If you watch for long enough, he finds a boring 9-5 job, sits at a desk all day, and reminisces about his former tree-swinging self.

[–]MitchOssimPants 80 points81 points ago

If you watch for awhile longer he has a pig of a wife and two kids he hates.

[–]SupermanV2 107 points108 points ago

Apparently if you read Reddit for long enough you hate the world.

[–]SinisterKid 61 points62 points ago

Wow, this thread got dark real quick.

Couldn't you've picked a white lamp? Jesus Christ

[–]KyroDCK 27 points28 points ago

What? You got a problem just because it's a black lamp? What's so wrong with black lamps? "oh the black lamp can't light the room for a family" is what you're thinking right? Well screw you man and stop being so racist and judging the color of lamps. You could really learn a few things you know. I know for a fact this African American lamp has supported light for a family of six. six. That's probably more than what you can say you've done.

[–]wolfvision 26 points27 points ago

I'm too asleep for this shit

[–]KyroDCK 12 points13 points ago

Wake up and smell the bacon man, there are thousands of black lamps waiting to be brought into the warm safety of your home that so many privileged white lamps have. If you call 1-800-FOR-LAMP and make a small donation, you will give a young lamp some hope for just a couple cents a day.

If you watch long enough, he finds a horribly stressful food service job at a fast-food restaurant, and has to work days, nights, weekends and holidays. EDIT: on minimum wage.

[–]ipretendiamacat 1 point2 points ago

... are there actually 9-5 jobs? Most of the jobs I see necessitate 10+ hours a day and often require overtime.

[–]CountNoAccount 3 points4 points ago

"Although you will be required to work over forty hours a week, as a probationary employee during your first ninety days of employment you will not be eligible for overtime compensation." - my new emoter handbook.

[–]Modestkilla 0 points1 point ago

They are out there. I have one and I might work an hour OT once every 3 weeks.

[–]Jayson182 2 points3 points ago

As someone who was 'lucky' enough to easily land a good job back in the .com boom of 2000... I'm now in my 30's and wish more than anything that I didn't work for the man, had the time and energy to do something with my life. Another 30 years of this, even though I have it better than most, is both daunting and brutal.

tl;dr - Find something better to do with the trees.

[–]emocol -2 points-1 points ago

At least he gets to go on reddit.

Whoa. You actually get a response to your applications? Lucky.

[–]uberbob79 1 point2 points ago

One time I got a letter that said white heterosexual males need not apply.
I should have kept it cause the karma I could have reaped would have been mighty.

[–]listeningwind42 5 points6 points ago

I don't even get rejection emails usually... just silence.

[–]WorthASchruteBuck 0 points1 point ago

I don't even get that. My boyfriend has gotten "We just don't think you are the right fit for our culture". What a nice way of saying "fuck off-we dont think we would want to go to lunch with you".

[–]Dabakus -1 points0 points ago

Interesting...when did this episode air?

I wrote this for Maxim magazine years ago

http://www.maxim.com/sports/ask-maxim

"Can you dive into a pool of gold coins like Scrooge McDuck?"

And the answer I wrote is very, very similar to what Peter Griffin says in that clip...

[–]maccabeus 10 points11 points ago

It's almost as if you're not the only person to realize that diving into a pile of metal would be painful...

[–]Dabakus 0 points1 point ago

Almost!

[–]Schiesty -1 points0 points ago

Congratulations, you quoted something from someone that has thought something that hundreds of thousands or millions of people have thought of already. You are a special snowflake, clearly they are using radio waves to steal your thoughts.

[–]M8ker 0 points1 point ago

it sounds like someone asked him that question.

[–]Dabakus 0 points1 point ago

Clearly, you're mad.

Like I said, the phrasing is extremely similar to how I phrased it.

I will leave you to your bitter neckbearding now.

[–]theharb 3 points4 points ago

This is what it was like last time I started looking around in the job market. People literally throw money at you if you put the letters "HL7" on your resume.

[–]I_Am_Vladimir_Putin 2 points3 points ago

What does HL7 mean?

[–]Mozzy 5 points6 points ago

Half-Life 7 confirmed.

[–]boot20 1 point2 points ago

It is a "standard" for medical records. It is basically a catch all for I deal with medical IT.

Sadly, it is a meaningless term.

[–]naewpaks 0 points1 point ago

yea what does that mean?

[–]Journalisto 1 point2 points ago

Not if you get a job as a journalist. Trust me.

[–]Dheredia88 0 points1 point ago

Don't tell me this, I'm a journalism major and my professors say don't do it for the pay.

[–]wolfvision 1 point2 points ago

Twist: They're chocolate coins

[–]dyszka4u 5 points6 points ago

Even better!

[–]Jackomo 0 points1 point ago

But, unless the chocolate was melting, it would have the exact same effect.

[–]Franzo208 0 points1 point ago

At least until you have to pay bills/loans. I don't have a gif for it, but I'm sure there is a perfect one out there.

[–]Xokami 32 points33 points ago

Upvote for perfectly looping gif!

[–]empw 5 points6 points ago

[–]FisherKing22 3 points4 points ago

I've been trying to find where it breaks for about a minute now. No luck yet.

[–]leftabitcharlie 3 points4 points ago

I think it's just before he slams into the tree. He jerks slightly and the tree branches change.

[–]FisherKing22 2 points3 points ago

Good catch. I didn't notice the tree branches changing until you pointed it out.

[–]aepac 0 points1 point ago

Try harder! It took me almost 9 minutes!

[–]CrystalKU 8 points9 points ago

I just got back from signing an offer letter and filling out new hire paperwork, this made me smile that the search is over (for now)

[–]Pit_of_Death 3 points4 points ago

Congrats. I had this experience myself back in June. Then I was laid off two weeks ago. In other words, always be prepared.

[–]SupermanV2 73 points74 points ago

[–]ramsay_baggins 7 points8 points ago

I love that gif, but here jobby means shit, so it's kinda awkward.

[–]JelloLegs -5 points-4 points ago

There are plenty of farms and other manual labor jobs that pay comparable to entry level positions in many companies. It's just that we Americans refuse to work in such conditions for some reason. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/05/us/farmers-strain-to-hire-american-workers-in-place-of-migrant-labor.html

Maybe we feel entitled? Perhaps we believe that our education puts us above labor positions. I have no idea what everyone who has difficulty finding work is thinking, I just know what my parents passed down to me. And that's sometimes you have to just roll up your sleeves, go outside and mow some lawns. Figuratively speaking of course So when I couldn't find a job as a translator, I went to trade school and learned to fix small engines. When that shopped closed down and there was no where else to work, I busted my ass on a local farm for minimum wage. Hot long days sucked, but I was earning income and supporting myself.

Now I have a great job and a work ethic that has allowed me to rise quickly. Why? because I'm constantly having to tell people that work for me to get the fuck off reddit and get productive.

[–]Edgar_Allan_Rich 0 points1 point ago

I for one know that it's scary to even take on those types of jobs because it's very hard to work your way out of them. Not only are low-wage jobs financially cumbersome, it's also easy to get pigeon-holed by prospective employers after spending years in a crap industry.

"So, why are you looking to get out of shetland pony insemination and work a normal job?"

(...seriously? I'm being asked this?)

"We'll call you."

I get asked these types of questions at every damn interview. Why have I had so many jobs? Why do you think? Because I'm fucking poor and hard working. But please...pass me over for the rich entitled kid with no life experience. It's a great business move.

[–]JelloLegs 0 points1 point ago

I can definitely feel your pain. During my interview, a similar question was posed. I explained to him the situation behind me leaving those jobs and that they should call my previous employers and discuss my work in more detail. My current boss did so and told me that's the reason I was hired. Because every last one of my previous employers vouched that I was dedicated and motivated to better their business. I didn't just 'sit' in those jobs and 'show-up' to work.

I'm not rich now, by any means, but I have a very secure nice paying job now, that I definitely wouldn't have gotten if I didn't learn early in life to simply EARN my money and not feel entitled to the paycheck.

It's similar to some of the Japanese work ethos, that if you don't want to work hard, there's someone else who's more than willing to work harder than you waiting for your position to open up.

[–]NomadofExile 0 points1 point ago

I was wondering why you had negative points on this post that makes very good arguments...then I got to the last sentence and it became clear.

[–]jbs398 0 points1 point ago

tell people that work for me to get the fuck off reddit and get productive

Dunno what time zone you're in, but you're setting a great example by making posts right now.

That said, I agree that people should look for other options if they can't find something they're most qualified for, but it does suck to spend x number of years and have 30,000+ in debt and suddenly have to look for stuff that you're either overqualified for in education or require different training. Maybe some people do feel entitled, but it's pretty natural to feel frustration over not being able to get paid for doing something with an education that you're still on the hook for financially.

[–]Arkanicus 6 points7 points ago

Been working at a place for 5 months now as a junior engineer. Severely underpaid and overworked, no benefits, no holidays, and 9.5 hour days.

This gif hits right in the feels.

Don't worry fishbro...it will end eventually.

[–]leekayfabe 7 points8 points ago

I feel you. Working is so much easier than trying to find work. I hate job hunting.

[–]dorke 18 points19 points ago

So job hunting is similar to dating?

[–]heardlb 11 points12 points ago

It's the exact same

[–]I_make_things 12 points13 points ago

Except JOB pays YOU

[–]astarkey12 4 points5 points ago

Except for the lovely phenomenon of unpaid internships.

[–]Juffy 11 points12 points ago

[–]RainDownMyBlues 0 points1 point ago

And slams straight in to the ground.

[–]ghegeman 4 points5 points ago

I just want to say that this gif is pretty smooth. Also what is that rope attached to? why does the angle never change?

[–]timrbrady 10 points11 points ago

[–]Mapuchii 1 point2 points ago

[–]Platolove 4 points5 points ago

Job hunting blows. Yeah, there are jobs at fast food places and they are always hiring, but for people with advanced degrees a place like that isn't ideal.

[–]WorthASchruteBuck 3 points4 points ago

Jobs at fast food places are not available for people with degrees or any type of office experience. They know that you will leave as soon as you are offered full time standard office hours at pay that is in your range for education and experience. They don't want to spend time and money training someone who might leave in 2 weeks when they can get a drop out with no experience for minimum wage. I have applied at every fast food place and restaurant around. Not a single call.

[–]FlyingPasta 2 points3 points ago

Can't get jobs there either

[–]Thinks_Like_A_Man 4 points5 points ago

A couple of weeks ago, I interviewed for a dream job.

The pay was great, the benefits were decent (company health insurance coming on line, vision covered, stock) and they treated their employees very well. There were no salaried positions including the ownership, so if you worked 70 hours a week, you got paid time and half for anything over 40.

The qualifications they were seeking were nearly impossible to find together in the area where they were looking and they were astonished I had the skills and experience they wanted. I was a bit overqualified for the job, and probably older than the other applicants, but I brought to the table other skills they were going to be need in the next six months.

I went to the first round interviews, sent the perfunctory thank you letter and didn't hear anything after that. Even if they sent me a gang email telling me they hired someone else, or that I wasn't a good fit, that would have been preferable.

Not having closure makes you weary.

[–]lazrbeam 4 points5 points ago

agreed. i know that employers aren't as desperate as job seekers, but when you hold yourself to such a high degree of professionalism and courteous behavior, and you're reciprocated with really rude/unprofessional or just down right inconsiderate behavior, it really really gets me down.

[–]Thinks_Like_A_Man 0 points1 point ago

I'm not even upset about them being unprofessional as I am about not having the feedback to know why I wasn't selected. Did they think I was overqualified? Was it because they felt I would get bored in the position? Was there a better candidate? Did something happen and they decide to not fill the opening? Have they not decided yet?

[–]dafuqdidIwrite 0 points1 point ago

My suggestion is to write a mail to the relevant person and CC all tje top management you can find on the website stating factual data about when you went for interview and how you're still waiting for a revert. VERY PROFESSIONALLY WRITTEN AND VERY SINCERELY WRITTEN! Always does the trick...

After all even I have given time from my life to come for the interview... I have a right to know...

[–]Thinks_Like_A_Man 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, um, right. I interviewed with the company owners.

[–]bamforeo 3 points4 points ago

This is the most perfectly looped and relevant gif I have ever seen.

[–]Wreththe 3 points4 points ago

Looking for a job is the worst job I've ever had.

[–]PleaseDontStalkMe 3 points4 points ago

You're lucky you actually hit a tree, that at least indicates some sort of feedback. The cold dead silence is what gets me. I spend hours on an application and it's like I never did anything at all.

[–]GertBrobain 0 points1 point ago

Yikes, and awaaay!

[–]Damericus 0 points1 point ago

[–]Kyle-Overstreet 2 points3 points ago

Basically. I've reached a point where I just need to stop sending out resumes and tweaking cover letters because it's gotten too depressing. Sometimes you just need a break to process all the rejection.

I know that feel bro!

finally. a gif that accurately portrays my feel.
