I'm not joking. This may be my favorite photo on the internet.

[–]rotzooi 19 points20 points ago

Googling 'favorite photo on the internet' comes up with this image for me.

Not especially interesting, I know.

[–]CorgiTeaTime 6 points7 points ago

Great. Thanks to this post, I know have TWO favorite photos on the internet. I didn't have even one until just now.

[–]Arre 5 points6 points ago

[–]Just-my-2c 4 points5 points ago

that's only if you call ebaumsworld the internet...

[–]RabidOctopus 4 points5 points ago

First background I've had from this planet since Curiosity landed.

[–]Cybii 17 points18 points ago

The amount of Switzerland posts in EarthPorn make me feel proud for being Swiss.

[–]xhosSTylex 14 points15 points ago

That is stunning. The lights below the clouds look like fireflys.

[–]NoFeetSmell 9 points10 points ago

OP, you're a beautiful person/well-constructed tower for including the photographer's name in the post's title.

edit: Though if anyone wants this size image but without the severe jpg artefacts this one has, get it from this link instead. You can see the banding in the top right and elsewhere in the sky is way better. OPs is still nice, of course.

Also, you get to see the EXIF data with a non-imgur .jpg file. It was taken on January 30, 2011. Here's the rest of the information.

I want a D700 so bad :P I'm under no illusions about it magically making me a great photographer all-of-a-sudden, but it would open up sooo many opportunities my trusty D3000 can't take advantage of. Just high ISO performance and a full-frame sensor alone is gold, but once you include weather sealing then you can even shoot in the rain, when lights reflect everywhere! I'm saving my pennies, just another 189,000 of them to go...

[–]upturn 1 point2 points ago

I hear you on the full frame sensor point, but if you want to shoot out in harsher conditions, some plastic and tape will go a long way.

I got some great exposures on alpine tundra in the rain last week using a plastic shopping bag and some masking tape to protect my 60D.

[–]NoFeetSmell 1 point2 points ago

I got some lovely shots on a really foggy night last year, but I was out so long that moisture had started to condense on my lens, and I was worried about it getting into my lens as I zoomed in and out! I know a new body wouldn't help that, but at least I'd know that it was safe, ven if the lens suffered :P Congrats on your shots btw, and thanks for the tip! I'll try it some time. Love fixing stuff with duct tape :P

[–]upturn 2 points3 points ago

What I will typically do is keep a UV filter on the lens (I know this is heresy to some) and tape some plastic around the surface of the frame, which is in turn taped the camera body. Keep it loose so you can still comfortably focus the lens. Helical focus is annoying when you're doing this, but if you play around with it, you can get it to work. You can probably figure out how to protect the body on your own.

I'm willing to take risks like that, but I understand others aren't. As I see it, the money I've put into my equipment is really to purchase the images I take with it, not to have more stuff.

Thank you for the congratulations. Good luck on your adventures too!

Edit: "comfortable" -> "comfortably"

[–]NoFeetSmell 2 points3 points ago

I like your style, upturn :) Cheers!

[–]mycatkins 1 point2 points ago

"As I see it, the money I've put into my equipment is really to purchase the images I take with it, not to have more stuff."

going to be quoting this to my photography class next time someone bitches about weather or testing conditions.

[–]upturn 0 points1 point ago

And that would be a really wonderful compliment. Thank you.

In possible partial defense of your students, different people go into a photography class for different reasons. Some just want to get more competent at taking their vacation snaps or documenting their kids growing up. Not everyone's goals are rewarded by a willingness to walk through hurricanes and crawl around on city sidewalks.

But I would go on to tell them that for those of us who are trying to create work that is meaningful beyond an audience of friends and family, a willingness to accept risk tremendously expands your versatility and potential for reward that doesn't always exist within the confines of safety.

[–]mycatkins 1 point2 points ago

you're so insightful

[–]upturn 0 points1 point ago

Thanks! Someday when I'm old, decrepit, and people want to take high contrast HDR photos of the wrinkles on my face, I hope to spend my time sitting on a rocking chair, mumbling insightful-sounding old man things at people who pass by.

[–]FearTheHump 1 point2 points ago

When I eventually upgrade my D90 it will probably be to something like a D800 or similar.

[–]NoFeetSmell 0 points1 point ago

I was thinking D700 simply because I'm hoping it might be quite a bit cheaper, with the release of the D800. Anything would be an upgrade from my trusty D3000 :P

[–]Styles_m4 4 points5 points ago

That is breathtaking. Switzerland is definitely in my top 5 countries to visit.

[–]mycatkins 0 points1 point ago

that was written so beautifully.

[–]PaulHajns 7 points8 points ago

now, this is PORN picture :) really breathtaking picture!!

[–]Ray8157 6 points7 points ago

Is this where the grinch lives? reminds me of the valley with hooville and everything.

[–]idefix24 6 points7 points ago

There's been a lot of Switzerland on this subreddit lately! Not that I'm complaining, it's a beautiful place.

[–]imjongilling 2 points3 points ago

Thanks for the new background :)

[–]zukeen 2 points3 points ago

Masterpiece.

[–]onemissingbutton 2 points3 points ago

This doesn't even look real. Amazing.

[–]chaosgod -1 points0 points ago

Probably isn't.

[–]MendoGreen 2 points3 points ago

I should have cashed in a long time ago; this has been my background for over a year.

[–]coldplaying 1 point2 points ago

Wow. It's nice to take a minute out of the day to think about what a crazy/astounding/enchanting/bewitching planet this is. This really does remind me that we live in a beautiful world.

Go Earth

[–]Half-sauce 2 points3 points ago

Simply breath taking. What a photo.

[–]dialtech 1 point2 points ago

Where in Switzerland is this?

[–]charliedonsurf1 0 points1 point ago

It think that Mountain is the Titlis overlooking Engelberg. I could Be wrong though, but if i am it still does Not matter because that Area is just As beautiful

[–]danadam 0 points1 point ago

From apod description the city is Balzers and the mountain is Mittlerspitz.

[–]penguincore 0 points1 point ago

WOW...stunning

[–]Waterrat 1 point2 points ago

To say that is stunning is an understatement!

[–]gillpatrick 0 points1 point ago

Wow. This is probably the most awe striking picture in earthporn. Moon, Venus, sunset over gorgeous mountains, street lights glowing under the low clouds. Just... wow!

[–]Kuchenmeister 0 points1 point ago

I really thought this was two pictures in one with two different horizons blended together, this is an amazing photo.

[–]Garnion 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the wallpaper!

[–]scu 0 points1 point ago

This picture has got it all: composition, exposure, proper saturation, interesting lighting and a stunning subject. Bravo!

[–]pkkid 0 points1 point ago

One of my favorite things to see is the outline on the dark side of the moon. It looks stunning in this photo. :)

[–]mssadiqahmed 0 points1 point ago

This is genuinely beautiful.

[–]e8dingo 1 point2 points ago

Looks very much like Gimmelwald, here's some reference pics, although much of Switzerland does give these spectacular views.

[–]dudejust 0 points1 point ago

I instantly changed this into my background.

[–]weasuL 0 points1 point ago

I know your skills. Did you photoshop it to be even more badass before you set it as your wallpaper?

[–]dudejust 0 points1 point ago

Nope. It's perfect as it is.

[–]SwimSquirrel 1 point2 points ago

I made this into a wallpaper. I couldn't scale it down and crop it without ruining it, so this is how it turned out.

[–]upturn 0 points1 point ago

You captured some of the most compelling content in the photograph, but it's really a different image now. I see a lot of thematic and textural contrast, wich is missing. The bright clouds in the valley, with their soft flows and neon colors, play against the darker coarse snow on the hill side. The wood structure at the bottom left has a feeling of isolation and loneliness compared to the bright lights from the town above it. The Sun falling below the mountain gives a few more strokes of light and color, which are peeled back behind the Moon.

I think you ought to just satisfy yourself with some letterbox-style bars on the sides.

[–]SwimSquirrel 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, I was disappointed as well. :P I couldn't capture the entire scene well so I settled with a different focus.

[–]upturn 0 points1 point ago

Well, don't let me knock it down too much. You still have a kickass wallpaper on your desktop now :P

[–]neurot 0 points1 point ago

What village is this? in 2000 i went to Martigny, stayed at a house that high up on the hill/mountain. the view was basically the same. But the camera captured an incredible moment in this picture.

Damn i miss that visit.

[–]magicwoods 0 points1 point ago

I think it is somewhere above "bad ragaz"

[–]neurot 0 points1 point ago

Cool, thanks.

[–]chaosgod 0 points1 point ago

I'm curious, anyone know how much photoshop was involved here? Looks like a composite of at least three images to me.

[–]Good_Time 1 point2 points ago

One of my favorites. This has been my phone background for 8 months now!

[–]scottagro 0 points1 point ago

There's only one song I can think of when looking at this photo.

[–]Eternitras 1 point2 points ago

Yeah I'm probably gonna be doing a pastel piece using this later. Thank you so much!

[–]The_Knowledge -1 points0 points ago

Hey you; it is meant to be EarthPorn not UniversePorn crop that sky out.

[–]magicwoods 0 points1 point ago

If the picture would show a little bit more from the left side you could see my hometown :)
