So...this isn't Seth Rogen, it isn't Mitt Romney's slogan, and it's not particularly funny if it's not true. Can someone explain to me why we're upvoting this BS?

[–]serioush 31 points32 points ago

This wasn't even a post on reddit, It's just an optical illuuuuussioooon

[–]RNRSaturday 13 points14 points ago

And Romney's not even running for president.

[–]WouldYouKindly69 7 points8 points ago

Hipster printscreen

[–]GrizzlyManOnWire 38 points39 points ago

[–]divor 6 points7 points ago

To be fair, here is not much difference between 'keep America American' and 'keep America America'.

[–]fatbunyip 0 points1 point ago

'keep Amercia Amercia'.

FTFY

[–]GrizzlyManOnWire 0 points1 point ago

I'd say there's a pretty big difference. "American" refers to the quality of being from America (American made, American born) and using it in the quote implies you don't wont Non-American (incorrectly referring to non-white, non-national born, non-protestant etc.) in the country. Romney said to keep America, America which implies he wants to keep the country the way it is. You can interpret that as he he wants to keep minorities down but it takes a bigger leap to do so and is clearly not what he meant in context

[–]Elrode 5 points6 points ago

I googled! It is the same phrase, Romney used it in a speech. Later recanted to "Keep America America." It is misspeaking like any other thing, unintentional, or someone didn't research the phrases of the speech. Either way, its funny.

[–]punnyverypunny 2 points3 points ago

As the article suggests he was misquoted which was then picked up and turned in the big hoopla it is now. In the video you can clearly hear him say "keep America America." Also its not even his campaign slogan. Romney's is actually "Believe in America" so most of these articles are false three sentences in claiming its his slogan and hes for the KKK and what not.

[–]Elrode 0 points1 point ago

Either way, you probably shouldn't be using statements that are so close to the original. I think the being for the KKK is more of the "Well Romney and company are birthers, so lets question if he is a clansman" mentality.

[–]punnyverypunny 0 points1 point ago

I can definitely see your point but the other side of this is it was 90 years ago and the fact that Romney is a Mormon and a "yankee" probably wouldnt sit too well with the KKK, at least of the 1920's when this would be relevant, anyway. He obviously doesn't mean it like people portray him to. The best point to make if anything is that he is a business man, a successful one at that, and I doubt someone as smart as himself or any chosen candidate would be dumb enough to back that particular organization.

[–]myfeetstinkmobile -2 points-1 points ago

This guy has the truth, even though the hivemind won't like it.

Tl,dr. False

[–]Jennica 5 points6 points ago

When will people realize that it's a real celebrity on twitter when they have a blue checkmark meaning their account is verified? sheesh

[–]metaphysicalfarms 17 points18 points ago

  • True: the KKK had a slogan, "Keep America American"
  • False: Mitt Romney uses this exact slogan
  • True: Mitt Romney uses the slogan, "Keep America America"

I don't see the difference as the sentiment is exactly the same. That being said people will nit-pick and claim the whole thing is false.

[–]MrMonkfred 7 points8 points ago

Now I don't mean to side with the KKK, but their one does make more sense...

[–]revolverzanbolt 4 points5 points ago

He only used the phrase in a single speech, as far as I'm aware, and there is a bit of a difference between the two phrases. One of them is a statement of desire for racial purity and the other is a statement against change. I'm no fan of Mitt Romney, but I don't think it's right to misquote him and takes his words out of context (the context was a statement against policies which would emulate the legislature of European countries, not anything about race).

[–]Voight_ 0 points1 point ago

I don't think so, unless I missed the whole Romney hates immigrants.

The Romney slogan means 'Keep America Capitalist, Christian and full of the American dream ideals'.

The KKK slogan means 'Keep America for the White people'.

[–]wuffo 0 points1 point ago

Well, no. The sentiment is completely different. While American is meant as a kind of people (presumably meaning white, KKK and all). 'America' is an idea.

[–]85IQ 1 point2 points ago

It should be: "Keep America America, America."

[–]mrdrsmashington123 7 points8 points ago

So how true is this?

[–]jkd42 17 points18 points ago

Its not. Well, it was a Klan slogan but its not Romney's campaign slogan.

[–]punnyverypunny 2 points3 points ago

If you actually listen to the "video evidence" they provide in your article you can clearly hear him say "keep America America" not American about 13 seconds in.

[–]daroofa 2 points3 points ago

That would depend on how many times it gets repeated.

[–]rory_guy 5 points6 points ago

The awkward moment when OP is a moron

[–]VoidWalkah 2 points3 points ago

"Akward moment when you screenshot something that was only posted 1 minute ago, making you look like a total karma whore stalking his page 24/7 and waiting for this guy to post something funny so you can immediately get karma of it."

[–]markman71122 3 points4 points ago

This isn't even true.

[–]punnyverypunny -1 points0 points ago

If you actually listen to the "video evidence" they provide in your article you can clearly hear him say "keep America America" not American about 13 seconds in.

[–]siberianunderlord 3 points4 points ago

Fucking. Parody. Accounts.

[–]CaptnMerica 0 points1 point ago

Confirmation?

[–]publius4 2 points3 points ago

Pretty sure Romney's slogan is "Believe in America".

[–]punnyverypunny 0 points1 point ago

It is... unfortunately a lot of people are "sheep" and just jump on the band wagon and never actually do research. And the ones that do "research" find the first pro-whatever their argument is article and quote it. All the while failing to notice they usually have no sources and are completely biased towards one side or the other. I also want to point out this goes for both sides its just a sad fact.

[–]stb14808 -1 points0 points ago

It's amazing what can happen to a word once more people begin to use it.

Awkward. AWkward. Awksss. AwkardDDDD

That's not the word you're looking for.

[–]JoseJimeniz 0 points1 point ago

If Strom Thurmon was elected president back then, we wouldn't have so many problems today.

[–]sailingonward 0 points1 point ago

Why yes, I was around in 1922.

[–]guitarjt 0 points1 point ago

I really wanted this to be true. but..http://www.snopes.com/politics/romney/slogan.asp

[–]Pmt3ddy 0 points1 point ago

Are we really instagramming screenshots these days? Really?

[–]thorhal 0 points1 point ago

Back here in germany whenever the neo-nazi folks march up, they often shout: "Deutschland den Deutschen" (Germany to the Germans), this kinda seemed similar to me.

[–]punnyverypunny 0 points1 point ago

The KKK's Keep America American is but Romney's Keep America America is really more about capitalism than anything else. Fun fact many of the KKK are also affiliated with the neo-nazi movement so it makes since they use the same or similar slogans/chants.

[–]thesorrow312 0 points1 point ago

People need to read Chris Hedges' excellent book "American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on the USA."

That along with his other book "Death of the liberal class" contain amazing insights into the current political / social climate in the USA today. Invaluable information.

[–]zbignevshabooty 1 point2 points ago

THANK GOD I'm a giraffe.

[–]dpusae -3 points-2 points ago

The real question is how stupid is the Romney campaign for 1) not googling that shit in the first place and 2) continuing to use it in ads!?!

[–]funkymoose 0 points1 point ago

It's fake

[–]punnyverypunny 0 points1 point ago

The real question is why are the people not seeing that's not what he said and news organizations quoting him have since retracted theirs articles that claim he did.

[–]backpackbanjo -3 points-2 points ago

obvious repost.

[–]Godeye 0 points1 point ago

[–]szchm 2 points3 points ago

It's a repost of a submission from 11 hours ago, but he put an instagram filter over it. I don't think OP really understands reddit.

[–]Sabmac 0 points1 point ago

He understands it well enough for his crappy, untrue, unfunny repost to have demolished any of my original content posts (as crap as they were) in popularity.

[–]szchm 0 points1 point ago

Yes, but have any of your posts inspired this much ire?

[–]NE112TALK -3 points-2 points ago

KAA

[–]KShults -5 points-4 points ago

[–]melesion -3 points-2 points ago

"Seth Rogen? You mean that Jew Canadian who walks weird? Fuck this guy." - Mitt "KKK" Romney

[–]Niall87 0 points1 point ago

Would the kkk allow Mitt Romeny to join? I thought they had standards ;)
