In type. In conversation, you have no way of knowing how it's spelled, and just because everyone does it doesn't make it right. If the CTA calls it 'L', that is what it is called because they made it and it's theirs. The wikipedia page even notes that it is INCORRECTLY referred to as el as an abbreviation of elevated.

It's "L". Before the system was expanded, it just went around the Loop. Hence, the train stops were marked with big "L" signs.
