Well, naturally Weeds would be the choice for a mom. It's sort of the polished, sitcom version of a Breaking Bad. There aren't consequences or real danger. It's just the fantasy exploits of a suburban widow, making lots of money and banging a few strangers along the way.

I was a huge Weeds fan, even after most abandoned it (Although starting when they moved to NY I switched to "WTF am I watching mode", as of this season I'm now several episodes behind) but when I got my hands on Breaking Bad it became meaningless. Breaking Bad has consequences, and weight to characters' actions. There's a genuine feeling of uneasiness in the more tense moments because of everything that's at stake. In Weeds, it's just "Oh, this is a pickle. Wonder who she'll marry to get out of it."

Weeds is grade school tee-ball, Breaking Bad is the New York Yankees.

Weeds is off-brand, tepid generic cola, Breaking Bad is Classic Coke.

Weeds is Miracle Whip, Breaking Bad is mayonaise.

Weeds is Shark Tale, Breaking Bad is Finding Nemo.

Weeds is Owl City, Breaking Bad is The Postal Service.

Weeds is Family Guy, Breaking Bad is golden age Simpsons.

Weeds is Verne Troyer, Breaking Bad is Peter Dinklage.

Weeds is Raisin Bran, Breaking Bad is Raisin Bran Crunch.

Weeds is the center slice in a square cheese pizza. Wait, that sounds delicious. Breaking Bad is the center slice in a square cheese pizza. Weeds is Jim Belushi.

....I love you.

[–]BlowfishinThisUp 6 points7 points ago

That guy's really taking a pounding in this conversation.

[–]PdubsNWO 17 points18 points ago

'Breaking Bad is Rasin Bran Crunch'

I give you all of my internets, and Im sure Walt Jr would do the same.

[–]noobitSomething scientific 2 points3 points ago

All of them except the one that SaveWalterWhite.com is hosted on.

[–]xRemedyIf you've gone crazy, that's something I need to know about... 1 point2 points ago

I really should've expected this to exist since Saul's does too but I was still surprised.

He likes to cook because of chemistry

I see what you did there Flynn.

Bran Crunchston.

[–]Michelin_ManThe Danger[S] 7 points8 points ago

Wow, that was an absolutely perfect comparison. Kudos and upvotes to you.

Weeds is a grande decaf, non-fat iced latte. Breaking Bad is two fingers of Whistlepig rye, neat.

[–]darkrabbit71399.1% pure 2 points3 points ago

Weeds is Mike's Hard Lemonade at room temperature. Breaking Bad is 190-proof Everclear chilled amongst the frosty snows of Mt. Everest.

[–]MaxIsAlwaysRight 6 points7 points ago

I don't think that metaphor works as well as you intended. I, for one, don't particularly enjoy committing suicide by drinking pure denatured alcohol.

A better comparison for Breaking Bad in your example would have been:

"Weeds is room temperature Mike's Hard Lemonade, Breaking Bad is Angry Orchard Summer Cider chilled in the frosty snows of Everest."

(EDIT: Clarity)

[–]darkrabbit71399.1% pure 1 point2 points ago

Uhh... scrambles for better example

Weeds is Burger King. Breaking Bad is In-N-Out.

[–]IAMA_JOHN_TRAVOLTA 0 points1 point ago

Yea, my mistake. The Beggar's IS gone, but still didn't fucking understand.

[–]_Indeed"Robbing a train." 2 points3 points ago

Weeds is a hand job, Breaking Bad is a blow job.

[–]eifersucht12aSmells like cat piss 1 point2 points ago

"[Weeds] is the hand job of [drug themed tv shows]. It's nice, but.. You know what I want."

-Donald Glover (Was originally talking about a cereal but I forget which. Life or something bland like that.)

[–]ApsleyHouse 2 points3 points ago

[–]HeronSunFamilia Es Todo 2 points3 points ago

Weeds is Tim Burton, Breaking Bad is Christopher Nolan.

[–]doingitaverage 2 points3 points ago

Weeds is grass. BrBa is crystal.

[–]WillBlaze 0 points1 point ago

Wouldn't Family Guy fit Breaking Bad better? Simpsons is more light-hearted and Family Guy has some dark moments. The Peter Jr. joke was pretty dark, never heard anything even remotely as bad on the Simpsons.

[–]dwarfwarrior 0 points1 point ago

Family guy sucks

[–]LowPEZhas the Talking Pillow now 1 point2 points ago

Weeds is veggie bacon, Breaking Bad is glorious crispy bacon.

[–]LittleK1dLover 0 points1 point ago

Weeds is the one who answers, Breaking Bad is the one who knocks

[–]LionRyan1 58 points59 points ago

I love Breaking Bad in of all its genius but... you come at the king, you best not miss.

[–]Clou42 7 points8 points ago

I can see much discussion which show will claim "best tv series ever" after BB is completed. Probably depends on the ending.

[–]LionRyan1 18 points19 points ago

Indeed. When I first started watching I would call you nuts, but the further you get into Breaking Bad the more you realize how brilliant it actually is... enough to even rival (In my opinion) the unquestioned best show of all time.

[–]mix0 6 points7 points ago

The Wire doesn't really follow a storyline like Breaking Bad does, it's more about character development and depth, and in that category they do it perfectly for the vast amount of characters they incorporate throughout the seasons.

[–]PdubsNWO 14 points15 points ago

I would argue The Wire has more of a storyline than BB, and that BB is more about character development. I feel like BB is really about watching Walt unravel, and watching Jesse unravel while he trys to move in the opposite direction of that.

The Wire has one continuous story line even though there are a lot more characters, but since a lot of characters are killed off, move, go into hiding, jail, etc, I feel that you get to see more of a story because the storyline starts to penetrate so many different organizations. If someone is killed off in BB it is usually a huge deal, and I feel that a lot more time in BB is spent on character development.

TL;DR the Wire follows a storyline just like BB does if not a more intricate one, there are just more characters so it is a more spread out story instead of focusing on the plight of one man/group.

[–]LionRyan1 4 points5 points ago

The main character in the The Wire is the city of Baltimore. I must say, that character is developed quite well ;)

I totally see what you're saying though, and you are correct. The depth and development of Walt's character is unseen in any singular character in The Wire (with the exception of the system as a whole)

You are also correct in saying The Wire probably has a more complex plot/storyline than Breaking Bad. I would take it a step further and say they're not even close. If BB was nearly as complex as The Wire it wouldn't have the same massive, widespread appeal. That is the main reason why The Wire never gained a widespread audience, despite its utter genius. It is extremely difficult to understand and the common viewer doesn't have the patience/intelligence/attention span to keep up.

Two-and-a-Half Men?!

[–]A2AegisCounting the Days 1 point2 points ago

Game of Thrones.

[–]HeronSunFamilia Es Todo 0 points1 point ago

I dunno. Don't get me wrong, I love Game of Thrones. Absolute blast so far. But GRRM takes a looooooooooong time making his novels, and I think the show will catch up too quickly, forcing them to either needlessly extend events or create a prequel-series. I'm more inclined to think the latter, but if the former happens, the show will turn dull pretty quick.

it doesn't have to, it now has a large fanbase who follows it dogmatically.

[–]Togaz 20 points21 points ago

I constantly ask myself why I'm still watching Weeds when I know full well it's not going to redeem itself in its tragically inept final season. In the last episode of Breaking Bad Walt provided a succinct explanation:

Inertia.

Everytime just as I think meh Nancy is some old chick. Then BAM they show her in some skimpy clothes and it's like she's not that bad. I think the scene with KIKU and Silas or the one with Shane and his GF in the Ferrari where better. Since you follow it maybe you can answer a question for me. I don't recall Kiku from last season but when Nancy woke up from her wound she already knew who Kiku was. So when was she first introduced? The girl that duped them last season was a different one was Kiku part of that circle?

[–]philkensebben18-1No more half measures. 5 points6 points ago

There are very few women who look as good at 48 as Mary Louise Parker does.

[–]poohter 1 point2 points ago

What, 48!? I was thinking 36-38, at the very most. Shit, yo.

[–]thegreatwhitemenaceI used to love to go camping 4 points5 points ago

MILFS MILFS MILFS

[–]furbiesandbeans 0 points1 point ago

Kiku is the same girl that gave Silas the hot weed escorts. Nancy used to use her for the models.

[–]shitniggachill 0 points1 point ago

Ahh thanks I remember now. I kept thinking she had something to do with it but couldn't quite put my finger on it

[–]Togaz 1 point2 points ago

I'm gay as shit, and seeing as this season has featured Silas naked in 0% of his scenes... I don't even have that one small "at least."

Though, you may have hit the nail on the head as to what I keep watching for.

[–]ape_cage 9 points10 points ago

To be fair, Weeds was watchable for at LEAST two seasons.

[–]KommunistKatShit Happens 3 points4 points ago

That's high praise right there.

[–]SixBiscuit 23 points24 points ago

Weeds fell into the trap that Breaking Bad skillfully avoided. In BB they acknowledge that WW is a terrible person doing terrible things. In Weeds you get the impression that the writers still think people are rooting for her.

[–]Chipotlaway97 14 points15 points ago

Weeds used to be a good show but after season 3 or 4 it went downhill.

[–]joker_75Methhead 16 points17 points ago

When the Botwins left Agrestic, Weeds tanked for me. I am watching the final season now, mainly just to see resolution. I've seen random episodes from previous seasons, and read up on the plot of what I missed (thanks wikipedia)

[–]Chipotlaway97 9 points10 points ago

I can't even watch the new season. Every season is just painful to watch.

[–]shitniggachill 2 points3 points ago

I watch every episode like a sucker. I have seen worse but it's like it's not even the same show anymore. They also do the stop selling/start selling thing over and over. Previews for next week show they go back for the final episode or2.

[–]CMelodyChocolatey River of Meth 4 points5 points ago

Agree. The Agrestic years were great, but this is a show has long overstayed it's welcome. I hate to admit I still do watch it, although usually two weeks after the new episode airs and while I'm doing laundry, mostly just to check in with Silas and Andy because they are so damn cute.

[–]Reservoiren 1 point2 points ago

I am there for the resolution as well.

I feel really bad for Doug this season. Not that anything particularly bad has happened to him (besides an inconsequential stabbing), but just how he's been written.

[–]geckahn 2 points3 points ago

The pinnacle of weeds was U-Turn. Specifically this scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZJjTEmXaf8

[–]sassymeepitMethhead 1 point2 points ago

I guess I'm not the only one. I started watching on netflix, and the first couple seasons I was watching attentively, then half way through the 3rd season I gave up. It started getting too far fetched or something.

[–]arudeandvulgarname 2 points3 points ago

Yeah when I watch weeds I don't really get the feeling of any character development going on. I feel like I'm watching a show that's just not natural it's like every thing that happens to them is out of luck. Unlike BB which makes you think "holy crap things like this can happen, weeds makes me think this women would have been either sold into slavery or murdered if she had try to do what she does...

[–]PdubsNWO 1 point2 points ago

BB is really good, but as far as drug related shows go, The Wire probably takes the cake. Either way, I cant believe that ignorant statement. Weeds must be the only show shes ever seen thats about drugs, because its probably the worst one...

[–]CANCER_PUNCH 7 points8 points ago

Territory is code for OP's room.

[–]yocgriffThanks Titties of Walt!! 2 points3 points ago

Weeds really could've been great if they stayed on the "Shane is going to grow up a psychopath" route. They were signs early on that his character and story could've been amazing. Too bad that went a different direction

[–]poohter 1 point2 points ago

They try to be so edgy, but it's only edgy for 20 years ago. It's forwards and backwards at the same time.

[–]mandalakud 6 points7 points ago

There aren't even any real stoners in the show. That 70s show is probably better ... I've said it before and I'll say it again, weeds is nothing but pretty actors & actresses, propaganda, and lesbians.

[–]DanC520 2 points3 points ago

Weeds just isn't believable and Breaking Bad is. I can explain this in more detail, but I don't think that's necessary.

[–]DivinusVoxGET THE BEANS 0 points1 point ago

Weeds certainly did it first, though on pay-cable. And it's shortly coming to a series finale soon, as they return to Agrestic. But seriously, you're comparing a high tense drama with a light comedy?

[–]osteenq 2 points3 points ago

I was tired of Weeds after one episode.

[–]troncatsandwiches 2 points3 points ago

Weeds went downhill too fast. Anything past the first 2 seasons sucks terribly

[–]ashmawaq 0 points1 point ago

weeds was absolute shit after like the 6th season and Nancy is made out to be such an abused whore that i really dont care about her. Breaking bad is so skillfully written and planned that theres never a character you cant stand and you always want more

[–]crackbabydaddyMethhead -1 points0 points ago

yep, this subreddit doesn't like Weeds, I heard this before.

[–]hooizyooWalt's a scientist. Scientists love lasers. 1 point2 points ago

Weeds used to be a decent show, but hasn't been good since season 3. That being said, it was never even close to being on Breaking Bad's level. Weeds is a drug show that's palatable to moms and middle America. If you really want to shock your mom, show her The Wire.

[–]qwertybertyKiss the cook 1 point2 points ago

I used to watch Weeds while smoking trees. Will not do the same for BrBa. In other words, I will not smoke meth while watching a drama about meth like how I smoked weed while watching a drama about marijuana.

[–]JJRage 1 point2 points ago

Yikes, a lot of Weeds hate here.

I don't think comparing the two shows is even remotely fair. Their main characters share an origin (a desperate person turning to the drug trade only to lose sight of their original intentions) but Weeds has never attempted to approach the darkness and depth of Breaking Bad. Weeds was intended from inception to be a comedy, a genre which has never required complex storylines and character growth. Arrested Development thrived on the premise of an entire cast do characters that refused to grow or learn a lesson from anything.

Comparing the two shows is like comparing Halo to Call of Duty. They both share a similar premise (shoot dudes), but they're still wildly different.

[–]Tuco_bell 0 points1 point ago

It's simple. Weeds is the high you get from marijuana. Breaking bad is the high you get from meth

[–]gg4465aMILFS MILFS MILFS 0 points1 point ago

Breaking Bad is a great show.

But really.

The Wire, motherfucker.

[–]TehFuggernaut 0 points1 point ago

Weeds is terrible. It started out as eifersutcht12a said (suburban housewife getting laid), but that show got dark and in a not fun way. Mom turned into a prostitute, her kids are fuck ups AND creepy, and she's living in Mexico half the time. No one gives a shit about living in Mexico.

Go back to California and sell drugs to your neighbors and get into hijinx with the butler.

[–]sacramentalist 0 points1 point ago

Weeds is Heroes. Breaking Bad is Fringe

[–]crashdummie 0 points1 point ago

My girlfriend made me watch Weeds and The Big C before she made me discover Breaking Bad. BrBa really is the best of both worlds.
