Pro tip: If you're a geeky-looking thirtysomething guy, make sure you're not wearing a blue shirt with tan pants before going shopping at Best Buy. Trust me on this one.

[–]Biinaryy 84 points85 points ago

Or do it on purpose, in masses. http://youtu.be/KgUIbPfhSuo

[–]Pookies27 49 points50 points ago

As an employee of best buy I think this is great. I'm sure none of the employees cared what so ever because they are mostly high school/college aged kids. From a managers perspective I understand asking them to leave. From what it looked like in the video a good amount of people were standing there waiting for someone to talk to (as opposed to looking at CDs games etc). That is an immediate red flag. It made them seem more like they were going to try and distract everyone and rob even though in hindsight it was just for comedy. I have seen a lot of groups try the distraction tactic. Everything from multiple people swarm a department, customer claiming he lost their kid, as well as using someone with one leg to try and steal. While it was done for fun there is an effect on the business and managers have to run their business.

[–]fco83 11 points12 points ago

Yeah, some of those 'flash rob' groups are pretty damn good at what they do.

[–]yellowpride 17 points18 points ago

When I worked retail at a small shop in the mall where I was the only worker, 3 guys came in, 2 distracted me while the other stole money out of my wallet (about $100) that I kept under the counter and they even tried to open the register but couldnt get it open. Fuck people.

[–]zeitistjetzt 14 points15 points ago

I went to Circuit City after work. I was working at Target at the time. Oops.

[–]_catfacts 4 points5 points ago

Anytime someone sees me in khakis they automatically think I work there.

[–]Flyboy214 4 points5 points ago

In New Jersey, Circuit City is gone

[–]30SecondstoMars 7 points8 points ago

I love the cop in this video "You can ask them to leave but we aren't going to arrest anyone for wearing a blue polo shirt.."

[–]Frankyminion 0 points1 point ago

That was awesome.

[–]GiantDeviantPiano -1 points0 points ago

Can't see YouTube, but I'm guessing that's the improv everywhere that they talked about on TED talks?

[–]Mrbick 14 points15 points ago

Yea I found this out a few months back, I pretty much sold a older lady on a computer.

[–]vnkid 10 points11 points ago

You should have convinced her to buy a cheaper one on newegg or at microcenter/office depot.

[–]GorgeouslyHumbl 24 points25 points ago

From what I can tell, there isn't much of a markup on desktop machines and other big purchases. You won't find video games over sixty dollars and you probably won't find laptops that are 10% more expensive than what's being sold next door. From what I gather, Best Buy makes a large bulk of its profits from service offers, overpriced accessories, and warranties.

[–]patientbearr 5 points6 points ago

This is for the most part true. In the brief time I worked at Best Buy, I learned that they only sell computers and most hardware for about 5-10% more than they buy it for from the manufacturer, and most of their money comes from accessories and warranties, which are typically never redeemed. We also had to memorize three things that could conceivably go wrong with every product, to convince people to buy the warranty. My go-to was that a power surge could roll through and just roast all of your electronics. People are idiots.

[–]starbuxed 4 points5 points ago

I have used the shit out my protection plan, I have gone through 3 laptops in 8 yrs.

[–]ShakaUVM 2 points3 points ago

My go-to was that a power surge could roll through and just roast all of your electronics. People are idiots.

You never lived in my college apartment. SDG&E either loved fucking with us, or we just had the world's shittest power line.

More than once, all the lightbulbs in my place exploded and had to be replaced. Roasted my computer through the surge protector - got Belkin to actually pay for a new motherboard.

[–]SomeFakeInternetName 11 points12 points ago

And people dumb enough to buy Monster Cables. Selling a half dozen of those would cover most stores overhead for a few months.

[–]xTheOOBx 1 point2 points ago

Best Buy makes profits? That's news to me. Best Buy is failing fast.

[–]ademu5 6 points7 points ago

newegg has cheaper things now? I suggest you just erupted from a 2002 time capsule.

[–]HotCrockets 7 points8 points ago

? The labor day sale that just ended was phenomenal. I picked up a 3D Blu Ray drive, a 240GB SSD, and a 3TB 7200 RPM HDD for around 250$.

[–]Serinus 0 points1 point ago

Best buy laptop/computer prices are competitive with pretty much anywhere. They just hope you pick up printer, hdmi, and ethernet cables on the way out.

[–]TheSmartestMan 2 points3 points ago

Nope, the blue shirt is all it takes. I'm a redneck looking guy, thick goatee, and I still get harassed in blue jeans in a baseball cap. I have to remind myself before I go, not to wear the shirt.

[–]zubenelkeneshi91 1 point2 points ago

I do this just for shits and giggles.

[–]ChaoticGood_Guy_Greg 2 points3 points ago

Accidentally wore a red polo into Target, couldn't understand why I kept getting asked where shit was until I got home and saw myself in the mirror.

[–]Confucius_says 1 point2 points ago

man it happened to me once, i avoid blue shirt tan pants now in all situations even if i'm not planning to be shopping or anything just because of how much i hated being mistaken for an employee there.

[–]projectmoon 1 point2 points ago

Or in my case, be wearing clothing that isn't representative of Best Buy at all...

After telling the person I didn't work there and she said "I know" and tried to ask me a question anyway.

[–]deidru 1 point2 points ago

Or look remotely tech savvy. Female here, wearing black (after work). I was holding my ex-laptop and searching for a good shell computer, didn't have the time to order one. Anyhow, I was asked by at least five or six people for help. Worst part was I was so upset about losing my laptop, I was half in tears....

..... This happens to me in Barnes and Noble as well... Hindsight, maybe I should stop being so nice.

[–]dasqoot 0 points1 point ago

The bad one about working for Home Depot is only employees are going to be wearing collared t-shirts. Customers wear contractor tees or dresses 99% of the time. You have to sneak out the door through the kitchen cabinet aisle to grab a smoke.

[–]overlord220 0 points1 point ago

Used to work on a golf course with a red polo. I walked into best buy one day and people started to ask me questions.

Red motherfuckers, do you not see this? Fucking shorts as well.

[–]EGsecretweapon 122 points123 points ago

BBY employee here. Not saying I am super knowledgeable about everything techy, but I generally know more than the customers that I help. Main reason for this, the people that know their shit like me either order stuff online (amazon, newegg etc) or they just dont talk to me cause they know exactly what they want. From experience, the ones that think they know everything, and attempt to show it off, are generally ass backwards in their knowledge.

[–]ethanwc 12 points13 points ago

Agreed. I'm quitting this Thursday, but this is especially the case in Best Buy Mobile.

I know a lot about phones, because I've been selling them and reading blogs daily for the last 10 years.

[–]sloppychris 14 points15 points ago

Most people who sell phones haven't read phone blogs for 10 years.

[–]ethanwc 5 points6 points ago

That's where they faulter...

engadget.com bgr.com phonescoop.com theverge.com 9to5mac.com iMore.com

It's how I know what's around the corner, or what's faulty, or how to fix issues with particular devices. These are important to be a decent salesman.

[–]wollawolla 7 points8 points ago

I'm betting you were an awesome salesman. Unfortunately, the reason that Best Buy has the reputation that is has, is because people like you just aren't paid enough to justify sticking around. I work at a Best Buy and I see it all the time. Anybody with respectable product knowledge gets poached away by one of the major cell companies once Best Buy is done teaching them how to sell.

[–]drparton21 2 points3 points ago

Then you're the exception, rather than the norm.

People who know their shit like this should be paid well so that they don't want to quit. Best Buy doesn't see the value in doing this.

[–]megagoosey 24 points25 points ago

Ex BBY employee here, and yeeeeeep. There used to be this old guy who dressed up in this AMD t shirt and came to our store multiple times a week to try and show employees how much smarter he was than them. Most of my co workers were very tech savvy and could tell right off the man was an idiot and didn't let him get to them, but we had a few younger workers who he made break down with his bullshit douchebaggery. One female employee left crying.

Sure, plenty of Best Buy employees are stupid. I worked with some. Plus, the quality of the place has taken a nose dive now that people use the place as an Amazon showroom and sales have dropped off. Even given that, though, this thread leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

Don't be an asshole to customer service reps because you think you're better or smarter than them. It doesn't make you cool or badass, it just makes you a fucking asshole.

[–]ICE417 8 points9 points ago

Agreed. There are some BBY employees that are total idiots. For the most part though, we know our stuff. Either from learning it first hand or being taught it to pass it on to the customers. The people that come in thinking that they know better have just this look of defeat when you prove them wrong AND show them they are wrong. I once had a customer ask me for the "New Samsung tv with 120 horsepower." HORSEPOWER. When I tried to explain the term is "Hz" and not horsepower, the customer got mad and walked saying they did their research and they know better then me.

Tl;Dr employees are knowledgeable. TVs don't have horsepower.

[–]starbuxed 8 points9 points ago

You know what, TVs should have horsepower. That's just manly.

[–]perixe 2 points3 points ago

a tv you have to pull-start

[–]montalslog 0 points1 point ago

Our AMD rep was a conspiracy theorist. Not reasonable FBI-in-your-data stuff, but JFK-killed-by-Nazis stuff. Everyone worked hard when he was there, better a customer than a half hour of his babble.

[–]your_moms_penis 4 points5 points ago

Relevant xkcd http://xkcd.com/272/

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

I don't work at a best buy, but I am in retail. I'd just like to add that, yeah you might know more than me but I know where everything is and how much it is.

[–]ICE417 21 points22 points ago

Also a BBY employee here, everything he said is true. Generally the customers don't have a clue what they are talking about but seem to think they do. I had this one customer tell me that his 8 year old DLP tv displayed a 1080p picture. He was buying a converter box for it. When I told him that wouldn't give him a full 1080p picture he flipped out. He started yelling about how "I don't know his set." When I explained that's how that particular price of technology works, he told me to fuck off and stormed off.

[–]TheAmazingSpider 15 points16 points ago

But there are 8 year old DLP televisions that have a resolution of 1080p...

[–]Pookies27 4 points5 points ago

Can't agree more with you. Usually if you knew your stuff you may have asked for the location of something. The rest of the people were split up between people who honestly admitted they didnt know a lot, people who tried to make it seem like they knew a ton but were really idiots, and people who had an IT guy to help them. The last group was my favorite. I would have customers tell me they don't need and service plan for their computer because their "tech guy" could fix it. 4 months later they realize that: 1 their company tech guy does not have the time/knowledge to fix your computer, 2 their 7 year old can use a computer but can't fix it, or 3 antivirus is not 100% effective.

[–]thawawayed 1 point2 points ago

I have a similar job. I ABSOLUTELY HATE people trying to test me. I have a degree in computer science and keep up to date with most tech news, I'm only there while I work on my own software developments on the side until I move at the end of the year.

When I get customers that come in all smug and pretentious, treating me like I believe the bigger the screen the better the computer, I don't think. 'Wow this guy is smart, I as a simpleton know nothing compared to this god of knowledge'. No, instead I just realize that you're a dipshit and I'm wasting my time with you. In fact, I won't tell you not to waste your money on some more expensive HDMI cable that has no added bonus, or some absurdly priced HP laptop rather than the Toshiba we have which is better and cheaper. I will let you make those mistakes with silent jubilation.

[–]Spibb 6 points7 points ago

BBY? Before Battle of Yavin?

[–]robotsanddiscos 14 points15 points ago

I'm pretty sure that's the stock symbol for Best Buy.

[–]z3ddicus 5 points6 points ago

I'm pretty sure he/she wasn't being serious.

[–]Vocalities 0 points1 point ago

This has been my experience with every job I've ever had.

[–]z3ddicus 0 points1 point ago

As one of the people you are referring to, I can confirm this.

[–]PapaPeento 1 point2 points ago

BBY employee here as well, I once had a customer try and convince me a i3 processor was a single core processor. If I said otherwise I got lashed out at.

[–]mebbee 0 points1 point ago

From experience, the ones that think they know everything, and attempt to show it off, are generally ass backwards in their knowledge.

This seems to be a good general rule that can be applied to more than this instance.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

In Norway I have to order everything online because all the shops have dubbel priced electronics since only clueless people go there.

[–]Bouse 0 points1 point ago

I'm an inventory rep who used to be customer service and geek squad, which kind of entailed learning bits and pieces from each department especially computers and phones.

We have almost entirely new management at my store too, so almost none of them know I'm ex-customer service/GS so I get to play dumb and avoid all of their nonsense and still get paid as much as I did in the previous departments.

While I'm sure some of you people on Reddit are alright, all I've learned from working the more customer service oriented jobs is this from Dr. Perry Cox.

[–]Potchi79 0 points1 point ago

The ones who do know what they're doing are just previewing stuff there before they buy it on Amazon or newegg.

[–]Taisen91 35 points36 points ago

IF YOU KNOW MORE THAN A BEST BUY EMPLOYEE, THEN YOU SHOULD KNOW NOT TO SHOP THERE. YOU SHOULD PROBABLY KNOW TO BUY SHIT ONLINE WITH NO TAX.

[–]bearsa113609 15 points16 points ago

Best Buy is there so you can look at the product before you buy it on amazon.

[–]starbuxed 1 point2 points ago

I just rape the shit out there protection plan, I am hard on laptops.

[–]Hadlockk 2 points3 points ago

You have to pay tax on Amazon purchases sent to Texas now. California pays sales tax starting this fall, combined with NY, KA, KY, ND, PA and WA almost one third of the US will pay sales tax for Amazon purchases, including the three largest states.

[–]IUvipss21 0 points1 point ago

That's cute, you guys have an option to shop locally and pay no tax. GG Canada. I remember when NCIX was only west coast so we didn't have to pay PST. =[

[–]rcinsf 0 points1 point ago

NOT HERE IN CA

NEWEGG TAXES ALL THE THINGS

BOLD IS THE NEXT LEVEL MOTHERFUCKER

[–]nerplederple 68 points69 points ago

Someone literally told me this one day as I stood at my counter answering his idiotic questions... I was having a bad day and no longer cared* about my employment there so I responded: "Then why are you standing in a (computer retailer) speaking to a counter-monkey? Why don't you fuck yourself right out that door and never return?"

He was... angry... confused... MORE ANGRY. "WHRAGARBEL MANAGER FIRE THIS PEON!" etc etc.

My boss asked him what he wanted and then cut him off two words in: "Look, you just pissed off the one person in this store that understands your problem, good luck with that one pal".

Mr Knows-more-than-me sullenly stood around for a bit... then left.

The sad part is... I sorta was hoping I'd get fired for that.

*edited for missing past tense. I do not work there any longer. Incredibly, it's not because I was fired.

[–]Slidenasty 71 points72 points ago

I love it when a manager stands up for their employees. Even if the job is shit.

[–]bigglesxyz 4 points5 points ago

Exactly. Especially in retail, where people are fucking crazy.

[–]brezzz 8 points9 points ago

I like when they ask you a question, you give an answer, the truth, that comes from at least some experience with what is going on, and then they reject your answer and argue with you.

"I'm getting an HDD failure error on boot , about how much would it cost to fix that?"

"If you need the data off of it, and want it set up like it once was, probably around $300 for everything, possibly more."

"No, it's not that expensive, last time they did [some simple unrelated thing] for only $30,"

I feel like being the most complete smart ass, but I eventually explain that it is a more involved process than something like that and that we have to order a replacement and it takes a lot of man hours.

In all honesty, it is a complete rip off for what they pay us and how long it takes, but my point if that it is proportional to the rip off with the $30 simple task. Quit whining and come in and pay or have the kid down the street undercut us by $100 and you can come in a month later wondering why your desktop went black, your copy of windows is not genuine and your hot keys didn't work.

[–]MalcolmY 4 points5 points ago

Come on, most of the time the kid down the street does the exact same thing you do. Or what I do at home. Back up, format, re-install OS, restore. You don't do complete magic back there.

[–]Zympth 2 points3 points ago

Better luck next time :)

[–]nexus_5 0 points1 point ago

Yes. That may be true. But there is no point in going anywhere without a purpose.

[–]ClearlyDoesntGetIt 42 points43 points ago

I went to Ace, Home Deopt, Walmart, and Sears looking for a hatchet. No one in the store could seem to grasp the term or what it was. I finally went to REI where they knew exactly what i was looking for. The whole experience made me die a little inside.

[–]freeaddition 33 points34 points ago

I did the same thing! The guy at Ace actually asked me "why would you think we would have something like that?" I dunno, maybe your wall of hammers and axes?

[–]celerynomore 18 points19 points ago

Why would you look for an outdoor tool in a home improvement store?

[–]feralcatromance 14 points15 points ago

Maybe he wanted to build a log cabin house the way man was supposed to. Did you think of that? Did you?

[–]ethanwc 9 points10 points ago

Because axes, that's why.

[–]christopherawesome 4 points5 points ago

I work at a Rona (Canadian home improvement chain) and we sell a bunch of different axes and hatchets, and they can be used in home improvement, if someone wants to install a new floor or change their insulation in their walls, an axe is a great tool to demolish the old one.

[–]Lots42 0 points1 point ago

Apparently Ace is now the Fuck You place.

Around here, Loews will all but build it for you. Home Depot is just crammed with lazy liars.

[–]drowsap 21 points22 points ago

Why not skip the fancy words and just tell them you want a little baby axe

[–]ClearlyDoesntGetIt 0 points1 point ago

They couldn't seem to grasp that concept.

[–]statikuz 3 points4 points ago

You must have not looked very hard at Home Depot - they weren't in the same department as all the hammers, axes, wrecking bars, crowbars, etc.?

[–]ClearlyDoesntGetIt 2 points3 points ago

Looked all over, all they had were axe heads and bow saws, which is actually one thing that i needed anyway.

[–]TheOpus 2 points3 points ago

You're telling me people didn't know what a HATCHET was? Jesus.

[–]ArtistCeleste 4 points5 points ago

I have used tools every day for about 15 years. I am also a petite young women. I go into Home Depot and everyone is always eager to help me. They are also often eager to offer bad advice and sometimes say things like, "you're too pretty to be in here."

[–]Spibb 13 points14 points ago

To be fair, at home depot every employee is required to ask every person if they need help and give suggestions. They also give them little to no knowledge training on the topics and they're expected to learn on the job.

[–]ArtistCeleste 8 points9 points ago

I know. I've worked there before. It's still better to say "I'm not sure" than to give unknown answers. For instance I came in looking for plain steel chain. I did not want galvanized or zinc coated. I asked for some and three different employees tried to convince me that it was perfectly fine to weld galvanized steel chain. I went home with some and looked it up, to make sure galvanized steel was not zinc coated. Of course that is exactly what it is. I just doubted myself because three employees spent time trying to convince me I was wrong.

[–]mokthraka 4 points5 points ago

they said it was safe to weld galvanized steel O_O? seriously? I mean, it can be, but you have to take precautions.

[–]slightlystartled 8 points9 points ago

Fucking hell. On occasion, I had girlfriends drag me with them to mechanics, even if they knew as much about cars as me(or more), just to get straight info and a fair price. Invariably, the mechanic would ignore the girl and talk to me.

[–]Moustachiod_T-Rex 7 points8 points ago

On average, which gender do you think is more knowledgeable about cars?

Humans innately find patterns and use those patterns to compartmentalise different classes into neat little boxes then apply that one overriding assumption to everything in the box.

I know it sucks, especially for the minority that bucks the trend, but it's how people work.

[–]tothebrothel 1 point2 points ago

I saw one at target a month ago, camping section.

[–]vnkid 0 points1 point ago

Was everyone clearly ESL or something? How do they not understand what a hatchet is?

[–]bigglesxyz 1 point2 points ago

As an ex-Sears employee, that sounds spot on.

We hired a guy to work in the Tools department. Keep in mind, when you work a sales department, you only work there. His background? Banking.

He had no idea the difference between Screw Drivers, had never even seen a Tractor, Push-Mower, or any sort of power tool. He couldn't tell you what you used a wrench for. He lost the company shit loads of money by just telling customers what "he thought" instead of learning.

Then we had that guy who was "a genius" and knew absolutely everything because he grew up as Indiana Jones and MacGyver combined, and would regularly convince people to buy the stupidest shit.

[–]nedstupidflanders 0 points1 point ago

I refuse to believe this. I have to. For my own sanity.

[–]linkismyhero 7 points8 points ago

Best Buy Mobile here. The very large majority of my customers don't know a damn thing about the phones they're buying, and we do, because I send out emails to my department every time we receive new product listing the tech specs, pros and cons of the phones, and the price points.

Yes, some Best Buy stores train their employees poorly. That's NOT every Best Buy.

[–]bordercrossing 0 points1 point ago

I pretty much have to train myself (google FTW), and it's obvious who doesn't bother to learn about their products around here

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]ethanwc 9 points10 points ago

Frackin' liar. I know you bought stuff on Employee discount.

[–]bashfulpanda 8 points9 points ago

I sure fucking do. $350 headphones for $100? Yes please.

[–]ethanwc 2 points3 points ago

Last year they killed the discount to cut off the price if over 50% off. It sucks.

[–]bordercrossing 2 points3 points ago

not in canada; $15.00 battery for 38 cents

[–]Pancake1894 5 points6 points ago

Well sometimes I need my stuff now.

[–]bearsa113609 1 point2 points ago

Wal-Mart

[–]mokthraka 2 points3 points ago

yeah, because there are so many options for buying a new mouse at 9:30. let me order it online.

[–]bigglesxyz 0 points1 point ago

Smartphone apps that give you coupons to individual stores and not line? Wii games being sold for $9.99 to give to my niece/nephew? I'll happily take those deals~

[–]ademu5 14 points15 points ago

People like you and ron swanson were why i loved working at lowe's for a while. Mostly because your statement, at the point of meeting me there, was false (short of plumbing, that crap is a mystery known only by the mario brothers). But the false statement didn't matter, it wasn't the fall of hubris, but the meeting of brothers. I'd show you the hinge you didn't know of, you'd explain the rabbit cut I had never used. I'd toss a cedar 4x4 in a bad wood lot, wrap it and mark it for five dollars with a busted pack of shims and dented wood glue. We may never have shared names, but we knew each other better than lovers ever could.

edit: well. i guess you knew my name.

[–]Lots42 4 points5 points ago

Giggity.

[–]jinklmun 8 points9 points ago

That's how i feel when i go to a Subway. "Bitch, when i say i want triple the bacon, i know what i'm talking about!"

[–]alexmg2420 2 points3 points ago

That's similar to an acquaintance of mine knowing damn well what he's getting himself into when he orders a Septuple Stacker at BK. Yeah, you read that right. Septuple. Stacker.

[–]Lots42 1 point2 points ago

As a former Subway employee, many customers do not know what they are talking about.

[–]azzyistired 6 points7 points ago

I work at best buy, and if u ONLY KNEW... try explaining what a "jigabite" is to someone day in and day out...try helping people get "wee-fee" at their house from their neighbors house or explaining the difference between LED, LCD, and PLASMA every other person. I'm glad you feel you're more educated than the people that work here but you make up such an insignificant percentage of the normal demographic that its saadddd. And another thing, we have DEPARTMENTS! I work in appliances...i can tell you everything you need to know about APPLIANCES! If u call me over to computers (for example) which is NOT my department then I'm not gonna be able to answer your questions to your satisfaction, so before you berate us, talk to the person specified to help you...you'd be surprised how much some of us know.

[–]Sadistfaction 13 points14 points ago

That's how I feel at Michaels. I'm crafty...kinda.

[–]Coldbeam 29 points30 points ago

I read that as "I'm kinda...crafty" and it was much more ominous.

[–]Sadistfaction 0 points1 point ago

Maybe it was...lol

[–]MusedFable 1 point2 points ago

Michaels coupons make me feel like buying at "normal" prices is a complete ripoff.

[–]Taytastrophe 10 points11 points ago

I work at a similar store and I just have to say, don't be that guy.

We don't get paid enough to deal with the amount of shit we put up with as it is, at the very least humor us when we attempt some social interaction. We are all people.

I don't want to talk to you about that fucking TV either.

[–]Rhinosaur90 9 points10 points ago

For me that's the local Fry's. The entire computer section is a bunch of teenage girls who kind of stare at me blankly when I ask a legitimate question.

[–]Trollatio_Caine 4 points5 points ago

I have ...decent experiences with the computer department in Fry's in San Diego, but their components department is damn amazing. Knowledgeable staff, very good selection of hard-to-find parts, etc. I had one guy help me out with an IC some time ago, I was surprised he wasn't working at some high-end electronics manufacturer.

[–]Governor_James 4 points5 points ago

I used to work at a frys. The components section had some of the smartest guys in the store.

[–]Lots42 0 points1 point ago

It's kinda fun to ask tech-questions at Wal-Mart just to watch them all freeze up.

Or hell, any questions.

[–]sgrodgers10 4 points5 points ago

The best part is that Nick Offerman actually is a master woodworker, and definitely knows more than that guy.

[–]oooooniki 5 points6 points ago

Similar, being a Graphic Designer and going to Kinkos

[–]lakk 3 points4 points ago

I use to work with Best Buy before I got laid off and all of that but I must say, the people who come in planning on knowledge battling you are probably the most annoying people. Especially when they don't really take my "Sir, I honestly don't know" as a legitimate response and try to berate me for working at Best Buy and not knowing.

That being said, the focus of the company sales employees has been SALES. The idea was that it didn't matter how much you knew or didn't know, so long as you were able to sell the shit out of something without lying to the customer.

I can't tell you how many times I had to go "back up" in appliances because no one was there or willing to help only to approach the customers to say "Hey I have no idea what I'm doing back here but if you know what you're looking for I am more than happy to get it loaded for you."

Then there were people who would try and bullshit their way through an interaction. And you want to know the sad part about it all? Most people get pissed off when you tell them the truth about not knowing the area. Oh I'm sorry I walked across the store leaving my area just to come over and let you know why no one is helping you as you're standing there waving your arms in the air in the department for the whole 5 minutes you were there.

I'm so bitter. I liked my job. I disliked the business plan, and a lot of the customers. I just wanted to fucking help people pick out their computers so they can go home and go on the internet to watch porn. Holy fuck.

[–]jordanritchie 15 points16 points ago

As an ex-employee of best buy (GeekSquad Autotech mind you) I loved engaging with customers that shared your thoughts.

[–]Aneurin 28 points29 points ago

Another ex-employee here. Nothing bugged me more than when people were pompous assholes about what they think they did or didn't know. If you know more than me I'll gladly admit to being wrong because it means I learned something. Please note that this is different than an opinion, I'm talking about hard, empirical facts. For example, you're probably going to want more than a 400w power supply if you plan on running a 6970. A customer who immediately tells me "Canon is better than Nikon because I had a Canon in the 70s and it was good" and shoots down anything I tell them immediately annoys me, and isn't worth the time to educate on anything except what Canon carries.

Customers who are willing to hear what you have to say even if the 1,000 other employees who helped them are utter idiots are the customers that I enjoy the most. Don't get to asshole level right off the bat and everyone will have a good time.

[–]QuiteUnoriginal 14 points15 points ago

"Company A is better than Company B because of things and stuff. I also hate Company C because of things my friend's aunt maybe said, so don't offer me any of their products. Actually, I'll just take this thing because it looks the coolest."

[–]Aneurin 14 points15 points ago

"Also Apple is the best because of reasons."

[–]celerynomore 13 points14 points ago

Or people with broken Apple computers "why did it break!? It's an Apple!"

[–]etherealcaitiff 4 points5 points ago

Thus, Apple was created.

[–]fishyman 4 points5 points ago

I go with the tried and true, "no thanks, I'm just looking right now." I know what I'm there for though.

[–]Aneurin 2 points3 points ago

Yeah I liked this customer because I didn't have to do anything.

[–]smartalco 2 points3 points ago

you're probably going to want more than a 400w power supply if you plan on running a 6970

Eh, a nice Seasonic unit could do it as long as you aren't pairing it with like 4 raided HDDs. That isn't as much headroom as you'd probably want, but it wouldn't kill anything.

Proof: 340 watts running Crysis (test setup is on page 12, 3.33ghz i7 for the CPU)

[–]drowsap 2 points3 points ago

christian bale's final form

[–]Neltech 2 points3 points ago

as a current mecp master autotech, i know my shit

[–]jbjohnson1 7 points8 points ago

I'm awkward and always say yes when they offer help and I hate when they tells things I already know.

[–]Ampix0 39 points40 points ago

Geeksquad agent here. You might know more then some of the idiots selling things. but 90% of people do not. trust me.

[–]zVulture 7 points8 points ago

Former Geeksquad Agent who was demoted to phones and MP3 players for knowing too much and fixing problems too fast here. Anyone with decent tech knowledge won't usually go into a Best Buy to purchase (almost) anything. There are too many online stores that offer better prices and fast enough shipping to not be an issue. So 80% of the people who come into the store are those who don't know much about the products. The other 20% have some knowledge, are going into look at the physical product or want to avoid shipping.

This isn't true for Home Improvement stores (the source of the pic) as most the items you go there for are cheaper to purchase locally or just not available online. So you will have a greater chance of meeting someone there that knows their shit than you would in an Electronics store.

Also, most people in Best Buy are specialized to their department. You know your own products so you can sell them. But that doesn't mean a Gaming/Media employee understands the cabling and specifications of a Receiver for Home Theater. So "knowing more than you" is really too general as specific knowledge in the are changes between the person you talk to.

[–]Smoked_Herb 6 points7 points ago

I love having a Fry's somewhat nearby.. About the same price as newegg, except I don't have to wait, like newegg

[–]Fhajad 3 points4 points ago

Fuck Fry's though. Holy shit, can't support a terrible company.

[–]Gonza200 2 points3 points ago

"Demoted...for knowing too much and fixing problems too fast here."

"Johnson! You're too good at your job! I'm demoting you!"

That makes a lot of sense.

[–]TokiBumblebee 100 points101 points ago

I never got a chance to thank you guys for charging my grandmother $200+ for erasing all the data on her computer, backing up the empty data for an additional fee, and then selling her useless anti-virus software that doesn't solve any of her initial problems.

So glad this world has you guys.

[–]redbullhamster 40 points41 points ago

Or when they held my moms laptop for a ransom of $1000 after they quoted her 250.

Geek squad rape.

[–]ptrckstwrt 4 points5 points ago

They also out source all the real work to India via "Agent Johnny Utah", a remote desktop client. The most geek squad does now is turn on your disabled wireless adapter.

[–]SB2200 2 points3 points ago

That's pretty far off from the truth. AJU does simple virus removals, that's it. At my (former) Precinct, we wouldn't even allow them to do that much, as they often have multiple computers that they have to be working on, wouldn't pay close attention and would fuck up really easy stuff. The in store Agents typically do all the work.

[–]peachescums 5 points6 points ago

Ironically that's the reason GS gets a lot of elderly customers. Their techy grandchildren don't help their grandma out.

[–]TeHSaNdMaNS 2 points3 points ago

While I doubt there are any stats out there on the matter I would be willing to bet that for every grandparent who doesn't get help there is one who doesn't trust their grandchild to help or when they do help blame them for all the problems they incur causing the grandchild to not want to help.

[–]Smackdownfletch 7 points8 points ago

That anti-virus software helps bog down her new eight core desktop. That shit's way too fast for the general public.

[–]zifu 3 points4 points ago

eight core desktop

ಠ_ಠ

[–]celerynomore 11 points12 points ago

Because this is the fault of everyone who has ever worked for that company, right? Ripping on some guy who works for some place that employs tens of thousands of people for the one time not even you, but someone you know, got screwed by them just makes you look like an asshole.

I had a company screw me out of $300, flat out, got nothing for it. You think I tell that to every person who works there? No, it's rude.

[–]jsellout 13 points14 points ago

I'll tell you what's rude! Asking someone a question and then answering it before they get a chance to.

[–]CitrusJunkie 5 points6 points ago

False. You wouldn't be shopping at Best Buy.

[–]KilgoreTrout1 2 points3 points ago

as an employee of lowes i agree with this statement

[–]AutoBiological 2 points3 points ago

I sold/fixed computers for a while. I didn't put up with people who said this to me.

Truth was, most people felt that way, none of the customers ever knew more than me.

The idiots I hear on facebook too. Oh well.

[–]hooizyoo 2 points3 points ago

Please explain to me how this $500 hdmi cable is absolutely worth the extra money over the $10-$15 cable.

[–]fragler 2 points3 points ago

DIAMONDS.

[–]RustyPipes 2 points3 points ago

Hey that's just like me at the liquor store!

[–]ICE417 2 points3 points ago

There are alot of BBY employees defending their jobs. Including me.

This pleases me for some stupid reason.

[–]irrational-numbers 2 points3 points ago

I worked at Best Buy and I think you'd be surprised, but usually you probably do research on what you want before you go in. So, of course you're going to know more on a specific topic.

[–]YummYumms 1 point2 points ago

Whenever I go to Best Buy. Is to look at something before I buy it online for cheaper.

[–]schecterplayer91 2 points3 points ago

They price match pretty much anyone. Not trying to be a dick, just letting you know.

[–]asdfgagf 4 points5 points ago

Really? Every time I've asked about a price match for online retailers (newegg etc), I am always told "We only price match our own website"

[EDIT] if it is true that they pricematch online legitimate retailers, my local Best Buy has ripped me off about 500 dollars :displeased:

[–]ethanwc 5 points6 points ago

...and stores locally.

[–]farorie 2 points3 points ago

No, I work at bb and the only price check I'm aware that we won't do is through Amazon if the product is sold through a third party and not directly from Amazon.. Also, if you complain, they might just price match you to shut you up.

[–]mmansoor 1 point2 points ago

Lowe's / The Home Depot

[–]Doomsdayclock148 -1 points0 points ago

Except Best Buy employees don't greet you...at least not in any Best Buy I've been to..

[–]frsh2fourty 0 points1 point ago

This is how I feel going into any auto parts stores. I don't care if you have an ASE certified mechanic working the counter. This is especially frustrating when the motor you are working on requires cross referencing parts from different cars. Anyone who has gone to an autozone or any similar chain will know why.

[–]bigkoreanhead 0 points1 point ago

i just started watching this show, and coincidentally watched this episode, now I can understand these memes T.T

[–]peachescums 1 point2 points ago

Haha former best buy PC sales associate for 2 years. Redditor for 3 years. Were suppose to treat everyone like they don't know anything (about electronics)by dumbing down verbage. No need to overwhelm the customer. Specially If you're buying your electronics from Best Buy.

[–]TooSwelly 1 point2 points ago

:|

I work at BestBuy.

Again, you may know more than me. But I do know a far amount, about a lot.

[–]controler12 0 points1 point ago

Ugh dont even let them talk to you about their damn warranty plans. I bought my current laptop there, and was putting up with their bullshit just because my rents and brother took the trip with me. I told them i didn't need the warranty plan as i had already found a third party one. Btw Square trade warranty's are great for phones and tablets and are like half the price of best buy plan They jumped right on me about it, and then he choose to bring another employ over to mock my plan and kept trying to force me into buying their warranty. I understand that you guys deal with idiots everyday who might need help, but when a customer clearly says he knows what he is buying and states he clearly doesn't want the warranty, back the fuck off. and most people wonder why i refuse to go to best buy to help them pick out new electronics. /rant

[–]fragler 2 points3 points ago

They are only somewhat to blame. Their DMs/RMs/Corporate offices know that the only way to make money is on those plans.

Fuck corporations.

[–]Oheina 0 points1 point ago

This is how I feel going into other flower shops, craft supply stores, and the cooking stores. Ha.

[–]Cnife 0 points1 point ago

This is how I feel at the version store. The employees try to show me ever single phone and tell me how shiny and expensive they are. If I ask anything technical at all they just stare at me.

[–]mlhwang 1 point2 points ago

I remember a best employee asked if i had any questions about technology...

[–]Lots42 -1 points0 points ago

Wait, Best Buy still exists?

[–]Laeryken 1 point2 points ago

ITT: OP is a prideful asshole.

[–]davendak 0 points1 point ago

This is often true, but not always. I once met a dude who worked at best buy who spoke of linux (specifically the user-friendly ubuntu and red hat distros) two years before I made the leap. I needed a hard drive right away.

And Lowes.. There's a guy in our local store who really knows his stuff, and where even the most hidden stuff is. Whenever I'm working on a project, I bounce ideas off of him, and we always come up with something stellar. He used to be a machinist. One time he helped me to find a digital caliper made entirely of steel for only $10 more than the cheapo plastic one.

[–]Baryn -1 points0 points ago

Holy shit, so true

[–]DeYaHoe -1 points0 points ago

This particular thought always finds me at Guitar Center.

[–]cmd_iii 0 points1 point ago

This is how I felt last night, going to the local hardware store.

In fairness, it was just before closing, and they only had a single cashier in the place. All the skilled people had gone home to dinner by then.

[–]Kosard 0 points1 point ago

This is how I feel going anywhere...

[–]fudgecookie 0 points1 point ago

Does anybody know what T.V show this is from? I have seen a lot of captions like floating about with the same guy and they have all made me laugh.

I may be lacking with comedy, so teach me!

[–]bigglesxyz 0 points1 point ago

As someone who has spent nearly their entire teenage and adult life gaining certifications and degrees specifically for networking, hardware, software and programming - Best Buy is one of the most frustrating stores to walk into when they have only a few people working, and even one of them is pretty lost.

I cringe when I hear a kid say "ummm..." when someone asks them "Well, what does having a faster processor do for me?"

Usually (if my fiancee doesn't yell at me about it) if I hear someone give some horrible advice, I'll try to get their attention in the store and give them the better advice on where to better spend their money.

With that said, not even close to all employees are like that, and usually the more tech-savvy just go in and know exactly what they want or will order online anyway, so I'm sure the average employee helps people more than they don't.

[–]Snowyjoe 0 points1 point ago

You should come to Japan, just grab someone with a name tag and give him your shopping list and he'll bring it all in 5 minutes.

Although they do correct you on your pronunciation.

"Excuse me, do you have any washers?"
"Washer?.... OH! You mean Wo-sya-!"

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Uh.....Lowes.

[–]Koreakat 0 points1 point ago

That's Lowes....

[–]LosLPos 1 point2 points ago

Whats The name of that show

[–]Ericarto24 0 points1 point ago

Thats how i feel ging in to home depo or lowes i hate trying to describe a tool or somthing i need because they never herd of it b4. And most the tiime they are " pro help" people for that section. Smh

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I want to go to one of those and see if I get wrong answers by the employers.

Like in the one comersial where the guy says that the CPU is the most important piece of hardware when it comes to maxing out games.

[–]JackHoob 0 points1 point ago

This is why I chose to never work at Home Depot or Lowes.

[–]FaptainAwesome 0 points1 point ago

Back before CC went under I was explaining differences between laptops to a friend from my battalion and an older man joined in, asking about a couple different models. After he left to talk it over with his wife the high school employees came over. No wonder they closed

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

SWEET CHEEZUS

[–]Congzilla 0 points1 point ago

When I am waiting for my wife to shop in the mall I go stand in the Best Buy PC center and correct the sales associates trying to sell seniors shit they don't understand and don't need.

[–]EsteemedGentleman 0 points1 point ago

"Need help with something?"

"Just looking for stuff to buy on Amazon."

[–]Gay4BillKaulitz 0 points1 point ago

Actually shopping at Best Buy is the first sign of not knowing more than the person who works there.

[–]growlingbear 0 points1 point ago

Yesterday, at our Best Buy, a guy walked in and shot his fiancee in the head.

[–]toolusingmonkeys 0 points1 point ago

Some of the dumbest people I've ever had to interact with were Lowes employees. At least at best buy and the home depot the workers can make eye contact and speak in sentences, even if it is limited to "I don't know where that is, it isn't my department

[–]fartleshart 0 points1 point ago

Heh.. How I feel going to Lowes..

[–]Emil120513 0 points1 point ago

Employees wear Lowe's vests at Best Buy?

[–]Lumennn 0 points1 point ago

If you knew a thing you wouldn't be going to Best Buy. >_>

[–]fartleshart 0 points1 point ago

Heh.. How I feel when I go to Lowes...

[–]whatupnig 0 points1 point ago

If you 'knew' more than him, you wouldn't be going to best buy...
