing.

[–]czhang706 8 points9 points ago

Would you say the same thing if some white guy in overalls said in a southern accent and poor punctuation about how he's not supporting Obama because he's anti-gun?

[–]bloodychill 7 points8 points ago

No, I'd say he was an idiot because Obama has made no action towards gun rights and even let the Assault Weapon Ban lapse without much comment.

[–]tidus89 2 points3 points ago

Of course not. If a white guy doesn't like Obama it is because he is racist, duh.

[–]Amandrai 0 points1 point ago

This is a fair point, but this is a different issue. (I'm not even American so feel free to disregard this...)

I agree with you that saying it's ridiculous to say it's racist to dismiss a black person for speaking in ebonics, while it's totally okay in any situation to assume a stereotypically poor white American is an idiot for the same reasons. But the girl in OP's post is speaking very specifically about Minaj's endorsement of a GOP presidential candidate representing a wing of the party which, it's fair to assume, will be detrimental to the long-term interests of the girl's community (young, black, lower class, [and increasingly disenfranchised as per GOP strategy]) which Minaj claims to represent. Saying this is the equivalent to gun control for poor whites is ridiculous, and especially since the GOP uses scare tactics (Palin's "death panels") or promotes xenophobia (various strategies to convince people Obama's a foreigner/Muslim) to convince poor whites to vote for the GOP, which may actually be detrimental to their own self-interest as well for the same reasons it is for the girl's. And probably if a stereotypically poor, ignorant farmer from Alabama tweeted Clint Eastwood something to this effect, Reddit would get him a medal.

[–]sandy_sandals 5 points6 points ago

Except if a Chinese man found out the meaning of life he wouldn't write it in caps lock. A lot of how people see you is how you present your point and information. Though her point may be valid, it's difficult to look past her presentation.

[–]bluntmasterflash 4 points5 points ago

Unless the meaning of life is caps lock. I bet Chinese caps lock is the shit. Is there a Chinese caps lock?

[–]AJER_AJER 1 point2 points ago

Is there? Someone needs to answer this.... please!

[–]sandy_sandals 0 points1 point ago

Maybe you just write the pictographs (or whatever they are called) huge? I dunno honestly.

[–]Jamer508 3 points4 points ago

SanitizedBrian. I Understand what you are saying and I hold your point valid. With one exception. This girls argument, or whatever this caps-lock gibberish is, is not just "some grammar/syntax errors", it is almost unreadable. I am not sure if she is going to school to be a teacher or if she is just upset with the "BOARD OF ED". I would never argue about any topic in the manner she has in pure English, much less Ebonics. Aside from slang, the lack punctuation causes this to be both hard to read and hard to follow. I also don't support what I believe she is arguing. I have never and will never take advantage of a handout ( state or federally funded assistance) because of two major reasons. I first of all do not qualify for assistance ( because I am in a middle class family that barely makes enough to not be eligible and barely enough to keep going) and second of all do not ever want to debt myself to my own government. I want to give back to my country and people without already owing them tax dollars.

[–]slumberlust -1 points0 points ago

It didn't bother you that she wants to be an educator?

[–]jagacontest 16 points17 points ago

Do you really think people that can speak street and proper english do not exist?

[–]dividezero 6 points7 points ago

For some schools, it's mandatory. You have to meet people where they are in order to help them.

[–]Amandrai 0 points1 point ago

Aren't people that sound like robots when they don't speak formal English so much worse?

[–]JurassicParkerr 0 points1 point ago

She's talking about politics and didn't bother to switch into "proper English" mode?

[–]Amandrai 0 points1 point ago

She's writing to NIKKI FUCKING MINAJ!

[–]NothingsShocking -1 points0 points ago

If he was born and schooled in the USA I'm going to say...yeaahhhh.

[–]erock0546 0 points1 point ago

The only thing that I was thrown off by was the caps. Hard to write. Other than that, I fully support this message.

[–]alexecutioner88 0 points1 point ago

Truth karma for u!

[–]Anterai 0 points1 point ago

Yes! Yes and yes.

[–]OneWarning13 0 points1 point ago

That was my thought as well, that girl knows what's up.

[–]selfprodigy 1 point2 points ago

Ya she's real smart. We should give the stage to more liberals like this, I personally would love to see her at the DNC.

[–]alias-of-a-girl -1 points0 points ago

The comments here made me realize how socially unaware, and pretentious some redditors are.

It doesn't mean that the other redditors don't have a point though: I had to read the comment several times before I fully understood how it was supposed to be read due to lack of punctuation. I read the entire thing, every time, as if she was yelling because of the caps lock. Don't get me wrong, I don't have any problem with the girl - she values education and is voicing her opinions in a (relatively) respectful manner, but at the end of the day, it's easy to discount an idea because it's difficult to understand the language immediately. Consider your comment about the Chinese man: his ideas wouldn't be any less valid, but they'll spike in popularity as soon as someone edits and publishes them in a book with proper english because most people won't even attempt to understand the original publication.

It's not really a matter of right and wrong, it's just the way it is. Pointing out that she's not going to be taken seriously due to the language she uses isn't pretentious, it's just simply true.

[–]cherubthrowaway 3 points4 points ago

Pointing out that she's not going to be taken seriously due to the language she uses isn't pretentious, it's just simply true.

If the audience is pedantic redditors, sure. If her audience is Nicki Minaj facebook fans, well then I think ur a fucking idiot. #realtalk

[–]castaneadentata 0 points1 point ago

I guess I hadn't refreshed in a while when I made my comment below, but if I had seen yours first, I wouldn't have even bothered. Well put my man.

[–]bprice57 1 point2 points ago

see what you fail to realize is that she is speaking to an audience, or more specifically, her audience. I cannot understand much in a Shakespeare play, but does it make the work less relevant? or the information less important? Just look at the way some people get blasted about poor sentence structure or grammar on Reddit, you can loose the meaning by nit picking the delivery. And i think that she was yelling.

[–]alias-of-a-girl 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I get that. She is writing for Nicki Minaj, which is a good point. But don't you think that the lack of punctuation could just as easily cause confusion among those same fans? I understand that the way she's typing is the way they all type, but that doesn't change the fact that there are ambiguous statements present and ambiguity isn't made any easier to fix by being a part of a particular audience.

Edit: you are right, though, she probably was yelling, so I guess the caps lock did its job :P

[–]castaneadentata 0 points1 point ago

I think you need to consider the audience she's writing for- Nicki Minaj and her fans. In all likelihood, a majority of Minaj's fanbase writes the exact same way as the OP. So that audience probably won't care how messages are punctuated or capitalized on facebook. In fact, they might appreciate her format as relatable. So just because YOU can't take her message seriously, doesn't mean others won't.

[–]alias-of-a-girl 0 points1 point ago

First things first, let me make something clear: I never said I didn't take her seriously. I do. I think her point is a good one and I think that, when the type of slang is accounted for, she was even very eloquent about it. What I'm saying is that a lack of grammar and punctuation creates ambiguity in the comment that can't be fixed by simply considering her audience. A second reading clears it up pretty quickly but that doesn't change the fact that many people are going not going to do that and will take away their first impression from the comment and may misunderstand the point due to the ambiguous punctuation. I guess I'm just saying that there's a reason grammar and punctuation exist, and that the english language causes enough miscommunication through ambiguity enough as it is without a large group of people deciding that it's 'cool' to discard grammar and make it even more ambiguous.

[–]castaneadentata 0 points1 point ago

All I can say is I understood her perfectly the first time I read it and I think those in her target audience will understand her just as easily. So I disagree with you when you say that it's easy to discount her or she won't be taken seriously because of her language. Because, again, it's about her audience.

[–]INQDPO 0 points1 point ago

fucking wretched reddit. so many assholes, simply because internally they have declared that they are not racist, feel totally comfortable making racist comments

same with the sexist bullshit on this website. "oh, I'm not a sexist guy, I'm liberal and open minded!" ... 2 minutes later girl posts a picture of herself "LOOK AT THIS SLUT"

with this picture, its more "look at this dumb woman." fuck you guys. so many fuckers give importance to grammar and spelling, but I highly doubt that they'd have the gall to yell at their favorite artist. I highly doubt that they'd be able to succinctly capture why the artist's behavior is bullshit either.

this site's behavior pisses me off - Im indian, I grew up near queensbridge in queens, nyc. I went to college in cambridge MA. then a few years after college, I got on reddit. I had never seen the racism that people talk about ... until I got to this goddamn site.

[–]pizzlewizzle 2 points3 points ago

nobody saying anything blatantly racist that I see except the posts you conjured up in your head

[–]Emmortal 0 points1 point ago

She is an Obama supporter, thus making fun of her makes us racist. Get with the times man.

[–]pizzlewizzle 1 point2 points ago

Sorry, I forgot. It's like when I was called racist because I talked positively about one of Herman Cain's policy views vs Obama's.

[–]irrelevancy 0 points1 point ago

You need to pay more attention to posts on reddit if you don't see racism or sexism on reddit.

[–]pizzlewizzle 0 points1 point ago

I see racism and sexism on reddit. In this thread, I don't see the copious and terrible racism that this guy is claiming is happening.

[–]irrelevancy 0 points1 point ago

Oops! Should have read closer. Carry on.

[–]justsomeguy5 1 point2 points ago

so you can't read between the lines at all and see the underlying messages in things people say? how do you even function day to day.. it's mind blowing.

[–]pizzlewizzle -1 points0 points ago

Sounds more like you're grasping for racism that isn't present.

[–]justsomeguy5 0 points1 point ago

keep living with your head in the sand.

[–]_Wolfos -3 points-2 points ago

The wording is stupid, the all-caps typing is stupid, but the point she makes is correct. A lot of people don't seem to get that Romney is all about making the rich richer and the poor poorer, she gets it and that's got to count for something.

[–]withered_tits -1 points0 points ago

Fuckin a

[–]Zorro_Darksauce -3 points-2 points ago

Her points may have been good, but communication skills count for a lot. All caps/lack of punctuation = poor communication skills

[–]deadleg22 6 points7 points ago

All caps is probably just her way of telling her peers, who can relate, that it's important. I'm pretty sure everyone of her FB friends know exactly what she is saying, other than possibly her parents.

[–]lurkerwife 105 points106 points ago

Despite a lot of things, I like the basis of the message.

Encourage more funding in education, and encourage women to become educated. I can get behind that.

[–]swiftekho 8 points9 points ago

And no longer listening to Nicki Minaj

[–]Amandrai 0 points1 point ago

Yes! All these people who are on her case about spelling and grammar-- it's Nikki Minaj! Who gives a shit? Most people on reddit wouldn't piss on her if she was on fire, but the minute someone tells her off with bad grammar, BOOM, they're on Minaj's side.

[–]allthatsalsa 15 points16 points ago

r/funny is not r/politics.

Edit: For the downvoters, look at the side bar to your right ->

Please No: •Politics - This includes the 2012 Presidential candidates or bills in congress.

You post politics in r/funny, you get political comments. The "this is funny" thing with this post is racist (LOOK AT BLACK PEOPLE ON FACEBOOK LOL) so it doesn't really belong in r/funny anyway.

[–]DracoX872 0 points1 point ago

But /r/atheism is /r/circlejerk for people from /r/politics. /r/funny is just /r/pics but with funny. /r/r/r/r/r/r/r/r/r/r/r/r/

[–]Matchu_Boy 51 points52 points ago

Duh! Nicky Minaj is rich now... Of course she's gonna back Romney.

[–]Thomas_Granger 28 points29 points ago

Damn, now Romney will get 0.000000001% of the black vote.

[–]oderint_dum_metuant 3 points4 points ago

The comments in here are so harsh. Heh, woe betide any Negro who wanders off the Democrat plantation.

[–]WildBorr 11 points12 points ago

I'm a little saddened that no one has given a good reason why anyone should really give a shit about what Nicki Minaj has to say about politics...

[–]debaterollie 1 point2 points ago

People who identify with her might vote for Romney based on her recommendation....she reaches a larger audience than probably 80% of "political gurus." I'm not saying this is how people should decide but it definitely happens.

[–]ohdoylerulez90 1 point2 points ago

Regardless of her credibility, celebrities do have some influence through what they support. The fact that Nicki Minaj does back Romney innately says that she wants the door of opportunity that was opened for her to close on everyone else. If she doesn't support you, why support her, is what this poster is getting at. I never supported Nicki Minaj for other reasons outside of politics or her music, but this poster has a point.

[–]WildBorr 0 points1 point ago

If I'm supporting someone that's a celebrity because of their music, or acting, or sports or whatever they're a celebrity for, it's for those reasons. People shouldn't care what a celebrity has to say about politics or religion (unless that's what they happen to be a celebrity for).

[–]justsomeguy5 1 point2 points ago

Despite what you think about Nicki Minaj as a music artist, millions of impressionable women look up to her. They listen to what she has to say. That's why she's a celebrity. That's the core of being a celebrity, in a nut shell. People listen when she speaks, and when she says things that goes against someone's core beliefs, this is what you get. Anger, and lashing out. She can't tell Nicki Minaj this to her face, so the next best thing is through Twitter.

[–]HSoup 1 point2 points ago

Because influence is influence.

[–]gobrowns88 5 points6 points ago

What's #2?

[–]thiskeepshappening 5 points6 points ago

The "screaming i'm a bad bitch" part is a reference to a lyric from a recent hit song of Minaj's. The poster is pointing out that if she can use her music to disseminate that sort of message among hip-hop youth, why not a constructive one such as "open a book"?

[–]pwill49 2 points3 points ago

Damn liberals

[–]boxmuncher68 2 points3 points ago

Yeah Nicki! You owe her. She is ENTITLED!

[–]JoinRedditTheySaid 4 points5 points ago

This isn't funny, it's a legitimate complaint.

[–]maybethatthing 17 points18 points ago

All these people bitching about the way this is written, get the fuck over yourself. It's really not that hard to understand the message that she's conveying, yet you all go and be pretentious pricks because of it. OMG I KNOW GRAMMAR THEREFORE I'M SMART AND THIS GIRL SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO HAVE HER OPINION HERP.

[–]bprice57 2 points3 points ago

welcome to reddit. home to some of the most pretentious hipsters on the internet.

[–]justsomeguy5 2 points3 points ago

welcome to reddit. home to some of the most pretentious hipsters on the internet.

home to some of the most pretentious morons on the internet. FTFY

[–]Slausbang 0 points1 point ago

Her point was valid, but it will be dismissed because of the way she wrote it. Being taken seriously in writing requires that you take the writing seriously.

[–]maybethatthing 3 points4 points ago

Do you honestly think that she always writes that like? Or just when she's on facebook talking to nicki minaj and not expecting it to get plastered onto the frontpage of a website that millions of people frequent daily and be picked apart for the way it was said?

[–]CheekyMunky -1 points0 points ago

Sooo.... which is it? Is she ignorant (but that's okay, leave her alone) or is she capable of writing correctly (but makes an effort to appear ignorant, which is also okay for some reason)?

[–]dividezero -1 points0 points ago

Exactly. You have to adapt to your environment. It's Facebook not oxford.

I'm glad she's going to be a teacher. You have to talk with your students not at them or worse, down to them.

The best educators i know can switch their language at the drop of a hat and make and crowd feel included.

[–]JurassicParkerr 1 point2 points ago

I was reading that and my ears still bled from the screaming.

[–]MimeGod 0 points1 point ago

She accidentally made a good point about needing better education.

[–]Quasigriz_ -1 points0 points ago

His school IS underfunded. ಠ_ಠ

[–]m4tthew -1 points0 points ago

This is an all around well made point for why education needs to be focused on in America.

[–]wroth 0 points1 point ago

I read that in Jeff Gerstmann's voice.

[–]ctino089 0 points1 point ago

Yeeahh..she lost my support when she did that GOD AWFUL performance at the Grammy's last year...lets just let her fuck up her career, its a joke anyway.

[–]potsdog 0 points1 point ago

Maybe she's written it like that so miss minaj can read it, you know since she so gangsta!

[–]GHST57 -1 points0 points ago

That's funny because in Massachusetts the top 25% of their high school class gets a full 4 year paid scholarship.

[–]Tkpwns 0 points1 point ago

[–]tokerdytoke -1 points0 points ago

Her music sucks. I knew her before she was famous, she's a huge slut.

[–]ranmaster -1 points0 points ago

I... i can't believe I'm agreeing with someone who writes in all caps. I think, I think I'm going to have to rethink my life.

[–]dwray 1 point2 points ago

I'm curious as to whether or not the people defending her intelligence despite her use of language in the comments get up in arms the same way when they see a large portion of the country similarly ridicule people from the South.

What I see on a daily basis is that it's funny for Jon Stewart or any other comedian to make fun of a redneck, or any other regional accent for that matter because of the way they talk, but to do the same for a black person using ebonic English is racist and making an unfair assumption.

It's true that you can't judge a person's intelligence by the way they talk, but it's generally a good indicator on how well that person paid attention to proper spelling and sentence structure in school.

If you're going to judge a book by it's cover, you should offer the same fair judgement for each book you look at. You don't have to be a grammar Nazi, but at best, this possibly intelligent young lady lacks the reasoning to best convey her point in a public venue.

[–]timmy11029 1 point2 points ago

I hope it doesn't breed...

[–]djinnrummy 1 point2 points ago

As an English teacher, I wholeheartedly endorse this message.

[–]drakinor 1 point2 points ago

Apparently this girls school needs A LOT more funding.

[–]toesockman 1 point2 points ago

It's hard to believe people really talk and act like this. If you speak like this, please read this back to yourself 3 or 4 times. Do you not realize how uneducated and ridiculous you sound? I'm not talking about what was said here. I'm referring to how it was said. There are 2nd graders who speak more intelligently.

[–]Phineas1713 0 points1 point ago

I carried this over to Google Translate. Didn't work.

[–]vchip 3 points4 points ago

Vernacular aside, she has a very valid point.

[–]LetsMosherize -3 points-2 points ago

The reason she wrote it in "Ebonics" is probably because she is attempting to address Ms. Minaj on a personal level, as a peer. Notice she is trying to remind her of her roots which would most likely be more difficult to achieve if she didnt speak to her on some real levels in the way they were both raised

[–]elbruce 2 points3 points ago

True, she is trying to communicate with the author of such fine literary works as "You a Stupid Ho" and "Beez in da Trap."

[–]ohdoylerulez90 1 point2 points ago

Don't dissect it like some kind of Jeff Corwin Safari adventure. Its just facebook. Also, fuck you for saying this.

[–]cycophuk 0 points1 point ago

And yet, no difference is made.

[–]EmceePohLee -4 points-3 points ago

I like to imagine Romney reading about this and becoming consumed by giddiness.

[–]Pooters -5 points-4 points ago

Jesus Christ, has SRS been here? There's a shit ton of negatives going on here.

[–]jtmitl 2 points3 points ago

No, posting something just to ridicule the way it's written isn't funny.

[–]Pooters -1 points0 points ago

Ah, so SRS is here.

[–]MonkeyLuven -5 points-4 points ago

Maybe the most eloquent thing I've ever read in broken English.

[–]I_Key_Cars -2 points-1 points ago

r/funny is full of racist little kids? Go figure. LOL

[–]robbotsdead -1 points0 points ago

I find it hilarious when dopes post "personal messages" to celebrities on Facebook. It's sad they don't understand most of those pages (even "official" ones) are run by associates or fans and the celebrity will never see the message. All the while, the person posting the message will feel good about themselves and assure themselves the celebrity will see their comments and completely change their way of thinking.

[–]PuTongHua 0 points1 point ago

I'm confident Nicki Minaj will conclude this person's hatred just comes from jealously of her large amounts of money.
