      Not knowing anything about chemistry, those two diagrams seem to be very similar. Unless I'm missing something, there seem to be the same number of black, red, and white ball shapes, all with the same single-and double bars between them.       Someone should seriously make a novelty account that answers this. Every single thread that mentions cis always has at least person looking for a definition. Not that this is your fault or anything, it's a retarded word that no one uses in real life. Here's my copypasta definition:

      Opposite of trans. For lack of a better term, it means normal. Do you have a dick and think you're a dude? You're cis.

      Trans people use the word cis to help label certain groups of people, which is fine I guess. Then they turn right around and say that cis people are scum, deserve to die, are oppressing trans people just by existing, and have large amounts of unchecked "privilege".

      This is the first definition of "cis" that I have even come close to understanding. Trans people are so fucking touchy. How can the word "normal" be offensive?

      Let's say trans people make up 1% of the population for argument's sake, although I'm pretty sure it's less. Picture a group of 100 dudes. All of them are in dudes' clothes except for this one guy in a dress. Would you say, from looking at that group of people, that men wearing dresses is normal? No way. If you were asked to pick out the abnormal one in that picture you'd choose the dude in the dress every time.

      On the same token, abnormal doesn't necessarily mean "wrong" or "bad" it's just not the norm.

        I intuitively want to agree with you, but who are we to say how butthurt someone should be having never experienced it ourselves. For instance, when someone's mother dies, unless your mother has also died, you never claim to know how they feel. Most people would see that as disrespectful. While perhaps not as significant as the death of your mother, being constantly reminded of your differentness (in a pejorative sense) is something that probably is a big deal to most people and it seems we should probably approach assuming their appropriate level of butthurtness with caution out of respect.

        One needs a prefix because it's a really rare exception to the norm. The other so much more common that it's fair to assume you're talking about it unless stated otherwise and therefore needs no prefix.

        That's contextual though. If you were to get 99 dudes it dresses and one dude in jeans and a t-shirt in a room, most people would say that the one in jeans and a t-shirt is abnormal. Context is everything. Your example would be better suited to a 50/50 split, 50 dudes in jeans and t-shirts, 50 dudes in dresses.

        Nah, because a 50/50 split isn't representative of the population. In my example each person represents 1% of the male population in the real world and how they identify, gender-wise. The 99 guys wearing dudes' clothes represent the 99% of men who identify as men, the one guy in the dress represents a trans person who identifies as a woman.

          You're describing two completely different groups of people here.

          The majority of trans people don't use the word at all, or use it as a descriptive term (such as defining the difference between a cis woman and a trans woman). It's only the loud, angry, vocal minority that decided to make it into a derogatory term.

                It always bugged me when people talked about being "straight edge". It's strange to me that there's a label for not drinking or doing drugs.                 The worst is when people start feeling elitist because they're "straight edge". I'm in college now and have never been a drinker/smoker/casual drug user, but I always kept my mouth shut and let my friends do their own stuff, but there were some kids in my high school who would just hang out and talk about how being straight edge made them better than everyone else.
