It was posted on /r/anime and I'll use the same response I used for it there:

Why would scientists try to resurrect Jesus?

[–]blaziken311 7 points8 points ago

They're actually Alchemists.

[–]Rinnosuke 8 points9 points ago

In their universe that's pretty much a scientist as alchemy is a science to them.

[–]blaziken311 1 point2 points ago

I don't remember the Elric brothers ever referring to themselves as scientists, always alchemists.

[–]Rinnosuke 1 point2 points ago

The other alchemists however did.

[–]Da_Bomber 1 point2 points ago

Yes, but they often called Alchemy a Science.

Their universe also has a real and literal god. Doesn't really make sense to be an atheist there.

[–]Rinnosuke 3 points4 points ago

to be fair it actually dosen't, The Truth was never really explained as god.

[–]Its_Always_420 2 points3 points ago

It's most definitely a higher power and other characters like Father regularly refer to it as god. I don't really think it gives a crap as to whether or not it's worshiped but it is the source of the science/magic of alchemy.

Well at the end of Brotherhood, The Truth says he is referred to by many names, one of which is God. This doesn't exactly define him as a god or in fact that he has the powers of a god. The way I see it is he acts as the middle man for equivalent exchange; I'd explain further but I don't want to give any(more) spoilers.

Either way, Edward, as shown from the very begining, is an atheist. But then again, maybe they believed in god untill this little mishap.

To prove he had a severe case of paranoia and dissociative identity disorder.

Same reason they'd do anything else: To see what happens.

Genius. This one actually made me 'laugh out loud.' ;P

PS- Fullmetal Alchemist is the shit!

[–]caizer68 2 points3 points ago

Ed lost his Right Arm and Left Leg.

[–]gkiltz 1 point2 points ago

What if he comes back as a fat, bald truck driver from Pittsburgh??

[–]aghaiz 0 points1 point ago

Why is everyone nitpicking this bringing in religion, discussing the fma overview and how the elrics were "scientists"? It's a joke people, no one is suggesting the characters are religious.

I laughed.
