A muslim friend, btw, this wasn't posted entirely as a joke...

[–]Mekongcola 3 points4 points ago

The difference is; the girl in the bikini made the conscious choice to wear that. Where the Muslim woman has no choice...

You have a point, but its worth pointing out that the male gaze puts certain pressures on how she ought to look and how she ought to present herself. I don't think the comic is trying to say that both women are subject to the same kind of male domination, but more to say that just because women aren't wearing burkas doesn't mean they are free from masculine influences.

I see what you're getting at, if you knew the dude who posted this you wouldn't cut him slack, he defends sharia on the reg, saying its "misunderstood." The woman in the bikini may be influenced to wear that, the woman in the laundry bag is FORCED at threat of physical punishment

i understand the distinction and i happen to agree. all im saying is i interpreted it a certain way and i think it makes an interesting point about the ways that our 'liberated' culture has some shortfalls worth addressing.

exactly what I will write if I put anything down

[–]WhiteyDude 1 point2 points ago

Exactly. If women here were culturally indoctrinated to wear a bikini everywhere they went, all the time, then you could complain about a male dominated culture. (However, as a male, I wouldn't complain at all).

and if I beat my wife for not wearing a bikini like the psychopaths in Iran do for not wearing the laundry bag. The people on here trying to defend the cartoon which parallels the way women are treated in america and iran are an insult to humanity.

Boobs equal nothing.

Muslims would cover their eyes too, but they got too tired of leading them around to keep them from bumping into shit.

I've seen young women beaten by Islamic religious police for showing a few stray hairs. Get back to me about how sexist Western culture is when we start physically abusing women for what they wear.

So I can punch people in the face and they shouldn't get mad because, after all, sometimes people get shot for no reason.

i'm not sure which is worse, frankly: a society in which feminine sexuality is seen as a threat to male dominance, and so must be completely censored from all public life, or a male-dominated society in which feminine sexuality conforms to the expectations of men (e.g., "the male gaze.")

neither scenario is great. women in western countries at least have more civil rights, but we've got "toddlers and tiaras" here. from my point of view, both situations are fairly sickening.

this cartoon, however, seems to be pro-woman, not anti-western.

[–]spatchattack[S] 0 points1 point ago

The woman in the bikini may be influenced to wear that, but the woman in the laundry bag is FORCED at threat of physical punishment to wear it. EDIT- also, one causes a heat stroke, one doesn't

[–]mercurialohearn 0 points1 point ago

your understanding of the concept of "force" is somewhat limited. we don't force women by law to expose increasingly more of their bodies, generation after generation, but they are compelled to do so, by the standards of female sexuality which are largely the result of masculine desires.

do we beat women for refusing to wear bikinis? no. do we call them "prudes" or "frigid bitches" when they complain about how they're being sexualized? do we use the media to reinforce negative stereotypes of such women, thus pushing them to conform to what we, as men, desire to see most?

oh, yes we do.

one causes a heat stroke, one doesn't

yes, and the other causes skin cancer. your argument seems to be "we might degrade women and treat them like sluts, but at least we don't beat them." not exactly a winner for equality, wouldn't you say?

[–]spatchattack[S] 0 points1 point ago

ask any woman who has been beaten for not wearing if laundry bag if they would rather be called a prude, frigid bitch or be beaten again. Why do you insist on giving these barbarians undue respect? You insult the beaten women of the middle east if you cant separate these 2 scenarios. And the woman in the bikini can wear sunblock. Science.

[–]mercurialohearn 0 points1 point ago

i'm not giving respect (due or undue) to anyone. as i said, both are sickening. i have this thing i do, called thinking, and it allows me to not automatically take one side on an issue where both sides are deplorable.

but i understand. you want to stick with the "we may treat our women like shit, but we don't treat them as much like shit as you ragheads treat your women" defense.

that's cool, man.

[–]spatchattack[S] 0 points1 point ago

the two are not even comparable, and you are STILL missing the point. Any woman in the states could wear jeans and a t-shirt instead of a bikini, the CHOICE is HERS. NO woman in Iran can wear that or they would be physically beaten.

If I check out women, I mean STARE at them like a total creeper, does a legitimate rapist have any grounds to criticize me? No. Even if you say we objectify our women, this propaganda cartoon draws a parallel to how women are treated in America and Iran, and that is an insult to humanity.
