I'm neither republican nor democrat. I just found the anecdote funny. But I guess I just opened up a can of worms by pissing off every liberal asshole on reddit.

"Please no pictures of text - make a self post instead."

I thought it was chuckle-inducing. But yeah, politics in an improperly-done imgur posting was probably a bad idea.

Then the little girl asked, "If you know a homeless person is at the grocery store, and you have work that needs to be done, why haven't you hired the man and paid him a fair wage for his work? How cruel are you?"

After a brief pause, where I sputtered incoherently and my face turned beet red, the little girl smiled and said, "Welcome to the Republican Party indeed - the party that makes up smarmy little stories that leave out the fact that they have no interest in homeless people, beyond using them to try a prove a point about their heartless, ridiculous and dysfunctional philosophy."

you can have a heart as big as the moon, but it still takes MONEY to help people and that money doesn't appear out of thin air, it comes from people that WORK! And the reason she doesn't offer him work is because the homeless man isn't interested in work because eventually, someone will come and give him food or money because he exists. I've worked with homeless people enough to know that they do NOT care about getting out, they only care about their booze first, food second.

Quick, both of you, put more text in front of pictures! We need to continue this philosophical debate on Willy Wonka!

[–]cstinabeen 1 point2 points ago

So, all this argument proves is that this child has better hookups than the homeless guy at the store? Why? She probably dresses better and took a bath last night.

[–]murl56 -1 points0 points ago

What a simplistic and idiotic anecdote.

which is it?

Appeal to Probability: is probably the biggest. There is a huge assumption that the homeless has the same capability but doesn't want to work for the fifty dollars, and it is no one else's responsibility to give it to them.

The major fallacies come in creating a strawman argument, silencing the opposition (parents), using a bandwagon claim (the entire story is written in a 'we' perspective), making claim to common sense or etiquette without actually addressing whether or not that is true (assumptive selling of common sense), using something cute to add meaning (a child), using another assumptive strawman (the homeless man), appealing to money (people's inherent greed for their own money), oversimplifying major concepts, assuming since something is true for one example it's true for the whole of society...

it goes on but I think you get the picture. If you swap out the idea of helping the homeless with accepting a loan on a car then you just read a used car salesmen's friendly pitch.

This is a cool post. Thank you.

Thank you.

Precisely.

I don't understand the myth that Democrats are pushing for a complete welfare state. If people can work we want them to work. I know you didn't write this, but you reposted it so I will aim my questions at you.

Are you going to drive into the city to pick up the homeless man so he can mow your yard?

What about the homeless that are physically and mentally handicapped? How are you going to accommodate them when mowing your lawn?

What about their kids? What age is the cut off? What about the 75 year old woman with arthritis or the 68 year old man with Alzheimer's?

It's not about giving everyone a free ride, it's about giving them a hand up. As a liberal I believe that this country is limited by its weakest members. America was made great by a strong middle class, not the wealthy elite. Things like rights to medical care, unions, minimum wage and social security strengthen the middle class.

We want to educate people, both in life and in an academic sense. We want our workers to be skilled so that we can outsource the unskilled positions instead of the inverse. We want Americans to be hired as managers, technicians, engineers and other higher paying jobs instead of lesser paid workers on work visas from places in Asia. Yet until we start training the population that won't happen as often as it could.

And when those workers on work Visas come into the United States we want them to have a chance at citizenship. We were the most technologically advanced nation because we accepted people like Einstein, Tesla, and Bell. We accepted Runaway Jews and Cold War defectors.

Social programs are not limited to giving money to the lazy. It can help educate those whose only crime was being born poor. It can feed and clothe those who need a temporary reprieve. The single mother that has never seen a dime of child support, the 45 year old father of 3 whose company downsized and can only find menial labor that pays minimum wage or just above. The poor college kid that tested well enough to be placed in a decent state university but not well enough to have much of a scholarship if any.

But go ahead an keep posting snarky quips on here. That will show me, change my mind, and shame me into being a Republican, because everyone knows that if you can out debate a five year old you can out debate any liberal...

tl;dr

[–]alragusa 0 points1 point ago

Hey dummy - you are describing a utopian society.

IT DOESNT FUCKING EXIST.

This post was idiotic but the only way to prosperity is free markets, sound money, social equality and freedom. Centralization leads to corruption which eventually leads to people in gulags. Wake up.

[–]Bowser88 1 point2 points ago

It was clever and funny the first time. Sorry dude, repost.

[–]kimberwee79 1 point2 points ago

Definitely epitomizes Republican thinking . . . blame the victim. If this person can even find a $50 lawn mowing job, it isn't enough to feed him much less put a roof over his head; there are millions of working poor.

[–]naksidras 0 points1 point ago

Victim of what? Homelessness isn't a disease you just GET. It's a choice. I've worked with enough homeless people to know that.

[–]swegleitner 0 points1 point ago

Homeless is a choice, just like homosexuality. I'm surprised more people don't "choose" to be gay and "choose" to be homeless.

[–]THUGLIFEGANGSTER1998 0 points1 point ago

if you actually worked with the homeless, you'd know that ~40% of them have some sort of mental illness.

aka a disease they just GOT.

[–]naksidras 0 points1 point ago

I don't deny that some homeless people have a mental and/or physical condition that prevents them from being a productive member of society. I've seen some pretty f'd up stuff. And I'm not against helping that demographic. I'm not going to argue your exact percentage, but the majority of homeless have no disease at all. Their "disease" if you want to call it that, is the mindset of poverty. Poverty is just the way to live life and they don't care about getting out.

My dad forwards me this shit twice a year.

[–]bennyheem21 0 points1 point ago

this is the greatest thing I've ever seen.

[–]PirateKilt -1 points0 points ago

Pitchforks... get your pitchforks right here... only 4 karma points each, and for a 5th point I toss a torch in on the deal!

[–]ademu5 -4 points-3 points ago

I only have 3 karma, can reddit come up with the difference?

[–]Klangdon826 0 points1 point ago

Yes yes yes! From a one-percenter who pays 50% in tax and still gives many thousands in charity plus much personal time, and never asks for credit. I also support abortion rights, gay marriage, legal marijuana, and-oh I couldn't give a fuck what religion my president is. I would give a lot more in charitable donations if taxes were lower. I also just decided NOT to start a new business in NY because the laws are so oppressive to small bus owners. Wake up, Obama - lovers! You are being used.
