The Reddit Insurance Plan: We won't replace your damaged goods, but you can trade in pictures of it for karma.

[–]thetruegmon 23 points24 points ago

You guys should really stop parking your cars inside of trees.

[–]FreshBoyChris 24 points25 points ago

What a beautiful car. I'm sorry for you man.

[–]idealisticcynicist 7 points8 points ago

I came in here laughing at the wrecked Honda Civic only to be touched by a tragic loss of a beautiful Lancer Evo VIII. My condolences to you

[–]brown_felt_hat 0 points1 point ago

If I ever get a car, remind me to never park near trees. This seems to be fairly common.

[–]Mothmanx 0 points1 point ago

you do have to have some extreme bad luck. That was actually my driveway that I parked on, I moved to my current house about a month ago.

Along with the angle that the tree fell, it could of fallen on my house I guess, so it wasn't the absolute worst case scenario. still terrible luck though.

[–]r4mbini 0 points1 point ago

does the average insurance plan cover this sort of thing?

[–]Mothmanx 1 point2 points ago

I needed comprehensive, and as a P-plater (basically young driver, you get on a 'provisional' licence) The insurance companies rack up the prices so being comprehensive would be paying the equivalent to a third of the car every year.

I've had the car for about 3 years now so it comprehensive woudln't have been worth it if I had it.

I was able to hand in my number plates and cancel my registration for a little bit of a refund, so that pretty much covered my change of ownership (of my replacement car) tax.

[–]benjamamin 959 points960 points ago

Wait a minute, this is way more than mildly interesting. I would go so far to say that I'm very interested.

[–]FaerieStories 259 points260 points ago

Yeah.

How dare he!

[–]JBHUTT09 114 points115 points ago

[–]OneCello 42 points43 points ago

You can't not tell me what I can or cant think about not doing!

[–]Reesch 23 points24 points ago

They don't think it be like it is, but it do.

[–]GrammarGorilla 7 points8 points ago

What a mildly interesting conversation. Good job guys.

[–]cacher371 5 points6 points ago

Indeed, the comments taper off nicely in shock value after those pictures.

[–]GrammarGorilla 2 points3 points ago

Happy cakeday btw

[–]WilliamDangerFord 1 point2 points ago

I've noticed that r/mildlyinteresting is the only place where everyone seems to get along, even when the guidelines aren't properly followed.

[–]splunge4me2 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man

[–]Coloneljesus 7 points8 points ago

That subreddit has gone a bit downhill. People are just circlejerking about how they don't follow the expressed or unspoken rules of their own subreddit.

Noone actually disobeys real life rules anymore...

[–]WaterChestnut3 2 points3 points ago

A burglar ate your placenta

[–]TrainOfThought6 1 point2 points ago

This is exactly why this subreddit is pretty much a win-win scenario.

[–]MrNovember785 20 points21 points ago

I'm wholly intrigued.

[–]pakattak 33 points34 points ago

I'd rather people underestimate the interest of their post rather than have WTF or Funny be full of mundane, uninteresting crap.

[–]GenericUsername02 19 points20 points ago

Both WTF and funny are full of mundane, uninteresting crap. This subreddit is full of mildly interesting stuff, not uninteresting stuff, hence the name.

[–]RedSquaree 3 points4 points ago

I disagree with that stance. This is turning into the new /r/reddit.com unfortunately due to lack of the "mildly" part being enforced.

This sub has been great for a reason. With all these supposed "underestimates", it's just /r/funny / /r/WTF leaking.

[–]pakattak 2 points3 points ago

Good point.

[–]Heartnotes 3 points4 points ago

This subreddit is getting too good and interesting!

I will show my protest by unsubscribing!

[–]jambox888 2 points3 points ago

You do realise that you're complaining about things being too interesting?

[–]NickDouglas 0 points1 point ago

Don't even try the new queue there. I feel like an asshole leaving a string of downvotes, so badly that I have to show someone that shit to verify that it is all indeed utterly unfunny.

[–]zmekus 32 points33 points ago

This kind of comment is in every post in this subreddit

[–]Orval 44 points45 points ago

It is, but this is truly fascinating. Did he sign off on the image? Because it would appear OP had no idea it would be used.

Usually people are joking and usually yes the joke is annoying, but this is QUITE interesting. It's fine here but just saying.

[–]IlludiumQ-36 23 points24 points ago

Even stranger, the book was published BEFORE his car was crushed

[–]hinve_st[S] 9 points10 points ago

What happened is that a coworker took that specific photo in the book, and it's available online as a stock image. I didn't know this at the time, was quite a surprise!

[–]Favo32 1 point2 points ago

The picture in the book and the picture he took are different.

[–]hinve_st[S] 8 points9 points ago

You are correct. I did not take the specific photo that was published. The photos on imgur are indeed my own photos.

[–]cizpre 8 points9 points ago

Man, /r/mildlyinteresting really has gone downhill lately...

[–]xx0ur3n 4 points5 points ago

I agree, thought this was /r/pics.

[–]Nj_all_day 4 points5 points ago

ehhh I'm gonna go with moderately interesting

[–]DoughnutHole 2 points3 points ago

Seriously guys, what is this, /r/interesting or something?

[–]R1psaw 0 points1 point ago

Quite interesting, indeed.

[–]liberalis 0 points1 point ago

Interesting level = very.

[–]nOTwORTHtHEeFFORT 83 points84 points ago

Also mildly interesting, I bought this same book for my daughter.

[–]JustBrowsing4Chan 58 points59 points ago

If you could post a picture (of the book) I'll be mildly interested enough to reach my climax

[–]JustBrowsing4Chan 48 points49 points ago

You... You delivered?!

[–]Marshallo 25 points26 points ago

Your copy says "UK" and OP's says "Great Britain" above the car picture, things just got way more interesting.

[–]nOTwORTHtHEeFFORT 12 points13 points ago

Plus the OP is from NZ, just to throw another curve ball into the mix.

[–]JoustingTimberflake 7 points8 points ago

Too interesting. Please mods add a NSFW tag to all these heathens.

[–]roguewave 1 point2 points ago

I wonder if they'd never say UK in the UK edition, so they got more specific.

[–]johnyutah 11 points12 points ago

Go to bed man...

[–]nOTwORTHtHEeFFORT 8 points9 points ago

I was up at 4:30am for another day of work.

[–]kingdavecako 4 points5 points ago

Not worth the effort.

[–]xb4r7x 3 points4 points ago

Was this worth the effort?

[–]nOTwORTHtHEeFFORT 2 points3 points ago

Only mildly.

[–]TheLobotomizer -1 points0 points ago

"Dear diary:

One month has passed since OP delivered. It's been a mildly interesting month to say the least. My only hope is to see another OP deliver before I die."

[–]Typlo 21 points22 points ago

This is actually mildly interesting, when the OP story is pretty impressive.

[–]Gammy37 44 points45 points ago

That isn't Great Britain, but it is OP's car... the book must be wrong.

JANET, GET ME THE PUBLISHER NOW SO I MAY BERATE THEM!

[–]Cosmologicon 71 points72 points ago

Technically it only says the car was crushed after a storm in Great Britain. It doesn't say that the British storm is what crushed the car.

[–]KarinaFlower 10 points11 points ago

Legalese manipulation

[–]Jonny_Watts 18 points19 points ago

Troll logic?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

[–]bapsteks 106 points107 points ago

Why does it say Great Britain, when it isn't even close..

[–]Peregrine7 45 points46 points ago

It looks to me like New Zealand, up near Aukland.

[–]hinve_st[S] 61 points62 points ago

Yes it is indeed in Auckland. The caption in the book is wrong.

[–]Peregrine7 16 points17 points ago

Holy bananas, I was right!

[–]Gammy37 12 points13 points ago

Did you look at OP's other comments too to see if they mentioned where they live? ;)

[–]Bhrayden 14 points15 points ago

I can confirm this is NZ.

[–]OneArmedNoodler 6 points7 points ago

It's a good thing they put the steering wheel on the wrong side... OP would have been crushed.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Now it's the right side.

[–]Peregrine7 0 points1 point ago

Not yet, why?

EDIT: I lived in NZ (Rotorua) for many a year, flawless victory for me!

[–]GoonerGirl 24 points25 points ago

I thought the same, nowhere in GB looks like that! We build our homes with bricks dammit!

[–]cmdcharco 16 points17 points ago

Also the licence plates on the cars are the wrong colours. (white on the back plate not yellow)

[–]Peregrine7 1 point2 points ago

The signs made me toss up between Australia and NZ, but the trees were a bit of a give away, nowhere near enough gum trees. The colours looked like Welly or Auk so it was 50/50.

[–]GalacticNexus 4 points5 points ago

I never liked those weird American style wooden houses.

Did they never read the 3 Little Pigs? Spoiler: The house of sticks falls down.

[–]Logic007 5 points6 points ago

As an American: we make bacon and bbq out of the pigs well before we get to that point in the story

[–]IAMBollock 6 points7 points ago

THIS NEEDS EXPLAINING OP.

[–]iambutternumber 15 points16 points ago

The Civic is also badged as a VTi but it has crappy 1.5 LSi steel wheels. I'm confuzzled

[–]algorithmae 10 points11 points ago

Hey! Another gearhead that's not in /r/cars! How's life in other subreddits, friend?

[–]iambutternumber 3 points4 points ago

I used to bum Honda's so I know the slightest difference in spec. The wheels caught my eye. Thanks for highlighting r/cars, I had no idea about it. I'll check it out.

[–]dexaler 2 points3 points ago

What about its rims on the wrong side? Against the grain!

[–]hinve_st[S] 4 points5 points ago

You are correct, the photo was taken in Auckland.

[–]rickinyorkshire 7 points8 points ago

Came for this.

[–]shibblywibbly 31 points32 points ago

What an odd fetish.

[–]ChromeDeagle 1 point2 points ago

That's what I wondered. Doesn't look anything like our fair Isle!

[–]BeerPowered 16 points17 points ago

A rust-free civic, nice. I'd have tried to drive it for a bit. Or cut the roof.

[–]ti1tus 123 points124 points ago

1) Claim copyright

2) Sue

3) ?????

4) Profit

Edit: I accidentally a number Edit 2: Y'all know I was kidding, right?

[–]YamiNoSenshi 117 points118 points ago

It happened on the public street, so anyone could take pictures of it. Unless they used a picture he specifically took, they have every right to take their own or buy from a freelancer and publish them.

[–]hinve_st[S] 17 points18 points ago

Indeed, this is what happened.

[–]So_Many_Buckets 7 points8 points ago

What if the OP is a photographer and forgot he took the picture and sold it? O___o

[–]trullard 38 points39 points ago

What if OP has multiple personality disorder and both of them is actually him?

[–]Neepho 12 points13 points ago

What if OP was the tree who purposefully crushed the car so that OP's alternate personality (who is a childrens' book publisher, ofc) could use photos of the crushed car in his book, so that OP's other alternate personality (Yup, prove me wrong that OP doesn't have 3 personalities) who owned the car that he himself crushed, could then make this post so that he could harvest all that mildly interesting karma.

[–]Tasgallxx 3 points4 points ago

Too much work for a redditor. He would just post a picture of his cat and say it was found abandoned in a dumpster.

[–]afuckingHELICOPTER 2 points3 points ago

WHAT IF OP IS A DINOSAUR?

[–]amychelle79 9 points10 points ago

You can't copyright a picture you didn't take. And he is in public, looks like very public so they could have taken a picture of HIM and he still couldn't claim copyright (in US anyway.)

[–]sojourningabroad 8 points9 points ago

Why are there 2 2s?

[–]hinve_st[S] 4 points5 points ago

I did not take the photo that was published in the book. I have a photo that is essentially the same, but that specific photo was taken by a coworker and made available online as a stock photo.

[–]tyrroi 1 point2 points ago

Why would he sue... It's pretty cool to get in a book.

[–]mypetridish 14 points15 points ago

American bullshit lawyers strikes again

[–]KaptainKershaw 16 points17 points ago

That'll buff right out..

[–]jaggazz 3 points4 points ago

Is it still drivable?

[–]hinve_st[S] 9 points10 points ago

This kills the car.

[–]sheephound 3 points4 points ago

Trees hate Honda Civics.

[–]EnysAtSea 2 points3 points ago

Everything hates honda civics.

[–]TormakSaber 5 points6 points ago

Hey, cool, I've seen that while boredly leafing through that same book at work.

[–]Michael_Pitt 10 points11 points ago

Why were you reading the Children's Weather Encyclopedia at work?

[–]wobinidan 22 points23 points ago

He's a meteorologist.

[–]HipstersaurusRex 1 point2 points ago

niiice. i give it a 9/10

[–]TormakSaber 1 point2 points ago

I work retail, and we sell children's books. It's hard not to skim through toys or books when you're bored and have nothing to do!

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

If this was in r/pics you'd be on the front page already. Very interesting!

[–]dzhoneeh 5 points6 points ago

Fucking Civic. Brother owned one. Ran in to Audi. Around 20km/h. Audi had little damage. Civic's front was destroyed.

[–]bronymobile 5 points6 points ago

I read that as 200km/h, made the story much more impressive.

[–]roguewave 0 points1 point ago

The reason they were both OK and the Audi is in good shape is because the Civi absorbed the energy of the crashed and saved their lives. What a piece of shit indeed.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

It was such a clean civic :(

[–]pouncer11 1 point2 points ago

I would have felt a lot better if it just had some rust.

[–]iffy9096 2 points3 points ago

OP,

I wish i had saved it, but I've also seen your car on the internet with the caption above "If you don't lower it" "God will"

Kind of unrelated, but I thought it was pretty funny, maybe you'll run across this picture one day.

[–]popsickletits 7 points8 points ago

/r/KarmaConspiracy will be all over this.

[–]ninjapirate9901 1 point2 points ago

That is a most crushing revelation.

[–]EuropeanLady 1 point2 points ago

The recent photo shows perfectly evenly cut trees whereas the one in the encyclopedia shows trees which are clearly torn from the ground with their roots, as it should be. The first picture seems staged.

[–]Ter3nce 6 points7 points ago

Ah yes, the old 'drop-a-tree-on-the-car-for-karma' trick... We're on to you OP!

[–]savvo 0 points1 point ago

Maybe they cut fallen trees into pieces so they're easier to remove?

[–]EuropeanLady 0 points1 point ago

Maybe they do but what I meant was that it's only the bases of all the trees that are cut, the rest of each tree looks whole on that picture. The rest of the photos show chopped trees.

[–]c0ckBl0cker 1 point2 points ago

That will buff right out

[–]Col-Sanders 1 point2 points ago

I'll give you $50 for the car if there are less than 150,000 miles on it

[–]Sandr0G 1 point2 points ago

Now this is interesting!

[–]mgwooley 1 point2 points ago

That poor, poor eg6 ):

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

uh oh, this is way more than mildly interestering! also, that poor, poor hatch :[

[–]emmulated 1 point2 points ago

why is the incident described as occuring in great britain when this clearly happened in the u.s.a?

[–]hinve_st[S] 1 point2 points ago

Auckland, New Zealand. Caption in the book is incorrect.

[–]hinve_st[S] 1 point2 points ago

For those interested, it occurred here

-36.923725 174.777411

Cheers.

[–]frank2791 1 point2 points ago

My friend's old house showed up on the cover of a book about America's most haunted houses.

[–]fredrol 1 point2 points ago

In 2002 I was in a minor riot and was (unknowingly) photographed when I was carrying a dude who was beaten by a cop. Years later my friends little brother mailed me a picture from his civics (google translated, Swedish "samhällskunskap") book in school. Kind of weird...

http://i.imgur.com/BrNfy.jpg (me in the middle)

[–]purpleit11 0 points1 point ago

Wow! That would be sort of an odd feeling to discover your photo like that. Especially since unfortunately you were blinking! No but seriously, how is the dude you helped? Did you know him prior to the riot? Did the book's text provide accurate information about the event? Also, I love how the OP's car was a Civic and you were photographed in a civic context.

[–]Typlo 0 points1 point ago

Is there a subreddit for impressive coincidences like this one?

[–]toyotech 0 points1 point ago

Hellacrushed. It'll be huge

[–]LaughsTwice[!] 0 points1 point ago

Mildly interesting is an understatement!

[–]dodadoo 0 points1 point ago

But did it still start?

[–]babowling12 0 points1 point ago

That poor, poor hatch. Mother nature can be such a twisted pre-menstrual heffer.

[–]TheThingy 0 points1 point ago

This is extremely interesting

[–]LeeENTfield 0 points1 point ago

Was it YOUR photo that was published?

[–]hinve_st[S] 0 points1 point ago

No, I did not take that photo that was published, it was taken by a coworker, I later found out.

[–]escapist11 0 points1 point ago

This makes me sad as a Civic hatchback is kind of my dream car. ):

[–]ATpup 0 points1 point ago

oh god is that a 97 Honda hatchback? that's what I am driving now ಠ_ಠ

[–]pouncer11 0 points1 point ago

92-95 eg6 IIRC

[–]flinxsl 0 points1 point ago

People drive Honda Civics in the UK?

[–]rdm9313 0 points1 point ago

hella flush

[–]Mylozen 0 points1 point ago

I hope you had comp coverage

[–]Sloob 0 points1 point ago

:( 92-95 civic eg vti.... if it's RHD i'm gona cry.. these worth 10k+ here

EDIT: just saw pic 7/10 i'm crying

[–]simonjp 0 points1 point ago

So, by the sound of things, they just assumed it happened in the UK because the steering wheel's on the right.

[–]bigfunkychiken 0 points1 point ago

[–]browniecookie 0 points1 point ago

so how did the tree fall on your car? the tree looks chopped down, was it an accident?

[–]Tiblet 0 points1 point ago

The text books says that this was in Great Britain, there's no way that was in Britain.

[–]scync 0 points1 point ago

I used to have that book...

[–]SDiaz 0 points1 point ago

nooo.. what a beautiful honda :(

[–]aazav 0 points1 point ago

Lawsuit!

[–]froggy365 0 points1 point ago

Significantly interesting!

[–]pspness 0 points1 point ago

Does insurance cover natural disasters? Lol

[–]Jajajamie 0 points1 point ago

posted in mildly interesting because it was only really interesting the first time I saw it on reddit

[–]ThaFatJabba 0 points1 point ago

guys look at the pictures! ..i dont think this is the same car

[–]Fromnack 0 points1 point ago

The book says it's in Great Britain, but that car is clearly on US plates.

[–]rotzooi 0 points1 point ago

The trucks next to it are from A1 Landscape Services Ltd in Auckland, New Zealand.

[–]invalidx 0 points1 point ago

Those aren't us plates.. they're long and thin. With american plates, the two black bits under the plate in photo 5 would be covered.

[–]T96 0 points1 point ago

I thought this too, but look at the background of picture 5, looks like a roundabout with British signs to me also you can drive cars in Great Britain with European plates for some time but I'm not sure on the exact rules, but on the other hand they look like American houses so I'm clueless.

[–]OBEYiii -1 points0 points ago

I feel a profitable lawsuit forming
