In 2001 I was hit from behind by a box truck full of landscaping bricks while stopped in my new beetle. The truck hit me at about 35 mph. There was a suburban in front of me which was also stopped. I walked away with a bruised knee. The beetle is amazing!!!!

Moderns cars are designed to desintegrate on impact. You have to realize, change of acceleration kills. If you accelerate from say 5km/h to 40 or 50 km/h because someone rams you, the acceleration is huge (35km/h in a few nanoseconds), and thus, the change in acceleration is gigantic (almost infinite). Your bones, muscles and ligaments just aren't made to deal with this jerk.

However, if the car crumbles apart like this, it increases the impact time from, say, 5 nanoseconds to 20 nanoseconds. This reduces the acceleration by a factor of 4, and reduces the jerk immensly, increasing your chances of survival tremendously.

So, whenever you see a car totally spread all over the fucking road, be happy that modern car security did it's work. The driver is probably fine.
