[–]Greymor 2 points3 points ago

Woah, cool. Thanks I was working.

[–]IncidentOn57thStreet 5 points6 points ago

I wonder what that grid like one sounded like.

[–]Smithium 4 points5 points ago

It looks like it evolved into the Hebrew Samekh which I still don't know how to pronounce, but it might be easier to figure out from that.

[–]aamo 2 points3 points ago

Samekh is equivalent to the letter S.

[–]trampus1 4 points5 points ago

Even in a gif of the alphabet, OP is isolated.

[–]lavoiebelle 7 points8 points ago

I never thought I would sit and stare at letters for so long and kind of enjoy it.

[–]aryary 14 points15 points ago

Isn't that the basic premise of Reddit, though?

[–]SpaceCampDropOut 3 points4 points ago

Any given reason to why the Greeks 500 BCE would take some of the already "common" letters, and flip them?

[–]potterarchy 7 points8 points ago

Phoenician was written right-to-left, and Greek left-to-right, so I should think there was probably some confusion once the Greek adopted the Phoenician alphabet about which letters were written which way. There's also boustrophedon, which may have complicated things a bit. Just my theory - you might want to drop by /r/linguistics for more info.

[–]mercurialsaliva 3 points4 points ago

Go Phoenicia!

[–]TheBishopsBane 2 points3 points ago

Anyone who likes this kind of stuff should check out Letter Perfect: The Marvelous History of Our Alphabet from A to Z by David Sacks

[–]potterarchy 0 points1 point ago

Such a good book!

[–]kimbrough 2 points3 points ago

/r/linguistics is nice if you enjoy this kind of stuff, i'm just a lurker there though, don't wanna bother anyone with retarded questions/posts lol

[–]cyport 1 point2 points ago

If and when will we see a new letter added?

[–]potterarchy 3 points4 points ago

I'd hazard a guess at never. Alphabets and spelling were a lot more fluid back in the day, because people didn't have dictionaries like we do today to refer to, so they did what made sense to them. But today we do have dictionaries (and "Grammar Nazis") who are working hard at keeping changes from happening in English. It would take a massive upheaval to the English language (the introduction of sounds we didn't have previously, which would need new letters to represent them, and/or perhaps political control from countries that use another alphabet), for the English alphabet to change.

That's my opinion, anyway...

[–]Theemuts 4 points5 points ago

But a text written 100 years ago would seem archaic to you. Languages change more rapidly than even the most diligent grammar nazis can handle, it's only a matter of time before written English turns into a literary language; there's already an enormous mismatch between spelling and pronunciation.

[–]potterarchy 1 point2 points ago

You might be interested to read this debate from last week in /r/linguistics, which went into what kind of an effect internet and widespread media are having on language change.

[–]RileyWon 1 point2 points ago

Other languages have more letters, some less. You might get a new letter when you have a sound common enough to warrant it. Like th sh ch ss oo, but i think English Roman covers everything we need. I doubt any new letters are going to be added anytime in the next century, especially with the keyboard basically standardizing writing.

[–]phliuy 1 point2 points ago

Also, you would often see a "U" in the place of a V in early latin. God I hated that. I would be reading perfectly, and then all of a sudden this scumbag u pops up out of nowhere and throws me off. Fucking U. I hate U.

[–]Mernercreft 0 points1 point ago

Hey,where is Č and Ć ?:)

[–]9bowlsofsoup 0 points1 point ago

Someone should put Unown alphabet to this pic.

[–]HappyLittleTetrad 0 points1 point ago

Pretty nifty!

[–]Bulleta 0 points1 point ago

Even then, they left out Thorn (and only had a capital Eth, but didn't show how it evolved, even though the ancestor of it was there). More importantly, the long S, which we used up until last century, was completely ignored, so its main descendant (the ß) was not present either.

I would have loved to see a more animated struggle on Gamma morphing into the present C by butting in on Kappa's business, but how would you animate that?

[–]Capsuna -2 points-1 points ago

a wild faggot appears circa 500 BC

[–]Theemuts 0 points1 point ago

This doesn't account for the letter rho in the Greek alphabet which strongly resembles the letter P in the Latin alphabet.

[–]calvin0821 0 points1 point ago

Neat

[–]toomanylizards 0 points1 point ago

you know people from Phoenix are Phoenicians.

[–]pingthepong 0 points1 point ago

This explains all the backwards letters I write. In my past life I was Phoenician.

[–]sladoid 0 points1 point ago

Why no Sanskrit? That shits early evolution!

[–]commom_username 0 points1 point ago

thank you - you have no idea how this will help me in college (graphic designer)

[–]abow 0 points1 point ago

If W came from V why is it called "double U?"

[–]this_sort_of_thing 3 points4 points ago

Well, evolution of the English Alphabet, mostly.

[–]Captainshithead 5 points6 points ago

*Latin

[–]this_sort_of_thing 5 points6 points ago

No, because it hasn't shown all the other letters that derived from the Latin alphabet, it's focused mostly on the English alphabet

It's shown a few other letters from German etc.. but not really.

[–]thenewiBall -1 points0 points ago

It was made by an American so it was probably used to show how English Alphabet evolved but I'm glad you could act pissy about it

[–]this_sort_of_thing 3 points4 points ago

It's not acting pissy I was just pointing it out, wow, say one thing and people start getting angry at you and downvotes everywhere, what a petulant group of people.

[–]EricWRN 1 point2 points ago

FUCK OFF that is the greatest thing I've EVER SEEN

[–]ckolev 0 points1 point ago

That was nice :) GJ

[–]modomario 0 points1 point ago

[–]ckolev 0 points1 point ago

I haven't seen it. :)

[–]modomario 0 points1 point ago

GJ on ctrl C - ctrl P ? Either way still a nice and informative gif and all.

[–]iaacp 0 points1 point ago

A+ gif. I like how it pauses a long time at the end.

[–]shiv96 -5 points-4 points ago

The GIF is annoying. Too damn slow.
