Adjust your monitor settings. The areas where the eyes, eyebrows, nostrils, and mouth are should all be darker than the background of the image.

Yeah, the first thing I though when I saw this is, "the higher contrast just makes it look like face on the left is wearing makeup." It's pretty obvious that we're conditioned to react to makeup-wearing faces as more feminine than non-makeup wearing faces.

Reminds me of the stranger in the mirror illusion. It's simple, just stare at your face in the mirror in a dimly lit room for about a minute.

EDIT: To me this effect explains the mechanism behind the Psychomanteum which was sometimes described as a small mirrored room with a single candle which was used to speak to the dead.

I think wires sort of get crossed. Our brain mixes the faces, so we see characteristics of one face superimposed on the other. While either face could be attractive separately, they look almost nonhuman when they're mixed.

As to why that happens... not a clue.

It's taking advantage of your brain's solution to the blind spot on your retina. There's a part of your retina that can't take in light because the optic nerve is attached there. To compensate, your brain takes images from your periphery vision and uses the information at hand to fill in the data as best it can. The result is an uninterrupted, though not entirely accurate field of view.

That is not a simple change in contrast. They reduced quite a bit of the contrast in the eyelids and lips.

Here's what the picture on the left actually looks like with the contrast increased--still like a woman.

It's not that complicated, really.

It's not absolute (of course), but more defined features are usually masculine. Our brain assumes that because it's so often the case (and has been for thousands upon thousands of years, which is why it's a latent, biological assumption).

Disney utilized this with Mulan. She looked very feminine and also very masculine simply because of one added feature: cheekbones.

Hmm reminds me of that fox domestication experiment. Foxes that were bred to be more docile also changed other in other ways: curly tails, patched coats and softer facial features. Are women evolved to appear more domesticated than men?

Could very well be. I've noticed that the more inherent / unintentional a reaction or behavior is among a populace, the more likely it is to be biological. Men have notoriously considered themselves the "masters of the Earth," and only recently have begun to recognize women as equally comparable to men (finally).

I wouldn't be surprised if softer features tap into a visceral notion that men are more fit, further assuming that women are less so. It's unfortunate, socially speaking, but could suggest that beauty often correlates with inferred domestication.

I'm glad we've evolved past mere biological adaptability.

If you'll notice it's lighter in tone, but it is the one on the right that has more contrast.

If you look at the shadows around the eyes and nose, they're much more easily seen on the right hand photo because they're darker in contrast to the rest of the face.

I think their phrasing is just shitty. They added extra shadow and adjusted the brightness, it looks like its not an actual contrast thing unless they mean the contrast between the two images.

That's because they kept the actual eyes and mouth about the same shade and darkened the skin. Doesn't change the fact that the shadows have more depth, creating a more masculine look.

Honestly it seems the trouble here is with their phrasing, not which picture has more contrast and why, because you are correct in that her eyes and lips are in high contrast to the rest of her skin.

This isn't an illusion. The picture on the right is darker, amplifying the various shadows of the face, this gives the face a more three-dimensional, or pronounced, look which is synonymous with males. It also makes the jawbone look less rounded and more rectangular starting from the cheekbones going down.

It's a pretty big change though, the shading makes the eyes look more deep set, the nose more ridged, and the lips less rosy. Still pretty interesting.

Edit: What would have been more interesting is having a picture of the exact same face except within different contexts which give people the illusion of it being a man or woman. Shading it differently isnt that impressive of a feat. You could touch up a piece of shit and make it look like pudding with some subtle changes if you wanted to.
