That awkward moment when you find out this is false but believe it anyway because the internet is always true.

[–]FunkEnet 135 points136 points ago

Yup, here is the snopes article on it. Apparently, yes it is a racist catch-phrase but no it is not Romney's motto.

[–]DankBeard 3 points4 points ago

How is it racist?

[–]Thomsenite 39 points40 points ago

It's not inherently, but I think they are saying racist groups use it as their motto.

[–]J7x 11 points12 points ago

The exact term on it's own isn't necessarily racist, but it is a slogan used by racist organizations. Thus making it a "racist slogan."

EDIT: Haha I didn't say it was racist! In fact, I clearly said the term on its own wasn't racist. I even used quote marks to show it's only deemed racist due to it's use by certain organizations. The words itself aren't racist, they just have a link and preconception because of that.

It would be the same if Romneys slogan was "AMERICA: Home of the Whopper" only instead of the racist link, people would claim he was advertising burger king.

To all the people saying that the KKK also use air and roads.. Okay, how about if Romney came out to do a speech dressed in a white robe and hood? That'd be fine right? Just using one absurd example against another.

2nd EDIT: If I was American I would vote for anyone with the slogan "AMERICA: Home of the Whopper." Hell, I'd vote for a prime minister in the UK with that slogan.

[–]malvoliosf 3 points4 points ago

So if a racist drives a Ford, a Ford is a "racist vehicle"?

[–]doinkus 14 points15 points ago

No, I've never seen a Ford go that fast.

[–]Cyathem 1 point2 points ago

Tell that to Shelby, sir.

[–]Sanwi 0 points1 point ago

zing.

[–]Oscar_Wilde_Ride 6 points7 points ago

Of course not, but you've set up a ginormous strawman. You might as well have said, "So if a racist breathes, is breathing racist?" The comparison is unjust.

Now, if an organization called itself The Third Reich (or even the Fourth Reich) I think you would see how that would be racist. It's just words, they just mean things, but there is a subtext to them that is imbued with meaning.

A racist slogan, once thrust into the common discourse retains is imbued with more meaning that the direct words. If this is indeed a racist slogan (I'm not familiar with it), then it is a racist slogan. That same imbuing does not occur for absolutely anything a racist organization comes in contact with.

[–]redditlovesfish 1 point2 points ago

yes

[–]kencole54321 2 points3 points ago

So if the Nazi's use a Swastika, the Swastika is a "racist symbol"?

I'll see your strawman argument and call with an equally convincing one for the other side.

[–]malvoliosf 0 points1 point ago

I'm not sure if zimzalbim is making the same point or the opposite one, but I'll answer there.

[–]Able_Seacat_Simon -2 points-1 points ago

the Swastika is a "racist symbol"?

yes

[–]kencole54321 0 points1 point ago

That's my point.

[–]zimzalabim 1 point2 points ago

That isn't really an appropriate analogy. A Ford is not a sign or symbol, nor does it convey any inherent meaning, on the other hand a motto is symbolic as it is a representation of certain ideas and concepts which it is intended to communicate. A more appropriate analogy would be the use of the swastika; the swastika was originally intended to convey the meaning of peace and existed well in advance of Nazism. The symbol was then used by the Nazis and as a result it developed a new meaning divorced from the original meaning it was intended to convey. That is to say that though a swastika is not necessarily a racist symbol, as it can be used in a quite opposite context to its more modern use, it is best to avoid using signs and symbols such as the swastika in its original context or "Keep America, American" as they can convey meanings that are unintended.

[–]malvoliosf 0 points1 point ago

A car would be an unintentional symbol, if a symbol at all.

A swastika would be an intentional symbol, but one could argue that it is misappropriated.

A slogan has its own independent semantic content, so if it's adopted (or coined) by racists, on the one hand you have to ask yourself, why would they even use the phrase if they didn't at all suspect that its meaning would support their distasteful ideology?

On the other hand, the phrase does have meaning, it has independent semantic ballast. Even if some morons choose to misuse a statement or misunderstand it, well, that's why we call them morons.

Personally, I reject the phrase not because of its association but because of its inherent implications: those people who are Americans now have some special privileges or special qualities over those who wish to be American.

[–]DankBeard 0 points1 point ago

Isn't that poisoning the well??

[–]xafimrev -2 points-1 points ago

Racists organizations use roads, breathe air, and post on reddit, stop using their racist air and racist roads for your own purpose you racist.....er well you get the idea.

[–]FunkEnet 12 points13 points ago

It is a catch-phrase used by racists, so sorry.

[–]DankBeard 10 points11 points ago

You don't have to be sorry, just asking a question.

[–]SNORTIMER_HAMSWORTH 4 points5 points ago

He's Canadian. He can't help it!

[–]fuckingcalmdown -1 points0 points ago

He said "Sorry," not "Soorry." FunkEnet is probably a Brit.

[–]malvoliosf 5 points6 points ago

The implication -- and pretty clear one -- is that the people who are currently American, are somehow the "real Americans" and immigrants are not.

"He's apparently under the impression that 'Patrick Buchanan' is a Cherokee Indian name."

[–]DankBeard 1 point2 points ago

I think that 'Keep America American' could relate to constitutional law, foreign policy, democratic processes, and things that we all have common ground on.

As for context, I'm from Massachusetts. Mitt Romney did not ever represent anything racist and actually gave us (with the help of state politicians) Masshealth. Your explanation makes perfect sense with the GOP stigma but I was a little surprised to see Romney cast in this light.

[–]shiskabobtron 7 points8 points ago

If it has anything to do with Mitt Romney or republicans, it's going to be horribly misconstrued by reddit.

[–]RTFW 2 points3 points ago

Romney is the Republican candidate and therefore must be racist. It's in all the guidebooks. Anyone non-white or non-male in the Republican Party is just a traitor according to those same books.

[–]stuhfoo -2 points-1 points ago

yes, can you get more defensive? All the reverse racism you have to deal with on a daily basis must be bringing you down, no? Don't have any real struggles in your life so you have to make them up now, right?

[–]malvoliosf 1 point2 points ago

I think that 'Keep America American' could relate to constitutional law

It could, but I don't think anyone did interpret it that way.

Your explanation makes perfect sense with the GOP stigma but I was a little surprised to see Romney cast in this light.

An utterly baseless accusation? In politics? Shocking.

[–]DankBeard 0 points1 point ago

An utterly baseless accusation? In politics? Shocking.

That's why I find these exchanges valuable.

[–]Edgerunner10 0 points1 point ago

It could, but I don't think anyone did interpret it that way.

I did. Why would anyone think of it any other way? I could easily say that America is the home of immigrants and the land of opportunity and that in itself is an American value. To say that Keep America American is racist based on the thought that it's not taking into account any other race is absurd and consequentially racist in itself? Well guess what, immigrants are Americans too.

[–]malvoliosf 0 points1 point ago

I could easily say that America is the home of immigrants and the land of opportunity and that in itself is an American value.

That's certainly a much more sensible way to interpret it, I just don't think it was meant or heard that way.

Somebody at the RNC said, "Let America be America", which carries your meaning, much less ambiguously.

[–]jerkstate 1 point2 points ago

the catchphrase itself is racist because it implies or states that "America" would not be "American" if more recent immigrants were allowed to have the same rights and freedoms as white protestant americans.

[–]dclowd9901 -4 points-3 points ago

Like the Republican party itself, it's not racist, just beloved by racists.

[–]DankBeard 2 points3 points ago

That doesn't answer my question. I know plenty of liberals that love America and the values it was founded on.

[–]malvoliosf -5 points-4 points ago

Remember, the Republican Party was formed to support slavery.

Wait....

[–]Able_Seacat_Simon -1 points0 points ago

Yes, the Republican party used to be radical, but they all died. The GOP of today is not the party of Lincoln and hasn't been for for at least 60 years.

[–]dclowd9901 -2 points-1 points ago

And mold is dangerous and useless.

Just because something was true at one point doesn't mean it has any bearing on reality now.

[–]malvoliosf 0 points1 point ago

So we can disregard all evidence from the past. Maybe we should just re-elect George Bush.

The last formal ties between the Klan and the Democrats were severed in 2010.

[–]WalrusTits -2 points-1 points ago

You're not great at context

[–]DankBeard 2 points3 points ago

I'm not great at a lot of things.

[–]Ahrounmoon 1 point2 points ago

Interesting. The end of the article points to a misunderstanding where he was quoted as saying "Keep America America." That one little "N" seems to be making the difference for some people. Without a greater context I'm not sure either statement is really that different from the other.

[–]FunkEnet 1 point2 points ago

You are right, but it was a one off statement, not a slogan. I definitely would like to hear someone explain why the missing "N" makes such a difference. If there is one I don't see it.

[–]William_the_Bastard 1 point2 points ago

With the "n" references the population.

Without the "n" references the government.

If you're talking about "Keep America America" it's in reference to the freedoms, liberties, etc that people enjoy. Don't change the structure of the country; don't make it harder to realize the American dream.

When you add that "n" it is in relation to the makeup of the population. Keeping America "American" means that you don't want the people to be different than they are now. It means that the "real" Americans are white, Protestant, and have been present in the country for generations. If you're not white, then you're not American. (Just for clarification, this is how I understand what this phrase means in the KKK's use of it, and this is not my opinion on what an American actually is.)

So, in my eyes, there actually is a big difference. Romney saying, "Keep America America" isn't all that terrible. It's a little cheesy, yes, but I don't see any racial undertones to it.

[–]Mr_Slippery 0 points1 point ago

It's not racist, but it is a bit tone-deaf. Once someone points out to you that you're one easily-slurred letter away from a KKK motto, you reconsider your phrasing. When you were raised in a religious minority that didn't consider black people fully human until the 1970s and are running against a black man, you seriously reconsider your phrasing.

[–]U2_is_gay -2 points-1 points ago

Why it be Romney's motto? Non-Americans will do the work for us by self-deporting.

[–]Kowzorz 75 points76 points ago

That awkward moment when someone uses that awkward moment.

[–]AATroop 36 points37 points ago

Fuck that moment.

[–]ExtraCheesed_Buddha 18 points19 points ago

It's awkward

[–]AllTattedUpJay 1 point2 points ago

now it's all sticky. Shouldn't have listened to you ಠ_ಠ......

[–]Masshole3000 0 points1 point ago

that awkward moment when the moment got awkward..

[–]Eist 11 points12 points ago

Or, you at least believe it because it's anti-Romney.

[–]JKR93 7 points8 points ago

That awkward moment when this was just posted yesterday, and is false, and from a fake twitter account.

[–]rafuzo2 -1 points0 points ago

"fake but accurate"

[–]wiltedbouquet 1 point2 points ago

I believe it because: Confirmation bias.

Actually, Republicans aren't so bad if you stop reading what the internet says about them.

[–]endercoaster -4 points-3 points ago

Yeah, wanting to strip all welfare programs and impose a Christian theocracy that treats gays and women as second class citizens isn't that bad. Oh wait, it is.

[–]jsrduck 5 points6 points ago

You just proved his point

[–]djlabcoat 5 points6 points ago

apoeticturtle is obama's throw away account.

[–]Birdslapper 3 points4 points ago

Ugh, and now people are posting this picture to facebook. Dammit.

[–]HiImTed 136 points137 points ago

That's never been his campaign slogan

[–]Drekken- 40 points41 points ago

But it is imperative for the left to keep branding any Republican a racist. It is one of the worst smear campaigns I have seen lately.

[–]Bezzie 17 points18 points ago

But if the lefts aren't racists and the rights aren't either then who are the racists gonna vote for?!

[–]lxlbluesteellxl 26 points27 points ago

Probably not Obama cause he's black...

[–]Bezzie 0 points1 point ago

[–]lxlbluesteellxl 0 points1 point ago

Ah, you caught me there!

[–]Koocnahtanoj -3 points-2 points ago

So apparently racists only hate black people?

[–]MackLuster77 0 points1 point ago

He probably should have said "not white."

[–]Drekken- 0 points1 point ago

Obama is half white. Everyone seems to forget this... Including Obama.

[–]MackLuster77 -1 points0 points ago

Half-white isn't white enough for a white racist.

[–]HoldSteadyYborCity -2 points-1 points ago

Ugh. What does that even mean?

[–]Birdslapper 0 points1 point ago

no, they hate us Arabs just as much if not more

[–]dydxexisex -2 points-1 points ago

The majority does

[–]the_cowboy 7 points8 points ago

Led by one of the most dastardly smear artists the left has to offer: actor/screenwriter Seth Rogen.

[–]demoz71 2 points3 points ago

I would consider one of the worst smear campaigns to be when the left made up that quote about the Republican Senator saying if it was really rape then the woman couldn't get pregnant.

Oh wait.

[–]Able_Seacat_Simon 0 points1 point ago

The problem isn't that Democrats keep pointing out that Republicans are super racist(because they totally are.) It's that we don't point out when other Democrats are racist.

[–]LaziestNoveltyAcct 1 point2 points ago

let us be honest with ourselves about racism and the modern day republican party

[–]erveek 0 points1 point ago

Romney supporters complaining about inaccurate narrative spread by rubes.

This is rich.

[–]eyeland12 2 points3 points ago

It bugs me that reddit's been doing so much anti-romney circlejerking that they dont even check facts anymore. its a shame this got to the frontpage

[–]HiImTed 0 points1 point ago

that's American politics. One great big circus.

there is some valuable stuff here though, but yeah, I've learned to accept that misinformation can be pedaled by both sides.

[–]sp3nt 44 points45 points ago

This was on the front page yesterday, and isn't even true. Fuck off you reposting scalawag.

[–]blueboybob 62 points63 points ago

confirmed false

[–]saganhill 8 points9 points ago

[–]joe100su 61 points62 points ago

[–]rockerman100 17 points18 points ago

repost move along

[–]Biodegraded 18 points19 points ago

They're not critiquing Seth Rogen (a comedian), they are critiquing you (not a comedian) for REPOSTING something unfunny AND inaccurate. GASP

Edit: AND not even said by Seth Rogen!

[–]explodingplant 1 point2 points ago

I like how the handle is "Real_Seth" when it's so obviously not the real Seth. I mean they used the poster for Knocked Up as his picture. Ricky Gervais told a story about how someone tried to use his bank account to buy gold bullion. Their faked Ricky Gervais passport photo was just taken from the cover of The Office DVD.

[–]DQT95 22 points23 points ago

That awkward moment when Obama's "Forward" slogan is similar to slogans used by both Stalin and Mao. You don't see a whole lot of conservative celebrities bitching about it though. http://www.theblaze.com/stories/forward-for-communism-is-obamas-new-forward-slogan-really-a-coincidence/

[–]CuntMcFuckGiggles 4 points5 points ago

Shhh!

You're attempting to introduce lucid and intelligent thought into a highly liberal forum (Reddit).

Do you want to get downvoted to the depths of internet hell, man? Have you no concern for the college professors who spend hours driving their "do as I say, not as I do" holier-than-thou liberal mantra into the heads of impressionable young students?

[–]tyme 1 point2 points ago

You don't see a whole lot of conservative celebrities bitching about it though.

Well, this is a fake twitter account, so...yeah. Not actually a celebrity bitching about it.

[–]djlewt 0 points1 point ago

You don't see a whole lot of conservative celebrities bitching about it though.

Says the guy as he posts a story about it from Glenn Beck's website.

[–]gocougs11 1 point2 points ago

[–]Able_Seacat_Simon 0 points1 point ago

The Mooney Times? Not really.

[–]Niftyo 1 point2 points ago

If Glenn Beck cracked the code with his magic chalkboard and man tears, it must be true. Good find.

[–]melesion 14 points15 points ago

Oh, Jezus. How about that awkward moment when Reddit upvotes 87 posts about the same celebrity death to the front page?

[–]melesion 0 points1 point ago

Really fucking awkward too.

[–]Kastenbr0t 0 points1 point ago

What, both are instagram'd?

[–]MisterWonka 3 points4 points ago

Jesus christ, this was JUST POSTED and it is NOT FUNNY and it is NOT TRUE. That's not even Seth Rogen's fucking Twitter account. WHY ARE PEOPLE UPVOTING THIS?!

Reddit, get your shit together for fuck's sake.

[–]keenansmith61 3 points4 points ago

This was posted yesterday, with the EXACT same title.

[–]malenkylizards 7 points8 points ago

[–]DeVoh 0 points1 point ago

While it pains me to say it... It is false.. http://www.snopes.com/politics/romney/slogan.asp

[–]SoFunAnon 0 points1 point ago

Why would that pain you to say? I loathe this attitude...

[–]DeVoh 0 points1 point ago

It pains me because from what I see most of the BS is coming from that camp.. but I seek the truth, and so I post that it is BS. From sites that do fact checking Obama is in the lead for "less" blatant fibbing. That said almost all politicians suck, lie, and suck..

[–]spoulson 1 point2 points ago

Snopes and a bunch of other articles places are saying it's not true, not his slogan, he didn't say it, yadda yadda.

The video in the snopes article has him saying "Keep America America". That's pretty damn close.

[–]cenobyte40k -1 points0 points ago

"Keep American America" Either an idiot or a xenophobe said this. Yes it's slightly off from the totally racist KKK thing, but its still the same meaning.

[–]gocougs11 0 points1 point ago

It's not at all the same meaning. "Keep America America" is more easily interpreted as wanting to maintain the values our founding fathers believed in. "Keep America American" is more easily interpreted as oppressive towards non-American people.

[–]LongDongSchlongers 0 points1 point ago

Well, the thing is without knowing the context, keeping America American sounds good. It's all in the eyes of what each persons "America" is.

One person it might mean that white males run everything, and women and any non-Caucasian is a second class citizen. Another person might see it as being free.

[–]spungie -1 points0 points ago

Lets get something straight. All the left wing comedians and liberal pundits and talk show heads are voting for Romney. They have been starving for a president they can take cheap shots at without being called racist.
