NASA gets an AMAZING image of a CME (flickr.com)

So if the CME moves at 900 miles per second, is that video in realtime or is it sped up or slowed down?
[–]JiminyPiminy 16 points17 points18 points 6 days ago
"A long filament erupted on the sun on August 31, 2012, shown here in a movie captured by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) from noon EDT to 1:45 a.m. the next morning."
It's sped up considerably.
[–]A_Polite_Noise 4 points5 points6 points 5 days ago
Yeah, that legitimately made me jump when I watched it. I was not expecting it to whip out at me like that.

look up VY canis majoris it makes Betelgeuse look like a pebble http://www.futuretimeline.net/images/vy-canis-majoris-times-bigger.jpg
[–]A_Polite_Noise 26 points27 points28 points 5 days ago*
These pictures...don't awe me the way that they should. I'm fascinated by it and can appreciate the scale to a degree, but I think that we are just dealing with sizes that I can't even really wrap my head around; even just comparing the earth to the sun, or hell, comparing my own physical body to the planet earth...it's so abstract, I can't really grasp it. You bring in Betelgeuse and VY canis majoris and you might as well be speaking gibberish...even with the comparison picture my mind just gives up at a certain point trying to "visualize" it internally. I wonder if astronauts feel it differently? If i went into orbit on the ISS, or walked on the moon, and looked at the earth, would that perspective give me a better sense of scale or would it just be some blue circle in the sky without giving me more of a sense of the difference? I think about that sometimes; if I was on some awesome spaceship passing as close as I can to VY canis majoris, would I recognize its scale or would it just be a somewhat larger circle in the sky to all the other stars I pass in my journey; dimensions and such...bah. Sorry. Rambling. Things of this scale set my brainmeat pulsing in weird ways....
[–]PirateMud 8 points9 points10 points 5 days ago

[–]Enti_San 3 points4 points5 points 5 days ago
...and it is even far from being the biggest star in the universe
[–]Proclaim_the_Name 2 points3 points4 points 5 days ago
There's got to be a limit though. Too massive and a star might collapse into a blackhole; not dense enough and the star might just dissipate into space or blown apart by solar winds.
[–]cormega 2 points3 points4 points 5 days ago
Vy Canis Majoris is the largest known star. Most experts believe there are probably some stars out there that are bigger, but not hugely bigger, due to pretty much what you said.
[–]northenerinthesouth 0 points1 point2 points 5 days ago
I definitely remember hearing that we had figured out some set limits on the possible sizes of stars, and then we found Vy Canis Majoris.

The thing that has always bothered me about this site: I'm pretty sure a chicken egg isn't as tall as a person's face.
[–]TIAFAASITICE 0 points1 point2 points 5 days ago
The scale appears to be different outside the circle, check with the Measure tool.
The measure tool has that egg at 150.2mm. That's closer to an ostrich egg than a chicken egg.
[–]TIAFAASITICE 1 point2 points3 points 5 days ago
You're right. For some reason I read that as 50mm the first time.
The comment even says 15cm in the [source-code](view-source:http://cosmicscale.appspot.com/js/ui.js), perhaps he originally meant to use an ostrich egg:
// Chicken egg: 15 cm // Adjust for object to picture ratio = 1.7 meters -> 17/0.822 = 20.7 g_objects.add(new ScaleObject(Math.pow(10, -1), makeImageObjectShapes({ src: MediaHelper.getImageUrl("chicken_egg.png"), x: +15.5, y: +4, width: 15.0, height: 15.0, caption: "Chicken egg" })));
[–]Volsunga 0 points1 point2 points 5 days ago
The scale is logarithmic. The farther you get from the center of the circle, the greater the distance is per pixel.
[–]I_Dont_Have_One 5 points6 points7 points 5 days ago
I really like this video showing how much bigger the sun is than Earth. Then the sun's dwarfed by Rigel and Rigel by VY Canis Majoris. Music's awesome, too.

[–]Gecko99 1 point2 points3 points 5 days ago
Like many interesting animals, we can kill them all by cooking them and eating them with drawn butter at a rate faster than they can reproduce. Crab fishing for that species has already greatly reduced their numbers in relatively shallow water.
By eating their delicious meat.

It's weird how there is so much less noise in the yellowish one. I wonder if it has to do with color channels or what.
[–]Treshnell 13 points14 points15 points 5 days ago
Each color represents a different wavelength of light. Specifically, the 335, 171, 304 and 131 Angstrom wavelengths. If you look at them closely, you'll see how each image, while it retains the same general shape, is slightly different because it's focusing on a completely different wavelength of light. These are all in the extreme UV range (visible light is in the 7000-4000 Angstrom range).
[–]tozer83 1 point2 points3 points 5 days ago
are these images taken at the same time as well or is there a delay at all?
[–]Treshnell 2 points3 points4 points 5 days ago
Good question, I'm not sure. I'm on the assumption that the photos are simultaneous. The Solar Dynamics Observatory has four telescopes it uses to capture these images, and for comparison value, it would make sense that they would capture the same image in different wave lengths.

[–]jugalator 5 points6 points7 points 5 days ago
These events always make me worried. They make the Sun look so fragile. I really don't like to see it shed massive amounts of materials like this... Chaotic things feeding life everywhere kind of worry me.
[–]themadness2009 16 points17 points18 points 5 days ago*
You have absolutely nothing to worry about! And by using a little bit of math you can easily show why:
A typical Coronal Mass Ejection has about 2x1012 kg (two with twelve zeros) worth of material (this is a slightly low estimate but it isn't too bad) [reference] which may seem like a lot, but actually isn't that much: according to Wolfram-Alpha, it is about 1/40th of the estimated biomass on Earth or just under half the total world oil production mass in 2004 [LMWTFY]. Interesting side note: comparing the total biomass to world oil production mass in 2004 gives an insight into just how much humanity can affect planet earth.
Now to even further assuage your fears, you can pretty easily show that if the sun were to undergo coronal mass ejections every hour, where it ejected on average 2x1012 kg for each ejection, then it would take roughly 8300 times the current age of the universe to full 'eject' the suns total mass. For those playing at home, that is over 110 trillion years or roughly 1x1018 hours. It would take a while.
[ninja edit!: reddit nuked my 'stars' for multiplication]
[–]utexaspunk 4 points5 points6 points 5 days ago
I'm not worried about the Sun running out of mass... but what would a direct hit from an ejection like this do to us? And if that's not a threat, what size CME would be a threat?
[–]Cyrius 2 points3 points4 points 5 days ago
And if that's not a threat, what size CME would be a threat?
GOES 15 measured this as a C8.4 flare. The flare that caused the 1989 Quebec blackout was roughly 500x as strong. The most powerful recorded flare was about 10000x as strong. Thankfully that one was pointed away from Earth.
[–]utexaspunk 1 point2 points3 points 5 days ago
The most powerful recorded flare was about 10000x as strong. Thankfully that one was pointed away from Earth.
What would that have done if it had hit Earth?
[–]Cyrius 4 points5 points6 points 5 days ago
Hard to describe without sounding like a doomsday nut.
Communications satellites dead. GPS dead. ISS astronauts beating a hasty retreat to the ground.
Power grids destroyed. Massive currents would be induced in long high-voltage lines, burning out the large transformers. There is no spare capacity to repair or replace these quickly. Most of the world would be without electricity for months.
You'd also see massive currents on railroad tracks and pipelines. The railroad would just have their switching and signaling equipment blown out, but the pipelines could experience accelerated corrosion, leaks, and explosions.
Your car would be fine, but the satnav wouldn't work and traffic signals would be dead. If you tried to fill it up, gas stations would have no fuel, no power for the pumps, and no communications to payment processing systems.
[–]ForceOgravity 1 point2 points3 points 5 days ago
You arent sounding like a doomsday nut when the things you say are 100% true.
[–]jugalator 0 points1 point2 points 5 days ago
8 hours: The time it took to take me from worrying about CME mass shedding to one directed at us! ;)
You should. It has happened before, in 1859. The difference is they weren't reliant on systems that die in such an event.

[–]aedeos 10 points11 points12 points 5 days ago

[–]lucasvb 49 points50 points51 points 5 days ago
I found the circle that matched the curvature of the Sun, and used its radius and the ratio of Earth's radius to the Sun's in order to find Earth's reference radius.
[–]aedeos 7 points8 points9 points 5 days ago
I was afraid reddit was going to downvote me for being pedantic for asking that question. But I was honestly curious and you answered it smashingly. Thanks for such an informative, interesting post and process.
[–]nawitus 0 points1 point2 points 5 days ago
There's a slight problem with that technique, though. The Earth's size is correct, if we imagine the Earth to be located near the "horizon" of Sun in that picture. The ejection doesn't happen near the horizon though, as it is closer to the camera, so the Earth should be scaled up a bit.
In other words, the image would be correct, if the ejection happened to be located exactly at the horizon of Sun in the picture.
[–]lucasvb 2 points3 points4 points 5 days ago
I know, but since I don't know how to correct for that in this particular image, I left it alone. I even rounded up from what I calculated (31.2 px to 32 px) with that correction in mind.
However, considering the distances involved, it may be safe to assume the projection rays are nearly parallel, which means an orthographic projection is a pretty good approximation. The issue you pointed out doesn't exist in an orthographic projection.

[–]axnjackson11 11 points12 points13 points 5 days ago
Four images of a filament on the sun from August 31, 2012 are shown here in various wavelengths of light as captured by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). Starting from the upper left and going clockwise they represent light in the: 335, 171, 304 and 131 Angstrom wavelengths. Since each wavelength of light generally corresponds to solar material at a particular temperature, scientists can compare images like this to observe how the material moves during an eruption. Credit: NASA/SDO/AIA/GSFC
this is from the nasa website
[–]rychan 0 points1 point2 points 5 days ago
Angstrom wavelengths? Is that common in astronomy. I've never seen that. I'm used to seeing nanometers.
335, 171, 304 and 131 Angstrom wavelengths
equals
33.5, 17.1, 30.4 and 13.1 nanometer wavelengths
Which means these are all in the "extreme ultraviolet" range. Heck, 10nm is considered the boundary to x-rays.

[–]The_Ambrosian 9 points10 points11 points 5 days ago
It's a separate browser addon. A lot of redditors use it because it means you don't have to open images in another tab.
[–]this_sort_of_thing 1 point2 points3 points 5 days ago
RES has the + box though. Also when you use the + box it also colours the link blue so you know you've already seens it. I'm not sure if hoverzoom does that

Hover zoom works for the rest of the internet though... also hover zoom is quicker.

But does hover zoom turn links blue
[–]MacMcIrish 0 points1 point2 points 5 days ago
It does, the setting is off by default.
[–]attrition0 0 points1 point2 points 5 days ago
In contrast to your other reply, HZ does turn links blue for me. It didn't used to, but seems to do so since about a month or two back. I cannot immediately recall if this only started happening when I started using Win8, so there is a possibility I'm conflating HZ+Win8 with HZ in general.
[–]Zpiritual 0 points1 point2 points 5 days ago
Yes. You need to manually turn it on though in settings.
No. But again, internet beyond reddit.
It actually does though, click the icon in your address bar to bring up the settings and there will be an option for it. You can also set it to pre-load all the images on a page so there is no delay when you open them.
I was saying it works beyond reddit, kinda my point.
That's not what I was addressing. He was asking whether or not hoverzoom would add the links to his computers history and turning the links purple (much like RES does), so that he wouldn't be looking at the same links over and over if he refreshes his page.

Kind of a silly question, but is this a completely real image? If I was in a position to see a CME with my own eyes would it look like this?
[–]Hedgehogs4Me 8 points9 points10 points 5 days ago
Short answer, it would look roughly like death.
Long answer, even if you had the darkest, most radiation-resistant glass ever, still probably not. This image is a composite of several very short wavelength shots. See this post for more details.
[–]cojack22 1 point2 points3 points 5 days ago
Yes I'm well aware that I'd be killed but I just wanted to know how "real" the image is.
What I got from that post is that none of the light captured to make this image was in the visible light range anyways? So a human would not see anything like this?
[–]Hedgehogs4Me 2 points3 points4 points 5 days ago
I believe this image is visible light of a different CME. Not sure about the sizing, there can be a huge discrepancy between the size of things in visible versus invisible light spectra. As you can see, though, it looks pretty different.

what ever happened to that telescope that the ...NSA?.. gave to NASA? Wasn't it suppose to be like 10x stronger than Hubble? Will we see pictures from it? I would imagine they would be splendid photos.
Those two telescopes are years away from being used for anything.
I see, thank you for filling me in on this. Can you explain why they aren't functional? Also, was it the NSA that donated them?
Can you explain why they aren't functional?
The biggest thing is that they don't have cameras in them. They're basically bodies and mirrors.
Also, was it the NSA that donated them?

Should of course point out that they are not "10x stronger " than Hubble, not that strength means anything in astronomy. They collect just as much light and will have lower resolving power.
