She's currently only third string right now, probably won't move up the depth chart that much (Size being the biggest factor there, probably. At 5'5" she probably can't see over her o-line all too well).

But good for her. Hopefully she'll manage to get some playing time in games in and get to throw some passes.

[–]IamGrimReefer 266 points267 points ago

she took 2 shotgun snaps and handed off both times during a game. i think it was garbage time though.

in college our QB transferred from Alabama because he was too short to see over their O-line. he was fucking unreal - accurate and could run, but he was just too small to play at that level.

[–]Mattyice318 76 points77 points ago

Russell Wilson?

[–]GOA_AMD65 49 points50 points ago

I saw him play at State. He has something special. Can't wait to see him play Sunday.

[–]TorryHoltsFinger 15 points16 points ago

Pack!

[–]Werke 18 points19 points ago

Is 5'11 much taller then 5'5

[–]SeekretSquirrel 185 points186 points ago

Yes. 6 inches taller. You're welcome.

[–]gigglefarting 68 points69 points ago

That's almost half a foot.

[–]taiwanesekid05 57 points58 points ago

[–]Omnominable 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, but only using limits.

[–]karmacomic 44 points45 points ago

Drew Brees was considered to small to play for Texas.

edit: I meant Texas

[–]nolaman70001 58 points59 points ago

Remember Drew Brees was too short at 6'. 5' 5" is a midget little person in football terms

[–]Final21 47 points48 points ago

He's an exception. He was a great tennis player, even beating Andy Roddick in high school. Tennis has a lot of lateral movement and he's good at it, good at getting outside of the pocket so he can see. He's also scary fucking accurate.

[–]hhunterhh 18 points19 points ago

TIL Drew Bree's kicks ass at tennis

[–]hazie 13 points14 points ago

Drew Bree: his kicks ass at tennis.

[–]Punchee 5 points6 points ago

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 10 points11 points ago

Well he played for Purdue.

[–]karmacomic 7 points8 points ago

I'm aware of this lol. He went there after being denied by UT.

[–]ChronoN7 3 points4 points ago

And then he led Purdue to a Rose Bowl appearance.

[–]MrF33 90 points91 points ago

[–]BlameLasers 45 points46 points ago

Yeah, but Flutie was a freak of nature. If he had been "athlete-sized" he would have gone down as one of the greatest of all time.

[–]midnightsbane04 9 points10 points ago

would have gone down as one of the greatest of all time.

As a football purist, I can assure you he already is considered that. He's given a little edge simply because of his size, but between his BC/CFL/NFL stats many would put him top 50, possibly(arguably) top 30.

Edit: Quarterbacks. I don't want to make it seem like I said all time players as a whole.

[–]listentobillyzane 11 points12 points ago

Doug Flutie is in your top 30 all time quarterbacks??

[–]nmm66 3 points4 points ago

The CFL game was absolutely made for a guy like Flutie. 6 outta 7 years he was the Most Outstanding Player.

[–]holynub 69 points70 points ago

Fucking love Doug Flutie. He's my hero.

[–]BuckeyeBentley 88 points89 points ago

Flutie was still 5'10"...

[–]Fuqwon[!] 59 points60 points ago

Listed at 5'10''...

[–]FuriousJ 72 points73 points ago

I know he was actually like 2'4 and half, call it 2'5'' being generous.

[–]Midicide 13 points14 points ago

2'4 and a calf amirite?

[–]ArkaJonesie 24 points25 points ago

Isn't he the last player to ever drop-kick a field goal in the NFL?

[–]PatriotGrrrl 12 points13 points ago

That depends on whether you count pro bowls and unsuccessful attempts.

Flutie was a guest of honor at last year's Pro Bowl, and Drew Brees dropkicked one for him.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 9 points10 points ago

Flutie was 4-5 inches taller than this woman.

[–]bobalobbillybob 9 points10 points ago

Whars the Flutie-flakes???

[–]Got_Engineers 5 points6 points ago

It just depends, guys like Mike Vick and Drew Brees is only like 6 foot and he certainly does fairly well for himself. It is just learning how to adapt and learn how to do well. Yes it helps to be a tall QB as most NFL QBs are around 6'4 but I know there have also been guys that are like 5'10 or 5'11 as QBs in the NFL.

[–]binaryspartan 6 points7 points ago

"there have also been guys that are like 5'10 or 5'11 as QBs in the NFL"

While this is true, those players had to be incredibly more effective than their taller counterparts who fit the mold of the prototypical quarterback.

Even after Flutie showed how awesome he was he still had to fight that battle his entire career. Of course, ask Wade Philips what the curse feels like. :-p

[–]pilekrig 84 points85 points ago

It's an arm strength thing more than vision thing, her highlights are all 10 yard wobblers. Good for her, but...

[–]DoingTheCockroach 73 points74 points ago

I would also say it's a hand size thing, gotta be able to grip it well to throw it hard

[–]FantasticBastard 60 points61 points ago

And a strength thing and a speed thing.

[–]Sir_Vival 70 points71 points ago

Really, it's a chromosomal thing.

[–]Phil56731 38 points39 points ago

[–]hwachob95 19 points20 points ago

...Err...Not sure sure if I should laugh...

[–]kiljaro 13 points14 points ago

Go ahead. I did.

[–]wastingmine 9 points10 points ago

I can play potato.

[–]droidkc 2 points3 points ago

It's really all about the X's and Y's and the X's.

[–]noPortlandNooo 57 points58 points ago

As a defensive end, I'd hit that.

[–]mokr22 8 points9 points ago

as i dont understand nfl, does a defensive end try to tackle the quarter back?

[–]noPortlandNooo 7 points8 points ago

Yup. The defensive line (AKA the linemen) are made up of defensive ends, and defensive tackles. The defensive ends are typically the best pass rushers on the team. They hit the quarterback the most.

Although I'm just a football fan, not an actual defensive end.

[–]weatherwar 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, you'd sack that real good...

[–]Dyolf_Knip 4 points5 points ago

No doubt she's got quite the tight end.

[–]LacksRethics 88 points89 points ago

Our highschool had a really good female kicker. She set a few records for our region. And she'd make a defensive tackle every once in awhile when special teams failed.

She ended up getting a soccer scholarship for college.

But what I remember most, one year she was Wonder Woman for Halloween. Mmmmmmm

[–]missachlys[!] 13 points14 points ago

Yeah. Female kickers are rare, but exist. Our school had two a few years ago. But a QB is a completely different situation.

[–]Jiffpants 47 points48 points ago

I was a kicker/wide receiver/safety in high school. Tall, scrawny, speedy. I've got a 50yd fg on my bucket list :) hardest thing was shoulder pads and chest plate. Shit never fits! Plus there's nothing more satisfying than demolishing a guy, and taking your helmet off later. They get so pissy lol

[–]IAmAllowedOutside 5 points6 points ago

[–]Kuibata 7 points8 points ago

Hah! I was a receiver/safety in high school too and I know your pain about those chest plates. I never could get it to fit right.

I remember keeping my helmet on the whole game and then walking by the opposing team's bus on the way to the locker rooms with it off. It went from rowdy high school boy yelling to dead silence in two seconds flat, my teammates would just laugh their ass off.

[–]RomneySucksHellCocks 50 points51 points ago

Girl does something typically only men do: "good on her! great job! You rock and are an inspiration to women everywhere!"

Man does something typically only women do: "fucking faggot fuck you go fucking die you freak lets lynch this faggot".

[–]brevityis 58 points59 points ago

And the second attitude is sexism too, against men (yep it exists!), something modern feminism wants to address as well.

People just have to unbend enough to at least say "well hey, that's different, but you go dude!" It's that feminine activities, actions, etc, are perceived as of lower value/status. So when a guy - who already has higher status- does something feminine/lower value, it's weird, uncool, "gay", creepy, etc. Same thing only in reverse why women doing typically masculine things is so celebrated.

We need to work on getting rid of the whole "this is for girls" "that's for boys" notion in the first place.

[–]earthtoandy 2 points3 points ago

Good for her indeed, but the first thing I thought when I saw the picture was 'her hands are too small'

[–]Bsr5088 0 points1 point ago

They will give her a few pitty plays, we did it to my high school's girl punter/kicker.

Not saying girls can't play football, just agreeing with OP commenter here. She's 5'5 and her o-line probably doesn't have a guy under 5'10.

[–]jimtracysmyhomeboy 189 points190 points ago

That running back is going to get so many yards.

[–]Caesar_Epicus 58 points59 points ago

Maurice Jones-Drew syndrome

[–]nerdtaco 133 points134 points ago

My school let a girl on the football team but wouldn't let me on the badminton team because "It was a girls sport." Jerks. I just wanted to play badminton because it's fun as shit.

[–]PigNugent 8 points9 points ago

same thing happened to me but it was because the badminton captain thought a football jock like myself wouldnt take it seriously. bitch, i like sports!

The girl on the football team was a novelty, she only kicked a couple of extra points for JV. she dressed for varsity games so we would be in the newspaper.

[–]nerdtaco 8 points9 points ago

Lol I got called gay by the other dudes because I tried out, but I didn't care. I just like Badminton.

[–]tap112 49 points50 points ago

My school had a girl's bowling team apparently to offset the fact that there was a boy's wrestling team. I guess there needs to be an equal amount of sports teams for both boys and girls, or something like that. I was a pretty decent bowler at that age. I had about a 170 average when I stopped playing. Pretty decent for a high schooler. I never wanted to wrestle. Putting on spandex and rolling around on the floor with another dude never really appealed to me. The bowling team was strictly girls only. The wrestling team always had at least one token female. That's how shit works nowadays. Special exemptions for females when convenient, equality the rest of the time.

[–]SonOfSamJackson 11 points12 points ago

Title 9

[–]nerdtaco 3 points4 points ago

Oh god I would have loved to have had bowling as a high school sport too.

[–]zer0icee 321 points322 points ago

Great Fundamentals

[–]kitatatsumi 187 points188 points ago

Try and keep your tongue behind your teeth when playing contact sports

[–]TheSurgeMeister 98 points99 points ago

Tell that to Michael Jordan.

[–]rmehranfar[!] 15 points16 points ago

Michael Jordan is displaying adventitious motor overflow when he sticks his tongue out like that.

[–]TheSurgeMeister 3 points4 points ago

That was a very interesting read. Also, Happy Cake Day, man!

[–]BigBlackCot 3 points4 points ago

Upvote for strength of reference.

[–]danamos 11 points12 points ago

There must be a correlation between skill and face absurdity level in basketball because I can't ball for shit but man do I look sexy doing it.

[–]vegetablesurprise 28 points29 points ago

[–]punkidd912 92 points93 points ago

If you can really call basketball a contact sport...

[–]fornicationist 45 points46 points ago

Technically it is a contact sport, but I think most people would agree that football is significantly more intense in regards to the physical toll and propensity for serious injury.

[–]tklibe 75 points76 points ago

And therein lies the difference between contact sports like basketball and soccer, and collision sports like football and rugby

[–]grandduketc 43 points44 points ago

And hockey.

[–]BigBlackCot 2 points3 points ago

And hockey.

[–]DeckerR 2 points3 points ago

And hockey.

[–]hooligan99 2 points3 points ago

And lacrosse.

[–]Persdear 7 points8 points ago

I'm convinced that if you cover basketball and soccer players from head to toe with plastic pads and helmets it'll instantly become more violent. There is something about the decreased threat of pain and injury that makes you not give a fuck.

[–]eggylisk 15 points16 points ago

rugby would like a word

[–]Daroo425 7 points8 points ago

you've obviously never played serious basketball. get hit in the face all the time, can easily bite off your tongue.

[–]Dirty0ldMan 5 points6 points ago

Back when he played, there was more contact (and before that, a lot more).

[–]skarface6 2 points3 points ago

It's just practice. RG3 was doing the same thing recently.

[–]akm0921 2 points3 points ago

[–]parkernorwood 51 points52 points ago

That more fun to watch.

[–]MrF33 32 points33 points ago

Oh god you're killing me.

OH GOD! You're KILLING ME!

The spirit is willing, but the flesh is spongy and bruised

[–]argh_minecraft 32 points33 points ago

I have seen lots of girls go here.

[–]Hammer_the_Screw 26 points27 points ago

First movie I'd ever seen boobs in. Unexpected and sort of awkward, but woah were they nice.

[–]ShallowBasketcase 2 points3 points ago

Unexpected boobs are the best kind of boobs.

[–]Creeggsbnl 10 points11 points ago

She never joined the football team in the movie. Just sayin'.

[–]SenorUser 55 points56 points ago

does the coach dare give her the 'good hustle out there' pat on the but after a game ?

[–]NorwegianPearl 16 points17 points ago

I think most coaches are laying low after the whole Sandusky thing.

[–]cmilla 47 points48 points ago

It would be sexist if he didn't wouldn't it? ; /

[–]ShallowBasketcase 36 points37 points ago

sexist if he doesn't, harassment if he does

The only winning move is not to play

[–]friday6700 28 points29 points ago

Great, now none of us get ass-pats because of the girl. Just fucking great!

[–]PlaySwitzerland 66 points67 points ago

This reminds me of an episode of 30 Rock, when Liz Lemon talks about how she was the first female to play on her highschool's football team. It cuts to a clip of a young Liz, lousily punting a football and shouting, "YEAH! FEMINISM!" It's hilarious.

[–]FreeloadingRusty 140 points141 points ago

I bet she throws like a girl (who's good at throwing a football).

[–]batnastard 34 points35 points ago

I graduated high school in 1993. For my junior and senior year, I sat next to a girl who was the goalie on the (otherwise all boys') hockey team.

Now the school has a girls' hockey team. I think both things are cool. Good for the QB above for doing what she wants!

[–]mpmar 30 points31 points ago

Was it Julie Gaffney? Are you from Bangor, Maine?

[–]Brockbfball1563 6 points7 points ago

Juile was pretty good, but Connie was...wow.

[–]alex910 4 points5 points ago

She probably got cut after Goldberg became her dietary consultant.

[–]johnnyfappleseed28 353 points354 points ago

I have to say it, girls won't be able to compete in the same league as men, especially in football. I'm for all that equal rights and shit, I like the 19th amendment, but bottom line is that it's not safe for her to be competing with guys.

Since this is getting a lot of feedback I'd like to add an edit that Ohshititsomar really summed up my point. "Moral of the story is, yes girls you can do everything a man can, but not alongside men. At least not in football."

[–]Ohshititsomar 223 points224 points ago

I was playing fullback for my high school team. We played a team with a girl. Coach decides to put her in at defensive end. We ran a sweep play and I hit the fuck out of her. I felt really bad afterwards because I didn't realize she was "the girl" and she got rocked. I'm pretty sure she was concussed. Moral of the story is, yes girls you can do everything a man can, but not alongside men. At least not in football.

[–]ASquishyJollyRancher 154 points155 points ago

You shouldn't have felt bad. I'm all for girls having an equal opportunity but going easy on them helps no one. I played all 4 years and would hit anyone on the field as hard was appropriate, girl or boy.

[–]Ohshititsomar 68 points69 points ago

Yeah I know I shouldn't feel bad. But I distinctly remember standing over her after the play was over, and I realized she was just a really overweight girl, not like some giant samoan dude, which is what I assumed. She had this pained, quizzical look on her face like she didn't know where she was at, or that she had made a big mistake. Idk, it just made me feel bad. I don't really think she knew what she was getting into.

[–]ynglv 98 points99 points ago

Then you saved her a few more years of heartache by rocking her shit and making her realize she is not cut out for football.

[–]kojak2091 6 points7 points ago

Probably the nicest statement to ever involve the phrase, "rocking her shit."

[–]nikitakhrushchev 13 points14 points ago

To be fair, a very similar situation helped me realize that I too had made a mistake, and that playing football was not for me.

[–]Ohshititsomar 13 points14 points ago

i was not aware american football was popular in the motherland, Mr. Krushchev.

[–]nikitakhrushchev 6 points7 points ago

I have.... a lot of free time these days.

[–]phormality 15 points16 points ago

If she can't deal with it she shouldn't be on the field. That hit allowed her to assess what she was actually doing. Most girls don't have a good concept of how hard a guy can hit.

[–]derpoftheirish 35 points36 points ago

Don't feel bad. She chose to step onto that field. Same way I felt the few times I or one of my teammates had to wrestle a girl. If you want to step out onto the same playing field, you get the same treatment. Would you not have tried to hit a similar sized male player just as hard?

[–]Throwaway_bicycling 28 points29 points ago

Once upon a time in the 1970s when I was playing fullback on our JV high school soccer team, the opposing side included a young woman with really good ball-handling skills plying striker. For reasons I could not understand, the rest of the defenders were playing really gingerly around her, and we were paying the price in the form of relentless offensive pressure against us (since they essentially had a free and open player with skills). But after a few minutes she ended up charging down the field on my side, apparently expecting to run right by me to my left and shoot on goal. Sliding tackle time! I made a clean move for the ball and got it, but momentum being what it is, she got sent flying over me in spectacular fashion. The ref ran right up and tried to call "it", whatever "it" was but my opponent got right in his face and shouted "that was totally legal, ref!" And we got a really awkward and belated "Play on?" And as we were running back down the field towards the play, she half turned to me and said "that won't work next time." And it didn't, but then again my team mates snapped out of it and stopped backing off. A good game, but we did end up losing...again. I think she got one assist.

Again, this was the 1970s, and there was only "boys" soccer, so if you wanted to play soccer, there was only one way to do it. And that's still true even now when we have men's and women's teams.

[–]giants3b 5 points6 points ago

It's even more insulting if you go easy. I'm sure they want to be treated as regular players.

[–]ZeroMomentum 23 points24 points ago

Shit, I am an Asian guy...I wouldn't play football!!!

My glasses would get crushed!!!

Jokes aside, the size and weight difference is just too much between the genders. I am sure she is very skilled, but you are right, one single hit by a guy running full speed would probably cause head injury.

Heck, not just girls, guys get head injuries too.

[–]LL_KooL_Aid 25 points26 points ago

TIL women and Asians are equally disadvantaged at football

[–]teamstepdad 4 points5 points ago

I did something similar except it was high school hockey and the girl was a guy with one arm. I was really stoked about hitting him really hard until I noticed he was rockin one limb.

[–]SlugJunior 4 points5 points ago

I know exactly how you feel. I've played against 2 girls in my sports career. The first I played lacrosse against in 8th grade, and absolutely destroyed her on the field. I beat the shit out of her and knocked her down more then a few times, and didn't realize till after that she was a girl. I felt awful, and her teammates gave me the worst looks. And the other time I was playing football, and they had a girl on kick return. She tried to block one of the meatheads on our high school team, and got destroyed. She had to sit out the rest of the game. Girls need to understand there is a significant difference between male and female athletes, and while I'm all for equality, I don't want them getting hurt. I wouldn't want a girl on my team for the same reason I wouldn't want an 8th grader playing in high school. They can't handle bigger, stronger, more violent people safely

[–]johnnyfappleseed28 2 points3 points ago

I think your last 2 sentences summed up my point well, thank you.

[–]LeSouthAfricanSpy 2 points3 points ago

Those are the worst kinds of hits that I face as an end; when I'm reading the play and trying to get to where I need to be and I get smacked by the fullback or guard.

[–]jewunit 33 points34 points ago

I agree with you for the most part, but usually when the conversation comes up people ignore the idea that there is always the potential for an outlier. The idea isn't to have girls and guys playing football together, but it is possible for A girl to play with guys. It's not safe for the average human to be competing with guys playing football, and while it's more likely that a girl won't be able to compete, it's not impossible.

[–]pi_over_3 5 points6 points ago

Except in sports all the athletes are outliers. It's 99th percentile girl going up against 99th percentile men.

[–]TidalPotential 4 points5 points ago

Right. They can do highschool or college level, rarely. But once you hit the majors, it's gonna stop.

[–]chodestevens 9 points10 points ago

I honestly think it is pretty much impossible. There hasn't been a sport I can think off of the top of my head, especially in contact sports, where a girl has been competitive with men. It's not to offend them at all but it is impossible to ignore the biological limitations of their body.

[–]jewunit 7 points8 points ago

Yes I agree with that, it hasn't happened and I think the likelihood of it happening isn't very high, but when people speak about it in definites that's what makes it impossible. The problem is you take a generalized idea (biological differences) and then apply it to every specific individual. There is always the possibility of an anomaly.

[–]rooke2021 44 points45 points ago

I agree my senior year we played a team and beat them 45-0 and towards the end we put in the only girl we had on the team, we ran a reverse that did not trick the defense at all and she got hit pretty hard, she came back to the sidelines crying.

[–]El_Fader 27 points28 points ago

I feel that it's dependent on player position. It's pretty safe to say that we won't see any female middle linebackers anytime soon.

http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=19971019&slug=2567112

It was a cool moment. Even Linfield players were congratulating her.

[–]Tree-eeeze 22 points23 points ago

How about a female offensive linemen then? 300+lbs and strong as hell to boot

Edit: Wasn't trying to imply she could play at a collegiate level. Was just bringing her up because the guy asked about middle line backers and the current discussion is around a female high school quarterback

[–]scoutu 65 points66 points ago

In a head-on collision accident in 2007 that demolished her truck, she escaped serious injury by "pushing the steering wheel away from her body as the crash occurred, leaving the steering wheel broken and crumpled."

MOTHER OF GOD.

[–]Eric52902 22 points23 points ago

I think this is proof that she is a terminator and clearly not woman.

[–]Thewhitebread 12 points13 points ago

She stands 5-foot-8

This immediately precludes her from being an upper level collegiate lineman. Also quick lateral movement and flexibility while being 300+ lbs and very strong is essential. Typically speaking most "pure" powerlifters don't make particularly awesome linemen (not that their mutually exclusive, it's just at higher levels their different forms of athleticism).

It's still very impressive though. But comparing male and female athleticism simply isn't fair, and personally I don't understand the somewhat recent trend of trying to make them equal.

All of that said she could beat the everliving fuck out of me, sweet Jesus.

[–]klngarthur 34 points35 points ago

She is definitely strong, but she isn't that strong compared to men of similar size. She is an olympic class weight lifter, but her all time best in the combined snatch/clean-and-jerk would have placed last in this year's men's olympics at her weight class by 30+ kilos. That result is only helped by the extremely poor showing of one weight lifter, otherwise it would be 100+ kilos. Even if you paired her with men from the lowest weight class who are barely over one third her weight, she would still have trouble finishing better than 10th.

I'd love to see a female athlete succeed in a men's sport, but it's just not going to happen in a sport that requires raw physical strength like football. I think it's far more likely to happen, although i think the likelihood is still extremely low, in a sport like ice hockey (goaltender) or basketball (point guard) where quickness can occassionally trump strength and size.

[–]Thewhitebread 13 points14 points ago

I don't know enough about hockey to know the differences between male and female goaltenders, but I do know that in basketball even the level of speed and quickness is immense. Generally speaking a very good male high school basketball player (even say point guard, and at an All-American level) would dominate the best WNBA counterpart.

I think coordination is the great equalizer between men and women's sports. In anything that incorporates a heavy amount of pure size, strength, speed, or quickness men are simply going to have an immense advantage. However a sport that relies more so on skill and coordination can help even the playing field, as women are equally as apt as men in this respect.

[–]FireBloom 0 points1 point ago

As a female, I actually disagree with wanting to see women compete in men's sports. I mean of they can do it then go for it. But I am more Bothered by the lack of respect( maybe not the right word?) that women's sports get.

Either way, seeing a person of any gender achieve amazing levels of Athletisism is inspirational.

[–]El_Fader 2 points3 points ago

Cool! I would pay money to see her play.

[–]FireBloom 4 points5 points ago

Definitely not the same, but I was a female linebacker in little league. Seriously had so much fun playing football that one year than all my cheerleading years combined.

But I knew once I got older I wouldn't be able to play along side men. So off to weight lifting and softball I went.

[–]lurgi 17 points18 points ago

Even in the right position it's going to be a stretch. Female kickers won't be able to kick the ball as far, for example. Up close she might be just as good, but they are still going to be limited and football teams would rather recruit a guy without those limitations (and there are lots) rather than someone with them (unless it's a publicity stunt).

[–]olliberallawyer 18 points19 points ago

Is a female kicker going to be NFL? Hell no. Could a female kicker (not a punter) be college player? I am quite sure of it. Colleges routinely have a "power kicker" for kickoffs and that rare time when it is 4th and 30, with 10 seconds left, and they are going to try a 50 yard kick and a FG kicker.

Otherwise, college football coaches are so conservative, even 40 yard kicks are routinely scrapped for offense. Male or female, if you can kick a ball through the uprights nearly every single time, in game situations, from 45 yards, you have a chance.

This is also why I feel kickers routinely get the shit end of the stick from coaches. All game they punt (and they don't coffin-corner it) when a FG was within reach, special teams biffs it and the yardage gain is 20 yards. Again and again. Then, all of the sudden, we slap them on the ass with the final play of the game, with players who don't respect them since you don't let them do this at any other time, and say "go ahead, son, make it!" As Adam Sandler said, the lonesome kicker...

[–]skarface6 11 points12 points ago

Male or female, if you can kick a ball through the uprights nearly every single time, in game situations, from 45 yards, you have a chance.

Except that you have to be able to tackle at the higher levels in case something goes wrong (IIRC).

[–]Cronus6 1 point2 points ago

Sadly, I agree with you... to a point.

I played ball in HS, and even then (as seen by other comments below, they agree) it's a rough game for both males AND females without the correct body type.

But to say "girls won't be able to compete in the same league as men..." doesn't fly for me.

I can see them playing punter or place kicker easily. And if that happens who knows. (I've seen some scary chicks out there.) **If they can pull their weight and do their assignments better than available males, I say let them play.

[–]Appiedash 10 points11 points ago

Exactly. Just like men can be at a disadvantage in some sports, women can be too.

[–]grumpyseal 147 points148 points ago

Until she gets hit and bites her tongue off.

[–]superdude4agze 44 points45 points ago

Was thinking the same thing. She's got skills obviously, but one hard hit during a throw and she'll regret that. Although I'd wager that she likely wears a mouthguard during actual play and the tongue thing is a little harder to do then.

[–]batnastard 162 points163 points ago

she likely wears a mouthguard during actual play

Hopefully a helmet, too.

[–]superdude4agze 113 points114 points ago

Which is obvious to all but the most simple here.

[–]BenjaminSkanklin 3 points4 points ago

I'll admit that I didn't realize that right away, but I didn't think the tongue thing was a big deal either.

I was/am a bowler, that shit doesn't really matter.

[–]ChurchillDownz 24 points25 points ago

How is it obvious she has skills from that picture?

[–]twogap 20 points21 points ago

I LOVED Little Giants!

[–]Alexanderh86 19 points20 points ago

You might wanna google Shawna Waldron (Icebox) nudes then...

[–]Toshiro_Mifune 4 points5 points ago

Wow... she grew up.

[–]fotoman 6 points7 points ago

My sister was the first girl in Texas to play Jr High football. Started both years. This was back in 1987...

[–]LampLovesMe 24 points25 points ago

She looks like a small Clay Matthews.

[–]BigSHug825 15 points16 points ago

She isn't the first. There was some girl named Liz who played on a high school team in White Haven, PA.

[–]literallyagooch 27 points28 points ago

Probably a better passer than Tebow.

[–]maruraba 43 points44 points ago

I'd hit that...

...and force a punt.

[–]GoodGriefBrown 11 points12 points ago

What is the difference between a small girl getting hit by a giant football player and a small guy getting hit by a giant football player? There's lots of size disparity in high school football and I don't see why her size and girl-status should make a difference, other than the very legitimate problem of someone (anyone) short seeing over the offensive line.

[–]ElPotatoDiablo 12 points13 points ago

I see that Doug Gatewood is involved in this and I am not surprised. That is a guy who always rewards heart, skill and talent and never cared about what "faults" you might have. Didn't care if you were too short, too skinny, too fat, or have a vagina as long as you were willing to put in your best effort he was willing to put in his to help you get better. Really really good coach.

Though it does seem as if he's packed on some significant pounds since 1997.

[–]onlyunless 7 points8 points ago

She actually plays for my old high school. Here's an article about her. I've never met her, but I think it's great that she has this opportunity.

[–]TeamFluff 9 points10 points ago

I think this is pretty awesome. I wonder about how this affects the dynamics of both her team and the opposing team. I would guess this would have similar issues as women in active combat situations.

For example, I could see the O-Line having the subconscious need to protect her better. I could also see any random player on her team getting overly aggressive after she gets hit hard by the opposing team. On the other side of the ball, I could see the opposing team coming after her harder because she's a girl. I could also see members of the opposing team being unwilling to hit a girl; I wouldn't be surprised to see coaches on the opposing team objecting due to this.

[–]im_chef_goldblum 29 points30 points ago

Girls can definitely play. I played defensive line in high school, and we played against a team that had a girl at guard. I was shooting a gap and this chick just fucking flattened me from my front right. One of the harder hits I ever received, male or female. Needless to say, I never heard the end of it. Don't care though, it was a good hit.

[–]frosttenchi 5 points6 points ago

My cousin is a linebacker, I find that more impressive. But good for DiMeglio anyway.

One of the other highschools had a female quarter back second string (James Madison Memorial High, Madison, WI) while i was in school. (02-05)she was terrible and never played. got a bunch of ppl to come out for the games tho.

[–]andrewsmith1986 42 points43 points ago

My older sister had a good friend that was the quarterback for acadiana high in like 1999.

She was actually pretty good.

This thread is going to devolve in a bad way.

[–]Pat_Minotaur 14 points15 points ago

When I was in high school we had a female quarterback. She was pretty good from what I recall. My school had around 900 students and she even started a handful of games at QB. Just looked her up and she now plays in the Women's Football Alliance (that exists) where she won league MVP.

I played basketball against her a few times and she's pretty damn good at that, too.

[–]catmoon 10 points11 points ago

I've always wondered how people justify the things they write online. Since they are anonymous here, is this their true personality? or is this just what they write on the internet as an outlet? I've always wanted to meet one of them in person and compare their internet personas to their real-life ones.

Since many of my friends and family know my Reddit username I more or less write things that I wouldn't be ashamed to say in public.

[–]Russik 7 points8 points ago

As I mentioned in the news thread about her a few days ago, we used to play football together in Elementary school. She was a powerful girl and could take me down easily. This one time we tackled the same kid; the little 3rd grader (We were in 5th grade) did a mid-air 180 degree turn, since we tackled him from different sides. When we both got up, the look of badassery was shared upon each-other.

[–]Gillman_Chatsworth 4 points5 points ago

Boys and girls have the same muscle mass up to age 12 or 13. You were playing at an even level.

[–]15herzh 14 points15 points ago

Im sorry, but she's gonna get her shit rocked after getting hit by a 6 something 200 something highschool linebacker.

[–]markca 8 points9 points ago

....and I wonder what will happen when she gets tackled.

[–]AWildSketchAppeared 55 points56 points ago

[–]MichiganMan12 91 points92 points ago

reminds me of this

[–]ButterMyBiscuit 23 points24 points ago

I get you were going for smudges, but she looks like a burn victim.

[–]throw-away-jo 11 points12 points ago

Call me Icebox

[–]MrBae 4 points5 points ago

Ice box is all grown up..

[–]JupitersClock 4 points5 points ago

She looks as if she has sizeable hands to be a QB. Height and arm strength however would be the biggest knock against her. Pretty awesome to see a woman play football.

[–]HighGuy92 7 points8 points ago

I don't understand how this is allowed. The whole purpose of Title 9 was for there to be an equal number of sports and opportunities for girls as for guys, but you don't see guys being allowed to play volleyball (most high schools don't have a guys volleyball team).

[–]cupcakewin 3 points4 points ago

Maybe its just not popular. Pretty much every single high school in Ontario has a boys volleyball team. If your school doesn't have a boys/girls team you can write to the sports association to play.

[–]your_girlfriend_says 2 points3 points ago

Really? My state had men's volleyball, complete with big ole state tournament. I had no idea. What a bummer, there's nothing like cheering on men's volleyball.

[–]bigrob1 0 points1 point ago

I agree that if there is enough interest in having a girls team for something then make it happen, but I have heard horror stories about boys teams getting shut down, and manufacturing of girls teams that noone is interested in just to meet title 9 requirements

[–]fastshift 5 points6 points ago

Is it just me or does her right arm look significantly thicker than her left arm?

[–]Ham_I_right 10 points11 points ago

so THAT is her secret, she has the right arm of a teenage boy with an internet connection. dammit!

[–]michaeljane 4 points5 points ago

She plays for a high school 10 minutes from my house. I've seen her play and she's damn good

[–]AFuckingShark 5 points6 points ago

...honestly the third string QB is damn good huh

[–]CoyoteStark 0 points1 point ago

"Sports related pun/sexual innuendo"

[–]dcb720 2 points3 points ago

My wife played a year of high school football. She wasn't very good, she says, but she also wasn't the worst player.

Picture girl with long red hair and purple glitter makeup, and when she sweats it smells like apples.

Too bad I never got to see her play.

[–]CatastrophicDude 0 points1 point ago

That's a funny looking apron!?

[–]renegade_forks_ 2 points3 points ago

I bet she can take a pounding. If you know what I mean.

[–]anotherlibertarian 14 points15 points ago

Girls can play, too

Yes, In a position where the whole point is to avoid physical contact and they are protected by everyone else on the team.

[–]saltnvinegar 8 points9 points ago

I'd like to see girls in football become more accepted...Back in Jr High I used to play with the guys across the street every day, and their dad (the assistant coach) asked me constantly to join the team because I could throw, catch, tackle, and get tackled just as well as the guys could. Unfortunately, my dad wouldn't even consider it, even after the coach offered to pay for gear and drive me to the games with his sons himself. These days, however, it seems parents aren't even letting BOYS play football because they're afraid of injuries.....

[–]ASquishyJollyRancher 18 points19 points ago

Boys and girls are pretty much the same size in jr high. We had guys who were 6foot and 200 pounds of solid muscle running 4.8 40s in 9th grade. You'd have been pulverized after puberty kicked in.

[–]saltnvinegar 0 points1 point ago

Oh, I'm definitely aware of that. I didn't want to play in high school. The same guys were crushed by most teams in the area in high school, anyway. In Jr High however, since girls normally grow a year or 2 sooner than guys, I was bigger than or the same size as all of them except for the overweight kid x) He knocked my ass down good.

[–]emmystar9910 4 points5 points ago

I live down the street from South Plantation. I went to go see a game and she was put it, but only for 2 plays. I think its a pretty awesome moment for women in sports.
