The absolute suckiest thing about being sick as an adult is that you still have to do stuff. No mom there bringing you soup, and chances are your fridge is empty, gotta fill that shit. 39 degrees fever and grocery shopping do not mix well at all, especially if you absolutely HAVE to be well the next day.

So true. I'm currently wrestling with the guilt of taking a sick day from work, knowing that certain tasks won't get finished without me. And I picture my boss telling my co-workers, "goodbatch is out sick today," to which they respond by running in all directions through the hallways and throwing paperwork everywhere while screaming, "NOOOoooooo!!! Dear God nooooooooooo!!!" Totally plausible scenario.

getting sick as adult is not an option. I remember the (10?) days of swineflu. must have been the most adult moments of my life. 40+ fever w/ light hallucinations. I could lie and stare at the ceiling for hours every day, just thinking, trying to plan how I should walk the dog and put food in my mouth.

For a lot of us, yes. I've only ever taken off work for being sick when I got a fever while at work, and then I just had to eat the pay. And of course I was back the next day to annoy everyone for the following week with sniffling and coughing. Fun!

I never got this philosophy. I've always said that if I'm too sick to work then I'm too sick to play video games. Most I'll ever do is move onto the couch and watch documentaries all day or something. The only exception I've made to this rule is when I knew that my mental state was altered (due to medication) and any work that I would do would end up being counter productive.

I always feel guilty doing something engaging that I enjoy like a video game when I know I could just as easily be working. As a result of me not being in the office, the people who did show up have to pick up my slack. Why should I have fun while they suffer?

Right but I'm in a situation where I am able to work from home on days that I am feeling infectious and such activity is encouraged by my company. I only take a true sick day when I don't feel like I could even accomplish this feat. This was in contrast to my old roommate who had the same opportunities at his job. He would take a sickday every time he felt a slight cold citing that he's contagious. He would then proceed to play video games all day, watch movies and complain about how it's going to turn into bronchitis.
